Beauty and the Books
Private to Rosie Parker
Elijah was, for the first time in a long time, cold.
Very cold. Incredibly cold. It was as if the wizarding community had suddenly discovered the magic of air conditioning and just couldn't get enough of it, so they decided to put it on full blast through the entire library, making everyone unbelievably cold. It was cruel, yes- it was likely some sort of medieval torture technique they'd thought to experiment with, and as much as he hated to admit it, it was working colossally well. The books, of course, required a slightly cooler temperature to retain the crispness of their pages, but this? This was too much.
Clad in a comfy, warm sweater the color of warm charcoal, he sat at a table in the library, shoulders hunched over his textbooks. Peeking out from under the collar of his sweater was the white collar of his uniform shirt, giving him the appearance of a prep-school child. Perched on his nose were a pair of pitch-black browline glasses, needing to be pushed back up his nose every few minutes. In a desperate, last-ditch effort to stay warm, he was also wearing his sister's bright pink fuzzy socks, although you'd only see those if you were looking under the table at his feet, for some reason.
The Slytherin student was trying to study, but the shivering wasn't exactly helping. He was a diligent child, and he would seize this Saturday morning to complete as much homework as he could- but these conditions were absolutely unbearable. With a small sigh, he shifted the textbook to the side, longing for a cup of tea to warm him up. It was a library, yes, which most likely meant no food or drinks. But here, he was in the working section of the library... surely, they would allow tea, at least. The vast majority of students were British! They had to allow tea.
If only there was someone he could ask... glancing around the library, peering through his glasses keenly, he searched for some figure of authority he could consult about this outrageous lack of tea. A small girl, shorter than him, caught his eye, and he searched through his memory to try and remember exactly where he had seen her before.
Ah, she was a prefect! That's right. She would know just exactly why this library was so cold, and if tea was allowed as a remedy. Pushing back his chair as he stood up and forgetting to tug his sneakers back on, he plodded silently across the library to the brown-haired, green-eyed Hufflepuff, bright pink socks carrying him across the room.
"Pardon?" His voice was quiet, meek, as he peered at the girl before him. His savior- hopefully. Hopefully, she wouldn't be the harbringer of bad news, dashing his hopes of a steaming mug of Earl Grey accompanying his quest for good grades. "I'm sorry, but do you know if the librarian allows tea in here whilst we study? I'm freezing to death, and I could really use a cup to warm myself up."

Beauty and the Books
For about the third time that day, Rosie was in the library.
For some reason, today was the day the world wanted to make the poor Hufflepuff prefect stressed out about her grades. And it's not like they were bad, in fact she had gotten O's so far, and had really only slacked in the beginning of her first year, but today Rosie was going into study mode overdrive. However, every time she went to the library, she'd forget something else. At this point, Rosie was so annoyed by her own forgetfulness, that she was starting to forget why she was even at the library in the first place.
But finally, after she had dropped off all of the books she needed onto a table, Rosie sat down with a sigh. Her small hands pulled her curly hair into a bun, so it wouldn't fall into her eyes, however a few strands fell out from her grasp. Rosie tucked her scarf around her neck, letting out a sigh. It was really cold. She glanced around at her surroundings. As usual, it was uneasily quiet.
Until Rosie laid her eyes on one boy, one of the only students in the library at the current moment. He looked troubled, and more noticeably, cold. Rosie didn't recognize him, she felt kinda nice about that these days, because that usually meant they were a first year. And Rosie was older! And cooler! Well maybe not cooler, there were probably a lot of first years who were cooler than her. But it just felt pretty sweet to be... older than a group.
She looked down at her notebook again, where she had taken some notes on Astronomy. Ah, zodiacs. Gorgeous. The whole history behind their constellations made Rosie pay more attention than she would in any other class. Not to mention Rosie's theories on Thurston were enough to keep her eyes peeled on his appearance. Who was this man? How old was he? He looked 16?? So many questions about someone she shouldn't care about.
While Rosie was thinking about Thurston's life, she didn't notice the boy coming up to her. She glanced up and smiled softly as a reflex. He asked about the librarian allowing tea, and if Rosie was being honest, she didn't even know if that was allowed. She pondered for a bit, before answering.
"No, I'm not sure, I'm sorry. I've never really tried, to be honest with you." She said, before standing and walking over to him. She had to gaze up at him, for he was taller than her, as usual. Rosie was usually the short one, despite being older. She took off her scarf, and rose on her toes, wrapping it around his neck. "Here, you can have it for a while. I know it's cold in here." She tucked it around his neck. "Hufflepuff have the comfiest scarfs." She whispered, quietly giggling. "But you didn't hear that from me."

