A First Class Flight

Felix’s fondest memories from his school years consisted of Quidditch matches and practices, but he had a special place in his heart for Flying class. Naturally, they had taken all seven years of Flying at Hogwarts and had earned O’s in both the OWL and the NEWT, so they felt confident that they knew the material taught inside and out. That being said, he was still rather nervous about teaching his first class of first years— they tended to be on the more rambunctious side, still bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, not yet having the experience and maturity of the older years. Today’s class seemed to be just Slytherin, if he recalled correctly, so he chose to wear his sage green sweater for the occasion.
As the students approached the training grounds, they would find Felix reclined in his cushy green armchair, his feet propped up on the matching ottoman in front of the chair. This sight would become a familiar one throughout the year, as Felix preferred to sit when possible, whether it be in an armchair or on a broom. Leaning against his armchair were ten of the school brooms, as well as a much nicer-looking Moontrimmer. Each student was greeted with a warm smile and a cheerful “Hello!” but little else as he waited for all the students to arrive.
Once it appeared that most of the first years had been able to find their way to the class location, Felix slowly stood up and smiled warmly at the class around them. “Welcome to Flying class, friends! You may take a seat, as the first portion of class will be largely lecture. Today is a little about me, a little review, and hopefully a little bit of something new for you. Sounds good?” He paused, glancing around at the students to make sure they were following before continuing on.
“I am Professor Lin. My teammates on Puddlemere United liked to call me Lucky, as my name is Felix, but for you lot, Professor Lin will be just fine. My pronouns are he/they, and you may refer to me with either or both sets of pronouns. I was a Hufflepuff here at Hogwarts some fifty years ago before playing for Puddlemere United and then coaching for Pride of Portree… everything else about me, you can either ask or you’ll eventually learn later on. Enough of me, let’s talk Flying.”
Felix paused once more, before sitting up in their armchair and leaning forward, their elbows on their knees to better connect with their students. “I’m sure your previous professor has already covered this material earlier in the year, but I feel that it would be good to cover all our bases before we start something new. Can somebody tell me the three basic rules of Flying? One per person, please, just shout them out.”
"If lost, return to Bean."

The sheet of ebony hair was visible if you squinted from the Top of Hogwarts; it was Duvessa Ember walking off to her first flying lesson. She looked excited at the prospect of Flying, and of course, the lectures. It was a fascinating subject, something not to be studied but more learnt like horse riding.
So, armed with good intentions to make a good impression, the young first year made her way to the patch of grass where all flying lessons were learnt. Her uniform was in it's usual immaculate state, and determination was written all over her face. She was desperate to succeed.
Duvessa saw the professor propped up in a soft green armchair, looking much inviting. She smiled as she saw the Professor and called out.
"Good morning, Sir!" He greeted her with a nod and a cheerful hello. And, much to her excitement, ten school brooms rested on the class. It seemed that it would be an eventful lesson!
She waited patiently for several other students to come, her mind excited.
"Welcome to Flying class, friends! You may take a seat, as the first portion of class will be largely lecture. Today is a little about me, a little review, and hopefully a little bit of something new for you. Sounds good?" He said, and Duvessa nodded. Although she could hardly stop herself from sighing out loud, it seemed that today would be theory.
Professor Lin began to talk about himself. She listened with great interest, and surprised that he actually played for a team! That brought a new level of respect.
"I’m sure your previous professor has already covered this material earlier in the year, but I feel that it would be good to cover all our bases before we start something new. Can somebody tell me the three basic rules of Flying? One per person, please, just shout them out." He said, and Duvessa felt nervous. Was she meant to answer? As she sat closely to the Professor, it felt suddenly scary to talk in front of everyone. That didn't stop her from muttering the answer.
"One; you must be aware that there are no obstecales. Two; Respect other flyers. And three; Check your broom, make sure it is in fine condition." She lisped the answer quietly, talking more to herself.

A First Class Flight
Every class was different by all accounts. Each professor has their own way of owning their classroom, so to speak. Flying wasn't quite the same. There were no walls to confine them, desks to sit at, or any creature comforts that made up the typical class. Even the adaptive seating she had seen in muggle school didn't quite prepare her for the scene that awaited her when she joined her housemates on the training grounds.

Flying Class
There before a lineup of school-issued brooms was a green armchair she would have easily pictured in her common room. Sat atop it was who she expected to be, the new professor. A masculine appearing individual in an attire that gave off good vibes and an acceptance for her house. A sentiment that did not seem shared by all of the wizarding community. At least, so much she was learning since her train ride into the part of the country that housed the castle she attended school in.
With a dip of her chin she silently greeted him before chiming in with a happy "Hi!"
Flying was something she loved. Along with her need for speed, it had led her to apply to be on the broom racing team. Though she wasn't on officially, she was a reserve, and that was something. Carefully picking her seat not too far from the professor and close enough to a broom she sat in a criss-cross applesauce sort of way. She listened despite her strong itch to get into the air, committing his words to memory.
Professor Lin that rimed with Wind sort of, she bet he could fly like the wind that Mr Lin, or so she mentally told herself, noting the Moontrimmer with a sharp intake of breath that was nearly a whistle. She constantly researched brooms to save up for, which was certainly one of her dream ones, but she would never be able to afford it. Perhaps a Nimbus 1700 if she could get a permission slip...
Her mind had gotten away from her, and it was a young woman's low musings to is question that brought her back, to which Alora nodded in accordance.

