Shivering he shoved himself as close as he dared to the glass of the shop window to hide from the burst of wind absolutely destroying his hair. He batted at his bangs, wordless complaining through a murderous scowl as black hair smacked against his lips again anytime he even dared to try to take a sip of his bloody hot chocolate!

“That’s it- KIM!” He floundered about with his arm to grab onto his friend's jacket as he flopped down onto the cold bench, throwing himself at the mercy of the wind. “Do you have a pin?” Another strand of hair smacked into his eyes, he resolutely shoved a hand through his hair and truly considered the idea of going to get it cut right then and there. “Please, I am literally dying here. The wind is kicking my ass, and I can’t take a sip without getting hair.” He complained, shaking his warm cup as if to make a point. “I should have gotten a straw…”

When getting ready today to hang out with Kim he hadn’t even thought about his hair. He’d been sure to dress warm, though he had forgotten his gloves again; and had grabbed his bag and Kim’s late Christmas gift which still sat in his bag and had called it a day. He had his things. He was dressed warm. That was all Elsian needed. He hadn’t counted on his hair being the bane of his existence when it came to drinking a damn hot chocolate!

He should have thought about that. His hair had gotten a bit longer after all, and was as untamable as ever, but he hadn’t and the few hair pins he had were in his enchanted bag. The one he couldn’t take here.

A hat would have been nice. But he hadn’t thought he;d need one!

…at least his hands were warm.

“Or braid it back?” He questioned, unsure, “that’s a thing you can do without a pin or tie right?” His hair wasn’t quite long enough to need a hair tie, and any braid would be short and tiny and probably look ridiculous but by Merlin sacrifices had to be made in this horrible wind!

It wasn’t snowing like the day before or hailing like it’d been at his aunts so that was something…. Despite the snow still on the ground and the bits of ice on the sidewalks it’d been a nice day to hang out. To go look through the shops and eat and just have fun. It was getting later now but they still had about an hour or so before it started to rapidly get dark and he didn’t need to worry about going home til later tonight.

“And the stores here stink.” He added solemnly. “I think we already hunted down all the fun ones in the nearby blocks.” He took advantage of the icy wind blowing right into his face to take a big gulp of his drink, possibly sacrificing any of Kims hard work had the boy actually taken the Gryffindors words to heart and tried taming the hair flying wildly with each gust of wind. A worthy sacrifice for the sake of getting a sip.

“Maybe we should move on.” He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees and tilted his face towards the other. “We could probably catch a movie or something…the park was pretty lit up too with lights and stuff, maybe they have something cool?”

Kim wasn't much bothered by the coldness.

The reason for this? Mostly because he was used to being in extreme temperatures in West London.

But then, his body had always been able to adjust to different temperatures easily, unlike many people. It was probably in his genes or something and that was the reason. He wasn't entirely sure what the reason behind him being able to do this was. Dressed in a warm multi-colored fur jacket, a long-sleeved green pastel dragon-designed dress shirt, a plain white shirt beneath that and a pair of dark jeans, Kim was very comfortable. The green haired teen glanced down at his friend, who was becoming a bit annoyed by his hair.

Kim's own green hair fluttered about his face and got into his eyes now and then. But he wasn't drinking anything at the moment, even though he had a cup of hot chocolate in his hand too. As Elsian let out another exclamation, the boy grabbed onto his jacket and dragged him down onto a bench. Kim couldn't help but smirk at the way Elsian looked right now. It was then that he asked him for a pin or something to help him keep his bangs back, so he could drink his hot chocolate without adding hair to it. "I don't know, Sia....."

"Hair actually is quite good for you to eat."

"It's filled with protein!" Kim teased him but rummaged inside his satchel to see if he had anything.

"Ah! I found something, give me a second here." The green haired teen told Elsian and got up to make his way over to where Elsian sat, only a few centimeters away from him. Kim drew closer to him and then leaned down, his face drawing steadily closer to Elsian's own. To a casual observer, it might seem as if he was going in for a kiss. From behind, Kim would look as if he was actually kissing Elsian, when he stooped and reached out for the other boy's head. It might look as if Kim was going for a romantic moment...

