Samantha was about to say that Dee should listen to her when the other did. "Listening to me sounds like a great idea," she nodded slowly as if she was considering the idea and approving it in her mind. "Also who said you know better than me?" a disapproving glare was given, "Me! The wisest and smartest person in the whole universe? I honestly doubt that you know better than me," she questioned the other, knowing really well Dee was older and knew more than her. She had been prefect for longer, captained the dueling team from the start, and was already a fourth year.
Dee complimented Bea, saying she was smart enough to see when rules were guidelines, which rewarded the fourth year with another disapproving glare. As it was added that Samantha still needed to figure some things out, the girl sighed dramatically. The potato that was lying in front of her suddenly seemed like a perfect thing to throw at Dee to get her to shut up. It wasn't her fault if she would give in to it, sometimes Dee just asked for a potato to be thrown at her head. But Samantha knew she shouldn't so she let the older girl ramble on.
An offended gasp came from the brunette as Dee claimed her dueling practice wasn't as beneficial as hers. "That's just because you have been dueling longer and are older!" Samantha replied grumpily. "Besides, I lost my first duel because you kept getting blindfolded," she said before sipping her juice. Despite losing her first duel, Samantha loved it. The banter, the thrill of finally being on stage and her partner. With the mention of Professor Iwasaki, the third year let out a little giggle. "I won't report having fun unless it involves rule-breaking," she assured Bea. "Rule-breaking like taking you, a second-year student, to Hogsmeade does need reporting," she glanced at Dee to moniter her reaction.
Honestly, Samantha was surprised when Dee reacted so calmly to her comment about calling her Dealla. The brunette had at least expected an annoyed glare or a sassy comment in which she was called Sam-Minnie. But no, she was only told to shut up. An air kiss was blown Dee's way as a reply to her words.
"I wouldn't! I am not that bad that I am counting down the seconds," she replied. People who hurried into the common room 30 seconds late, wouldn't be called out. She could let that slide, but 2 minutes... That was a different story. "If they really had to help somebody that's a different story," she agreed with Dee, probably for the first time. As she turned to Bea, she share: "I let somebody go who I caught swimming in the great lake, which is extremely dangerous. They were helping somebody who was drowning, I am not heartless." That day hadn't been detention less, as the two students who had just gone for a swim were rewarded with an afternoon spent with her.
Her right eyebrow was slightly raised when Bea talked about people not liking her. "Do you hate a police officer who is doing their job and giving somebody a speeding ticket? A police officer who is trying to keep the road safe?" she questioned the girl. If nobody followed the rules, what were they worth? If the rules weren't there, what would be her compass aiming her in the right direction? A world without rules was a world filled with chaos. Rules were made for a reason by rationally thinking adults who knew what was bad. "I didn't make the rules, I am just making sure that they are being followed for everybody's safety. If people dislike me for that it is their problem," she shrugged.
A sheepish smile appeared on her face when Bea shared her idea that Samantha wouldn't give Dee detention, and the third year choose not to comment on it. Looking away from the other two girls, she was suddenly very interested in the floating candles above their heads.

Dee huffed in amusement, shifting in her seat to have an easier time looking at both Sam and Bea. "Me. I said it. Literally just now. Please pay attention, Samantha." She grinned at Bea, winking conspiratorially. "And if you continue like that, I bet Bea's gonna agree with me too, soon enough. Isn't that right, Bea?" As would any impartial jury, let's be honest.
As the banter continued on, jibes and comments jumping back and forth effortlessly, Dee felt herself relax. She'd be lying if she said it hadn't been a tough year so far; there were times she felt like she was still recovering from the events of last fall, still desperately trying to find her way back to who she'd been. But it was moments like this that she felt like herself, even if that self had maybe changed a little on the way.
"Maybe we wouldn't have lost if I didn't have to carry us both," she responded pointedly, grimacing at the memory of that duel. Truly, that hadn't been a lot of fun. She hated blindfolds, and her (somewhat ironic) blindspot when it came to that specific spell. It shouldn't be that hard to dodge them when she managed to dodge nearly anything else, right? "Also, I haven't lost a duel since. How about you, Sam-Minnie?" And she'd do all she could to make sure that stayed true for the upcoming stage. Her nature demanded no less, ambitious and competitive to a fault, she'd always been like that. It would be no exaggeration to say that Dee could turn anything into a competition, as proven by the fact that she'd turned a conversation that was meant to give advice to a new prefect into a competition over who could sway her to follow their own ideology.
