The Enchanted Maze
Interacting with @Rhys Read, as Zendra Blanchet
Greek mythology used to be the one thing Zendra and her dad shared. He was a writer, after all, and loved writing short stories in his free time. When he did, Zendra would sit close by, watching from above his shoulder. He would type for hours, while Zendra watched on with amazement and while her mother scorned with resent. In her mind, writing anything that didn’t put food on the table was a waste of time, especially if it was ‘fantasy’. So when the divorce came, the old mythology books and ancient tales were packed away, and likely thrown in a dumpster if Zendra’s mother could not sell them for a good price.
And that was that. For years after, Zendra would never open another mythology book near her mother, or mention another hero. Until now. Achille, this strange and beautiful boy, knew all about what she could barely remember, but wished she did. Of course, the name Daedalus struck a cord of familiarity, but she couldn’t quite place it. What was his relation to mazes? Or a minotaur?
Noticing that Achille seemed a bit embarrassed, she reassured him, “Oh, I used to love greek mythology,” Zendra said, “I’m afraid I don’t remember much after my mother stamped it out of me.” Oh no, she thought, brows creasing, was that too direct? Zendra was about to stumble out an apology when Achille answered her previous question.
"And I'd be delighted to try to find the way with you," To Zendra’s surprise, he gave a slight bow, and stopped when his gaze connected with Zendra's. Then, he offered his hand. "Shall we?"
Smiling brightly, past fumbles forgotten, Zendra took his hand in her own. It was nice to have his warmth back, and she thought about how gracious he’d been. First the compliments, then the bow, and now offering his hand? Zendra couldn’t believe her luck. No one that she could recall had ever been this kind to her, and it was sending butterflies to her stomach. Butterflies that made her heart pound. Butterflies so bright, so fierce, that even her mother couldn’t stamp out.
“We shall.”

The Enchanted Maze

@Rose MoonCassie was looking forward to this year's spring ball. As per usual, she was attending with a member of the International Student Squad - in fact, Drew was the only other founding member who was at Hogwarts for this trip. Ro was presumably around here somewhere too, but Cassie didn't see her as she joined the stream of students heading to a certain area of the grounds. While she waited for Drew, she watched the other ball-goers, searching for anybody who'd had the same idea as her. She couldn't find anybody. Nobody else had seen "Spring Court" and immediately made the leap to "Jedi Knight", and for that Cassie was grateful. She and Drew would have unique costumes that still kind of fit with the theme. Court, knights, Jedi... it really wasn't that far of a jump if you thought about it.
When Drew arrived, Cassie ambushed him with a hug and a grin. "Look, I brought light sabres!" she told him excitedly, pulling out two chunky plastic tubes from the folds of her cloak. With a flick of her wrist, they extended into a passable imitation of light sabres - both blue ones, as befitted two knights of the Jedi order. Cassie handed one to Drew with pride. "Didn't know if you'd have one so I brought one for you too." She swished hers through the air. "They're like swords, but made of light and cut through pretty much anything. I mean, these ones are plastic, obviously, but the real ones are made of light." Or was it lasers? Cassie hadn't watched Star Wars in years. She was due for a marathon when she went home in the summer, especially since there were apparently some new shows out.
When both Jedi were sufficiently attired, Cassie attempted to lead the way through the maze. When the pair got through, she caught sight of a makeshift arena: a dirt rectangle with wooden fencing and seats for spectators. And broomsticks! "Ooh, a contest!" Cassie lit up. "I'm gonna do it. You wanna come cheer for me?"

Jack glanced down at his jester costume when Ye-jun said he liked his better and laughed. "Thank you! It was another of those last-minute things again," he explained, embarrassment tinging his voice. "I'm really glad you decided to come, though. And yeah, these events are more enjoyable in pairs! Especially when you never know what's going to go wrong with them," the Slytherin added a little wryly. "You're certainly right about them always being messes, no matter how nice they might start out." Secretly, however, he was pleased that fact hadn't managed to scare Ye-jun from attending them altogether. If he had been a foreign student in Ye-yun's shoes, he might not have wanted to come back to a school whose events kept going badly.
