It was a warm day, and I had found Ava. There was word of an errand taking place in the green houses, well just the first one. I had no idea what it was or what we had to do, but that didn’t matter. I just wanted to fix things with Ava. In fact, I wanted to be best friends with Ava. Ava was nice, and a good friend. But ever since she had talked about how she didn’t trust Dhapmirs. Which hurt me, because I was one.

We were not on good terms. We weren’t exactly avoiding each other, but we weren’t spending every second of Ava’s return together. Which kind of hurt me. I had missed Ava so bad when she was away at Saint Mungos, but now that she was back, it kind of sucked. Well, not kind of, it really sucked.

This errand could be my chance to fix things with her, I hoped. It wasn’t super likely that plants would fix everything with Ava, but it was possible. She didn’t really like plants, or maybe she did, but never told me.

When I saw Ava, I grabbed her arm. “Cmon.” I said in a gruff and grumpy voice. I didn’t mean to be grumpy, and it sort of surprised me, because with Ava I was normally soft and gentle to her. But I guess her stay away at St. Mungos had changed that too. Or maybe it was the almost murdering a mostly innocent boy. Who knows.

I continued to drag Ava to the greenhouse, and when we got there the doors to the first year greenhouse were wide open. Normally they were shut tight, which meant that we shouldn’t go in. But not today. They were wide open and I continued to drag Ava right in. The normal plants that were around had been moved. Actually, everything had been moved, stuck in places that they were out of the way.

Perched on top of the center table was an arrangement of different types of plants. They were all in five different colored pots which were red, yellow, blue, green, and lavender. I assumed that each pot had a different type of plant in them, because what else would the different colored pots be for? Decoration?

Next to each pot was a description, which I learned was for how to take care of the different types of plants. If you would have asked me before starting herbology, I would have told you that all plants needed was water and sun. But for some reason, that was not the case. Each plant liked a different amount of water and sunlight. Which I found weird, but whatever.

After reading all of the descriptions and looking at each plant, I made sure to check on Ava, especially to make sure she hadn’t randomly ran away from the greenhouse. I was glad she hadn’t, and noticed she was checking out the Zebra plants that I had decided against.

I circled my way back around the plants, and landed back at the Prayer plants. Their scientific name was Maranta leuconeura, but there was no way I would ever remember it. To me it looked like a random jumble of letters, but whatever.

It needed a lot of sun, and the ravenclaw dorm was just that. Sunny and fairly warm, and the plant would most likely thrive. It needed water that was warm and only needed to be watered once a week, which was easy for me. And if I forgot, it could make it to the next week.

I filled out the form on the paper that she wanted us to do, I guess to make sure the plant would be well taken care of.
Name of Student: Charlie Jacobsen
Type of Plant: Prayer Plant (Maranta leuconeura)
Plant Name: Ave
Care Plan: Keep it either by my bed or in the Ravenclaw common room.
When both Ava and I were done, we walked silently back up to the castle.
Charlie has left the thread.

Why did Ava find herself at the greenhouse in charge of taking care of a plant she now had to call her own? One word. Charlie. Why did Charlie find herself at the greenhouse taking care of a plant? Ava didn’t know, they weren’t on good terms and Charlie really didn’t confess things to her anymore. It was technically Ava’s fault that they weren’t on speaking terms, although she would never admit it. Everything she had wrote in her letters was true. She would never trust another race again. No matter how much Charlie said those blood sucking weirdos were safe.

“C’mon.” Charlie’s gruff nature surprised Ava. Charlie had always been soft towards her, but apparently not anymore. Ava didn’t understand. Why did Charlie like other races, especially vampires? What was to like about the other races. In her experience, they had always been mean. There was a difference between her and other races. She had a talent, but it wasn’t what she was. She was still human. Now other races, they weren’t human. Other races were something else. And Ava intended to keep her distance from nonhumans. She had only ever admitted that fact to Charlie, and that hadn’t gone over well so she did her best to not look repulsed when other races were near and keep her mouth shut.

