At the entrance of the Forbidden Forest, a group of first-year students would be huddled together, exchanging rumors and gossip. “I heard a first-year explored the Forbidden Forest and never came back!” A Gryffindor first-year said, moving their head to catch a glimpse of the mysterious woods. “I heard there were spiders, large snakes, and Centaurs in the forest in the forest!” Another first-year added, looking to their friend with a serious tone. The chatter was growing so loud that even Jannette had to put her two knuts in. “Oh-oh! Oi heard dah t’ere were dark witches an wizards dah live in dah fores’ ‘n do evil t’ings!”1 Jannette exclaimed, hoping to fit in with the group of first years. In reality, Jannette didn’t know if what she said was true or not, but I mean it was probably true, right?

While the first years talked, the Forbidden Forest's presence was known throughout Hogwarts. The ominous sounds of the winds and crackling bustling through the large dark oak trees towering over any first-year. The place looked like something out of a nightmare, with horrors of large cobwebs, and leaves that block out any form of sunlight. The ground was damp, and covered with dead leaves, sharp vines, and dried-up muddy twigs. Even with the horrors, there was one thing for sure, no first-year dared to step one foot into the Forbidden Forest, but that was soon about to change.

Looking toward her side, Jannette noticed a Gryffindor Girl that she’s seen probably a million times before, Ying, or was it Yin…? Well, she’ll find out soon enough! As Jannette turned to ask for the Gryffindor girl's name, she stopped for a moment as if time froze. An idea hatched in Jannette’s apple-sized brain, and oh it was so devious. “OI, you –” Jannette says in a hushed tone, a sly grin appearing on her face as she'd nudge the first-year Gryffindor girl. “Yeah, oi’m talkin’ to you…”2 The Slytherin girl said in a mix of a matter-of-fact tone, her voice raised, “Wanna make uh bet Gryffindork gurl?”3 The Slytherin girl chuckled at her own joke, man that insult really never gets old for her… “Soooooo – wha’s it gonna be huh, you scaredy cat ooooorrr?”4 Eyes from the other first years would look at the two girls, as the attention would turn to Ying, waiting for her response.

Oh Merlin please help these two…

Ying had never been so close to the Forbidden Forest the sounds coming from it were wrapping around her like a mantle of enticing curiosity. It was the promise of danger, adventure and so much unrevealed things that kept tempting her to go and see it all with her own eyes. The wind blew enchantingly across the leafs and tall trees. The occasionally chant from mysterious creatures or the sound of hooves hitting the dump ground crashing the dead leafs and thin twigs in their path. Ying's imagination run through those sounds, thinking about what kind of creatures were passing her and the other first years' surroundings.

The girl with the silky ebony hair was sitting on one of the small, gray, time-polished stones. On her lap, she was holding an open chemistry study book. She had been neglecting her muggle studies for a while, it was time for her to try and catch up on those subjects or her parents would be disappointed at her. Besides, that was part of the deal, she would attend Hogwarts like her brother, but she couldn't disregard those important matters, "Nothing is conquered without sacrifices." so there was no other option but to be the best.

But at that time was not chemistry that was holding her attention. The small group of first years around her, were having the most peculiar, and in her opinion, ridiculous at some point, conversation about their theories of what lies beyond the imposing forest's oaken trees. Ying heard some with curiosity and other with a sting of concern. Not that she wasn't aware that the forest hides many dangers but knowing that and thinking about what is holding back those creatures to come and attack unprepared students gave her a different perspective to all of that.

“OI, you –” The brunette Slytherin girl with round glasses and a spiky attitude addressed Ying nudging on her. Ying took her eyes from the book's page she has been trying to focus on and set her dark brown eyes at the other first year girl, "What is it?" The Asian girl replied with a little dry tone of voice, she din't liked the way the girl had talked to her, not to mention she was now another distraction from her studies. “Wanna make uh bet Gryffindork gurl?” The brunette challenged her with a chuckle, like if she was being funny. Ying had to control herself not to roll her eyes at this, that joke was getting so old that she could almost smell the mildew in it. "What are you talking about?" The ivory-skinned girl asked, now having to admit that the girl caught her attention with that proposal. “Soooooo – wha’s it gonna be huh, you scaredy cat ooooorrr?”

Now...Ying had to admit the Slytherin girl was getting under her skin. If there was one thing that Ying wasn't was a coward and the last thing she would do was to give her back to an open challenge. "What do you have in mind?" She asked closing her book, her eyes locked on the other girl's stare with a glint of fiery fire behind her dark irises. "Beside to these surpassed and stale phrases?" Ying couldn't just leave without poking the girl back. With a soft smirk and a cheeky expression she waited for what the girl had to share.

With the Slytherin girl's grin so big, that it was honestly hexable, Jannette has always had a weird way of egging people on. Sure she was a little obnoxious in the way she handles situations, but that's just the Jannette way of doing things. Plus, in her defense, she was talking to a Gryffindor so at this point, anything Jannette would do is justifiable, right? And besides, teasing a Gryffindor with their arrogant attitudes toward bravery made them so easy to do stupid things. It's basically Slytherin code at this point!

"What do you have in mind? Beside to these surpassed and stale phrases?"

