Valarie pushed the doors open to the library, one of her favorite places in the whole castle of Hogwarts. The library was fairly quiet that day, Valarie’s preference. She scanned the room before heading over to a shelf to scan titles of books. The would occasionally pull a book off and read the title before settling the book back between the others. She was beginning to be annoyed with herself. Why couldn’t she just pick out a book. She sighed and moved on to another shelf. She kept checking the books before she slammed the book back a lot more forcefully than she meant to. She walked over to a table and sat down. The table was empty except for a discarded book that she picked up and stared at. The cover was plain and the title was vague. She groaned and stood up quickly. She strolled over to a shelf and looked at the books again. She headed back over to a table with the same abandoned book she had found at the table. She set the book down on the table and pulled the cover open and started reading. She had barely been able to get through the first page before slamming the book shut and groaning loudly. Why couldn’t she just find a book?

───── It was a fairly peaceful day in Lilliana’s opinion, and she was in a lighter mood, for now, at least. The first year had decided to take a visit to the Library that day. She hadn’t gone to the place too many times— yet. She wasn’t the most fond of reading, though the few times she had gone to the Library, she had found a couple books that had caught her eye. So, the blond haired girl entered the open doors of the Library, and took in the tall columns of bookshelves stretching on farter than her eyes could track.

Other than the occasional loud whisper coming out of a corner, the place was moderately quiet. Perfect. Lilliana took a long look around, for the first few seconds just standing there, unmoving, just gazing at the space around her, assessing the Library mentally, before heading over to a shelf. Lilliana would look around, brushing her fingers lightly on the spines of the books. Except she couldn’t find a good one, this time. All of the interesting ones seemed to be higher than she could reach, which was quite frustrating. Why are the shelves even that high? Lilliana wondered, gazing up at the ceiling, where the last rows of book were.

Then she heard a groan. It looked like she wasn’t the only one having trouble finding a nice book. Lilliana averted her attention back to the shelves, her eyes working more intensely now, and cocking her head slightly to the right to examine the titles of the books. Still nothing interesting. She left the shelf to go look at another one, which hopefully held more captivating stories inside than the previous shelf.

She resumed her search, not finding much until towards the middle section where there were quite a few books that caught her eye. She bent down on one knee to examine the covers, and took a book off the shelf. That one’s interesting, Lilliana told herself, placing the book off the the side. She picked up another book, three to the left of the book she had just taken out. Oh, that one looks nice too! She took that book as well, flipping through the pages for a minute or two. Then she heard the noise again. A slam, followed by another groan.

This time Lilliana was curious. She stepped away from the bookshelf to look for the source. It was a Ravenclaw girl with curly brown hair, they looked slightly familiar, though Lilliana wasn’t sure if the two had an interaction yet. “Er… Are you alright?” Lilliana asked, walking up to the table where they were seated at. “I’m Lilliana by the way, have we met before? Your face kind of looks familiar.” Lilliana could tell she was in a brighter mood, she didn’t often talk a lot, and her mood wasn’t always as cheery as her voice had just sounded.

Valarie’s head shot up when she heard a voice behind her. She turned around and saw pale girl with blond hair. Valarie couldn’t help but wonder if she knew her from somewhere. She looked familiar but Valarie could not put her finger on why.
“What? Oh! Hi! Yes, I am alright. Just a bit frustrated that I cannot seem to find a book to read!” Valarie laughed but she was still annoyed with herself for not being able to pick out a book.
“I’m Valarie. First year Ravenclaw but you can call me Val. You do look familiar but I’m not sure if we’ve met before….” Valarie studied her for a clue as to what she knew her from but then it clicked.
“Oh! I know how I know you! You did the Polar Plunge that Ava Winchect did, right? I was the girl that was super nervous about it.” Valarie laughed, remembering how utterly terrified her was about jumping into a freezing cold lake in the middle of December. She shook her head, still laughing about the jump.
“Have you read this before? It seems interesting but I am not sure how I feel about it…. What do you think?” Valarie asked Liliana, holding up the book.

