Qrow stood awkwardly in the doorway. If they didn’t move soon, they were bound to be in the way of their fellow students, maybe even get knocked over by a rushing older year if they didn’t move soon.
Their parents had said there was a library, but the descriptions really didn’t do it any justice, and the young Slytherin certainly hadn’t expected it to be quite this expansive. Of course, being raised in a wealthy pure-blood family, the first year had a library back in their own home, however it was nothing compared to this.
Qrow wasn’t even fully in the room, but from where they were standing on a long stretch of carpet they could see a border of seemingly endless bookshelves. Housed on these shelves were thousands of books, all standing at the ready or whizzing through the air as they made their way from the shelves into students' outstretched, waiting hands. Each shelf nearly reached to the ceiling of the room, though there were no ladders in sight with which to reach the books on the highest shelves.
There were small corridors dotted around the place here and there between the shelves, often home to students darting about as they try to find the perfect book. Behind these shelves was a small sitting area, complete with a dozen armchairs and a strong feel of hominess. On the other side of the corridor along the center of the library was a neat row of small tables, each equipped with several rolls of parchment and a cup of quills.
Next to these tables was a small fence, with only one break in it to serve as an entrance. A small silver plaque near this break read the words "Restricted Section" in a uniform, bland script, warning whoever was reading, was unpermitted to enter this area without permission. The bookshelves here were considerably shorter than their counterparts on the opposite end of the room, and many sported small chains or glass barriers to separate the books from the rest of the library- whether to protect the books or the students, Qrow had no idea. It definitely got their attention.
What types of books were in there?
The library was lit by softly glowing lamps mounted on the walls of the room and at the center of the far end, there was a large stone fireplace, situated near the sitting area. A spot that the young Slytherin had heard, was usually left vacant. Its hearth was lit and filled with merry, crackling flames near the ends of the days and likely during the colder months too. It was this spot that Qrow decided was the perfect place to curl up on an armchair with one of the many Defence Against The Dark Arts books that they had brought along with them from home.
That didn’t mean that they were actually reading the book, oh no. It was one that the child had read many times - to the point they basically had it memorized - and so whilst it may, to those rushing about the library, look as if the first year was reading, they were in fact, people watching.
Growing up an only child and being homeschooled for the better part of their life, Qrow didn’t have many social skills, or at least not social skills that could be used to interact with other children. They had mostly spent their time reading, or talking to their parents and on occasions, when their mother was sick and one of their fathers took them to their work at the ministry, their colleagues. As a result, Qrow was rather mature for their age, and much more used to socializing with rich and powerful witches and wizards in a respectful and professional manner. Not children - Unless they were the children of rich socialites...
Upon starting Hogwarts, they had promised their parents that they would at least try and be social, and apart from a couple of talkative first years of whom they had spent their first journey on the train here with, Qrow was mostly unsuccessful.
To help fix this, Qrow’s, rather brilliant, idea was to observe the social interactions between their fellow students and try and figure out where they were going wrong.
So far, they didn’t like it - if they were to make friends they would essentially have to be a whole different person! Other students weren't as blunt or sarcastic as them, and even the other Slytherin students found it easy to blend in with their peers, despite being so well known for being a house full of ‘dark witches and wizards’
Perhaps the young Slytherin would just have to get used to not having friends…

