Arrangements had already been made, a house had been purchased, and proper authorities were notified. This would be Farron's last week teaching at Hogwarts, and after she would be spending it quietly sobbing in her classroom during spring break packing up all her things and preparing it for the next Professor. But there was one person that Farron hadn't told yet, her best friend at Hogwarts: Finley. Well, not even just Hogwarts but just in her life. The two had grown so close that they were practically growing intertwined with each other. It made this decision even harder, but it wasn't one that came lightly.

So, Farron sent an owl to her dear Fin. It was short and simple. 'I want to make sure our outfits for the ball go well together before Spring Break happens. Would you mind joining me in the tower for our regular Sunday evening but in your outfit? I hope the stars guide you well to me, Farron.' Even just writing the letter, knowing what she planned, had tears dropping from her eyes, one splattering on to the page and warping the paper just a bit. The professor just hoped that Finley wouldn't notice.

When Sunday came, the office hours had been cancelled due to... grading reasons, but really it was to give Farron the space she needed. The tower had become a candle wonderland, thank goodness for magic, there were candles on just about every surface that she could place them. The middle circle was left bare except for a table with two chairs, its own candle, and two plates. This might be a romantic scene if the two were together. There was food under a cloche on Farron's desk waiting to be served. On the observation deck there was a fort of blankets and pillows waiting for them to arrive for their regular stargazing.

Farron was dressed in the ballgown she had planned on wearing to the ball, one that was akin to Rapunzel from the muggle movie Tangled. She had used the hair-growing spell to lengthen her hair to the point where she could recreate the braid from the end of the movie. It was a painful process attempting to do it herself as Fin agreed to help her with it beforehand, but there would be no time for cutely getting ready this time. Flowers were strewn through her hair, carefully placed.

She anxiously waited for Finley to arrive at the door. If she couldn't be at the ball, she would make sure that Fin still got the time that she deserved. She also hoped that this would soften the blow that she would be leaving once Spring Break was over. She had waited far too long to let Fin know about this, but she went over this scenario over a hundred times and held onto hope that Fin wouldn't abandon her forever after this. Farron wouldn't be able to bear Fin not being in her life, but she wouldn't be able to blame her either.

When Fin opened the door, Farron would be standing in front of it with a pensive smile. "Surprise?"

Finley didn't get a lot of mail of any sort. Or even notes, for that matter. The majority of what she received was reports of problems around the castle that needed repairing or undoing, and the rest... Actually, that was the only thing she received. So when she received an owl from none other than Farron, slightly warped in a few placed from what must have been the rain, it was a welcome break from the monotony.

It was a strange request, but Fin wasn't privy to the fact that there was an ulterior motive to the meeting of the two in costume. Finley couldn't remember who came up with the idea, but she thought going to the ball as Rapunzel and Flynn Rider was a brilliant idea. She laced up her corset (begrudgingly using her wand to help her do it alone), pulled on the tall leather boots, gave her hair a tussle, and set out.

Up, up, up the stairs to the astronomy tower Finley climbed. It was oddly empty on the way there, she usually passed at least one student coming back from asking the astronomy professor a question or handing in a late assignment. Hmm.

With a soft knock, Finley opened the door to the astronomy classroom. And her jaw fell agape.

Soft candlelight illuminated the room, reflecting off of the metallic orrery and bathing the room in a golden glow. "Surprise?" Finley's eyes landed on Farron, whose hair was charmed, braided and adorned with flowers, wearing an ornate lilac ballgown. She stood speechless for a moment before regaining her composure, offering a confused smile.

"I haven't forgotten my own birthday or something, have I?" She let out a nervous laugh as she stepped further into the room, now seeing the table set for two in the center, confusion and questions dancing across her face as much as awe and amazement.

