A Burning Introduction
As a part of professorship, it was announced that all professors were to show their availability and open arms to their students at the beginning of the school year. Typically, new professors were quick to meet the students, but Galim was a bit slow. In the back of her mind, she was here to teach, not to interact. Though, that was not in the mission of what Hogwarts was about. Creating relationships was vital for student success and she needed to come to terms with that if she wanted to work here.
Setting up a flyer, Maya had scheduled a meet and greet with the students in the Small Hall. She would rather have a place that is less noisy and crowded so if she were to get to know students, she was able to hear them and truly get to know them. Sadly, most of the students that she will be meeting won't be able to take her class until the next year or two, but for them to be familiar with her was best--especially since she wasn't an easy person to get along with.
At the end of the Small Hall lay a fireplace that was burning. Fire was ever-growing as the wood inside does not disintegrate over time. Maya stood in front of the fireplace and looked at the students who came to meet her. There were a good few. She felt as though it was time to introduce herself and see where it takes her.
Feeling the warmth of the fire behind her, Maya pulled up her sleeves just slightly to show her wrists and lowered the hood of her red cloak that caressed the floor. She was ready.
"שלום ילדים. Welcome to those who have never been to Hogwarts before and to those who have, welcome to another year at Hogwarts. My name is Professor Galim and I teach Muggle Studies. Most to all of you will not see me as your professor until your third year, however, it is best that you know who I am in case of emergency and to hide when you're brave enough to go on late night adventures-- which I highly don't recommend."
Maya paused. This was a good start, though she wondered if students were able to understand her as her Israeli accent was thick. It was to the extreme where her "R" sounds were guttural and the "th" sound hardly exists making it a "t" sound instead. She felt that because of this, she needed to give some background to the children about who she was.
"A little bit about me: I was born in Israel, went to school here in Hogwarts in Hufflepuff house and when I graduated, I took it upon myself to join the army, or what Israel calls the Israeli Defense Force for two years. My position was combat, first line with no use of magic. When I left the army, I traveled around the world, delving into every muggle culture I could possibly imagine-- from South America to Asia and Africa to the Middle East."
As she spoke, she looked at each of the children that were before her and gave a small smile; one that was difficult to spot unless they were really focused on her lips. Maya clasped her hands together and rested them in front of her while she still stood in front of the fireplace.
This is your time to ask questions to me and to mingle with those you have not yet met," she added, ending the formality from there. She stood, ready to answer anything coming her way.

A Burning Introduction
Sonya was at the end of the small hall, exited to meet Professor Galim. She was a first year, so she wouldn't be able to take her class, but she was exited to take it in the future. She had grown up a lot around muggles. Her mother was a muggle, but she died right after she was born. Although she didn't have her mother, her father made an effort to keep her in contact with her mother's side of the family. Sonya spent lots of time with her uncles, aunt, and cousins, especially with her cousins, who lived in New York City. Even though she had knowledge of muggle culture, she was exited to take the class later on, as she felt like muggle culture was her connection with her mother.
Sonya listened as the professor spoke with a thick accent. Her voice sounded lovely and she could understand what she was saying, although she had to concentrate. She listened to Professor Galim's backstory, which was intriguing. She must be very brave to have fought in the army, and traveling the world must've been interesting, she must know lots about various muggle cultures.
When Professor Galim finished talking and invited people to talk, Sonya walked up and approached her. "Hello Professor Galim," Sonya started, "I'm Sonya Carlson. I'm only a first year, but I can't wait to take your class once I'm a first year," she said enthusiastically, but not too over the top, as she didn't want to seem overbearing.

It seemed that there was not a full house for others to come and meet her. Deep down, Maya was glad. After all, she was doing this out of direction from the Heads of House and Solomon Lear. She wanted this event to be over and for a moment, she thought that it would be quick. However, there was a small first year Hufflepuff who came up to her.
The girl was so small in comparison to the age that Maya teaches. When the girl introduced herself as Sonya Carlson, she listened to how much she could not wait to take the class. The girl, however, was wrong as to what year she would be studying Muggle Studies. Raising an eyebrow to the yellow and black robbed student, she curled her lips in a small smile.
"My dear, you won't be taking my class until you're a third year. You've got two more years before stepping foot into my classroom," she said.
Realizing that it was slightly rude of an answer, Maya decided to ask the girl a question back. Conversations were healthy at times and that is the point of this mini event of meeting them. "Muggle Studies is an elective, not a required course. What makes you so interested in wanting to take my class, Sonya?" she asked, curious.

