Wednesdays were usually Jaime's favourite day of the week, but this one was leaving her on edge. Nothing in particular had gone wrong, just the opposite, in fact. Despite her wishes, not a single door had tricked her, not a single class had she missed or gotten lost on the way to, and not a single test she'd gotten back with a grade below Acceptable. No, today was decidingly boring in her mind. Jaime knew it was odd to want something to go wrong, but she'd learned to watch out for perfect days. In her experience, they simply didn't exist. And if a day was going too perfect, like now, she knew something was a foot. This "perfect day" would spoil, and Jaime didn't want to be there when it did.
Picking at a bit of chicken, Jaime stared absentmindedly at her food. It was strange for her to not be plowing through it, but, again, today was a strange day. She wanted to hypothesize what would go wrong, but she figured it was no use. No matter how much she planned, or worried, the result would be the same: misery. It was the same throughout her life, and the perfect day had never ended well. Take her sixth birthday for example-- it started great. Orange balloons, blue confetti, lemon cake, everything her younger self could wish for. But just like she always, disaster struck in the form of a speeding delivery truck. She was sure the boy hadn't seen it coming, but nevertheless, twenty stitches in the hospital room followed.
With a sigh, she resolved to stop thinking about it and refilled her plate. Despite her lack of effort, she'd actually managed to clear off the chunk of chicken and rice she'd scooped onto her plate. Unfortunately, that was nowhere near enough food to run on for the rest of the day, especially if something went wrong at dinner. Which it probably would. Okay, she thought, Re-focus on the food.
Observing the table, she mentally jotted down her options that were in easy reach and acceptably edible. They were: chicken, rice, sandwiches, grapes, sausages, soup and sweet-smelling apples. Marking off the rice (it disagreed with her), the soup (too hot), the sausages (choking hazard), and the apples (too sweet smelling; poison likely), Jaime settled on a pb&j sandwich and a handful of grapes. She would have also liked to grab a leg of chicken, but a sixth year near her grabbed the last one before she could.
Jaime took a bite out of the sandwich, flicking a grape up into the air with the other hand. After a second, she caught it, and flung it up again. She continued this until she had swallowed the sandwich, and plunked the grape into her mouth. She usually found such tricks silly, but it wasn't like she caught the grape in her mouth. No, that would be too dangerous for today, not to mention childish. As she ate, she let her mind wander, and tried to think of anything but her impending doom.

Linda was coming a little bit late today for food. This time she spent some time outside, so now she was going to find somewhere to sit.
She came in and came to the long Gryffindor table. It was as usual crowded, and as she came late, her usual place was taken. She looked around and found a place.
There was plenty of food so she took some and let herself get lost in her thoughts. It was quite busy day and finally it was starting to be more nice. She got Outstanding today and also took some notes with everything she needed.
Suddenly some movement close to her attracted her eyes, making her come back to reality. There was a girl, flicking grapes one by one up to the air and catching them before eating. Interesting, Linda never saw someone doing like this.
"How are you doing it?" Perhaps it was a stupid question to ask, but at that moment she couldn't find any other words to ask.
She was wondering why this girl decided to do like this, not that it had to do anything with her, but there was something in her that was attracting Linda's mind. She decided to not think about it much, perhaps they could talk more and maybe even become friends.

This story is looking a lot like a tragedy now, Jaime thought depressingly as she tossed another grape up into the air. Again, she caught it easily in the tips of her fingers before popping it into her mouth. By now, she had cleared half the grapes in her pile, picking them off one by one. She was on her 17th when Jaime heard a voice from across the table.
"How are you doing it?" the other Gryffindor asked, curiosity clear in her voice. In response, Jaime blinked, and realised that the girl was talking about Jaime's trick. Jaime stared down at that 17th berry that was still poised in her hand, ready for lift off, and tilted her head, as if she didn't quite know either. She just did it, she didn't usually wonder how.
"I suppose," she murmured, thinking, "Well, I suppose that I never really thought about it." After a moment of pondering, Jaime rolled grape 17 across the table, over to the girl. Maybe talking to someone else would take her mind off of the grisly fate that awaited her. Who knows, she might even make a friend.
"Put your arm out, like this," she said, demonstrating, "with your elbow close to your side." She picked up grape #18, and continued, "Put it in between the crook of your point finger, and the middle one," Jaime adjusted her grape to match, "And gently flick your wrist."