─────Lilliana stepped back slightly when the other girl’s head flew up all of the sudden. Alright, maybe she had startled them a bit. They looked back towards her, and Lilliana gave a brief, awkward wave at her to signalise she was the one that had just spoken, “That’s relatable,” Lilliana gave a short laugh back at them, her stance becoming taller in the slightest when the other girl confirmed her suspicions; Lilliana wasn’t the only one that was having trouble with finding a quality book in the abnormally large amount of bookshelves the Library contained.

“I’m Slytherin,” Lilliana chimed in response, “It’s nice to meet you, Val,” The blond haired girl said, winking. Lilliana then lurched into thought after Valarie continued, saying her face had indeed looked familiar… They could have just been acquaintances in the hall a while back? Or, were maybe next to each other in class? Partners in an assignment? Lilliana’s eyes scanned them up and down, biting her lip. She knew them from somewhere, that was for sure. But, they were more than halfway through the school year at this point. Who was she?

Valarie seemed to have figured it out first, recalling her from the Polar Plunge Event they had done a while back, around December, right? Oh, yes, she remembered it more clearly now. Her first rule break. The water was frigid, and rightfully so for it being the midst of winter! But, Lilliana had enjoyed the experience, and they had even managed to slither away without getting caught. “Oh, yeah!” Lilliana said, her face brimming with satisfaction after they figured it out, “I remember that,” She said, grinning.

Ava Winchect. She was the one that arranged the whole thing, wasn’t she? She had met them in October during class, Transfiguration. And Ava was in her house, she was pretty sure — “Wait, wasn’t she the one who nearly murdered another housemate?” Lilliana wondered aloud. The first year wasn’t quite sure what happened to them, News had traveled quickly, though there were many different variants of the story people had retold, and she wasn’t sure which was accurate at this point.

Shrugging it off, Lilliana brought herself back to the conversation, “Don’t worry, I was scared out of my wits too!” She gushed, “Do have to admit, jumping in was quite fun, actually!” Lilliana remarked. Exhilarating, definitely. She swum in the lake for a few minutes before her toes felt like they were going to fall off from the cold before making her way back inside, shivering.

Valarie then held her book up for Lilliana to examine, which she did, squinting her eyes and peering at the cover. It looked vaguely familiar, she recalled reading it before, in October, maybe? “Haven’t read that one in a while,” She said, pausing for a moment in thought, “Book wasn’t half bad, though!” Lilliana said, breaking out into a grin. “If you don’t think you like those…” Lilliana retreated back into the narrow passageway between a bookshelf, and retrieved the three books she had looked at earlier. “These ones are good too, haven’t yet read any, but looks interesting!” Lilliana said, hauling the books over and plopping them on the table.

Lilliana recalled the Polar Plunge as well. Valarie smiled as Lilliana talked her thoughts of jumping in. The conversation with Lilliana seemed to flow naturally. “Maybe I will give it a try,” Valarie said. She watched Lilliana turn and grab a stack of books to recommend. Valarie picked up one of the books and studied it. She opened it to the first page and instantly found herself absorbed in its words. For a moment, she seemed to have forgotten Lilliana was still there watching her.
“It definitely sounds good so far! I think I will get this one. Thank you for your help, Lilliana!” chirped Valarie happily as she held the book in her hands. She glanced at the mess of books strewn across the table.
“I will pick these up for you, my thank you for helping me find a book,” Valarie offered and gestured to the books. She placed her book down on a chair and hurriedly picked up the mess. She walked back over and picked up her book.
“I should probably get going now, but it was nice to meet- well, see you again! Maybe we will run into each other again in the future,” said Valarie with a smile. She felt bad leaving Lilliana already but she felt the need to curl up with her new book and read. Valarie smiled and managed a gentle wave to Lilliana before leaving.