Elena didn’t know if she had missed something or perhaps it was just a coincidence but to her, it seemed the volume of the students currently in the library had increased tenfold. Her wary gaze zipped around the interior as if mentally counting just how many heads popped.
The Gryffindor refused to believe that everyone had suddenly had a burst of knowledge and had come darting down to book paradise to indulge in their interests but then again, she had been wrong before so who knew?
The library for Elena was her paradise, her place of comfort due to it’s excessive silence and the general calm atmosphere it brought although the buzz of chatter from nearby interactions that were going on seemed to only intensify in volume.
“Well, there goes that plan.” Elena muttered to herself glancing down at the rather thick History of Magic textbook she was heaving around.
It had been a pain to find in the first place, having been checked out on six separate occasions and she had been hunting it down ever since and when the opportunity had arisen, she hadn’t wasted a second in getting her hands on it.
She took in the lay of the land making a face as everywhere she turned, there seemed to be a head there, a head here. Really, surely, there was a bit more of a crowd here than what Elena was used to.
She practically lived and breathed this place so she had a good feeling of when things just seemed to be a tad bit out of the ordinary.
“Right, first off, you’re coming with me and that’s that.”
Her hand shot out to grab a chair from a nearby table dragging it behind it producing a screeching sound as the legs dragged along probably earning her a few ill-tempered looks in the process but she dismissed them.
She was in a pursuit of a greater goal, a comfortable nest to dive into her world and being surrounded by strangers was not a great way to about that.
That was when the golden chance presented itself, the flames flickering to provide heat to anyone who graced it’s presence.
The only other inhabitant being a rather young student from the looks of, Elena could work with that as compared to having sit among a gaggle of eager faces.
She winced as the screeching stopped followed by a thud as she whisked it into place a few feet away from the other putting on her most convincing and hopefully, friendliest smile.
“You don’t mind, do you?”
Hopefully not. She didn’t know how much more dragging around she could partake in.

Qrow had heard the sound of a chair being dragged across the floor before they actually saw it, and they couldn’t help but cringe a little as the sound just got closer.

When the girl who had been dragging it appeared and asked,
"You don’t mind, do you?" The Slytherin was in half the mind to tell her to fuck off, but there was something about her that was familiar, and it had successfully killed any and all retorts that had sat on the tip of their tongue. They cast their book aside and sat up from their slouched position in order to get a better look at the newcomer.
She was a brunette with shy, shy eyes, but the most noticeable aspect of her was the brass ring on her index finger, which had a black coiled king cobra poised to strike with the letter J inscribed in the centre.
It was recognisable as a pureblood family crest, and Qrow had definitely seen it before, but what was really curious was the fact that this student was a lion and not a snake.
It wouldn’t be entirely surprising if they had met the girl before. The Beithir family often hosted and attended social events with other high-class ‘pure’ families, and whilst they didn’t agree with the beliefs of said families, they mostly did it to remain integrated and informed about the happenings as well as to stay protected. As a result, Qrow's parents made it a habit to never argue against the beliefs; however, they also never openly supported them.
Most just assumed they didn’t do this in order to fly under the ministry's radar.
Toxic green eyes narrowed in curiosity as they looked at the student, looking her up and down, trying to rack their brain for any familiarities or similarities.
Finally, they spoke up.
"Do I know you?"

What followed was not a confirmation nor denial of her request, far from it actually as her question roused the other from whatever literature they were indulging themselves in posing a question that was defintely beginning to ring some alarm bells in Elena's head.
"Perhaps, I try to keep a low profile though if it can't be helped away from all the noise and drama that comes with this place."
She said, her expression registering curiosity more than anything else. Now, that was an interesting response, why would anyone ask her which made Elena think if there was anything similar that she perhaps should have caught onto about this particular individual.
She took a moment to gauge the features, the details, nothing immeditaly sprang to mind and with all of the time Elena had spent at Hogwarts, five years was enough to commit a name to a face and this was a face that was foreign to her.
"Elena Jangleton." The brunette offered in introduction to the other to see if that would satisify whatever curiosity the other had about whether the Gryffindor was a familiar face that they had chanced upon.
It certainly could be possible as she settled onto her armchair having secured her spot in this paradise of books, her hair just grazing the tips of her shoulders as she leaned the bag that she was heaving against the side of the chair legs.
"Well, you most certainly know me now, I daresay and you are..?" She let the sentence trail off in an attempt to squeeze out a name from the other, it was not someone from Elena's year, she was certain they would crossed paths by then so the fact that her face rang a tone of similarity with someone certainly begged a lot of questions.
Elena Jangleton had been surprised before, she just wanted to see what kind of surprise this was as silence wafted in between them waiting to see if the other would provide her with some insight as to whether Elena ought to recollect whom she was speaking to from some distant memory.