The two sort of friends arrived at the greenhouse and were (at least Ava was, she couldn’t tell what Charlie was thinking) surprised at the mess. Pots of plants were everywhere, and the usually organized greenhouse was in disarray. The only organized part of the whole thing was the pots of soil sitting in groups, with notecards describing them. Ava knew without a doubt, she would want to get the easiest one to take care of. The only reason she was here was because she wanted to stick with Charlie, so when she saw a certain professor she was leaning towards bolting. Profesor McLoughlin. A quick memory came back to Ava. Confronting the professor and turning in charred homework, leading to her completely deserved humiliation from the quick thinking (and honest) professor. She couldn’t help but smile at the memory.

Ava walked towards each of the clusters of pots, each with a matching color. With a quick glance at each of the notecards, she knew what plant she would be taking care of. The zebra plant. It didn’t require a lot of water, only needed to be repotted each spring (it would probably be dead by then) and needed bright indirect sunlight. Didn’t the dungeons provide that? Pretty much, and if they didn’t she didn’t really care.

There was a notecard for Ava to fill out near the plant. She sighed, and stared at the lavender pot. It was soothing to see something calming in a world of craziness. Maybe taking care of the plant wouldn’t be so bad after all? She shook her head. She was only here because of Charlie, and she wasn’t enjoying it at all. Right? That’s what she wanted to think, but was that what she was thinking about? Probably not.

Ava had to fill out a notecard to receive the plant. Name: Ava Winchect. Easy enough. Type of plant: zebra plant. Some part of her wondered why it was called that, but the other part of her was still trying to hate the plant. Plant name: wait what! They had to name the plant? She could leave the spot blank, couldn’t she? She leaned over to see what others were putting on their notecards, and—sure enough—everyone was putting a plant name. If she had to name it, what would she call it? A bunch of stupid names popped into her mind. Bob. Sarah. Zebra-y. No, it should be meaningful. Charlie. That’s what she would name it, in honor of her (broken) friendship with Charlie. Care plan: she wasn’t sure what to put here. She quickly scrubbed down the note 'Keep it in my room. I don’t care that much." She quickly crossed out the last part. That wouldn’t go with the profesor. Keep it in my room. That would do.

When Ava and Charlie were done, they walked in silence back up to the castle. Ava wished she knew what her friend was thinking about, but it didn’t matter. Eventually, they would repair their friendship.

date: 4/22/23 | place: Herbology | #ba9826= Aurora(English) | Thoughts= Italics
Herbology was one of my favorite subjects. Well, maybe 3rd favorite. I still loved Charms, and sure, CoMC will always be at the top of my list, but I loved caring for plants, mostly muggle plants that don't do crazy stuff on their own(save Venus Flytraps)and just stayed still. Well, again, save Venus Flytraps.

My favorite plants were sunflowers, and you could say that I had a sort of green thumb for the plants I sometimes cared for(was that why I had all O's in Herbology?). So, when I learned about the new errand for taking care of plants, I jumped at the chance to exercise my green thumb or whatever you do, care for plants.

Entering the first greenhouse, I saw that there were more several people there. The greenhouse itself was quite messy, but that was alright. As long as there wasn't any pollen in here...I gave a loud sneeze into my t-shirt. Nope...my nightmare was beginning. I looked around the greenhouse, holding a tissue to my nose. There were different plants around the room.

All the plants were in color-coordinated pots. There were notecards and parchment by each pot. Luckily there weren't any big flowers or anything, or I would've been running out of their faster than you could say "Herbology". I sneezed again. I examined the different pots to see what plants were held inside. They all looked interesting, though one particular plant caught my eye.

The prayer plant, or Maranta leuconeura, was a plant I was already familiar with. My Nanny, more recognizable as my maternal grandmother, was somebody who kept a lot of plants in her house. However, her favorite was the prayer plant. When pollinated, the leaves folded into a sort of praying position. I always thought that was pretty cool.

I picked a blue pot, labeled as a Prayer Plant. The leaves were very nice and pretty, and also quite healthy, none of them looked brown or anything. I decided to fill out the parchment by it.