"'Wouldn't mind a second date?'" Jack repeated in amusement. "Very well, then! Your wish is my command, Your Majesty. In fact, I would be honored," he said, performing another bow while he continued to juggle the unlit torches behind his back before straightening up again, casting Ye-jun a playful wink.
When the Beauxbatons' student hesitated in responding to the question about his cousin, Jack worried he had crossed a line, but the other boy continued and the jester nodded solemnly upon hearing Eun-ji wasn't doing so well. "I'm sorry to hear that," he answered sincerely. He wished he could do something to make her feel better, but he imagined any interaction with him might have just made things worse for her. After all, Flash had been a mutual...friend?...so any interaction with him probably would have just reminded her of Flash. It was probably better just to leave her be; at least for now. "I hope she feels better soon."
Though they had just been discussing that they might be lucky enough for the event not to be as dramatic as last time, one of the most if not the most dramatic people Jack had ever had the punishment of knowing called out to him by his last name and a greeting. Hanako Tone. Jack stared in confusion and disbelief as the other Severus Snape Dorm member came over and gave him a quick pat on the shoulder while he was juggling. Since the torches weren't lit, he must not have felt any danger in approaching his fellow fourth year. It wasn't until Hanako explained himself and how he had evidently used Jack as an excuse to escape some undesirable situation that the redhead understood why Hanako had suddenly chosen to interact and associate with him out of the blue.
"Tone, what have you gotten yourself into this time?" he asked with an incredulous smirk as he shook his head, still juggling. But before he could get an answer out of Hanako, the Japanese boy was already greeting a new person - Ye-jun. Jack blinked before snorting and kicking Hanako lightly in the leg. The way Hanako had greeted him hadn't suggested he was up to any good and Jack already knew how much Ye-jun disliked being seen soley for his good looks.
"Tone, this is Ye-jun. Ye-jun, this is Hanako Tone - another dormmate of mine. He doesn't tend to associate with me unless it's of some benefit to him and evidently that's no different this time." He had a very strong urge to toss one of his torches at Hanako's head but ended up deciding against it. He wouldn't have wanted to risk destroying what few brain cells the teen had left regardless of how thick his skull was.
"And yes, actually, Tone, you were inturrupting something. Ye-jun and I were just about to head into the maze together," Jack explained, recognizing Ye-jun's response to Hanako's behavior and casting the former a quick look of apology. He caught the rest of his juggling sticks and put them away in his bag. He had been going to ask if Ye-jun could light them for him so he could try to show off a bit more, but Hanako's sudden appearance suggested to Jack that it was time to go. "Don't tell me you of all people don't have a date for the ball? What about Rainwood? Where's he?"
Shouldering his bag, he walked over to Ye-jun's side and whispered to his peer, "Sorry about him. He tends to grate on the nerves and has a hard time taking a hint. If he tries to follow us, we can see if we can lose him in the maze if you want." Perhaps it might have been something of a mean suggestion, but Jack's half-smile implied he didn't mean it in a mean way. "I'm sure he'd be able to take care of himself."

The Enchanted Maze
Making their way through the grounds of Hogwarts they would perhaps be a bit, just a tad, fashionably late.
Oh but you could hardly fault the pair; the golden light of the late afternoon had made it feel as if they had all the time in the world as they wandered. The way itself to the Spring Ball had been filled with laughter and talking as Dori, Elsian and their majestic companions of spider and feline paraded across the wildflowers and bunches of trees. Kitty had seemed all too happy to wander after Buttons, mostly leaving the pair of students to themselves save for the tiny glimpses you could see of the two when one deemed it important to look for the 2 furry menaces. It wouldn’t be until the sunset truly hit that the 2 had bothered to quicken their pace. It had Elsian laughing at the irony as he grabbed Dorions hand as they began to rush past a few fellow slow poke arrivals; they’d met up early and still managed to be fashionably late! It was a little funny. But not unexpected.
“What do you think?” He asked as they finally drew near. The entrance of the maze loomed ahead, with the distant hum of music. “Exciting isn’t it?” Elsian teased, walking closer to the entrance, “think we can find our way?”