Elijah's hopes and dreams sunk down into the bottoms of the pockets of his jeans as the prefect admitted to not knowing if tea was allowed. Sighing heavily, he tried to prevent the disappointment from reaching his face, only letting the corners of his mouth turn down slightly, his eyes cast down at the ground- or, more accurately, the table, and the notebook lying open on it.
A quickly as flipping a switch, his mental mindset flipped from emotional to analytical. Scanning the page with astonishing speed, he picked out the necessary details without any trouble. The name at the top of the notebook page named the girl as Rosie Parker, who seemed to be an avid lover of Astronomy, judging by the mass of words scribbled in her notes. Before he could glance further down the page, however, he was startled out of his analysis by a sudden warmth surrounding his neck and spreading throughout his chest. What on god's green earth was happening?
Elijah's mouth dropped open wordlessly in shock as he stared rather uncomfortably into the eyes of the girl winding a scarf around his neck. "You don't-" he stuttered, eyes widening to the size of basketballs. "You really didn't need to..." The incomprehensible noises of protest kept flowing out of his mouth as the tiny girl finished wrapping his neck with her soft scarf. He trailed off, however, as her statement was proven true.
The lovely warmth spreading through his upper body was comforting, and truly, he was slightly warmer. Thus, her bold claim was right- Hufflepuffs really did have remarkably comfy scarves. He smiled as she laughed, and to his complete and utter surprise, his smile was genuine, through and through.
"Thank you," he mumbled quietly, blushing slightly as he tucked the slightly-loose end of the borrowed scarf around his neck. How could this girl be so unassumingly selfless with her belongings? She was so willing to help someone else in need, so open to human contact, so sweet and kind... She was, in short, perfect. She was a saint.
He wanted to be her. She could teach him how to be genuine. She could be his saving grace.
Taking a deep breath, he thrust his hand out for a handshake. He nearly scared himself with how direct and jerking the motion was, what would the girl in front of him think? Oh, this boy was a mess... "I'm Elijah Huang," he said, trying his best to be assertive and friendly at the same time. Was that even possible? Well, she had done it- she could teach him. "You're... Rosie Parker, Hufflepuff prefect?"

When Rosie applied for prefect, she had a few thoughts in mind for what kind of prefect she wanted to be. Every single prefect she admired shared the same traits: Loyal, strong, and helpful. And Rosie wanted to be that when she was accepted into the position. She had already been working on becoming a better person as the years progressed, as she was faced with problem after problem after problem. In fact, after her bullying situation, she was worried she'd one day become as hurtful as a purist.
She was far from that, though, she knew that. Rosie could never fall down to that way of treating people. And from that point on, Rosie always walked on the path she chose that would better benefit her attitude and mood. It had worked, for the most part. The summer gave her a lot of confusion involving her sexuality, but the time she spent with her family and warmed her heart up to last for years.
With those memories in mind, Rosie always reminded herself of prefects and her family when it came to helping others. And it seemed to be Elijah's turn to be helped. Rosie really liked that scarf, but she liked a smile on someone else more than something that was easily replaceable. She glanced at him analyzing her book, and followed it more a moment, letting out a giggle. "My notes are a little messy, sorry." She smiled, turning back to him.
Rosie found his blush charming. Not many people did that around her, and it made her feel important, in some odd way. Like she was able to make someone's face heat up. It was kinda weird, but there were a lot of reasons of why Rosie was weird. But that was besides the point. She rubbed her nose and finally answered to his gratitude. "No problem, nobody should be cold." Rosie said, sticking up a thumb with a toothy grin.
"Elijah Huang, a pretty name." She complimented, shaking his hand. Rosie admired his excitement. It was rare she found someone like that she didn't already know. "And yep! That's my name." Rosie pointed proudly to her prefect badge. "And yes I am, prefect to the best house at your service. What house are you from?" Rosie asked, letting go of his hand and tilting her head when she questioned him. "It's really nice to meet you, though! Are you new here?"