Name of Student: Aurora Griffith
Type of Plant: Prayer Plant(Or Maranta leuconeura if you want to get scientific)
Plant Name: Rhiannon
Care Plan: I'll keep it in my dorm room, and use a cup that'll be left by it each night to water it every week in the morning. Lucky for me, I have a calendar! I can circle "Water Rhiannon" every week(two weeks and I might forget). Since the common room is not in a place where sunlight can easily reach it, I'll take it by the windows every day in the afternoon, or outside, but not under direct sun. It won't be too hard to take care of this plant, since it's not exactly high maintenance!

I had decided to name the prayer plant Rhiannon because Rhiannon was the name of my dad's younger sister, my muggleborn aunt. Of course, I had never met her, and my dad hadn't seen her in who knows how many years, but I decided to name it after her, in her honor. I might call her Ann for short though, especially because no one will know who I'm talking about If I always call her Rhiannon.

I spied Rita, who I saw at pretty much every errand, and gave her a wave, even though she probably didn't see it. "Hi Rita!" I said, then sneezed, then I looked back to Rhiannon, or "Ann", and was determined to keep her alive as long as possible. At least this would be a breeze...I walked up to the Herbology professor, Professor McLoughlin, and handed in my care plan.

I already had two pets, but a 3rd one...now that was something else. But if I can survive this actual torture room of pollen, then surely I was unstoppable right now.

It was Saturday, April 22nd, the day after the Spring Court Ball.

A new errand was upon them but this time it was one he actually was looking forward to quite a lot.

Because he was going to a place he frequented all the time. Today, Kim was wearing a very simple outfit, one that worked well for this particular errand, as it would take place inside a greenhouse. He wore a pair of black slacks and a fashionable long-sleeved, loose-fitting white shirt. A pair of diamond earrings graced his earlobes, along with his usual diamond pride bracelet, and part of his hair was pulled up into a ponytail, although some bangs still fell into his eyes. It was more of a casual look that Kim portrayed this time around.

A yawn escaped his lips, as his sleep again hadn't been the best last night and Puffie nuzzled his shoulder.

It was almost as if Puffie was trying to reassure Kim that he wasn't alone. The purple haired teen reached up to affectionately pet Puffie, the puffball's presence making him feel a little better. Kim had brought his enchanted backpack with him this time in preparation for this errand. Earlier, he'd removed a lot from inside to make room for any plants or herbs that he might receive. After all, this was the new Herbology teacher. Kim had seen her give out small plants as welcoming gifts for the other professors on her first day....

Therefore, it stood to reason she might do the same for the students.

A pair of protective gloves and work gloves were placed inside the pack, just in case he might need them.

Both types of gloves were specifically designed for herbology work, so Kim was sure they could come in handy. Some other basic helpful items were also inside the pack. He approached greenhouse one, a place he felt very comfortable inside, and entered it to be met with the usual humid air. This type of temperature was not something he liked much, in fact his body hated this type of weather. It didn't do too well compared to others. However, Kim was very determined and strong-willed when it came to certain things he liked to do....

This was no exception. If the temperature inside greenhouses was the kind of temperature Kim couldn't handle, he'd just force himself to handle it until it didn't bother him anymore. You could teach your body to accept things if you put them through it often enough. Sure in the beginning, you might get sick and feel really shitty but eventually, things would start to change. That was how it had been for Kim. Now his body could handle this kind of temperature, all because of his love for herbs and plants, which loved greenhouses.

Go figure. Why couldn't they like colder temperatures?

Why did it have to be humid and hot temperatures? Kim sighed to himself and shook his head.

Once inside greenhouse one, Kim noticed something instantly about the place. All the first year plants and herbs were gone. The purple haired teen's brow furrowed, wondering if they were alright wherever they were. Being taken out of one place and placed in another, sometimes it might have an effect on them if not done right, or if some were temperamental. But Nancy was the new professor of Herbology, surely she knew this. She must have considered all the options to ensure the safety of the herbs and plants under her control.