The truth was it would be a bit harder than it looked. Certain areas would have already changed…but it was fine, they were still early enough.
Passing the opening and into the maze it was like a transformation. Surrounded by the shrubs of differing heights and the overflowing flowers peppering the different areas alongside the hedges and bushes, it felt like being hidden away in your own secret garden. It fit Dori perfectly. The way flowers seemed to practically lean towards them, the colors of their outfit handsome and perfect for the area, it was just so…them. “You match,” he grinned with a soft look, pointing to some flowers near a sweet smelling bush as they walked, but paused when he almost tripped on the path.
Letting go of Dorions hand he barely caught himself as he almost stepped on a tiny mushroom leaping past their feet before disappearing down a different path and deeper into the maze. With a smile towards the other he nodded towards the path, “wanna follow it?” he asked even as he turned down the new path, wandering backwards to grin and wiggle his fingers at Dorion in a silly ‘come hither’ gesture in a flurry of white fabric, as if trying to lure the other away in the most ridiculous way possible.
“Maybe it's a sign; this way,” he began, voice pitching up in an obnoxious high voice as he paused by a hedge, only his head and one arm gesturing the other closer peeking out from behind, “this way to the ball Dori, listen to the tiny mushroom guide.”

Dori had initially been against bringing Buttons, but Elsi convinced them to. Buttons had an adorable little bowtie, he had a suit as well but wouldn't cooperate and Dori gave up on the hopeless mission. With Kitty on his back or by his side, it depended on Kitty's mood they quickly scampered away into the rest of the ball without them. There was something about magical creatures that always made them come back, but still sometimes Dori worried about something going wrong and not being able to find Buttons later. Through the worry they squeezed Elsi's hand as they watched Buttons disappear into the maze.
Of course the two had ended up being late to Elsi's own prepared event (with other students, but Elsi was the only one that mattered to Dori). Whenever they were together it seemed like a bubble would encapsulate them, a magnetic force that sealed them into a place where time didn't matter and laughter was frequent. When Elsi finally popped their serene bubble to lead them on, a part of them couldn't help but be sad to join others. There was something that wanted to pull Elsi away. With everyone at the ball the castle could be theirs. Running, hiding, laughing, trying to see if the House Elves would gift them food (when the answer was always no). They spared a glance back to the castle as Elsi pulled them forward. The trepidation that remained of ball's past still tugging at Dori's fight or flight instincts. They had run away for so long from everything. From fire after the Hufflepuff explosion, from their family after their grandmother's death, from balls after every single one went poorly, from every responsibility that they were given for fear of failure.
At this point Dori was tired of running from things. Maybe the only option at this point was to run to something. Not to the ball, but towards Elsi instead. Towards the one that has always been there.
Dori caught up and leaned into his arm. They could hear their heart pounding in their ears as they approached, the vibrations of the anxiety spreading through their limbs. But when Dori looked towards Elsi as he spoke, they dimmed. A loud scream turning into a buzz of excitement instead. "Of course we can find our way, and if we can't- well technically it's your fault since you helped." They stuck their tongue out at him in jest before following him in.
The maze was gorgeous, in their mind they were taking several mental pictures so they could paint this later for him. When he looked at them with a softness that they hadn't seen in him, a blush spread once more across their face. This time sticking around for awhile longer than last. They picked out a flower from the hedge, one with a long stem before expertly tucking it behind Elsi's ear in a way so it wouldn't move. "And now we match." Dori loved matching. Of seeming like they obviously belonged together, a notice to others that they were best friends and each other's dates. A visible confirmation of belonging.
A cold spread through their hand as Elsi let go, and instinctually they grabbed their own hand holding them in front so they wouldn't begin to nervously fidget. This was a time when Dori did miss having long hair, something to always twirl or braid. "Ah well there is quite a handsome guide pulling me forward." As a tease they leaned down and gently pat the mushroom. "How could I say no to these guys?" They rolled their eyes at the ever mysterious Elsi, truly the greatest example of a goofy teenager that Dori could find. "Well, I suppose I must. Two of my greatest trusted compatriots seem to be heading this way. You, and the mushrooms."