Linda took a grape and started to try to follow explanation. Put your arm like this, with your elbow close to your side. Put it in between the crook of your point finger and the middle one. And gently flick your wrist.
It felt kinda strange a bit, but Linda liked to try new things, so she repeated it and grape went up to the air for some seconds and fell on Linda's plate as she didn't expect it to work. She felt so happy, making her feel like a child. It was something she surely wouldn't try outside Hogwarts. No one of her friends ever thought about something like this, maybe this girl has someone in her family from non-wizards. Although it doesn't matter, but I guess with her I can know a lot of new things I never knew before.
"Thank you so much. Did someone teach you this? I never saw anyone doing something like that before." Although she wouldn't know much as she was always around pureblood wizards and children.
"My name is Linda. Linda Ramirez. What's your name?" Linda felt like it was a great time to introduce herself. Perhaps they could be friends.
She was also thinking if they had some common hobbies, but this she could know later if they will be friends.

Jaime had never really been taught anything, besides the things her parents encouraged. From her skill on a skateboard to the drums, she'd learned her best abilities by herself. But that wasn't a bad thing to Jaime, quite the opposite, actually. Without instruction, she was free from judgment and 'right' way of doing things. She could experiment and do things her way without anybody holding her back, or questioning her. Jaime was what some would describe as 'free-spirited', and others as 'foolish'. She preferred to former; her grandma'am preferred the latter. But who cared what that old bat thought anyway?
“I don’t remember how I learned,” she replied instead, not wanting to sound self-centred. Jaime ate her last grape, which popped satisfyingly in her mouth. As she did, the other girl introduced herself as Linda, Linda Ramirez. Jaime liked that name, recalling that it meant ‘pretty’. She wondered if Linda knew this.
“My name is Jaime,” Jaime hummed, licking her lips. Her own name meant “supplanter” which in turn meant ‘to take the place of a superior’. She’d always thought it was ironic, especially since Grandma’am had obviously suggested it. Well, the joke was on her, for Jaime would never follow in her parents’ footsteps. “Jaime Doon. You are a first year, no?”
Linda certainly looked like one, but Jaime could never be quite sure. In general, she never really paid attention to the ages of others. It wasn’t important to her, and neither were most surface level things like looks or gender. It all seemed superficial, but it was entirely unrelated to why she asked. If they were both first years, then they might have classes together. Jaime thought that she would like that. At the moment, she knew no one, and while she didn’t mind, her zoning out left her with an empty sheet and nothing in her brain.

"Oh, really? But you do it like professional. It's really great. Thank you for teaching me." Linda smiled. Surely this girl must be able to teach her a lot, so it surely was worth it to try to become friends.
"Yeah, I am a first year too." So this girl's name is Jaime. Nice name. Linda looked at Jaime once more. Could she become her friend? Linda didn't know the meaning of name but neither she cared about it. It was personality and actions that were important to her. Not even a blood status, although most of pureblood cared about it a lot.
"Do you mind telling me more about you? I just thought maybe we could become friends, if you want for sure." Linda decided to just ask this girl instead of guessing and imagining how much they could do together as friends.
That was completely okay if Jaime doesn't want to be friends, it's just that it's always better to know for sure, isn't it... Also she would know if Jaime could except her as she is, so now was the best time for it.
Meanwhile she finished eating and started to think about time she was first time ever getting friends in her hometown. Yeah, it was nice, some were asking her first, some just from friends, ssomeshe asked herself as now with Jaime. Oh, they for sure will go to some lessons together, so maybe if not now, they eventually will become friends.
Linda felt bad this girl was really good person, so she really wished they would be friends. Maybe even best friends but who knows.