A Burning Introduction
Muggles Studies was something that Miranda's Uncle always advised his neices and nephews to take. He said that even though wizards and witches were more powerful than them, their kind could learn from muggles. Of course her parents disagreed; they didn't like the lesser humans who couldn't use magic and felt like they were pest, but Miranda understood where her Uncle was coming from. Regardless of the fact that they were outnumbered by them, she knew that wizards would have died out if they didn't mate with muggles, so they were useful in some ways. But she still felt like wizards were more superior than them, and so did her Uncle.
But she wanted to know more about why muggles were so important, since her parents didn't care to dwell on that subject very often. She had heard that one of the professors, the one who taught Muggle Studies, was coincidently having a meet-and-greet in the Small Hall and even though she wouldn't be able to take the elective until her third-year, Miranda wanted to take this opportunity to rid her mind of the unanswered questions she always had.
She entered the hall, immediately noticing the professor and the students gathered. The woman wore a red garment over head, one that Miranda had forgotten what was called but didn't care to ask at the moment, mostly from feeling like it would be disrespectful. She just managed to here a little bit about the woman's backstory as she slipped into the small crowd of students and she raised her eyebrows impressively. She liked to hear about women who joined the armed forces, strong women who liked to take charge and fight for what they felt like they needed to fight for. Professor Galim was obviously a good fit for her occupation, having been exposed to many different cultures and people and Miranda wondered if she should actually consider taking the elective once she reached her third-year. Hopefully her parents would agree for her to take it.
A Hufflepuff girl who seemed more than a little confused spoke to the professor and the woman corrected her kindly, and then asked her a question about why she wanted to take it. Miranda decided to wait until the girl answered before asked her own question, even though she really wanted to interrupt her. She suddenly had a lot of questions she wanted to ask the Israeli woman and she felt like this tiny-brained Hufflepuff would just waste time. Miranda stood quietly with her arms folded, frowning and glaring apprehensively at the girl.

A Burning Introduction

Muggle Studies was a subject that interested Amadea since she came to Hogwarts. Unfortunately, she was not able to take the course quite yet, but she planned on taking it in the future. She had been intrigued about what would be taught in the class, learning about Muggles from a wizarding perspective. Amadea hoped that it would be very informative, but also an easy O for her. After all, she sometimes still felt like a Muggle herself.
That being said, Amadea was excited as she stepped into the Small Hall to meet the Professor of Muggle Studies. Amadea had seen the woman around school during her first year, of course, but had never interacted with her. This was a perfect opportunity for Amadea to get to know a new teacher, which was one of her goals for this year: meet new people, make new connections, and enjoy her second year!
Amadea listened as Professor Galim explained a little about herself. She came from the house of Hufflepuff, just like Amadea, and Amadea listened, enraptured by the woman's story. Amadea found it incredibly interesting and brave. She couldn't imagine fighting in a war, and didn't know if she had the bravery to do so. She admired anyone who did. And traveling the world as well! That sounded absolutely amazing. Amadea hadn't been outside of London, except to her new home in Camberley. She had traveled to the moors of Ireland with Cecily during the summer, but other than that, she was not very well traveled. Amadea hoped to go on more adventures to faraway places once she graduated. Maybe she could even incorporate her job into traveling.
It seemed as though Amadea wasn't the only person interested in meeting the teacher. Two other students were there as well, and Amadea approached the group, making sure that everyone had finished speaking before adding her own words. "Hello, everyone," she said with a smile. "I'm Amadea Campbell, second year Hufflepuff. Like Sonya, I am very excited to take your class next year. I am excited to learn about Muggles from the wizarding perspective. Also, your life story sounds so incredibly interesting!" That sounded creepy, Amadea thought to herself one the words were out of her mouth. Maybe she shouldn't have said that. She was only speaking the truth, though. Amadea found Professor Galim's story so intriguing and wonderful. Amadea hoped she could accomplish as much in her own life. All Amadea knew was that she wanted to learn more about this teacher and she couldn't wait for the class!

Sonya retraced her words, realizing she had accidentally said first year, rather than third. Sometimes when she got nervous she mixed up her words, especially around professors, at the worst times. Oh well, what happened happened. She hopped the professor didn't think she was too much of an idiot.Maya Galim wrote: 9 Oct 2018, 05:24 It seemed that there was not a full house for others to come and meet her. She listened to the question Professor Galim had asked her, thought for a quick moment, then responded. "Well, I grew up around muggles. My mother was a muggle, but she died after giving birth to me. But my father kept me in touch with her relatives. I visited my aunt and cousins in New York a lot, where I didn't know any wizards so when I was over there it was a relatively muggle lifestyle," she said, "So I know quite a bit but I still feel like I could always learn more, especially about different cultures." She realized she had rambled a bit so she stopped talking and waited for someone else to talk. As she glanced around she spotted an unfriendly Slytherin girl waiting behind her, glaring at her. She knew she had gotten a bit confused at first, and had talked a bit, but that was no reason to be rude.
She then noticed one of Hufflepuff's prefects, Amadea, approach. It was good to see a friendly face. Amadea introduced herself and Sonya smiled as she spoke, glad someone else was there.