Farron's hesitant smile couldn't help but grow into something genuine as she gazed upon Fin in her doorway. This truly was a genius coordination, one that was sure to stun at the ball- well. This little moment would have to do. She approached Fin with sweeping steps, her gown trailing behind her. If allowed, Farron would take Fin's hands in hers. Looking up into soft brown eyes, her own green eyes were already brimming with fresh tears that had flowed on and off throughout the day.

"Nothing you've forgotten, no. Though I must admit, as you can tell, I have brought you here under false pretenses." Farron took a deep breath, attempted to blink back the tears but one fell free streaking down her cheek. "I was going to wait until the end of the night to tell you but something about that felt wrong. Dragging you through a night of pretend happiness, though my happiness spending time with you is never pretend."

One of her hands came up to wipe her eyes, quickly returning to Fin's after a quick pat dry on her dress. "I have prepared us some dinner and our usual stargazing spot with some desserts. Obviously the candles- and... everything. In an attempt to create our own little ball. Because- um." Her voice cracked, pitching up at the end of the sentence as she didn't want to reveal it. "This will be my last week here." At this the dam broke and the tears flowed freely without Farron making an attempt to stop them. "My father has fallen quite ill, and he didn't want to even tell me, knew I would flee here to be by his side because how could I not? He's the only family I have left." Her voice came out closer to a ramble than anything. "I've known for a couple weeks now- I just, didn't know how to tell you. But I knew it wouldn't be fair to just disappear. I don't want to disappear, I don't want you to disappear from my life."

Her green eyes broke from the eye contact, instead attempting to focus on anything else. "I've never known someone like you, that is as good of a friend to me as you have been. I mean- from the first night at the tent I have felt there was a sureness to us being close. Which might seem crazy? But sometimes I do believe stars align to have people meet, and you know how I feel about astrology." Farron had always taken astrology with a grain of salt, instead relying on the fact of the heat of the stars and their movement. The way they came to be and slowly snuffed out over time. "I understand and respect if you do not want anything to do with me. But I won't be too far away? My father and I are moving to Hogsmeade, to be closer to magical medicine and all of that. I know that this is sudden- But Fin- I cannot lose you now that I have you here. You have become my best friend. If you want to never see me again- that's fine. But please spend at least this last evening with me?"

Her eyes finally returned to Fin's. An earnest and pleading desire painted within them. This was not a pretty scene, Farron practically sobbing and pleading for Fin to continue to be her friend despite not telling her until the last second that she was leaving. Was this a friendship that was only destined to last until one of them took their leave? That was the answer that Farron was seeking out, and she hoped that she would be right in knowing Fin wouldn't throw this away either.

Finley had a habit of falling into still silence whenever she was focused. Observing, noting details in an attempt to build a narrative that led to the truth. And when she saw a tear roll down Farron's cheek, she slipped into this analytical calm.

She accepted Farron's hands, rubbing her thumb across them to help ground her friend. Surely there was something Finley wasn't seeing, something she didn't know. Her face remained calm as Farron spoke, but a pang echoed through Fin's soul when she finally heard the news.

Farron was leaving.

The caretaker's eyes started to well up as she heard her friend speak about her father, the same father she had spoken of so fondly as far back as the first time the two spent time alone together. Finley knew that pain, of knowing your family was unwell, of needing to make decisions to uproot and change the course of your life to support those you love. It was a heavy weight, one Finley had needed to carry alone. She wasn't about to let her starry-eyed friend do the same.

She squeezed Farron's hands, a wavering smile attempting to offer some semblance of comfort. Instinctively, Finley wrapped Farron into a tight embrace. "You're never losing me, Farron." She closed her eyes, rubbing Farron's back as she let her friend cry. After a while, once breaths seemed to become stable once more, she pulled back.

"I understand, this is important. I'd be honoured to spend this evening with you." She smiled, and walked over to the small table, pulling out a chair for Farron. "For you, Princess," she teased, hoping to break a small hole in the dark clouds that seemed to be covering the two friends. Tonight was about enjoying one another's company, after all.