"Um, sure," Jaime replied hesitantly. What was she supposed to tell her? "I'm a muggleborn, from Ireland," Was that enough? She hoped so. She didn't want to say anything more. Sure, she liked Linda well enough, but Jaime wasn't a big peoples person. Feeling like that wasn't enough, she added, "I play the drums, and do a lot of skateboarding, as well as hockey," she paused. That wasn't entirely true, at least not these days. After a second, she clarified, "Well, I don't do much hockey anymore, but I used too. Now I mostly do fencing."
Fencing was a compromise for Grandma'am, who considered Hockey too boy-ish for any proper girl to pursue past the age of 10. Jaime's mom had originally gotten her set up with it, but once Grandma'am had opposed, Jaime's father shut it down. Instead, he signed her up for fencing. It was an in between sport. Proper enough for Grandma'am, but also physical enough for Jaime. She hated non-contact sports. They didn't have the excitement, the rush, the danger that Jaime loved.
So, fencing wasn't all that bad. It was actually something she ended up liking a lot, but she often missed her days of playing hockey. Maybe it had only been children's hockey, but it was hockey nevertheless.
Passively, Jaime asked, "Do you have any hobbies?" Maybe she and Linda had something in common.

Muggleborn. That's cool, she could be my close friend and teach me something about muggles. "Wow, that's cool. I am coming from pureblood family, England, but please don't worry, I don't care about blood status." Linda smiled in a shy way. Will she still be nice or she will treat me differently now? I know a lot of purebloods don't like muggleborns, but in my family it's quite opposite.
"Your hobbies sound great, but could you tell me more about skateboarding and fencing? I don't think I know about it much." Linda really got interested in this new friend. Jaime sounded like someone who likes sport and music, that's nice. Hockey. Did I hear about it? I don't know but I already asked about other two, so I won't ask about this one as well.
"Oh yeah. I play guitar and piano, crochet, run. I also like reading and I wanted to learn to cook using some spells. Also I love animals and currently was searching to try something new." A lot of different hobbies. Linda decided to not add more as she named the ones she liked doing lately.
"You know, since you play drums, maybe we could play together? If you want for sure, just an idea I got." This could go in a nice way. They could play drums and piano or drums and guitar, maybe she could learn something from Jaime.

"Wow, that's cool. I am coming from a pureblood family, England, but please don't worry, I don't care about blood status," Linda responded, smiling shyly and leaving Jaime slightly confused. Did people really care about that kind of thing here? Linda said she didn't, but since she mentioned it, that must mean at least some people cared... Shrugging, Jaime reasoned that even if other people did, she certainly didn't. "Your hobbies sound great, but could you tell me more about skateboarding and fencing? I don't think I know about it much."
"Skateboarding is great... I brought my board to Hogwarts, but I doubt I'll get to use it much," pondered Jaime, as she looked around the room. "Fencing's also cool. I'd love to see if anyone here could spar..." Jaime doubted many could, what with the fact that you weren't exactly supposed to bring swords to a high school, but that was besides the point.
"Oh yeah. I play guitar and piano, crochet, run. I also like reading and I wanted to learn to cook using some spells. Also I love animals and currently was searching to try something new," finished Linda as Jaime nodded absently. She thought that maybe Linda had a bit too many hobbies, but she admired the girl for trying so many things.
"You know, since you play drums, maybe we could play together? If you want for sure, just an idea I got."
Jaime thought about the offer. Usually, she liked to play alone, and feel as if she was in her own world. That's what music was to her: an escape. Not necessarily from anything in particular, just from life in general. However, Linda seemed nice, and it would be rude to say no now. Besides, some rec time wasn't a terrible idea...
"Mmm, okay," Jaime answered with a smile creeping on to her face, "When are you free? We could use the rehearsal room."

Linda listened to Jaime's answer. It sounded really interesting. Skateboarding? I never tried it, is it hard? Linda naturally was quite interested in learning something new. She had her favorite hobbies that she was doing more than other ones, but still was opened to anything new. I am free today but I don't know when I am free else. What about you? Linda looked at Jaime. It was interesting to talk to her and Linda didn't care about time they will spend here talking else. Today she didn't have more plans and her homework was done already. But she felt that probably she should say that it was okay if Jaime didn't want to play musical instruments with her. She decided to say it after some time of thinking. It's okay though if you don't want to. We can do something else that you will find interested and will want to share. Music for her was something she enjoyed and didn't mind to share. But sometimes she used it as escape and in such times she didn't want anyone to join her. Also they didn't know each other much yet, so she could understand if Jaime didn't really want to share her playing now. |