From behind at least. But in reality, Kim was merely trying to help his friend out. Kim's fingers curled around Elsian's long bangs and drew them up out of his eyes and face to the top of his head. Once there, he let his other hand come up and used a hairband to tie the bangs there into an apple-bun type of style. Once he'd managed to do so, Kim gave Elsian a slight smile. "You should be good now." He told him and thought for a few seconds about Elsian's earlier words. "But I'll take you up on that braiding thing..."

Kim told him, letting his blue eyes flicker over Elsian.

"I've always wanted to see what your hair would look like braided! You said I could just a second ago, so I'm going to take you up on that offer later on!" Kim told him with a smirk.

It was nice to be able to relax for a time with a friend after the holidays were over and not have to worry about his family. The Chens had already gone back home but the other Sato family members were staying for a few more days. Even though he didn't mind them that much, Kim would rather be on his own, or with friends. At least those he considered to be his 'friends', something he still wasn't sure about. Did the people he thought of as friends, consider him to be their friend? Or was it just his foolishness wanting to believe????

Kim blinked as he realized Sia had just said something and had to think for a moment to recall his friend's words. "Ah, right. There's probably some leftover festivities going on there. You want to check it out?" He asked, waiting to see what Sia wanted to do with their time. Kim was open as to what they did, as long as they had fun doing it and there weren't large crowds of people/cats around him. It was strange though, sometimes large crowds bothered him and other times they didn't and he was fine. Weird, right????

Go figure.

Elsians stomach churned at thought, face twisting in a disgusted wince. “Eww,” he hissed, giving the other a pained look, “Kim that's disgusting!” It was a whine at best; how could the younger Gryffindor put this horrible fact into existence for Elsian? He’d never be able to gain that blissful ignorance back, he’d have happily gone the rest of his life without hearing those words.

“You are horrible.” A grumble as the other voiced his find. “The absolute worst-”

The rest of the words were cut off as the other grabbed his hair, Elsian pulling an exaggerated face at the other when the feeling of his hair being styled in a way it wasn’t used to. “You’re gonna make me look stupid aren’t you.” He deadpanned, squinting at the other when he pulled back with a smile. He turned around to catch his reflection in the store fronts window and yep, it looked ridiculous! He took a sip of his drink, half listening to Kims talk of braids as a stronger burst of wind blew past them, the little air bun that was his bangs stayed strong however. So hey, it worked!

“Well your hairstyling skills are allowing me a hair free drink so I guess you can braid my hair.” Another sip, and by God if it wasn’t amazing being able to actually drink his hot chocolate, as he twisted back around to face Kim as they spoke. “Just don’t get any funny ideas about dying it,” a playful squint at the other, “spell my hair green or pink and it's a prank war. You will never know peace again.”

Elsian eyed the other with a raised brow when the silence dragged out, smirking when Kim finally seemed to catch up to what he was saying. “Yeah, it might be something cool if it’s still drawing attention.” He took another mouthful of the warm drink as he stood, emptying it with one last sip before going to throw it into the trash. “C’mon,” he scraped some of the ice off his shoe before looking back up, “while it’s not too crowded yet.”

It wasn’t too far of a walk.

Not usually at least. But the icy sidewalk and cold bursts of wind made it seem longer than it usually would. That plus the closer they got the more crowded it seemed to get, the curse of popular shops and cafes in this cold weather. He huffed when a group shuffled by, bumping into him and his bag, throwing a glance over his shoulder. It was clear to see trying to stay together in this crowd was harder than he originally thought when he realized just how far away he’d gotten from his friend.

Pressing himself against a storefront he waited for a bit for the other to catch up before snatching onto the other's sleeve, fumbling a bit before grabbing their wrist. “Sorry,” he called over the noise of the shop they were near. He’d totally almost lost sight of the other. And bloody hell, that would’ve been a nightmare to deal with. “Let's try that again, this time without me leaving you behind.” He joked as they continued to walk, mostly side by side.