But then, for once, she didn't really feel the need to win. It was fun, for sure, the rivalry, the banter. But she didn't mind so much the outcome; was really only here to tease Sam about all her obsessively sharp lines. Except... maybe even those were not as clear as they had once been.
While Dee raised an eyebrow in amusement at Sam's insistence that she wouldn't give a detention for someone being only seconds late on curfew, the fact that she'd let go of someone breaking rules because they'd been helping someone (even if it had been saving a life), was news to her. Huh. She remembered Sam's strict insistence that no exceptions were to be made, ever, during their fight last year. Maybe her friend could learn, after all.
But that didn't mean she wasn't still ridiculously naive. Dee coughed into her glass of water, amusement shining from her eyes at the claim that people didn't dislike police officers for doing their job. "Uh... yeah. Sure." The words weren't convincing at all. "No one would ever complain about a police officer giving them a parking ticket. Never." She didn't have to bring down all of Sam's illusions about the world today. Maybe tomorrow.
At least Bea seemed to have a sense of humour, and Dee grinned at her new friend. "I appreciate your concern, but don't worry, I can handle Sam without a badge just fine. But make no mistake, she'd try to give me detention if she thought I was breaking rules, no questions asked. Sweet Sam? You should get to know her better."

Picking up a goblet of pumpkin juice, she nearly spat the drink out at Sam's words, the liquid i her throat turning into a harsh cough. Surely Sam didn't think herself that self-important? "Surely...you don't mean that?" she wheezed. Dee was older and from Beatrice's memory a prefect longer than Sam, and especially Bea's incy-wincy month long stint. She shifted to look at Dee, her lips quirking slightly in agreeance at Dee's question. "Maybe...Although maybe Sam has a point. She may not be the wisest in the universe," she turned to Sam grinning, "that's a slight exaggeration, but I reckon she's wise for staying a prefect." At that, Bea turned back to sipping her pumpkin juice innocently. What was with her and inciting flames wherever she went? Good grief, Ma would've washed her mouth out with soap with the way Bea was being smart. And not in the good way either.
At the mention of duelling and teams, Bea pursed her lips. She hadn't interacted much with anyone on the team. The next round, her first, was coming up this weekend. Nerves shot through her at just the thought of finally being able to participate, and she clenched her goblet in apprehension. "You lost your first duel?" The question was directed at Sam, but since both girls had been in it, it was open for both to answer. "This weekend will be my first. First official duel mind you. I've had a bit of practice with Adelaide Barlowe and Avery Leveret." Bea didn't know if both names were familiar, but Adelaide's should have been. She was co-captain with Sam. And since Dee was on the team, well, no further explanation should have been needed.
Sam's lake comment was interesting, and Bea mentally noted that she'd have to ask Sam about it one day. Bea had heard about numerous 'fun time escapades' in the Lake. Not so fun that many were people near drowning. What was it with Hogwarts and not being able to swim? Bea always shook her head when she heard of another case.
At Sam's response to her question, Bea snorted, a full laugh leaving her lips. "Well, I mean, sure? I might not hate them, but I'm sure going to dislike them for giving me that ticket. Especially if they don't listen to why I'm speeding. What if my child is being born, or my mother is dying?" Something in her chest pinched at her last comment. Too close. Way too close. Her comment made her want to run up to her dorm and write a letter to Ma, to check if she was alright. It was something she'd been fighting ever since stepping onto the train back to Hogwarts. This itching feeling that something would happen again if she wasn't at home, making sure everyone was okay.
Bea grinned at Dee. "Yeah, sweet Sam. She's helping me out with my questions." A glance at Sam made her furrow her brows though. The other prefect was being abnormally cagey. Why? Looking between the two, Bea was trying to work it out and couldn't. Finally, she asked, "You alright there Sam? Did I say something?"

"Well, if you say something that definitely doesn't make it true," she replied as Dee winked at Bea. "It's not like you are the most trustworthy source of information." When Beatrice questioned if she was the wisest person, the brunette gasped loudly. "What?!" she let out as she placed her hands on her heart, acting like the other had broken her heart. "Are you questioning me, the smartest person in the universe?" After wiping away an imaginary tear from her face, the fake offended expression was replaced by a big grin.