At the center of the greenhouse were a variety of potted plants. Yup, exactly what he'd thought before. Kim's blue eyes swept over them. There were little notecards and parchment placed at each plant. He waited until there were almost no students around the area and then moved forward to take a look at all the plants on display on the table. All of them strike his fancy but he was especially drawn to the Lucky Bamboo. Not only was it an Asian one, but it was one he actually was familiar with back home. He had one of them in his room.

Before it was stolen by one of his cousins.

The mere thought made him scowl a little. It had been during Christmas time when the family had come.

Kim's expression cleared up though upon seeing the same type of plant before his eyes again. This was perfect! He could keep one inside his room at Hogwarts now! Picking up the piece of parchment beside the plant, Kim scribbled down the necessary information to make the plant his own. He'd already come up with a name for it too. The last one he'd named Tomo, which essentially meant 'friend', until Tomo had been stolen by one of his cousins. This one he'd be calling Aiko, Ai being 'love' and Ko being from the word 'child'.

Essentially, Aiko would mean 'the child I love', which was really lovely in a sense if you thought about it. Kim carefully picked up a potted Lucky Bamboo plant, after taking his time choosing which one it would be. Gently setting it into his backpack, he smiled and then picked up the parchment to take it over to Nancy. The purple haired teen handed it over to the older witch and inclined his head to her. "Thank you for Aiko. I'll take good care of her from now on. I'll see you soon!" Kim told her, knowing he'd see her again in the near future. After all, Herbology was his favorite class and he frequented the greenhouses quite often.

Why wouldn't he see her all the time?

Name of Student:
Kim Aoki (Sato)

Type of Plant:
Lucky Bamboo

Plant Name:
Aiko
Ai being love in Japanese and Ko being child in Japanese
The name means 'child I love' to Kim.

Care Plan:
I've had a Lucky Bamboo plant before. It's name was Tomo but it got stolen from me by a cousin. Lucky Bamboo require lots of sunlight but not direct sunlight, therefore I intend on placing Aiko on my nightstand next to my bed in my room. The location of the nightstand is near the window, so it will get a lot of sunlight but it isn't in a place where direct sunlight will hit it. I intend on giving it a new home in a vase with some pebbles, along with an inch of water. I will change the water once a week and will always use bottled water. The temperature in our room is usually between 65-80° F, which fits what Aiko needs.

After Nancy took the paper, Kim would leave the greenhouse with Aiko, his intention being to take care of her as soon as possible. He needed to get her set up in his room, so she could thrive.

Lisa was by absolutely no means here to get a pet. She was just here to see why everyone back at the common room kept talking about plants as pets. She had thought they all collectively got a concussion until someone told her the plants were at the greenhouse and well, while she thought half the plants would be dead come next season, she was a sucker for the greenhouse, with its beautiful greenery and calm atmosphere, hence why she was here.

She normally didn't like messy places, but the greenhouse pulled it off. She stopped halfway to the table in the middle of the table to admire the plants that had basically taken over the top by now. It was enchanting, they way something that started off so small and inconsequential grew into this.

She stopped her idiotic gaping to look at the plants on the center table. There were five colors of pots, each with little plants in them, and little notes and parchment paper placed next to them. The colors must be different types of plants.

She skimmed through the notes detailing the plants' type and their requirements. She wasn't used to taking care of plants, so she definitely needed something more 'beginner friendly', so to speak, with a decent amount of aesthetic value.

She stopped as she read the note for the lavender pot, a beautiful sprout peeking out of it. Zebra plant, it was a cute name and a beautiful plant. It seemed relatively easy to take care of too.
Reducio
-requires bright indirect sunlight
-water once every few weeks with room temperature water to keep soil moist
-fertilize in spring with water soluble flower fertilizer
-repot every spring

She hated sunlight with a passion (slight exaggeration, but not a lie). It was so... bright. Painfully so. Still doable though. She could deal with it for the plant. Wait, didn't she come here to look around so she could make fun of people? Why was she actually considering this? Maybe it was because the plant was enchanting. She didn't know what It was about it but she loved it.