Without waiting another second Dori did a small jog to catch up with Elsi, grabbing his hand to fill the emptiness that was creeping up their arm. "Come on, we're running late as is." Granted, that was both of their faults but Dori really wanted snacks. "I expect to be taken directly to the refreshment table upon entering my dear Prince."Action | Entering the Ball

His brown eyes stared at the entrance to the maze. The maze! "You have to be kidding me!" he cried out. He had enough trouble finding hit was around hogwarts. How was he expected to find his way around a maze.
He tried to look above the flowery hedge, to no success. He sighed despite not wanting to at all. He entered the walls of green, it would be the only way to the actual ball. Pretty much as soon as he entered he knew he wouldn't be able to get out on his own. Or if he never found anyone he could be wandering around for hours.
He had no clue were he was, honestly. He hadn't seen anyone, but he had heard one person. Who screamed about being stuck. He got some sense of joy knowing that he wasn't the only one. It was a subconscious decision for him so go to the voice. But he did.
It took a bit to find the voice, who he found out belonged to a girl. At least he thought it was her who called it. Now came the questions, was she with someone? Was she really the one who said it? Would it be weird if he walked up to her? He eventually decided based on the sole thought that she was the only one he had seen that it would be best if he talked to her. "Hey! Your the one who called out right?" walking up closer too her he continued. "My names André, and have no clue were I am" he joked.═══════*.·:·.☽✧ ✦ ✧☾.·:·.*═══════

The Enchanted Maze
Marietta continued to wander the maze. Th light slowly fading and the leaves... was it just her or did they seem to rustle more, whisper things... She shook off that strange feeling. As she walked she heard spells being shouted and began to pick up the pace. She would be looking over her shoulder almost the whole time as she went through the maze no longer soaking in its glory and beauty. It was because of this she didn't notice the knight in shining Armour until he asked if she was alright.
Marietta jumped a little turning toward the sound of the voice. Woah. that was the best way she could respond to the knight before her was just woah. Of course people were going to dress up like knights tonight she had even heard there was a competition of some sort for them. What Marietta hadn't expected was for them to wear actual armor. But here he was a knight in shining armor with an elegant green cape asking if she was alright. She took in his labored smile and they way he asked it noting she wasn't the only one whose had a rough time in the maze.
Immediately she made a futile attempt to dust herself off to be more presentable to the knight. Marietta may have not met a knight before but Nobody most certainly had at some point in her probably long life and she knew it was important to be presentable. Marietta then curtsied though it looked odd with out a dress.
"Thank you for your concern good sir knight! But I'm doing well thank you. I did hear some spells earlier but was actually moving away from them and I ran into you." She pulled out of the curtsy and gave him a smile as well as a sympathetic look to say its okay were all having a rough night. "May I ask if you are alright good sir knight? I'm sure you've journeyed far to get this deep into that maze it seems as if something is burdening you." she'd look him up and down again. trying her best not to stare as his simultaneously elegant and intimidating costume.
She really did want to help him if something was wrong but how could she help somebody like him? He was clearly some privileged kid who would swagger into the ball and have at least-Marietta shook her head don't judge people Marietta she'd think at herself angrily. Maybe it wasn't that hard to get your hands on real armor in the wizarding world and he was just wondering the maze with no friends like herself or something else, he could be anybody. So who was she to judge him?

A pretty prince. Like the one whose the heir of the kingdom but all they do is laze around and skip lessons. From top to bottom, he wore this royal-like get up in dark blue colours. Each little thing added to the outfit (the cape, the badge, the shoulder pads etc) made their use by hiding his usually skinny stature, giving him the illusion that he was more built than he actually was.
The main attention grabber definitely was his outfit, but there were other small details people who talked to him could notice. Like the subtle shade of red that dusted his eyelids, giving a sort of femininity to his outfit. As well as the one clip on earring he wore on his right ear, that was a light shade of gold, shaped like thin ropes that reached just above his shoulders.
His hair was kept in his usual manner of soft wavy jet black locks. If not, even slightly more curled than usual.