┏ ┓-----A ttending flying was definitely made more interesting when news broke out that a new professor was taking over the class.
Naturally, Avery was attending lesson in his uniform but he had elected to doff the long black robe and fold it over his forearm, appearing to his classmates in his grey and green house sweater and his shirt and tie. Avery seemed his usual self when he entered into the lesson-space with a small nod which was first sent to the relaxed looking professor and then to a number of his housemates in the area. He could make out that Duvessa was there, so she was one of the recipients of his greeting; but he turned his attention elsewhere, very quickly.
He hadn’t properly met Duvessa, at this point, but he knew her from corridor whispers and occasional common-room or breakfast and dinner sightings. He didn’t have enough to formulate an opinion of her just yet, much like this new Professor; perhaps he would have time to figure them both out now...
Before the new Professor could speak, Avery was already sizing him up. How does he work, what did he enjoy, what annoyed him. – He covered much in his introduction, to which Avery’s brow arched high into his forehead; he was a professional quidditch player and coach? Perhaps what his brothers had said about some of the Professors was entirely wrong; perhaps quality could be found at Hogwarts. Though, Avery had to rein in that line of thought; Puddlemere United, Pride of Portree? It was something at least, but Avery would first have to see quality before he believed it.
”Well they’re no Falmouth Falcons, Professor.” He gave with a smirk, nodding at him in greeting. He didn’t mind being so direct and playful, as it had the intention of making himself known to the man. In Avery’s experience, there were few Professors that responded well, but Professor Lin struck a different chord; with his style, candour and attitude.
Eventually the Professor got to the lesson, and decided to start with the foundations. It was tedious, but a respectable position that he was in; Avery couldn’t imagine starting more than half-way through the academic year. Although the pale boy with dark eyes and dark air respected the position, he wouldn’t extend the suffering that was covering old content; due to his constant hunger for learning; and so he elected to help out and give an answer:
“Ensuring your broom is in acceptable condition before flight, Professor.” He said, plainly; as though to illustrate to the other students that this was obvious. His put-together candour could well be interpreted as if he was some kind of teacher’s pet.┗ ┛

A First Class Flight
Tues. March 14th, 2023 ┊--------------------A FIRST FOR EVERYTHING--------------┊ Grounds, FlyingCaoimhe had always been intrigued by flight, and upon hearing of a newly appointed professor, she eagerly anticipated being among the initial cohort of students to greet them.
After removing the weighty cloak during her travel to the grounds, she exchanged it for a lighter and more streamlined jacket in preparation for her inaugural flight. Caoimhe exhibited a susceptibility to the cold even in kinder temperatures, rendering her vulnerable to discomfort without adequate uniform coverage.
After departing from the castle, the girl proceeded towards a green recliner that was accompanied by a stack of brooms. A smile was directed towards the professor prior to Caoimhe approaching her best friend, Duvessa with a sincere smile. Caoimhe would exhibit a brief display of cordiality towards Alora and Avery, albeit uncertain as to whether Alora could be classified as a friend or even a casual acquaintance. Avery presented a complex and mysterious persona, and had much more digging before coming close to solving his perplexity.
Upon receiving Professor Lin's introduction, Essa and Avery promptly responded to his inquiry. Due to her limited understanding, Caoimhe was uncertain whether the inquiry was exhaustive or if there was additional information that had not been disclosed yet. In any case, Caoimhe remained indifferent and simply acknowledged the situation with an agreeing nod.

A First Class Flight
Thoughts | Speech
Mellani was excited for the flying lesson. From what she knew, it would be her first lesson with the new professor and Mellani had taken it as an opportunity to get to know the professor better. She entered the grounds a few minutes before the class was going to start and smiled a kind smile at the professor. "Good morning prfessor", she said before going to the far end of the grounds, choosing to sit at the back of the class. Mellani wasn't one who liked attention and she knew that sitting at the back of the class would probably keep the professor from asking her questions directly.
As the professor asked his first question to the class, Mellani wondered if she should answer but the held herself back, not sure if her answer would be correct according to the new professor. She saw another kid answer it and was glad the professor wasn't calling out names and asking only specific people to answer his question.
Mellani really hoped they'd be able to fly in this lesson and wouldn't just learn theory stuff. But if they had to learn theory, Mellani was ready for that too. She had a notebook and a quill in her hand, ready to note down anything that the professor had to say.
Really sorry for the late reply.

A First Class Flight
Ava wasn’t sure where she stood in her fellow snakes eyes. Could she even call them fellow? She stuck on the side of the group and did her best not to get in anyone’s way. Even if most were fine with her, she knew many of them still held grudges against her.
She didn’t plan on participating in the class. At all. She wasn’t going to volunteer to answer a question, nor demonstrate how to get on a broom. None of it. Now if she was called to answer the question, she had no idea what she would do. If she answered the question correct, she was drawing attention to herself. If she answered the question incorrectly, she was drawing attention to herself. If she didn’t answer the question at all, she was drawing attention to herself. There really was no good solution for her pickle. She would figure it out if it happened, she supposed.
Although she couldn’t wear her favorite outfit: hoodies and toned down colors, she still found a way to make the school robes work. She seemed to shrink in them, becoming just a figure instead of one of the most hated slytherins. She had her hair tied back simply, and no makeup on.
The teacher introduced himself and she payed little attention, knowing this information wouldn’t be of much valuable to her. When would she need to know this teachers nickname? Never, that was the answer. She couldn’t be bothered to learn about this professor given he would probably be dropping out at the end of the school year, as was the norm at this school. None of the professors stuck around for long.
Professor Lin asked a question and she flicked her eyes through the gathered slytherins, wondering which would be the one to speak. She heard a girl she recognized as Duvessa mutter something under her breath, but she didn’t catch what. It was Avery Leveret who spoke up, stating the rules simply. She couldn’t help but rule her eyes, knowing the boy who had answered was a teachers put and an entitles, stuck up brat. She had dueled him a few months prior, and te duel had been close.
Everyone who had heard of Avery knew he was a teachers pet and no-it-all, and if these snakes hadn’t heard yet, they would be learning during the extent of this class.