After a long pause in which she contemplated all her life decisions and came dangerously close to running out the door and never coming back, she grabbed the parchment paper and started writing everything down. "I better take good care of the plant or I'm going to have to explain to the Professor just how stupid I can be sometimes. NOT a conversation I want to be having anytime soon, thank you very much. " Her furious muttering drew strange looks from the other people crowding around the table, whom she dutifully ignored.
Name of Student : Lisa Langley
Type of Plant : Zebra Plant
Plant Name : Ry, short for Ryiah
Care Plan : I'm going to keep it near a window with a curtain or a cover over it(the window) to fulfill Ry's need for direct sunlight. I am definitely going to be keeping reminders in my journal about the days to water the plant and when to repot it. I will be keeping some water soluble flower fertilizer in the dorms and I kinda want to paint the pot to better suit my aesthetic. Ooh, gardening gloves for when I need to repot and a hold on the bottom of the other to ensure that the plant doesn't get too much water. Can't forget those. Will be doing some research about how to better take care of her, but I can assure you I will do my best.
She picked up the cute (did she seriously just call a plant cute??) little succulent, and walked over to the Professor. Smiling at the lady, she offered up the parchment and with one hand, the pot and notepad tucked away in the other. "Hey Professor, the plants look awesome." She motioned to Ry. "Can I take this one with me?"

----Vale came from a family of strange, malicious behavior. But said behavior didn't boil down to anything smaller than a human. If one had the chance, they would possibly be surprised to see Vale taking a small stroll with her pet spider once in a while on her shoulder, outside before curfew was intacted for the night.

Despite already having a companion, Vale was eager to obtain a new one, even if it was less animated than the one she has already.

Vale's family were known to be potioneers and also herbologists. Though they may or may not be more known on the infamous side of history, but they were just that. The plants may not be ready to destroy Vale's enemies, but they were plants nonetheless.

When she heard about plants being given away, Vale decided it was something to peek her interest to.

She was on both her feet and hands, checking out the greenhouse once she was allowed in. It was the first greenhouse, she recalled. Her skills in herbology may have advanced, but it didn't mean she wasn't still eager to check out the old and familiar.

"Maybe in a few years, they'll let me keep one of the ones that bite people, Familia. I don't know if Maggie would like it too much though..." Vale spoke, mostly to a hidden creature between her braids. Many eyes only peeked out for a second before hurrying back into its wonderful hiding spot.

Almost immediately, Vale's interest was caught by an array of colors at a table in the middle of the greenhouse. Luckily for all, as her first instinct was to immediately touch anything that wasn't on said table. She stood up properly and wiped her hands clean of any debris.

The plants all had their own signature looks, and noticeable for it. If Vale had the time and even the approval, she'd have taken each one. But pleasantly enough, she knew better. She observed the plants, and turned her eyes-

"Colin! My body hiding partner in crime!" Vale chirped, turning her eyes back to the plants before herself. Hm, it was a tough choice, but eventually Vale ended up boiling the choice down to one plant.

"I never knew you were a plant person. They're not the best for food, you know." Vale picked up a notecard, rolling her eyes up to think properly about her choice. "Even if they are pretty looking and all." She immediately began writing, putting down her plant of choice:
Name of Student | Vale Ashwood
Type of Plant | Cast Iron Plant / Aspidistra elatior
Plant Name | "Chuma"
Care Plan | I would keep it in a pot that would allow it to drain liquid. I would also keep it from the sunlight. Though this would be quite easy given my dorm is always shrouded in darkness, along with my home itself. Watering it won't be much of a challenge; only way it would be easier to watering it is it finally voicing out a beg about getting water for its dry, crusty self. It will be given proper trimming of any brown/yellow leaves it dares to have. As for its fertilizer, it'll be gentle liquid, to which I can borrow from my family's home each break I am away from school in both summer and spring.
Vale finished her notecard with a feather pen and smiled proudly to herself. It wasn't like she didn't know how to tend to meager plants like this anyway, but the information on tending to them was appreciated nonetheless.

"Oh! And Hui Ming's-!" Vale paused for a moment as she hurried to recall vital information. "Erm, Miss Decipio! Dreadful to see you! I promise it's a lot harder for a plant to go missing on its own! Can't say the same thing about my dolls..."

