Jaime glided through the corridor, past painting after painting. Most of the portraits paid her no notice, but a few seemed a bit scandalized. One, in particular, was especially upset when she passed by at full speed. Jaime didn't get a good look, but she figured it was some cranky old pureblood idealist. They were usually opposed to these kinds of "muggle" activities. With a scoff, Jaime sped faster.
Skateboarding was one of Jaime's favourite things, but she had to admit that it was something of an acquired taste. It had taken her months to learn, and even now she hadn't completely mastered it. There was always a new trick to learn, or a new move. Mostly she learned from observing, but that was because no one knew. When she'd first found the board in her family garage, she'd known immediately it used to be her brother's. From the graffiti 'z' for 'Zack' to the profanity and lewd stickers, it was just the kind of thing he'd love. But she'd taken it anyway, since she never saw him use it, and tried it out as soon as she could.
She had to do it at night, lest her parents caught her in the day and took the trick board from her. If they did, Zack would probably kill her. So, she practised in the dark, and over time, she grew to love that board. Or maybe just skateboarding in general, for she tossed the old piece of wood the next week and got her own, more simple version. It was a nice dark blue piece, nothing big or flashy.
And now, she was at Hogwarts, zooming through the halls on it. Jaime knew it was probably against some rule, but no one was around anyway. And if they came around? She would face the consequences, no biggie, and at least she'd have been able to roam free for a bit. Jaime couldn't give that up. It was her first chance to since she'd arrived at Hogwarts, especially with all the homework. Each day had been do this, then do that, and she'd felt so trapped.
But not anymore, not with the light of freedom on her face as she soared past it all. The ground was a bit bumpy, as it was made of bricks, but Jaime didn't mind. It added a certain thrill, a tremor to her usually smooth passing. But as she rounded the corner, she failed to notice a brick sticking up just a little too high. And by the time she did, it was too late, and she was crashing face first to the floor.