Elijah's cheeks flushed as he realized that his inconspicuous glance at her writing might not have been as stealthy as he had originally hoped it to be. Thankfully, Rosie didn't seem to mind, and merely laughed it off with a simple ease and grace, her hair floating around her like a caramel-colored halo. "No, they're perfect," he murmured under his breath, in reference to her notes, although looking back upon it in hindsight, that was kind of a creepy thing to say.
As Rosie's hand touched his, a jolt of electricity shot up his arm and through his spine, warming him up further. His long, thin fingers encapsulated her delicate hand, and his cheeks felt crazily warm as she complimented his name. Nobody liked the Chinese names, and yet this girl did. Really, she was a saint- an angel from the skies above. He didn't mind the barrage of questions she fired at him, even though he was usually annoyed by interrogative questions.
The best house- yes, Hufflepuff was the best house, nevermind whatever preconceived connotations he had collected from author biases in his sister's textbooks. If this girl, someone who was just so obviously right with her place in the world, decided that Hufflepuffs should rule the world, he'd gladly back her up without any questions. It really was truly miraculous what the effects of someone else's happiness could have on such a melancholy soul.
His sister had once compared him to Jaques, from Shakespeare's writing, as well as subconsciously quoting Mean Girls at the same time, quipping, "You're too sad to function!" She was right, of course. Celestine was always right. Truly, his seriousness had inflicted some limits and restrictions on his life that wouldn't be there if he simply chose to be like Rosie. Of course, he also had to commend her wonderful comparison of him to Jaques- truly, there wasn't any other Shakespearean character that he loved as dearly.
"I'm a, uh," he stammered, trying to collect his thoughts, before casting his glance to the ground at his vividly-colored feet. Of course! When everything went wrong, blame it on the socks. "I'm a Slytherin, first year- so yes, I'm rather new. Obviously." God, his voice was annoying. How did she do it? How did she make her voice sound so cheery, so delightful? Clearing his throat, and before he could even stop to choose his words, he rambled on without rhyme nor reason.
"I mean, my sister- she's older -was here, she just graduated... two years ago, I think it was? She spoke of this place, of Hogwarts, like it was her home- I feel like I know so much of it already, just through her." With a gulp, he clamped his mouth shut, utterly embarrassed of the word vomit Rosie had just had to experience. What would she think of him now? Just a nervous, first-year mess... what an awful dilemma.

This boy really was a gem.
Rosie found it so surprising that he was a first year. Sure, she had never seen him around, so she had figured as much, but he just seemed so much older than her in every way possible. Maturity, height, stance. It's like their roles were switched. But alas, there Rosie stood, looking up at a shaking first year. He seemed nervous, though Rosie couldn't pick out why.
She smiled reassuringly as he stammered through his words. Rosie wasn't a big stutterer, only when she was upset or scared, so she couldn't fully understand. When he was done, Rosie was excited to ask more. There was so much about a person that another one could learn about, they were like books, and it seemed like Rosie was only on the prologue, if anything.
Finally, she began speaking again, her smile widening and her face flushing pink as she responded to Elijah's stammers. "Ooooh, I've never met a Slytherin before, I guess I haven't reached out as much as I thought." She giggled, shrugging. "Not that it's a bad thing, I like all the houses, I guess maybe people from that certain house don't like Hufflepuffs? A bold guess, really, but it feels like I've met so many people, and-" She stopped, and let out a quiet sigh. "I'm sorry, I talk way too much. I just get excited when I meet new people."
Rosie never had any brothers, or sisters, or really anyone in Hogwarts, since she was born into a muggle family. She didn't mind it at all, but it was kinda sad that she didn't have anyone at home to talk about being a wizard to. Rosie smiled a bit as he told her about his experience with her, until she responded. "I never had any wizard family, but I'm glad you did. A lot of people come into Hogwarts surprised and all that, but you were basically there. And.. she is kinda right." Rosie smiled warmly at her surroundings.
"It really is like home."