Vale gripped one of her braids, rubbing it in between her index and thumb. "Have you lot been destroying your enemies as I hoped? Surely the courtyard can handle all the holes dugged up. It's been handling mine now!"

Linda heard a lot about that in greenhouse there are some plants that can be taken. It was interesting and unusual idea to have plant as a pet.

She likes plants a lot so she decided she will go to look at plants and probably even would take one. She went to the library to read more about plants and spent there almost whole day reading and making some notes.

She was keeping reading book after book and finally decided to go to the greenhouse. She came out of castle and went to the place where she could look at offered plants.

When she came in, she saw some plants with some pieces of paper close to them. That must be something like name and maybe care plan. She also noticed at the professor's desk was laying a parchment.

There were some students there, but none of them Linda knew and she didn't think about it much. She came here for a plant, not for friends.

She decided to look at each plant carefully before she would choose one of them. There were Fishbone Cactus, Cast Iron Plant, Lucky Bamboo, Prayer Plant and Zebra Plant. They all look nice but I like Lucky Bamboo and Prayer Plant more. What about their care plans?

Lucky Bamboo requirements:
Reducio
-requires bright indirect sunlight
-can be grown in moist soil or set in a vase propped on pebbles in an inch of water
-water with filtered or bottle water if grown in soil
-if grown in water, grow in bottled water and changed water every week
-keep in temperature between 65 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit

Prayer Plant requirements:
Reducio
-requires medium to bright indirect sunlight
-should water once every 1-2 weeks
-water using water that has been left out overnight
-Should not be let in an area under 60 degrees Fahrenheit

I guess I will choose Prayer Plant. I could put it in my dorm on the table close to my bed. It's time to write down notes about how to care about it and then go to fill a parchment.
Name of Student: Linda Ramirez
Type of Plant: Prayer Plant
Plant Name: Nuri
Care Plan: I will put it on the table in my dorm. This way it will get necessary indirect sunlight and required temperature. Also I am going to prepare water before I read before sleeping once every week or two if every one will be too much, and in the morning I will water Nuri before I will go out of the room.
She finished writing and looked at it again. That should be alright. I will care about it in a nice way.

Linda gave the parchment to the professor and went to choose Prayer Plant. She chose one that was in a good state, it had healthy leaves and looked really nice. Nuri, now it's this plant's name.

While she was looking at her new plant, she got interested when was last time it was watered so she would know when she has to water it. "Um... Professor, I have a question. When was the last time it was watered? So I know when to water it again.""Thank you, Professor."

Linda took her notes, quill and Nuri, saw that she took everything she had to take and went out. She was keeping looking at it again and again as she was falling in love with this lovely plant more and stronger. She decided to keep her notes with care plan close to the Prayer Plant so it's always in front of eyes and she could always make sure she's doing everything as it's needed.

Valarie had three cats at home, Dublin, Paris, and London. She also had Fred, another cat, at Hogwarts with her. Valarie had never had another pet besides cats, let alone a plant as a pet. Sure, her home had trees and flowers but she had never considered any of the wildlife to be her pets. When Valarie heard that other students were getting plants as pets she decided to join in with them. After all, how hard could it be to look after a plant? All it needs is some sunshine and water and you are all set to care for your new plant pet. Valarie opened the door to the green house and watched a few other students picking out plants. She wandered over to the plants and began to read about the plants. Their requirements all seemed to be similar: sunshine, water, habitat, and temperature. One plant caught Valarie’s eye from the moment she spotted it: The Cast Iron Plant. It seemed rather simple to care for and Valarie was not looking for anything that seemed to difficult to care for. Reading through all the information about the plants that had been provided, she was left with a few options: The Cast Iron Plant, and the Prayer Plant. Those two were definitely the easiest to care for and Valarie had little experience in the world of caring for plants.
“This is most definitely more difficult then it should be to chose a plant,” Valarie said out loud. She studied the Cast Iron plant and the Prayer plant over and over again until her eyes were tired from staring at the plants. Finally, Valarie had made up her mind. She decided to get a Prayer Plant as her plant pet. Valarie moved over to pick up a Prayer Plant before walking over to fill out the piece of parchment to write out what plant she was choosing.