It was certainly something that the first year could agree with. While their own short time at Hogwarts thus far had been fairly quiet, the redhead had heard the other Slytherin students gossiping in the common rooms about the dramatic happenings within the school. Half of the time they wished they could get into the kind of trouble that others did; at other times, they could hardly be bothered; besides, their hot temper wouldn’t be suited for interacting with a prefect, and they were too proud to simply allow themselves to be disciplined by a stranger.
"Elena Jangleton." The brunette offered in introduction before she settled into her armchair, her hair just grazing the tips of her shoulders as she leaned the bag that she had been heaving against the side of the chair legs. It looked rather heavy, and if the Slytherin had to guess, this student was definitely a few years older than them; there was no way somebody would need that much stuff unless they were a third-year at least. Alas, no, they had heard the name Jangleton before; the family was well known in wizarding politics, much like Qrow's own, and if they remembered correctly, the youngest child was 15?
"Well, you most certainly know me now, I daresay, and you are...."
The first year almost laughed at the older students' formality—she was definitely a wealthy pureblood—just barely managing to contain themselves before they answered.
"Qrow Beithir. Pronouns they/them" They supplied, lifting up one of their hands in greeting, before adding,
"I’m a first-year."

Qrow, Elena filed that away for reference but it wasn't that rung a bell off in her heads alerting her that perhaps, the stranger in front of her was not as much of a stranger that the Jangleton girl thought. It was the surname that gave her pause as she rested on that for a moment.
"Beithir, you say?" She said asking again for confirmation slowly. Now they were getting somewhere, they were progressing as some slight understanding perhaps dawned on Elena's face, there was a family name that she had heard before, whispered from the sly mouth of her father.
With how heavily rooted her own family was in the politics of the wizarding world, it served to stand that her own father would take note of all the other big names and here was something Elena sworn she had heard more than once.
"That might explain something..I presume you are referring to the Beithir household?" She said as if there was any others with that name, it was such a unique moniker that made it so identifiable and that peaked her interest.
Elena was aware she wasn't the only one strutting around the castle who boasted of reputation and security in the name of her familial heritage but there were very few of those who's path crossed with each other and usually when Elena had a hunch, she was left with more surprises than regrets.
"Now, I'm not one to make assumptions but if I'm guessing correctly, that surname has crossed my path more times than one and not just here at Hogwarts." No, Elena as a habit was one of those people that could pick out even the finest detail and like her father, was well-versed in their affilations even if she did disagree with him on the majority of the things.
As for the girl herself though, Elena couldn't claim to know her too particulary well, just an happenstance that perhaps their connections seemed to merge together in more ways than one.
"We might have stumbled across each other before, I'm sure at one of the hundreds of social gatherings so maybe let's call this, a re-introduction of sorts?" She said with a grin and amused chuckle.
These were the type of connections her father would have approved of, within their sphere of nobility and while by heart, Elena naturally was a rebel, resistant to all forms of control Leonardo Jangleton had imposed on her, this was something of her own whim, her own intention.
"So, that makes us like, techinically, buddies or something, right?" She supplied phrasing it more as a question than anything else really.
"Tell me about your folks then and I'll introdoce you to the wonders or really, messes that are the Jangletons."