Once Ying closed her book, Jannette pulled her head back, furrowing a brow as that once shit-eating grin instantly turned to a frown. For some weird reason, she felt a strange sense of déjà vu, but that all ended once the Gryffindor girl used her grubby paws to prod her. "H-hey don' touch me! Now oi go'tah wash t'is!"1 She'd squawk before brushing the place where the girl poked her. What's this girl's problem?! Didn't this Gryffindork know that people have personal space?! Obviously, Jannette would never do this cause she has 'manners'! “Firs’ of all – moi phrases AREN’ stale…!”2 She whined in her typical privileged demeanor as a fresh shade of crimson fell upon her face with embarrassment. “‘N secondly, if oi wanted an opinion, I wouldah asked a house-elf!”3 Jannette quipped, her arms folded now as her body language showed that she seemed to be a little taken aback by Ying's comment. After her so-called ‘victory’ against Cynthia Beaufort, Jannette has gotten more haughty over the weeks, and with a new powerful spell, she learned from Colin, Flipendo – the Slytherin girl felt like she was on top of the world.

“Anywwwaaaaaays…” Jannette gives the most exaggerated eye roll ever, brushing off the comment, and the brunette continues. "Oi bet you t’ree chocolate frogs – no… FIVE chocolate frogs dah you can’t make it ten steps into the Forbidden Fores’ withou’ cryin’ all t'way back to yer dorm!”4 At first, Jannette would have challenged her to do just five steps, but after Ying called Jannette’s joke stale, she took that a little personally. “You don’ ‘ave t’do the bet if yah don’ want to,”5 She’d tease with a hint of Slytherin arrogance, the small circle of first-years around the two whispering among about what's about to go down. Jannette then leaned in closer to Ying, poking the girl back with each word she hissed and did the unthinkable, “Buuuuuttt I TRIPLE DRAGON DARE YOU t’do it!”6 Gasps rang out from the crowd of first-years at what Jannette just said. While for most first years, it was normal for them to do a dragon dare first, but skipping both a dragon dare and a double dragon dare and going right for a triple dragon dare?! Jannette truly was eviler than any dark wizard, as she’d basically betrayed all forms of proper first-year etiquette and norms at this point. Nothing good will come from any of this, and Jannette was all for it and with everything on the line, Ying had a decision to make.

Ying was looking at the Slytherin girl with a mix of curiosity and a teasing look, trying to read the other girl's mind through those green eyes behind her round glasses. The girl carried with her an air of who considers herself important and more than others, which somehow made Ying underestimate her and hope to expecting her to share an idea that went against the intellectual superiority that she was trying, too hard, to appear to have. The dark-haired girl, however, tried to control her own expression to remain curious and not to show how much she was under-looking at the Slytherin challenging her. The way she reacted to Ying poking her in the back only served to heighten her amusement further, What an effectuated thing! Ying thought scornfully, raising an eyebrow condescendingly towards Jannette with a smirk ruining her earlier efforts not to show how much she was underrating her.

Ying rolled her eyes when the other girl complained about her phrases not being stale, "Right!" She muttered looking at her side to hide her disagreement, but the girl's next words made her eyes snap in her direction, "You would ask an house-elf his opinion about your stale jokes?" She asked with amused disbelief, "Poor creature would be hurting themselves after having to lie so blatantly!" She mockingly said placing her elbow on the hard cover of her book, and resting her cheek in her closed hand. She was looking at Jannette with a small smile and a fake innocent expression. Ying deduced from that conversation and the girl's attitude that she must be one of those pure-blood children who grow up thinking they rule over all living creatures...what a sad thing to believe in!

After a few moments, the Slytherin girl continued to finally elaborate on the real reason she started the conversation in first place. Is she being serious right now? Ying thought incredulous with what she was hearing coming from the other girl's mouth. "Into the forest? The Forbidden Forest?" The Asian girl asked, not wanting to believe what her ears were picking up. Her stance completely changed, she was now much more straight her head slowly turning towards the entrance to the sea of tall trees and damp earth. The other group of students around them started to mutter to each other with a few giggles trying, and failing, to stifle their amusement. Ying's stare hardened upon them, with a daring expression spreading in her delicate features.

“You don’ ‘ave t’do the bet if yah don’ want to,” She heard the Slytherin saying at her side. Those words felt like poison to her, polluting her judgment. She felt an impulse to just stand and walk to the Forest without a second thought. But her rationality kicked in on time to make her keep sitting in there looking at the other girl with a stern gaze. "That's the most silly thing I've ever heard in my life! Why would I be crying for walking ten steps into the middle of oaken trees?" Ying asked trying to look daring and brave. To be full honest to herself, all her instincts were telling her to stay away from those woods, but ten steps...ten small steps! How dangerous could that be?

Ying sat back when she saw the other girl getting too close, her green eyes showing a glint she wasn't liking at all and her nosy nose getting too close to hers. She felt small twinges in her back when the brunette decided to nudge her, remarking the words that she was throwing at her, adding twigs to the fire that was already burning inside the Gryffindor's chest. "FINE!" Ying said with to much enthusiasm, standing from where she had been sitting and coming to face the other girl. Those around them quietened with some gasping and others just freezing in surprise. Okay...admittedly that could have been a little over the top...but honestly, the girl was getting into her skin with all that silliness and childish behavior. "Ten chocolate frogs," Ying started towards the girl, "One for each step..." She explained, "And I'll make it! For the sake of not having to hear you continue to say rubbish!" She stated reaching her hand towards the other girl, so she could shake it and they could close their deal. Some part of her was cringing, telling her that all of that was a stupid and impulsive idea, something just a total idiot would think about. But the other side of her, the one that was clearly blinding her judgment with pride, was hoping for the other girl to accept the proposed conditions of their bet, so she could give those damn small steps into a group of old trees and come back victoriously shoving in that girl's face that Gryffindors don't back down from a challenge and the next time she had another idea like that, the Slytherin girl would have to think twice before having to walk away in shame and accept her defeat.
