Daniel... Daniel wouldn't have ever thought astronomy was interesting. Well, no, that wasn't it. As a younger child, before his year at Hogwarts started, his mother would sit outside with him and his equally annoying brothers, and point out the stars. The North Star. Mars, when they could see it, the Milky Way. He didn't pay attention much; the stars were just inanimate objects in the sky, used with myths and legends. Some of them were interesting, others? Not so much. Daniel didn't particularly care until he was here, on the roof in the chilly evenings, squinting at the lights thousands of light years away.

Then again, Daniel didn't think he was a teacher's pet, either. He only reached out when he bothered to find interest in the class; otherwise, he sailed without much issues. Astronomy was one of those classes; as was Charms. He found Charms quite interesting, more so than other classes, and pondered about that as he made his way up to the towers. It was mid-afternoon; he had finished his classes hand had time to meander. He'd go pester the Professor, first, with his boundless amount of questions, and then would probably do his homework so he had it finished. Nothing like finishing the work early so he could play earlier, in his opinion. Then again, he didn't understand those who waited until last minute to do their work. Didn't that just make them rushed, and didn't they struggle to understand what was happening?

He pondered this, last few steps from the door to the Professor's office. Daniel took a moment to breathe and relax his shoulders before he knocked on the door, and once permission was granted, stepped in. "Afternoon, Professor," he started as he stepped in. He stayed by the door, "I'm not sure if you know who I am - my name is Daniel. I have a couple of questions, if you have the time? If you don't, I can come back at another time when you aren't too busy," he added. He didn't want to be annoying, but he'd also understand if he had to come back later.

After all, he was just a first year. He was sure there'd be plenty of older, more interesting students to talk to. Daniel didn't care. He'd make it a habit to ask questions - if not now, then after class, prolonging all of the other first year Slytherins from getting to their comfortable beds.

Thurston looked up, when he heard a faint knock on the heavy door from outside of his office. His ears, or his senses were nearly perfect as he was- well not the normal professor you would encounter on the grounds of Hogwarts. He raised an eyebrow as he watched the door getting pushed open after the door handle was pressed down. While this was the time, when students may visit him in his office, most chose the easier way to owl him. The young professor’s eyes drifted towards the small pile of letters on top of his desk; right next to the numberless piles of pergament that he still needed to grade… someday. These students could wait a few days as he was only teaching them once a week anyways. He sighed and watched the door open with a slight frown, revealing one of the First Years, if he remembered right. Sometimes he wondered how some professors could remember the names of the students, while he was glad if he got the year right.

”I am not busy, sit down Daniel and ask away...” he allowed in a bored voice, motioning towards the chair in front of his desk. Before the young Slytherin had entered his office, he had taken his daily potion, the empty vial was stored inside the first drawer of his desk. Thurston’s eyes lingered on the young student, calculating what it was that the student wanted.

Daniel paused, momentarily perplexed. Either this professor enjoyed learning the names of his students, or Daniel stood out. It was one or the other, he figured, and he probably figured it was the former. Daniel didn't do much to purposely stand out. He liked doing his homework early enough that he didn't have to worry about it, but he also tried to put in enough effort to make it seem like he was trying. Most classes were boring. He would think about this as he made his way into the office and towards the aforementioned chair that Professor Barclay motioned towards.

He settled himself silently before shifting backwards, not necessarily to lean into the chair, but to be a little farther away. Daniel didn't get scared, but the way this professor set up his office made the younger Snake... apprehensive. He figured this would turn into a waste of his time, but he would still ask the questions. If anything, Professor Barclay could point him in the general right direction. Daniel didn't expect Barclay to hand things to him free on a silver platter. Daniel was smart enough to work for what he wanted.

"I was wondering if there were any places near Diagon Alley that you could buy one of those portable telescopes?" Daniel started. He paused here to rub his hand over the side of his jaw as he thought, trying to piece together what he wanted to say so he didn't sound dense, "I would like to buy one over the Christmas holidays, or ask my parents to send me one, so that I can continue my studies outside of class. Obviously not from the tower here, but there's plenty of other places to star gaze."

He was perfectly aware that his house was underneath the water, and that star gazing could be rare from his dorm room. He wasn't insisting that he was going to break rules, but he also never mentioned that he would be looking at the stars while at Hogwarts. He was vague that he knew the Professor would get his own opinions. Daniel was ready to clarify if that was necessary.

Thurston took a look at the student, before shrugging slightly. "There most likely is... but honestly I am not often in Diagon Alley as there are too many people for my taste..." he explained as he had to hold back a yawn. That student already began boring him. But it seemed he got the name correct and remembered that he was one of the first few students to bring his assignment to thw front desk. He would proabbly forget the name again as he was not one to take an interest in different names. If he got a name right it was mostly a coincidence but no one had to know that.

"Any other questions?" He asked, tapping the wood od his desk with his pointer finger in a steady rhythm. It was not audible for human words but surely alone seeing that gesture should be enough indication that he would rather be alone now. Or annoying Ackerley or Sergei, that never ceased to lighten his mood a bit. It was hard to imagine that the previous Transfiguration professor was more than twice as old as Thurston himself was. Maybe he should pay him a visit again if he had the time.

He focused on the young Slytherin waiting for his reply.

It was clear from the way the professor acted that he wasn’t too interested. Daniel struggled to not make a face. Okay, he did make a face. The middle of his eyebrows creased above the bridge of his nose and his eyes narrowed. Hogwarts. It was a shame for Daniel, in his mind at least. He liked astronomy, but if the teacher was like a wet noodle, well, who was to stop him from putting the most minimal effort into the class? He listened silently as the professor talked about Diagon Alley. Daniel, if anything, could relate to the similarities of not liking the crowded street. He wouldn’t say that though.

He didn’t get much of an answer, and Daniel gave a heavy, almost exasperated, sigh of annoyance. “No. I wanted to ask you about the hand held telescopes, but since you don’t know where to find them outside of Diagon Alley, I guess I’ll just write my parents.” He nodded at his own words and pushed himself out of the chair and onto his feet. With an almost exaggerated action, he dusted invisible dirt from his robes and gave the astronomy professor a small smile. “Thanks for your help, Professor. It was nice meeting you.”

He figured since he had no other questions and the professor didn’t seem all that friendly he’d just simply make a beeline towards the door.
