EmmaLee stared intently at the large upper windows of the Great Hall from her seat at the Hufflepuff table as she absentmindedly spooned scrambled eggs into her mouth. Every once in a while, a fellow Hufflepuff would nudge her and try to start a conversation or bring her into one, but she ignored them. She was watching for the morning post owls. Forget that they all rushed in at exactly the same time every morning, so they weren't likely to come even a minute earlier than they usually did. If the determined little puff stared hard enough, they would come faster, yes, hopefully with Stephen's reply and not her own letter back to her....again.
"EMMALEE!!" A brunette girl across from her yelled, leaning over the table and snapping her fingers right next to EmmaLee's nose, then waving that hand in front of her face, fully determined to get her attention. "EARTH TO E! COME IN!" She continued to call, until EmmaLee turned from the windows to the girl, an irritated pout on her pale face. She girl chuckled and sat down, finally the object of EmmaLee's attention. "Do you realize that you have been eating air and ignoring us for the past ten minutes?" The girl said, quieter with an amused grin and gesturing to EmmaLee's empty plate. EmmaLee blinked widely at the girl, looking from the girl to the platge and back, before chuckling a little and putting her spoon down.
"I'm sorry, Lila. Thank you." EmmaLee said sheepishly. "I'm waiting for an important letter."
"Well, you can't will it to come any sooner. So you might as well just be patient." The girl, Lila, said with another laugh as she turned to her other friends and continued whatever conversation they were having before trying to get EmmaLee's attention.
As if prompted by the irony, the post owls swooped in at the very moment. One eagle owl wavered out of the pack and tottered towards EmmaLee, looking rough and out of sorts with bent, messy feathers. It landed with a couple of unsteady hops onto her empty breakfast plate and dropped a similarly bedraggled little letter at its own feet.
EmmaLee's eyes welled up with frustrated tears as the owl shook itself a little, nipped up her weary bacon offering, and flew off back the way it came, presumably to rest and mend itself in the owlery. EmmaLee stared at her own glittery blue handwriting for a moment before snatching the letter up furiously and stomping out of the Great Hal, causing the chattering Hufflepuffs around her to jump in surprise and stare after her with confused faces, murmuring if they should follow her or not. Seemingly, they chose not.
Her sudden fury dissipated as quickly as it had come with the clanging thud of the Great Hall's massive door closing behind her. Tears of frustration welled up in her eyes again as she was at a loss for what to do. This was the fourth time she had tried to send this letter and it kept coming back to her. It was as if something was interfering with the delivery. She clutched the envelope delicately in her hand as she wiped away the tears and searched around the Small Hall for an answer on what to do now.
Eyes still glittering with tears, she settled on flinging herself on the hearth of the fireplace like a despondent Disney princess, letting the letter flutter to the floor, a little to close to the fire for comfort, but EmmaLee was too angry with it to pay attention.
~Unreliable flying rats.~ She thought, angrily, then took it back because it was quite clearly not their fault that something was attacking them between Hogwarts and Ilvermorny and they had to turn back. She was just had an ill temper when thinking about how upset Stephen probably was and what he must think of her not replying for this long.
She hated disappointing her friends and was always terrified that if she became unlikable in any way, they would all abandon her. She put her chin on her arm, pouting at the fire, and sighed, but it turned into more of a sobby hiccup instead. What if Stephen hated her now? What if he thought she must be just like that rude girl from before? Her thoughts spiraled downward until she was a hiccup-y, sobby, frustrated mess on the hearth and floor, not giving a care who saw her in this state.

Mellani had been watching a Hufflepuff while she was eating breakfast. She didn't have too many friends and she was a quiet girl so she didn't really talk to people while eating. She watched the Hufflepuff girl as an owl landed and the girl took a letter from it. The girl looked frustrated... Frustrated to the point of tears. Is she okay?, Mellani wondered.
Mellani wasn't a person who was very social. However, she did know when someone was sad and needed help. And her curiosity had gotten the best of her this time. She wanted to know what was in that letter that had made this girl so frustrated.
Mellani silently got up and headed to the small hall, following the other girl but making sure she wasn't seen. She peeked through the doors as the girl flung herself at the hearth. She saw the letter flutter to the ground as the girl started sobbing. What was she supposed to do now? She wasn't good with such stuff. However, she knew this girl needed help, and her kind nature wouldn't be able to bear seeing someone else crying like that.
Mellani walked up to the girl in silence, not wanting to startle her. She sat next to the girl and rubbed the girl's back gently, the way her brother used to do when she was sad. "Hey... Do you want to talk about what's going on?", she asked kindly. "It's alright if you don't...", she added, knowing that most people didn't want to talk about such stuff. She couldn't say it was all going to be alright. There was no guarantee of that. However, she could help the girl and at least try to make everything alright... Couldn't she?