Thankfully it wasn’t long before some of the worst of the crowd broke free and they finally reached their destination. It kinda looked like a park but all dolled up in decorations to match the festive tones of the nearby shops of the semi open shopping district located right here. Light’s were starting to turn on as it began to grow a bit darker, a large Christmas tree still put up with fake presents underneath and what seemed to be said festivities that’d been drawing the crowds.

It was an ice rink.

As they got closer and the crowds gave way to more open space Elsian finally gave up his grip, giving the other boy a bit more space as Elsi went ahead and leaned on the little wall barrier surrounding the outdoor rink. “Huh.” He mused, eyes a bit wide with curiosity as he watched people skate. It made sense now that he thought about it, this was the season for it after all and; he looked up at the strands of lights illuminating the dimming area and snow, it was pretty too. Of course a bunch of people would be ice skating right now but somehow he hadn’t really thought this is what they’d find. “I…didn’t really think it would be an outdoor ice rink.”

Kinda a shame.

It looked fun but…He glanced down at the ice, wincing a bit when someone lost control and fell, tripping their friend with a laugh.

He didn’t know how to skate.

“Well, that’s a bust.” He mumbled, eyeing the rink.

Elsian's reaction was just what he'd expected from him.

The boy's grumbles made him smirk, especially the one about him making Elsian look horrible afterward.

"Of course not. You don't need me to help you look stupid, you can do it on your own just fine!" Kim teased him again and when the job was done, leaned back on the bench to take a sip of his own hot chocolate. Ironically, the breeze didn't make his own hair flutter into his mouth, apparently it was only targeting Elsian. As the boy agreed to letting him style and braid his hair, Kim grinned at him. For once, it was genuine. "You gave your word! I'm not letting you out of it later on." The teen warned Elsian...

Elsian twisted around to face him a second later and said some choice words of his own. Kim held his hands up into the air, a gesture for surrender, and nodded to him. "Alright. I won't spell your hair green or pink! I give you my word!" He told him, jotting the important information down inside his brain for future reference. Once he gave his word, he never broke it, for any reason. "But tell me, why don't you want to? Do you think it won't look good on you?" Kim asked, curious. Was there a specific reason??

Kim watched as Elsian finished his drink.

Then, went to throw it into the trash and scraped some ice off the bottom and sides of his shoe.

Elsian spoke, telling him to hurry up and Kim nodded. He grabbed his bag from the bench and slung the strap over his shoulder, heading off after his friend. Since Kim still had to carry his cup of hot chocolate, he took a little longer to catch up to Elsian, who had nothing to spill now. When he finally caught up to him, the boy grabbed his sleeve and then his wrist a few seconds later. It was a way to ensure they didn't end up getting separated again. Kim was fine with it. Since he knew about it beforehand and it was Sia, it was fine....

With Kim's left hand in Sia's grasp and his right hand occupied with the hot chocolate, he had no free hands left to do anything else. As Elsian continued to drag him to their eventual destination, Kim couldn't help but enjoy being out here alone with him. It was a nice and relaxing feeling and he found himself wishing he could freeze time. As Elsian dragged him into the midst of the festivities taking place, Kim let his blue eyes flicker over the area. It was an ice rink. Well, that was cool, no pun intended. Elsian's grip loosened a little....

And Kim glanced over at him.

It didn't look like Elsian found this activity exciting, although there was some kind of look in his eyes.

Kim couldn't quite place what it was or what it meant but it wasn't dislike. Or hate. Nor was it interest or love. What was that emotion in Elsian's eyes?! It started to drive him nuts. He had to figure out the reason behind that look in his friend's eyes. The only way to do so was to either ask or get Elsian to participate in this event and find out during that time. Sia was still eyeing the rink. Did that mean he wanted to do it? Or he didn't want to do it? Kim drew closer and slung an arm around Elsian's shoulders and neck. "Yo, Sia..."