Shaking her head at Dee's comment, Samantha replied: "You were the dueling captain, a year older and I was new to dueling. I did my best with what I knew at that time, everybody else was older than me!" A little nod was given in reply to Bea's question, as the third year didn't want to go into too much detail about losing her duel. As dueling captain, she didn't want her losses to haunt her. For a split second, an annoyed look appeared on Samantha's face when the name Adelaide was mentioned, she didn't like her co-captain. "You are going to do great in your duel. I am sure of it," she smiled softly.
As Dee continued talking, the desire to throw one of the potatoes in her face grew exponentially and the prefect had a hard time restraining herself from really doing it. The young girl had to remind herself how bad it would look if she threw food in Dee's face in front of Bea. If the new prefect hadn't been there, Dee would have already had a potato smashed in her face. "You-" she glared at the older girl. How dare she use that nickname! An impulsive decision was made as her hand moved closer to the small piece of potato left in her place. The small cut potato was picked up and flew threw the sky, closing the gap it had with Dee's face.
However, due to a slight hesitation, the potato flew off course and missed the older girl by just a few centimeters. Oh no... Samantha soon realized how bad this was. Not only did she try to throw food in her friend's face, but she also did it in front of a younger student, a prefect even. On top of that, she missed. There was no way Dee was going to let this slide, this would probably become the topic of the conversation for the next 10 minutes and Dee would remind her for the upcoming 10 years about this moment as well. Well, she couldn't do much now except own it. "Don't call me that, or the next potato will hit you in the face!"
She sensed that Dee was being sarcastic but didn't understand why at all. When Bea laughed as well, Samantha looked confused at the other two. Disliking a cop for doing their job seemed ridiculous to her, thus she didn't get the reactions at all. "What?" Her eyes narrowed under her frowned brows as she tried to figure out why Dee was being sarcastic. Her blue eyes, with which she so innocently looked at the world, turned to Bea. "Those are extremely rare cases and it isn't like the police are heartless. Also, I think it might be better to call an ambulance in that case." Despite being in the wizarding world for two years, Samantha's solutions for a lot of things were muggle related. It was the way she had lived for the first 11 years of her life and it came super natural to her.
A nervous giggle left her lips when Bea asked if she was okay. "It's just... interesting that you think I wouldn't give Dee detention."

A Good Thing is Never Prefect
One moment, Dee was nodding along with Bea's words, arms crossed and basically dripping satisfaction, the next she was gaping at her grandprefect in openmouthed betrayal. Well, perhaps it was just a little exaggerated... but not much. Truth was, although she'd had her reasons for stepping down, they surely hadn't been very wise. But she wasn't about to share that with either of them. "Et tu, Bea," she gasped. "Well then, go on, listen to Sam's 'wisdom'," the air quotes were audible, "see where it gets you. I hope you're not a fan of fun." At least not if that fun might be slightly crossing the confines of school rules.
She flicked away Sam's (very reasonable) objections to her narrative, and opened her mouth for a retort, grin on her face, but found herself interrupted by an... unexpected projectile. Surprised, she was a little slow to react, barely managing to lean out of the way in time, as something small and yellow flew past her face. Dee blinked. "Sam, did you just... throw a potato at me?" she asked, bemused. That seemed to be what had happened, but she still felt the urge to confirm, because... what?
Fortunately (or perhaps unfortunately for Sam), Dee's moment of being flabbergasted did not last very long, and there was a smile spreading on her face that spoke trouble immediately. Rarely did Dee look that smug. "Oh please, like you had the foresight to miss me on purpose." She nudged Bea in the side with an elbow. "Between us, she could probably use some practice on her aim. Isn't that right, Sammy?" She drew out the m sound, making it sound like she might be using Sam's hated nickname again, before stopping after the second syllable. "Or did you get distracted?" Dee's grin widened, blue eyes sparkling. "I know I'm pretty, there's no shame in it." She met Sam's eyes. They both knew this had just provided her with material for teasing for the next three years at least.
As would Sam's views on the police and how people reacted to being called out on rule infractions, and Dee snorted, before once again trying to turn it into a cough. "Right. Yes. Very rare." She winked at Bea. "Normal people just love being punished for breaking rules." But it was unlikely that Sam would believe her, anyway. She'd just have to learn for herself.