EmmaLee jumped in surprise and gasped as someone came up behind her and touched her back. The tears still in her eyes dried up immediately and she swallowed one last hiccup-y sob as she wiped the remaining water off of her face and turned towards the pretty brunette girl rubbing her back sympathetically.
"I ah um..." She started, flustered that she had let herself fall apart in public. Finally, she sighed. "It is nothing, really." She said in a defeated tone. "I've just been trying to send this letter to my friend at Ilvermorny school and the owls keep coming back with it." She leaned over and picked up the letter off of the hearth. Rubbing the corners gently with her fingertips, she chuckled a little and wiped her eye again.
"I'm so silly for crying about it, aren't I?" She said with a weak smile. "I'm just afraid that he will think less of me and be so upset and hurt because I haven't replied in so long." She continued, putting the letter in her lap and smoothing it out over her knees as she looked up at the other girl. "I just hate the thought of disappointing my friends and the fact that I don't know what is making the owls come back. They look so beaten up when they return."
EmmaLee frowned down at the letter and turned it over a couple of times, trying to see if there was any discernable clue as to why the owls were being interrupted on their flight to Ilvermorny. The magical post owls seemed pretty adept at avoiding anything that might hurt them and there wasn't any trouble until the few weeks or so. Not finding anything, she sighed once more and looked up at the other girl again.
"Thank you for comforting me. My name is EmmaLee." She said with a weary smile, trying to pull back her chipper self.

Mellani looked away sheepishly as the other girl jumped in surprise. Maybe she should have just left the other girl alone or at least, only talked and not touched her back. Mellani couldn't help but think that she had done something wrong. That she was bad at this and shouldn't even have tried. What right did she have to know what happened anyways?
"Oh... That's really weird", Mellani said as the other girl spoke, saying that she was trying to send a letter that kept coming back. That seemed really weird. It was the first time Mellani was hearing of such a thing.
"Hey, it's okay to cry over small things that mean a lot to you. That's not called being silly, it's called being sensitive and having a heart. Anyone would get frustrated if something like that kept happening. Don't be hard on yourself only because you care. And as for the problem with the letter, maybe I could try sending it, and we'll see what happens. If it doesn't work out and the owl does come back, we could ask one of the professors or something.", Mellani replied to the girl. Mellani was desperate to help her somehow and it didn't matter how exactly. She was just going to try every possible method.
Mellani thought for a while before continuing. "The students from Ilvermorny will be coming here in a few days time too, so, if nothing works, you could explain the situation to him then, I'm sure he would understand." Mellani looked away, wondering if she should just shut up. Then, the girl thanked her. Mellani smiled, "Anytime", she replied.

EmmaLee wiped her cheeks one last time as she fully turned towards the other girl, tucked her legs underneath her, and smiled a more genuine, comforted smile. It was so nice of her to offer her own solutions to EmmaLee's problem, but it wasn't very likely that the girl's owl would be any more successful than the other owls EmmaLee had sent. She had tried four times with three different owls.
"Thank you for your offer to 'elp. I think I probably 'ave enough time to send it one more time before the other schools get here, but I don't think your sending it will make any difference than mine." She said with a defeated sigh, picking the letter up and rubbing the corners with her fingers. They were already well smoothed out from previous frettings about the letter.
"It is nice to talk to someone about the frustration though. Sadly, I'm the kind of person who is not very patient with getting answers and thing not going my way." She continued with a little chuckle at her own expense. "My friend is a good friend though and a good person, so I know that 'e will understand if 'e arrives and I explain my troubles in getting 'im this letter." EmmaLee to a deep breath and laid the envelope across her knees, delicately smoothing it out before looking up at the girl again.
"I really thank you very much for comforting me. Maybe it isn't silly, but I do think I let myself get carried away sometimes whenever things get too frustrating." She chuckled again. "Like the whole world is going to end because something didn't come easily." She thought for a moment, considering her options now that she wasn't so upset about it going wrong.
"You do 'ave a good solution though. I think I will try to send it one more time, and if comes back, I will just give it to 'im in person and explain." EmmaLee nodded a couple of times to herself, significantly more comforted now that she had a positive plan that didn't involve spending the rest of the day sobbing on this hearth. She smiled brighter at her confidant.
"Now that my pity party is over, as Alura would say, I didn't catch your name." She asked, waving a dismissive hand over her pale nose as she said 'pity party'. "May I ask of it?"