"Want to go ice skating?" He asked, testing the waters. Elsian's response would tell him more about that look he'd given the ice rink earlier. At least this was helping get his mind away from --- which was good.

WOW! Just-

“Wow,” Elsian gave the other a haughty look, tossing some of his hair about for dramatic effect. “Thanks for nothing, tweedle dee, I’ll remember this slight against my honor when you're at your weakest, mark my words.” He threatened just to be dramatic.

“Perhaps I’ll cut my hair,” he sniffed, fingers tugging at a stray lock by his ear, “just chop it all off to rob you of your braiding dreams.”

Hmm. But if Kim was promising…then he supposed it’d be okay. But just in case- he held up his pinky with the utmost seriousness, “pinky swear then.” The act would only be dropped upon the other swearing once again, in which case Elsian would shrug at the others question with an easy smile. “I dunno what to tell you, I just like my hair and-” Well he tried to imagine it. Colorful hair though…it just wouldn’t suit him. He just knew, had this uncanny feeling. Maybe it was silly, and the boy perhaps wouldn’t be against spelling a strand or 2 a color to show house pride or for a holiday but otherwise… “I just think it’d look bad. Most colors really, I don’t think they’d really suit me.” He was much too plain for it.

As far as activities went, ice skating had never been high on the priority list. He hated deep water, especially if there wasn’t a boat nearby. Sure if he was close to shore it was fine but every time he’d seen people skating it was on natural ice, lake, pond, which- hah, no.

Just no. You could not pay him to go stand, let alone fumble uselessly about in skates while on the ice. Ice where he knew there was a deep, icy death trap right under his feet just waiting to swallow him up the moment the ice broke. No, no, no. A million times no.

He huffed, startled out of his thoughts at the others arm around his neck. He hummed in reply, curious as the other spoke-

Ah…

“Oh…um.” Did he? He’d never given much thought to actually trying in the past, but that was then, and this was-

Well frankly the idea made his stomach twist anxiously.

But this wasn’t natural ice over a lake. It was a safe, boring muggle rink! No deadly water waiting to swallow you up, so safe-ish, if you could ignore the pains of falling on the ice and the blades of the skates… they couldn’t actually be that dangerous right?

It kinda looked fun! In a scary, distant sort of way…

“I don’t think that’s such a good idea,” he laughed, bumping into the other, “seeing how I have NO idea how to skate.” Maybe he could learn eventually. But- “I’d probably just be dragging you down.” He admitted. “Like, literally. I’d probably fall down a lot on my own, probably not the most fun for you.” He offered with an embarrassed grin.

Kim couldn't help but chuckle.

"It's fine, you don't have to remember!" He shot back at his mischief making friend.

Kim looked fake-shocked when Elsian threatened to cut off all his hair and shook his head. "Do you really want to rob yourself of your good looks? What if Kitty didn't recognize you because of this? Poor thing, I'd have to take her under my wing instead if that happens." Kim said and heaved a fake sigh as he glanced over at Elsian. "You see... there are pros and cons to every side of the coin. I think you'd be better off just letting me do whatever I want with your hair. Easier for you."

He said with a wink in Elsian's direction. But his friend relented and decided to keep his locks and Kim nodded as the boy asked him to pinky swear on not spelling his hair green or pink. Once the two had twined their pinkies together and made the 'contract' with eachother, Kim nodded again as Elsian spoke. So it wasn't that he didn't like dyeing his hair, he just thought the colors wouldn't suit him. He could work with that and Kim started to plot for the future. Green and pink really didn't suit him anyway, just as Sia had said.

Kim's friend responded to his earlier question.

Giving the excuse of not knowing how to ice skate and he raised a brow in Elsian's direction at this.