Name of Student: Valarie Song
Type of Plant: The Prayer Plant
Plant Name: Willow
Care Plan: I will care for the Prayer Plant by placing it on a table in my dorm room where the plant can receive a medium amount of sunlight. I will leave water out every night for the plant to water every one to two weeks. Keeping it in my dorm room should allow the plant to stay above 60 degrees and should be alright staying there.

Valarie finished filling out the parchment but froze at the part where it asked for her plant’s name. She had to name the plant? Valarie thought that was rather ridiculous but sighed and chose the name Willow. She glanced at the plant, the newly christened Willow, and shrugged. The rest of her pets had names, why not give a plant a name. Valarie would definitely be writing to her mother later to tell her about Willow, the new member of the Song family. Her mother would love the fact that Valarie had a new pet. Her mother loved animals after all. Her father would probably think that calling a plant a pet was ridiculous and her sister, who Valarie inferred would not be adopting a pet to take care of, would laugh and shout how odd taking care of a plant let alone naming a plant was. Valarie picked up her new plant, Willow.
“Well, Willow, whether you like it or not, though I guess you don’t get much of a choice, you are now a part of the Song family and don’t you worry, I will do my best to care for you.” Valarie held her new plant tightly in her hands before walking over to the greenhouse door and opening it with her foot. She closed the door behind her and walked back up to the castle with Willow still firmly held in her hands. Valarie would figure out the best way to care for Willow as the small plant grew. Once Valarie was home for the summer, she would make sure Willow was comfortable with the other plants at the Song house. As Valarie walked, she decided that calling a plant a pet and naming it was not so ridiculous as she had previously thought it to be.

I’m sorry. Did I step on your moment?
To change the world it takes a little genius.
How on earth did you manage to turn a safety room into a not-so-safety room.

I walk down the hogwarts grounds holding my face towards the sky. It is bright and sunny and the sky is blue with the occasional cloud. I had heard the Herbology teacher was giving out plants as pets and I decided to give it a try. I have a cat named Pepper who is a sweetheart but I would like a plant as well. As a young child I would spend time in the garden with my Mum tending to flowers. True they are muggle plants so I have no idea what is in store for me. I near the green house and watch as the proffessor opens the doors and walks back in. I take my time walking in and I even spot Colin. I walk through the doors and the smell of the greenhouse floods my senses. The dirt and the smell of the greenery makes me hungery for home. Yes I know it is pathetic to miss my Mum but I really do.

I scan the room and see Red, Green, Yellow, Blue, and Lavender pots with plants in them. I recongize the prayer plant and grin. The leaves are a dark evergreen and in the middle of the leaves was a light green line. I think I will pick that one! I recongize the Lucky Bamboo plant because we used to grow them. I am genuinly suprised we are caring for normal everyday plants! The lucky Bamboo looks like thick light green asparagus. I walk over to the Lavender pot and read the title: "Zebra Plant". Cute! But I want the prayer plant. I walk over to the Lavender plants and examine all the plants. In the back middle there is a perfect one with no wilted leaves or anything. I grab that one and pick up the parchment and card next to it. It has been a rather long time so I examine the care card.

Nice it does not have to be watered very often! That is pretty convienent. My dorm is never under 60 degrees so that should be just fine! I get cold easily and apperently so does my little friend! Indirect sunlight should not be a problem I can just put it in shade on my window seal. Watering it with water left over night should not be an issue. I tend to forget about my cups of water so it sits there over night till I take my cup down to the great hall. This should be a piece of cake!

I examine the yellowish parchment and look at the questions. Easy enough I know my name! I pull out a pen from my back pocket and start filling it out but I stop at the plant name. Hmmm what should I name this little plant? A name comes to mind and I decide to name it Everdeen. Yes a fitting name for a beautiful plant! I finish filling out the parchment and pick up my little friend to take her home. I hand the parchment to the proffesor and smile at her as she takes it.