When Hanako’s flirting didn’t seem to amuse the other boy, instead of feeling dejected, he was momentarily curious. He attempted to hide his urge to let out a genuine chuckle behind the cover of his hand. And failing, but he did his best to pretend it didn’t happen. For a second there, the boy reminded him of Eun-Ji. She made a face just like that one whenever Hanako tried to jokingly flirt with her. He couldn’t help but be amused at the resemblance. Without him realising, perhaps he liked her reactions more than he thought. So much so that he was beginning to remember her just because this guy did the same thing she did. Once he felt he was in the clear from accidentally laughing, he went back to sending the boy a flirty smile. “ Charmed~”.
And then he got kicked by Burnett. Well, it wasn’t that painful, but to an unsuspecting victim, it was a surprise. “ Ow???” he seethed in a whisper before softening his expression. “ Oh, right. You asked me something." he shrugged with an impish grin. “ I’m hurt, that's the first thing you ask of me. I’ve been on my best behaviour today, I’ll have you know. “ he chuckled, his laughter dying down as he glanced warily between the two. “ Umm.. but I admit maybe I’ve been too good, if you know what I mean. So if you see a guy around my height. Blonde. Green eyes. Cute dimples. Then, my name is now… Sara.. Kohana. And I’m actually from Mahoutokoro. Can’t speak English. “ what a creative name, really. But what are the chances of there being a Mahoutokoro student with the same exact name at this very particular ball?
"Tone, this is Ye-jun. Ye-jun, this is Hanako Tone - another dormmate of mine. He doesn't tend to associate with me unless it's of some benefit to him and evidently that's no different this time."
“ I prefer Hana, actually. “ he added before throwing Burnett a playful grin. “ Well, that’s rude. How do you know I’m just using excuses to hide the fact that I actually enjoy your fun company, Burnett~”. That's a totally plausible reason. However, Burnett hasn’t really reached that level of hanako affection to receive such a thing. He was an entertaining person to talk to, yes. But they usually had no real reason to interact unless they wanted to gain from each other in some form or another. Or when one of them had a hot date, apparently. And it seemed like a comfortable relationship for both of them.
"And yes, actually, Tone, you were interrupting something. Ye-jun and I were just about to head into the maze together,"
“ Together? “ he glanced between Burnett and Ye-Jun. Throwing a surprised yet impressed smirk towards the red haired slytherin. Dammmn so you do have rizz, at least that’s what his face was saying. He was more impressed than dejected at the turn of events. It wouldn’t be his first time accidentally flirting with someone else's date. What he felt for Ye-Jun was surface-level at best. No matter how good-looking he is. The last thing Hanako wanted was something serious. He then send another glance towards Ye-Jun, with a familiar mischievous glint in his eyes. “ Not gonna lie, I’m damn glad I did” Hey, that didn’t mean Hanako was going to stop his fun. He quite liked Ye-Jun’s dismissing his flirting, and having it irk Burnett would be a bonus.
"Don't tell me you of all people don't have a date for the ball? What about Rainwood? Where's he?"
Anybody could tell Hanako’s mood shifted. His eyes lost its earlier excitement, his hand immediately started awkwardly rubbing his forearm as a soothing gesture. He wasn’t getting better at concealing his emotions this year, it seemed. Before anyone could comment about it, Hanako showed them a grin, although weaker than his previous ones. “ I’m flattered you assume I’m charming enough to have dates to every ball I go to. But really, I just started to think it’s more fun to see where the night takes me. So far, I’ve never complained ” he sent a quick wink to Ye-jun and a knowing glance, eager to move on from the Rainwood conversation. Maybe Burnett noticed but Hanako at least made it clear it was not a topic he wanted to get into. One thing Hanako always appreciated about Burnett is how he wasn't nosy. At least from what Hanako knew.
Jack picked up his bag and walked towards his date, whispering a few things to which Hanako assumed he was not supposed to hear. “ You're not as slick as you think you are, you know “ he crossed his arms, with a roll of his eyes. “ I am able to take care of myself, thank you very much. '' he did not comment on the other two things Burnett said about him. Those were just facts. “But instead of trying to lose me in the maze, how about I promise to leave you two the second we get out of it?”. He suggested looking warily at the maze entrance. Especially worried after Burnett had brought up Rainwood. Mazes with dead ends, and a person he never wants to see again. Sounds like a start of a horror movie. That wouldn’t end well if he was unlucky. “ Unless of course, you guys would miss me too much to let me go “ he shrugged with a grin, his gaze lasting longer on Ye-Jun.

