The Grounds, the place at Hogwarts that most reminded her of home. Even though it was quite cold and she had to wear her winter cloak, the Grounds were still as peaceful as ever. Red and yellow leaves covered the landscape, Daphne taking a seat by one of the groups of trees. She was watching the animals go by, or moreso looking for any. She laid her back against a tree and took a deep breath, thinking to herself. All the animals back at home were hibernating, from the chipmunks to the bears, they were nowhere to be found. Students were sort of the same, come Christmas they could migrate home...well, those that wanted to at least. "When winter comes in and starts to snow, animals need food and a place to go. Bears sleep tight in their den or cave. Squirrels gather nuts to hide and save. Birds fly south to the warmth and sun. Beavers stay in homes until winter is done." She reminisced aloud, after all she didn't see anyone around that could hear her. What other animals hibernated? Well not wolves, most including gray wolves remained active throughout all of winter. Winter was wolf season, well all seasons were wolf season. As Daphne thought about this, she didn't see that there was indeed a mouse scurrying around quietly in front of her, looking for some hidden seeds.

After spending most of the day studying, Colin decided that he needed to get outside for a while. So, chucking his books and school stuff back onto his bed, he headed straight for the common room door and the long corridors that led to freedom! Colin could run along the corridors and stairs with his eyes closed for the most part, for his bare feet knew where to go by feel. And they took him up all four hundred thirty two thousand eight hundred and ninety seven steps that led up from the deep and spider ridden dungeons and out into the world of light and air above!

"Whoa! Watch out lads!" he cried as he burst through the arched portal that led into the entrance hall where he ran smack into a couple of Gryffindorks too slow to move aside. "Whoops! Thanks for playing bowls with me lads!" Before they could even sort out what happened, Colin was out the door and running through the courtyard beyond!

For quite a while, Colin wandered along in the woods that bordered the great lake. He loved the sound of dried leaves crunching underfoot, and he laughed and hooted merrily just plowing through any leaf drifts he came across. Coming down to a sheltered cove of the lake, Colin's attention was drawn to a curious sight in the shallow water. A stone, it seemed! A bright blue stone. Colin stepped into the chilly water, it was only about shin deep, and pushed through until he came to where he had seen the stone. He bent down to pick it out of the water, and his hair flopped into the water too.

It was a rather pretty stone, he thought, as he got out of the water to find a place to examine the stone more closely. It was blue like the sky and had bands and swirls of white like clouds. It reminded him of someone --- Clair! She was his Eyes of Sky, the blue eyed girl that he loved most of all! He thought that this stone would make a lovely pendant for her, so he put it in his pocket to work on later.

For a while, he thought about Clair. She was such a cool girl, a fellow racer, smart and pretty! His heart swelled at the very thought of her. As he sat quietly under a tree, he heard some rustling sounds not too far away. Probably a mouse or something. Colin decided that he'd like to catch it. Would make a nice treat, right? he thought. So, keeping himself as quiet as possible, he focused on sorting out where the sound was actually coming from. He also heard something else that piqued his curiosity.

Not a mouse at all, but another kid! Sounded like a girl, but he didn't recognise her voice. He didn't catch all the words, but she said something that sounded almost like a poem. In fact, Colin became certain that it was a poem! She spoke of winter time and different kinds of animals! The rustling sound and the girl's voice came roughly from the same direction. As he stalked the wee beastie, he heard her mention quirrels and wolves, but also bears and --- beavers!? He'd heard of them, of course, but had never seen either!

Focusing again on the creature he was stalking, it suddenly broke from under the leaves and Colin leapt for it! A couple of bounds and a strong jump sent him through the air! "YEEEEP!" he cried out as he flopped onto his belly. He scrabbled around trying to catch the mousey, but it was quick! At last he got it and came crashing into a heap at the girl's feet.

A lot closer than he realised!

He looked up as the mouse struggled in his left hand. She must have been the girl who recited the poem. She was quite pretty! Colin's green eyes widened. She was blonde, wearing glasses and a fur lined cloak against the cold. "Have you ever seen bears or beavers? I mean --- I heard your poem!"

Colin realised that he probably looked a bit odd with his bare feet and damp hair full of leaves and twigs. And a mouse in his hand! He hoped the girl wasn't going to think he was eating the mouse! "Er. I mean --- hello?" Colin moaned inwardly. Well, this wasn't going to be the best introduction ever, was it!

What a cute mouse, thank goodness her cat, Alduin, wasn't here with her or he would've been eaten for sure. She wasn't afraid of rodents at all, while others saw them as disgusting or scary, she believed they were adorable. Especially with their big shiny black eyes and tiny paws. Daphne leaned forward and was about to pick up the mouse when a boy came springing literally out of nowhere. "EEEEEP!" She screamed, her heart skipping a few beats as she genuinely thought it was the end for her. Daphne pushed herself up against the tree that she was leaning against while shaking in fear.

Wait, he was a human. Well...was he a human? She had certainly never seen any human able to jump that high or far before without a spell. Daphne didn't respond to his initial question, just staring at the boy with wide eyes. She was genuinely a very sweet person who tried to give people the benefit of the doubt; and in this case she would've if he wasn't holding the mouse. It suddenly clicked in her mind, he was trying to eat it! She would point the quill right at him with the intention of using it to defend herself. "Stay back! Unhand the mouse or I'll...I'll use this quill on you!" He had mentioned her poem too, was he stalking her? Maybe he was from the Forbidden Forest! A feral child! "You don't know the power of this quill, it is...enchanted!" Daphne lied while beginning to sit up and lean towards him. "One touch and you'll explode!"

And indeed his introduction didn't go at all well! The golden haired girl squeaked! She tried to back away from Colin and ended up pressing her back into the tree she had been sitting under! She must be a fellow student, but she sure seemed frightened by what ought to be an ordinary chance meeting. In stead of saying hello in return or any other greeting at all, she lit right into Colin!

Unhand the mouse!? Colin wanted to say something snide, snarky even! But in stead of smirking he was so surprised by her aggression that his eyes flew open in surprise! Colin blinked stupidly. And then he --- dropped the mouse! As if he were a dog following his master's command! The mouse scurried away and Colin found himself scooting back a little bit himself. She seemed to be about his age, but just maybe she was a third year or something. Who knows what she would do to him!

What did she mean she'd use her quill on him!? That both fascinated and worried Colin. No one had ever threatened him with a quill before, but he did know there were many different kinds of quills and some did indeed have magical properties beyond their usual penchant for blobbing ink all over one's parchment.

Colin's lips rounded in a perfect O of shocked wonderment when the girl started pointing the quill at him, saying it was enchanted! "Ench --- what!?" She leaned in towards him inching her quill ever closer! Colin fell back onto his bottom and tried scoot away from the mad girl! "Explode!? Wha --- What do you mean I'll explode? What kind of quill is that anyway!?" She was almost on top of him, and at last Colin's wits managed to collect themselves enough for him to draw his wand!

"Easy now lass! I don't want to have to use this on you --- but I don't want to explode either!"