"Thank you for your generosity. I actually gardened as a young child and I plan to enroll in your class my third year!" I say cheerful. With that I walk out side leaning over Everdeen. I need to get her inside because she needs indirect sunlight. I run through the grounds nearly tripping several times and I make it to the school. Yes yes Everdeen will have a great home with me! I pray that Pepper doesn't try to eat my plant!

“Oh my stars am I late!” Nella cried as she looked at the time. Her long, white-blonde hair was pulled back into low pigtails with ties adorned with green ribbon bows with little stars on the tails. She herself was dressed in a blue plaid pinafore over a black blouse, and knee-high socks that had a gradation of navy to duck blue from knee to foot, with a vine and flower print in greens and reds. The look was finished with some sensible black able. In a hurry she grabbed her black leather satchel, made sure her usual stationary kit was inside, and slung it over her shoulder as she dashed out of the dorms and down the flights and flights of stairs from the Ravenclaw tower.

She eventually made it down to the first greenhouse, only a little out of breath. Taking a moment, she breathed deeply to get her breath back and gave herself a once over to make sure she didn’t look like a madwoman. Satisfied with her appearance and ability to breath she made her way to the green house doors and pushed them open just enough to slip inside. The inside of the greenhouse was an explosion of plants. It seemed like every nook and cranny held some kind of plant, and even some of the spaces between too! The air was warm and somewhat humid -to be expected in a greenhouse but not altogether pleasant either. Nella twirled the end of one pigtail around her finger absentmindedly as she looked around. There were more students than she expected, and they were all clustered around a table which was covered in pots and notecards, and the odd abandoned quill.

Nella made her way to the table, looking over the plants. They were all pretty, but there were two that caught her eye. The Prayer Plant in its blue pot and the Cast Iron Plant in its cheery butter yellow pot. She picked up the care instruction cards for each and looked them over. They would both work well in her dorm room, getting plenty of light, although the cast iron plant would probably do better with the position of her nightstand. She put the cards back on the table where she found them and stood looking at the two for a bit longer. She stood with one hand on her hip and the other toying with the end of her hair, her heterochromatic eyes darting from one to the other. The longer she looked at the Prayer Plant the less and less she liked the aesthetic of it, something about the shape of the leaves and how they arranged themselves on the plant. And whilst she wasn’t the biggest fan of the colour yellow the Cast Iron plant was definitely more her favourite to look at. She could always change the pot at another date.

“I choose you,” she said quietly to the cast iron plant as she picked it up. It had a cute geometric patterned pot and wasn’t too heavy. Bracing it on her hip she grabbed a care instruction card as well as a parchment form to fill out. She made her way to a relatively clear bench along the side of the greenhouse and put down her plant and parchment. Opening her satchel, she brought out her favourite quill – made from a ravens feather – and some green ink. It was earth day after all, so the green seemed appropriate for the occasion. Carefully she began to fill out the form.
Name of Student: Nella Brewer
Type of Plant: Cast Iron Plant
Plant Name: Kayano (after Kaya-no-hime kami of vegetation)
Care Plan: I will keep it in this pot, ensuring that I water from the dish at the bottom, rather than from the top of the pot so as not to compact the soil. I will keep it on my nightstand where it will be out of direct sunlight, but the Ravenclaw dorms are light enough as to still get plenty of natural light. I will make sure to check the soil every morning to ensure that it is still damp, and only water it when that is no longer the case. I will also make sure that I have a pair of scissors nearby for removing browning leaves when I see them, and make sure they are regularly sanitised. As for fertiliser, I can ask my mother to help me brew a light fertilising potion over the Christmas break to bring back and use to feed Kayano over the spring and summer to keep her in the best of health.
Satisfied that she had covered all the points she needed to for the notecard she picked up Kayano’s cheery yellow pot and carried the parchment and plant over to Professor Nancy, and her adorable ferret companion. “Thank you professor for organising all of this. Kayano is going to have a great life with me I promise!” Nella said enthusiastically, handing the parchment to the professor. Other students were still milling about as well so she quickly got out of the way, carefully carrying her new plant pet back to her dormitory.