Aaron asked Lucia which area they should explore. "Oh, um, I don't mind. They both look beautiful." As per usual, the ball organisers had gone above and beyond to create a magical setting for their event. "We could wander around a little, maybe?" Then Lucia realised that Aaron was holding his arm out, and hurried to take it, so as to make up for the fact that she hadn't even noticed it at first. It had just been one of those moments where she hadn't been doing anything at all. A split second of silence. "Thank you." Lucia smiled at the compliment which Aaron gave her. "You do too." Then Lucia took a proper look at the boy's outfit. "You have your broom? Are you planning a dramatic exit later?" Lucia had almost forgotten that Aaron was a fan of broom sport. She didn't know how she could have managed to forget that; after all, her first interaction with him had been when she embroidered some wall art of a broomstick for him for a Secret Santa. Lucia wondered whether Aaron still had it. Maybe she should bring it up? But no, half the fun of a Secret Santa was that you didn't know who got the gift for you. A relentlessly ruthless military commander and front line combatant. He had no badges of honour to show off on this stash, but his build wouldn’t encourage anyone to carelessly mess with him, if they wanted to. Such is the fate of someone with a naturally intimidating aura. His clothes only enhanced what was already intimidating about him. His hair kept its usual buzz cut, but it seemed he had let it grow up a tad bit. The only eye-catching thing ( apart from his heart racing features ) is the red stash across his chest. It being the only thing that didn’t seem to follow the dark colour scheme he was going for. His stance and posture look confident as he walks around, but he was anything but.
His sunglasses tucked between the fabric of his chest pocket.
He heard there would be less flowers this spring ball, therefore he decided why not come join the fun. Spring balls always were such a thorn to his side. The last ball had made its main theme a whole flower fest. Sara knew if he even tried to join, he would end up frowning throughout the ball, hating being near such annoying things. He could tolerate a lot of things, but not flowers, no. And an abundance of that was just a big no. Still, he had missed going to Hogwarts Balls. They always seem to have their own fun. So knowing the ball this year wouldn’t be totally flower themed, he took the opportunity to get into uniform and strided towards the ball venue alone.
The uniform had reminded him of the cadet camps he used to go to for fun. Despite the gruelling activities, awful food and intolerable sleep schedules, he missed the conformity the uniforms and activities had. It was simple. Uncomplicated. Like a simple instruction guide that was easy to follow. Perhaps he was influenced by his beloved grandmother, who had her fair share of stories from her years in the army. Still, being it in gave him a sense of comfort, despite its difficulty to walk in and rather stiff fabric.
The first order of business was to pass through this unfamiliar maze. He ventured alone, too shy to ask others to join him and unbothered by what may lurk in the mazes. 4 years in magic school, and he was uncertain whether he had seen all the wizarding world has to offer. Following along random paths, he came across some pink bulbs that immediately got him frowning.
Ew. Pink.
His tolerance for pink had improved after wearing pink robes for years, but the sight of them still never failed to leave a bitter aftertaste in his mouth. He stayed clear of them. Just as he started regretting not bringing his broom, his eyes landed on peculiar jumping mushroom creatures.
Oh.
My.
God.
THEYRE SO CUTE?!? The goal of finding the exit seemed to have scurried to the back of his mind, being less and less relevant the more his eyes gazed upon the creatures. They jumped here and there, from one flower bush to another, and Sara couldn’t help but feel at ease. Instead of the exit, he opted to follow this one particular jumping mushroom, following wherever it goes. His face looking like he was ready to crush the creature with his bare hands. From a hug. A huge bone crushing hug. Hopefully, his face would not scare the mushroom (or anyone else looking at his direction). He would make no attempts to try and catch the creature, as tempting as it is. Nor would he touch the bushes they jumped between. But he certainly was rather close to them, eager for a better look at the mushroom. Allowing them to take him wherever they wanted to go.