"I think it's fine. I'm sure there are lots of inexperienced skaters on the ice. It looks like an event meant to just be fun from here. It doesn't seem to be a competition. I'm not an experienced ice skater but I do know how to do it and can probably teach you if you want to learn. If you're worried about getting in the way, don't be. We'll just hang around the edges, that's the best place for beginners anyway." Kim said and leaned down to quickly peck Elsian's cheek.

"There. I gave you some courage. So. You up for the challenge of learning how to ice skate? It'll be fun!" The second year duelist said as he looked down at his friend.

As if Kitty wouldn’t recognize him! “She would know,” he sniffed with a petulant look, “she’s the best, my perfect spider child, she’d know me through anything.” Perhaps. But Elsian liked to think so anyway and would stand by it.

Contracts and pros and cons aside, the other boy had a point. Elsian didn’t much care for too short hair and even if he did…well he was a bit lazy about getting it cut.

He raised a brow at the other as Kim spoke, smiling with a tiny chuckle as his fellow skating failures were mentioned. “And I’ll put them all to shame with my beautiful face planting I’m sure.” But Kim was right, it wasn’t like there wasn’t room and it wasn’t like this was a competition…he was just making excuses. They weren’t even very good ones. It made him feel a little silly honestly even as his stomach did a little flip as he watched a skater take a tumble, waiting for the ice to crack or show signs of giving out-

But it didn’t. Obviously it didn’t. And maybe that plus Kim's words did give him a little courage…

“Yeah,” he swallowed, grin a bit weak but still real enough despite what he was agreeing to, “yeah, you’re right. It might be fun.”

Pushing off the barrier he gave Kim a friendly bump in the shoulder as he moved, “and I do feel a little braver.” A teasing but nonetheless honest statement. “C’mon let's go rent some skates before I think better and back out.” Because if he thought too much he just might try.

But it was fine! Fine, fine, fine… It wasn’t like he was internally beginning to freak out the tiniest bit as they looked through the options at the ice rink booth. And trying on the skates and already feeling his legs wobble uncomfortably totally wasn’t a problem! Not at all, it was fine. This would be fun, great even! “I hate this.” He laughed, high pitched and slightly maniac; they weren’t even on the ice and he was struggling as he stared at his own feet. “This is fine,” he lied to himself aloud as he took another step up to the ice, and with willpower that was quickly dwindling he stepped onto the ice before he could overthink it, before Kim could offer help or advice as he also got his skates and put them on, before he could back out and wasn’t that the worst fucking decision he’d ever made.

He clung to the side, feeling as if his feet were only one slip of movement away from giving out under him. “It’s not fine, it’s not fin-”he slipped, half disappearing behind the rink's walls as he barely succeeded in catching himself and dragging his sorry self upright. “It’s not fun, Kim help me-!” he whined demanded with a hiss and look of betrayal, as if Kim’s had known this would happen and was therefore all his fault. Everyone could shut up and ignore how he hadn’t actually moved from his claimed area, latching on with would could only be described as a death grip.

The moment Kim was within easy grabbing distance Elsians would flail an arm out towards the other, snatching Kim's hand, arm, hell even the back of his coat would do so long as he had the other to stabilize him.

Damn logic. Damn balance. If he was going down Kim was going down with him!

“I’m going to fall. I’m going to fall, Kim I’m going to fall and break a bloody ankle and I’m taking you down with me.”

Kim couldn't help but grin at him.

Sia really had such faith in his spider. The same as Kim had with Puffie. Their connection was unbreakable.

The green haired teen smirked at Elsian's words about face-planting and slung an arm around his shoulders. "...I mean, if you put it that way, how could anyone come close to your skill? You should teach me how to do it too!" He teased him. As Elsian finally began to move, bumping his shoulder good naturedly in the process, Kim nodded at his words. He followed after him as Elsian made his way over to the area where you rented skates. Elsian seemed to be going really fast, probably to calm his nerves about them.