But then, Bea seemed to be a little naive about the world herself. Or at least about Sam. Dee raised an eyebrow at both of them, but just shook her head, resolving to steal another piece of potato off Sam's plate. One that was headed for her mouth this time rather than her forehead. She had, after all, abandoned the remains of her dinner to come over and chat with the two girls, and perhaps seduce a new prefect off the straight and narrow path that Sam was trying to lay out for her.

What- what was going on? All she'd come here for were answers to questions. Questions now that she thought about it, hadn't even really been asked. Instead, they were throwing potatoes at each other? Bea felt like she was at a tennis match, her head swiveling from Dee to Sam and back again. The potatoes were the last straw though. As much as she enjoyed teasing and having fun she wasn't about to get in between the girls and their love of wearing food. Especially when Sam couldn't even aim straight! Bea gave a soft snort of amusement as the mashed potato fell from Sam's utensil and landed quite unceremoniously not on it's intended target. Her eyes twinkled as she shifted her gaze to Dee, a laugh at the other girls jest coming out of her lungs. "Were you distracted Sam?" she asked. Bea continued, her tone on of light mockery. "You're a duelist. Surely your aim is better than that? I hope so for the next duels anyway."
As for her questions, Bea had a feeling this wasn't going to end well for her. Another time would be better suited, where there wasn't possible projectiles able to be hurled about. Standing up, she brushed herself off, checking that everything was in order. "As much as I enjoyed this chat of detentions and police, I'm going to head to bed. I don't think potatoes suit my hair quite well." She knew for a fact that Sam could aim true and so could Dee, but Beatrice did not want to have to climb back up all those stairs to the Common Room to wash her hair. She wasn't going to risk it tonight. She smiled slyly at Dee, before giving a sunny smile to Sam and departing the Great Hall, making sure to miss the mashed potatoes on the floor as she left the Ravenclaw bench.
As she started her ascent up to the Common Room for the night, Bea thought about the conversation that had happened. Although she hadn't asked nearly any of the questions floating around her head, probably due to the nerves of coming back from break and being expected to be settled into the role of Prefect, Bea thought it had gone well. Both the older girls had differing views and it had been useful and interesting to see that play out. Sam's was much more black and white than Dee's, whose was more grey. The question that sat on Beatrice's mind as she replayed the scene over- was she going to be black and white, or grey? Was she going to have Sam or Dee as her role model. Time would tell. She guessed the role would mold her as she progressed.
Bea has left the thread xD I'm sorry for taking so long to get this out.

The audible air quotes around wisdom rewarded Dee with a glare from Samantha. How dare the older girl question her wisdom. "You can have a lot of fun without breaking the rules!" she replied. The tone in her voice was just as sharp as her glare. "I am a lot of fun," the young girl added with a hair flip. "You are still friends with me and you had enough time to run, so I am fun enough for you too." Their friendship hadn't always been smooth sailing. The fight in Samantha's second year had broken their friendship for a long period. In the end, the two had managed to make up and forgive each other. Samantha was still a bit salty about the betrayal but she had realised she preferred having the other girl in her life when Dee had been in a coma.
Samantha, not usually the potato-throwing type, was a bit embarrassed at her actions but tried not to show it too much. Despite her best efforts, her red cheeks and awkward look betrayed her. "I did miss you on purpose!" she doubled down. Over the past years, she had become a better liar but she still sucked at it. "My aim is fine!" she protested as Dee tried to team up with Beatrice. The younger student joined the teasing, much to Samantha's dislike. "Like I said, I missed on purpose!" Maybe if she repeated it enough the others would believe her. "I will show you the next stage, my aim is fine."
"Well, if people don't want to be punished, they shouldn't break the rules." That was the way the world worked. "If people wouldn't get punished, the world would be chaos!" she shook her head. "Hey!!" Samantha shouted as she noticed that Dee stole another piece of potato off her plate. "That's my potato," she said protectively as she pointed her fork at the older girl. The food had already disappeared but Samantha wouldn't let it go that easily. "Next time I will spear your hand with my fork," she promised.
As Bea bid the others good night, a small grin formed on Samantha's face. "Whatever do you mean? I think potatoes would look great in your hair!" Turning to Dee, she continued: "I think we should give Bea a make-over while she is sleeping. We can use the rest of the potatoes for it!" After that she turned back to the younger girl, smiling innocently. "Sweet dreams, have a good beauty sleep!"