"Beithir, you say?" She asked, and Qrow nodded in confirmation.
"That might explain something. I presume you are referring to the Beithir household?" She said.
The Slytherin had to stop themselves from scoffing—as if there were any others with that name, it was such a unique moniker that made it so identifiable. In fact, the Beithir family prided themselves on such a name, especially considering so many of them had been housed in the noble house of Slytherin. A Beithir was a large snake-like creature with a venomous sting that came from Scottish folklore, and it was rather ironic considering the newer generations of the family all seemed to possess eyes of toxic green that made them appear rather snake-like in dim lights.
"Now, I'm not one to make assumptions, but if I'm guessing correctly, that surname has crossed my path more times than one, and not just here at Hogwarts. We might have stumbled across each other before, I'm sure, at one of the hundreds of social gatherings, so maybe let's call this a re-introduction of sorts?" A grin graced her face, followed by a chuckle.
"So, that makes us like, technically, buddies or something, right?" She questioned and, again, the Slytherin nodded.
"Tell me about your folks then, and I'll introduce you to the wonders, or really, messes, that are the Jangletons."
The redhead snorted in amusement.
They had attended so many social events in their lifetime that small talk was essentially a second language to them—a rather dull one, but still, it was always a pleasant change of pace to hear the gossip of the other families. Qrow's own family had much less drama; however, it wasn’t uncommon to hear people try to assume otherwise considering the parents of the household were polyamorous.
Still, Daemon Beithir was a respected man despite this, and the family's standing was left unaffected due to all three adults being of pure blood.
Of course, while the family was without its drama—or at least drama that Qrow was willing to share with someone from another pure family—it was not without its chaos. The child had 28 cousins and grandmothers that were always at war with one another; they had grown up around so much chaos that at this point, they found comfort in it; the rumours were always fun to laugh at too, and the child was convinced that their dad Hephaestus had started them in his boredom at social events...
"Well, what I tell you completely depends on what you want to know. For instance, I have three parents: my father Daemon Beithir, my dad Hephaestus, and my mother Niamh, but that's common knowledge amongst anyone who knows my father. Then there's the history, which is quite the mess considering its three rather old pure-blood families, and of course there's the rumours surrounding my family—apparently my mother is a gold digger who wants to kill of her own partners to get their money—and whilst my family isn’t anywhere near as dramatic as those rumours would have it seem, we aren’t without our chaos. A man that works with magical creatures, a man that works in politics, and a woman that used to work as an unspeakable all under the same roof? Well, it’s never a dull moment, I’ll tell you that."

@Qrow Beithir
Truth be told, if you really asked Elena what she wanted to know, she was looking for similarities in wondering if all the upper classes of the wizarding society acted in the same manner that Robhurst Jangleton did. Sure, she could claim to be a member and enjoy the benefits that came from being born into a respectable househould but as any sane person would tell you, respect was earned, not given. This was a simple notion, one of many that her father had failed to grasp and that was not to mention his other questionable conduct that had earned them their status in England as a whole.
It was also perhaps the reason why she had developed such a rebellious streak as her ears tuned in to see what the Beithirs were all about. Her eyebrow went up about the gold-digger rummor, now there was gossip that wouldn't surprise her, her own father had been the subject of some of these but it never shook him.
"Jack of all trades, it seems like." She said nodding. Elena could appreciate that, regardless of who they were, it was clear they had achieved thier milestones by working for it, all three patriachs and she could respect that.
The more and more Qrow laid out the details, the more Elena saw herself in the other, the two being so similar from a famlial background, it was sort of amusing, the chances that she would happen upon a similar, like-minded person, it just happened to be sheer luck, that was all.
"While I can't claim to have any exciting, half-baked rumors surrounding us but we're not without our excitement too."
Like Qrow, Elena had commited her family to detail although she would have preferred to stay well out of that sphere of things, it was her family after and some things were meant to be and this was one of those things that were quite simple unavoidable.
"You've probably heard my father's name whirring around here and there, Robhurst Jangleton. We run a a jewlery buisness, precious gems and all that for high value clients. Most of the heirlooms that you see people showing off, more like than not, it was hand-made or crafted by us. My mum, Adrianna's a lawyer, she's the scary one, not afraid to bite."
That, she wasn't, being the political ringmaster of the family, the primary reason why their position was so well-secure having developed a healthy network of which the Beithirs were a forunate contribution as her father would have put it.
There was also the shady side of things, family secrets, things better not spoken of that came to her mind but Elena wisely chose to hold her tonuge.
There was also a thing as giving away too much, after all, she had just met Qrow, the Gryffindor couldn't just go blabbing out everything to the whole wide world, that would open up a world of trouble and backlash that none of them would be prepared for.
It would also be incredibly foolish, something Elena Jangleton was not.
"And that's us. So, I'd say you certainly know me now." The brunette added on with a laugh, perhaps a few decibels too loud for the library as evidenced by a few, accusing glares from a few others, something she opted to ignore.
She paused for a moment hesitating even before the offer crawled it's way out of her lips to hang in the air as a potential question. "A bit sudden, I know but we'd love to have you swing by the estate some time. You'd certainly be welcome."