He steadied him as Sia complained about the skates and once the boy was able to stand on his own, albeit unsteadily, Kim released him to tackle his own skates. Elsian moved out onto the ice without him and clung to the sides of the rink. Kim quickly finished putting his skates on, just in time to hear a shriek from Elsian and a demand for him to come help. He couldn't help but smile and made his way over to him. "I'm right here! Don't panic!" Kim tried to reassure him and wrapped his right arm around Elsian's slender waist....

While his left arm balanced himself, Kim steadied both of them.

"You should have waited for me!" Kim teased Elsian, his grip on his waist firm and comforting.

"You can cling to me as much as you want but when you feel better, keep one hand on the edge of the rink and let your other arm stretch up until it's a straight line outward from your body. You can use that arm to balance yourself a bit more. Don't worry about your lower body, I'll hold onto you for awhile until you can balance on your own." Kim instructed and as Elsian started to panic, telling him he'd fall and that he'd take him down with him, the teen shook his head.

"Don't think you're going to fall, think positive thoughts. I'm right here with you and won't let anything bad happen to you. Don't worry too much, all you need to do is relax and trust me for now. We'll take it one step at a time." Kim told him and waited to see how Elsian would react to his words. "Tell me, have you ever done this with anyone else before? Or is this your first time?" He asked, curious. Maybe thinking about a question would give Sia some peace of mind, distract him a bit....

“It’s too late,” he hissed, fingers practically like claws as he clung to the side, “I’m panicking.” There was a itty bitty hint of hysteria in the crack of his voice as he somehow pulled himself back up, only for his leg to fly out from underneath himself, “I’m falling, I’m panicking. Kim-”

Elsian clung to the younger boy, fingers digging into the fabric of the other boy's coat from where he had a death grip on Kim's arm. He wasn’t letting go. Refused to let go.

It was lucky that Kim was level headed enough to help him. If it’d been any other Gryffindor there was a high chance Elsian woulda just brought the poor fool down with him.

He grit his teeth, wobbling as he tensed before catching himself with Kim’s help. It was hard to think positive. Hard to think at all beyond the shakiness in his limbs and the stuttering beat of his anxious heart. What thoughts that did linger were unpleasant. The wild imagination of the ice somehow cracking to break and plunge them into freezing water, the way his limbs shook and how little control he had, how it’d only take one wrong mov-

“I’m positive I’m gonna break something.” He growled bleakley before scoffing lightheartedly at Kims words, “yeah well…I was positive I’d be able to at least stand. Goes to show how good thinking positive is-” A slip. His foot flying out from under him before Kim helped stay upright. It was tough. Really tough. Tougher than learning to fly, than staying awake in astronomy, dare he say worse than all the stairs at Hogwarts.

Still, listen he did. Lazy he may be, Elsian hadn’t ever been a quitter. Not really.

Death grip on the rail he slowly let his other arm drift up to help him shakily balance. Some witty banter was on the tip of his tongue as they slowly, very, very slowly got to a point Elsi wasn’t in danger of taking them both out with a single, wobbly slide but it got dragged into a laugh instead. A small, shaky thing but a laugh nonetheless. Maybe because of how ridiculous the thought was? Because no, he hadn’t. His horrible lack of skill on the ice was probably proof enough, anyone with eyes would be able to tell Elsi was new to this, struggling too, and any other time that might’ve made Elsian feel at least the tiniest bit of embarrassment but it was quite hard to feel ashamed when you were more worried about falling and dying.

“No.” It felt like an eternity before he was able to slowly drag his eyes away from his feet and briefly shook with the effort as he looked to his friend. “Never I-” The thought of frozen ice and deep water made his heart jump to his throat. Green eyes looked towards the ice. Both their feet. “I don’t…” A pause.

“It’s stupid. And unlikely…” A small bit of sheepishness made its way into the older Gryffindors tone, “but I was always too afraid the ice would break.”

As they spoke, he didn’t even realize his nerves began to relax the more he forced himself to respond. To focus on Kim instead of his feet and the iron grip he had on the side of the wall.

“Stupid right?” He joked.