A Burning Introduction
After speaking to one student, Maya had not realized how many more were coming up to her. It seemed that there was a soft spot for Muggle Studies among the student body, which was a good sign for the future. She had known quite too many professors who despise muggles and it made her sick that they shed that viewpoint to the next generation. But now, here she was listening to students talking about how much they cannot wait to learn about muggles in her class.
"Welcome all," she said, looking at each new face that had shown up. Now there were a few students and in a way, she felt a bit happy. Granted, Maya never wanted to do this in the first place, but it was great to see that there is a bright future ahead for the Wizarding World as it only takes one person to change the world.
Maya eyed the second year Hufflepuff. She seemed to have been the most talkative among them all. She was truly a second year, that's for sure, in which she felt comfortable speaking in front of others. In addition, she was also a Prefect for a her house, which also made way for her social interactions. "My dear," she said, interacting with Amadea, "you will not be learning muggles from the wizarding perspective. You will learn as though you are a muggle... From their perspective." A smile formed on her face, hoping to have intrigued the girl further for the next upcoming year.
She then listened to Sonya talk about New York. Deep down, Maya shivered at the sound of the name. She never liked New York. She found it to be extremely dirty and over the summer, smelly. There was nothing good about that place and even most New Yorkers believed it, too. The commute was terrible, the weather was crap and worst of all, people did not treat each other with respect. It was one muggle city that Maya would never step foot into again. Nodding, however, she listened to the girl rage on about her experience.
There was another girl, one who seemed to be away from the scene, her arms folded. It was a Slytherin and from the looks of how young she looked, a first year. Maya, not caring too much about the first years in general was wondering what was on her mind. She walked away from Sonya and went towards the Slytherin girl. Her arms, crossed as well.
"I can't read minds, but I'm sure you're having quite the battle," she started, looking at the girl. It was an easy assumption that a Slytherin who has yet to introduce themselves and are hiding in the back has a past of superiority. What Slytherin background wouldn't? Even Maya's family, whom were Slytherin's believed the same thing. Her intertwining with the muggle world was Maya being rebellious, but also, in the end, knowledgeable.

A Burning Introduction

Amadea knit her eyebrows together in a bit of confusion. She always assumed that the Muggle Studies course would be learning about Muggles from a wizarding perspective, just like any other class. Instead, Professor Galim explained that they would be learning about Muggles as if they were Muggles. Even though this wasn't exactly what Amadea had in mind, and she definitely still had a lot of questions about it, she was still excited nonetheless. She was interested to see what the class would entail.
Coming from a (mostly) Muggle family, Amadea was excited. She hoped that she would do well in the class, considering she had been raised as a Muggle for the majority of her life. If she didn't do well, it might be a bad sign, she figured.
"Could you tell me more about the class?" Amadea asked. "Like, what are we learning for the year?" She wondered about the syllabus and what they were doing. Would they be doing hands-on activities of things Muggles did every day? Amadea remembered how misplaced she felt when she first joined the wizarding community after receiving her Hogwarts letter. She wondered if the Purebloods would feel the same way when they took the class. It certainly would be entertaining, she thought. Maybe it was karma; after all of the taunting from people who thought that Muggle borns weren't "true wizards" they would see what it was like to be a Muggle. Maybe it would open their eyes and change their perspective.
Amadea wondered if it would be structured like a Muggle culture course that her sister took in high school. While Amadea was certainly informed about her own culture, she really didn't know that much about everyone around the world. She hadn't been able to travel outside of London, Camberley, and Hogwarts (excepting to Ireland to visit Cecily). She hoped to travel more once she graduated from Hogwarts, but in the meantime, it would be wonderful if she could learn a lot more about people while she was at school.
Amadea wished she could take the class this year. She had a terrible workload already and she knew adding another class to it would only make things worse, but the appeal of the subject matter overshadowed any extra hours she would have to complete the work. "Is there any way we could take a class this year?" Amadea asked. "Or maybe you could create a club or something?" She hoped she wasn't being too annoying with all of her questions, but Amadea was very interested in the subject and she wanted to know everything.

A Burning Introduction
Her eyes flickered at the Slytherin, but when the second year Hufflepuff had questions that she could not hold to herself, Maya made her way back to the group. She hoped that the Slytherin girl would come talk to her after class or another time. Maya would love to break the superiority tradition one way or another. The best way was through her classroom discussions, which she is often open to.
Arriving next to Amadea, Maya placed her hand on top of her mouth and stared into the fire. What could she tell them about the class without revealing too much? Perhaps a simple summary of her classes as a whole would do justice. Her silence, perhaps intimidating, was interrupted by yet another question. The same girl wanted her to teach this year to second-years and even more-so, open a club. A smile, hidden behind her hand, had formed.
"Your first year with me will be detailed commonalities with differential elements between the wizarding world and muggle world-- but primarily from the perspective as a muggle. As we progress throughout the years, we will be delving into philosophical conflicts, gruesome pasts and even religious tensions that define the muggle world," she said, shifting her eyes from the fire to Amadea.
"Muggle studies is too advanced for second or first years, which is why it is only for third. As for a club, I'll be happy to be a faculty adviser, but it must be student-run," she added, wondering if Amadea would take on such a difficult task of opening a Muggle-Wizard Relations club on campus. Even as a professor, Maya often got a lot of disrespect from other professors. For this girl to want to open a club, she wondered if she can handle not only the positive outcomes, but the defiling negative ones, too.
Maya looked around to the other girls who wanted to know more about the subject as well as to meet her. In a way, she was glad they were around, but realistically, Maya wanted to be done with this meeting. "Any other questions?" she asked, hoping all would be good and done.