"While I can't claim to have any exciting, half-baked rumours surrounding us, we're not without our excitement too."
While Qrow doubted that the girl was lying about the half-baked rumours, they did not believe that there were no rumours surrounding the Jangleton family. The redhead made a mental note to owl their father later and ask about the family—out of sheer curiosity if nothing else. They weren’t often the type to buy into such ideas, not without knowing the person they were about personally, but if anything, they were always fun to laugh about.
"You've probably heard my father's name whirring around here and there, Robhurst Jangleton. We run a jewellery business, precious gems and all that for high-value clients. Most of the heirlooms that you see people showing off, more likely than not, were hand-made or crafted by us. My mum, Adrianna, is a lawyer; she's the scary one, not afraid to bite."
The Slytherin wouldn't be surprised if some of their own jewellery had been made by the Jangletons, and they could certainly relate to having their mother be the scary one. Niamh Beithir was soft as clarts until you crossed her, and considering she had been an unspeakable, a damn good duelist, and excelled in Defence Against the Dark Arts... Well, you didn't want to be on her bad side.
"And that's us. So, I'd say you certainly know me now." The brunette added on with a laugh, perhaps a few decibels too loud for the library, as evidenced by a few accusing glares from a few others, something she clearly opted to ignore.
The redhead couldn't help it; they burst into a fit of giggles. The disagreeable looks they were getting from the other occupants of the library, as well as the obvious careless attitude of the Gryffindor in front of them, had them desperately attempting to smother their laughter. The best thing was that they couldn’t find it in themselves to care; if anything, it was rather nice to meet someone who didn’t care for the judgmental looks of strangers. There were quite a few similarities between Qrow Beithir and Elena Jangleton, and it was incredibly refreshing to meet another upper-class child that didn’t immediately start sprouting off the same opinions that their parents would—or worse, act like some suck up because their parents wanted a favour from Qrow's own.
Elena paused for a moment in hesitation.
"A bit sudden, I know, but we'd love to have you swing by the estate some time. You'd certainly be welcome."
Qrow smiled.
Was this how making friends worked? They had barely interacted with anyone outside of their own house, or anyone at all for that matter, since the opening feast in September. Before that, the most interaction they had was with other rich socialites, which is what Elena was technically, but that was beside the point.
"I'll certainly have to take you up on that offer. You'll have to come to my home one day too."

And just like that, they had gone from barely knowing each other's name to eagerly sharing all the fine details of the families they hailed from. It truly was a wonder, Elena marveled at how easily you could run across people and just as easily go to something from nothing. She thought she had defintely earned her spot now relaxing back in the chair she had lugged over, the textbook resting on her lap that weighed more like a pound of bricks than anything really.
Honestly, Elena didn't know where the offer had come from but it was nice, nice to meet someone of similar heritage and also perhaps to show her parents that she too was capable of forming these connections if she wanted but unlike the rest of her snob-nosed family, friends meant more to her than just money and influence.
Elena was rewarded with a smile and in return, she gave a grin pleased at the potential acceptance of the invitation. "You'll love it there. We're based out of an old castle estate in West Sussex, it's nowhere near as big as Hogwarts but it's home."
She decided she'd leave all the finer details for later, if they ever got to that point. The brunette was also aware they weren't the only familiy in the area that boasted a ridicolously large estate, she would not be surprised at all if the Beithir household rivaled even them.
That was the problem with her dad, he wanted to be bigger, better, the number one wizard and more often than not, that had wound all of them up in sticky situations but still, he had such a determined mindset that it was often scary at times.
"I'd be honored. If you ever need help around this place, you can let me know. I remember my first year and I didn't know anyone like at all but allow me to be that familiar face." She said silently offering that olive branch.
It was sort of a deja vu moment, as the Gryffindor recalled how even before her first year, her parents had been dead-set against her going to Hogwarts, it waa no secret they thought very little of the castle's quality of magical education.
However, Elena wasn't one to bend to every little jab they made and after what proved to be a very tough converstation, she'd wound up here and behold, here they were.