She hadn't met a Slytherin before? Why, they were practically crawling all over the place! It was practically impossible to have not met someone from any of the four houses, not when they had those co-ed classes together with other houses. Maybe she just didn't make any effort? But certainly, he would have to try his best to do his house proud, proving to Rosie that indeed, Slytherins were wonderful human beings.
"We like Hufflepuffs just fine!" he blurted out, his words choked with anger, in response to Rosie's musings. 哎呀,你这次真的搞砸了. He could feel his cheeks heating up again in embarrassment, and he sniffed indignantly, mad at himself for getting so fired up about the stereotype. "Hufflepuffs are wonderful," he amended, his tone of voice calming down. He could feel his face finally retreating to its normal color, for which he was grateful. Who wanted to constantly look like a tomato? "My sister always joked that a Slytherin and a Hufflepuff would take over the world together because they'd be such a formidable duo."
Wait. Was that weird to say? After all, he was a Slytherin, and she was a Hufflepuff... he banished the thought from his mind, however. They were mature enough to know what he meant- that Slytherins didn't necessarily hate Hufflepuffs. Even if he didn't know for sure if cooties existed, you could never be too careful. Better safe than sorry, as his sister always said.
Oh, please talking, the back of his mind pleaded. The more she spoke, the more he picked up on. Her tone of voice was light and cheery, like she hadn't a care in the world. Her posture was far more relaxed than his was, although to be fair, his was ramrod straight from years upon years of insistence from his mother. His shoulders were tense and creeping up towards his shoulders, giving off the impression that he was trying to become a rectangle by utilizing his shoulders; Rosie was comfortable with where she was, and her shoulders were relaxed.
Her smile as she agreed that indeed, Hogwarts was like a second home, was the sweetest thing Elijah had ever seen. He wanted to take a picture of that smile and tuck it away in his pocket, so he could pull it out and look at it whenever he felt sad. It was the smile of a goddess, radiating pure joy and sunlight.
How could someone so amazing be present here, in front of him? Truly, he was blessed by her presence.
Enough idolizing! He wasn't to idolize anyone, with the singular exception of his family. Shaking his head to clear the thoughts, he nodded in agreement with her words. "Really, I'm quite lucky my sister and I are so close," he said quietly, a small smile spreading across his face- a genuine one, at that. His sister was his best friend and mother all in one, there for him when his mother was away.
"Do you have siblings?" he asked conversationally, and making a bold move, he sat down at the table Rosie had been sitting at previously. His homework could wait until later- right now, he wanted to talk to this angel, this saint, this fricking perfect prefect.

Rosie initially winced at Elijah's tone, sinking back a bit. "I didn't mean it like that--" She groaned quietly. "Sorry." Though, when Elijah continued, she rose her head back up. Before giggling at what Elijah said about Hufflepuffs, and the duo with a Slytherin. "Ha, perhaps. I think Gryffindor and Hufflepuff make good power duos though.." She trailed off, thinking of her and Eris. Sometimes when they were together, Rosie felt invincible, like they completed each other. "Not that Slytherins don't make good duos, I was looking forward to grow close with one," he paused, before smiling bigger, "maybe we can grow closer, as well?"
After that, Rosie's face went bright red, realizing how bad it sounded. "N-Not like that, or anything, like... platonically." Rosie laughed off her embarrassment.
When Elijah asked about her siblings, it was like Rosie suddenly grabbed some energy. She hopped on the table and crossed her legs, sitting crisscross ontop. "I have a baby brother named Ben. I love him, like a lot. He throws up a lot though, which is annoying. But I think that's just a baby thing, ya know?" Rosie grinned, shrugging. "My.." She pursed her lips, hoping he wasn't a bad person about this kind of stuff. "My dads wanna adopt a kid soon, but Benny's still a baby, so they wanna wait until he's older. It'd be nice to have a sister."
She was interested in Elijah's family. This boy was sweet and an amazing listener, it made Rosie wanna learn more. "I wanna know more about you." Rosie commented, clapping her hands lightly and then patting the seat on the table next to her. "We can talk about our families for a while if you want, I know that's always a topic people wanna know here." She said, uncrossing her legs and instead dangling them off the table.
Rosie was still short, but she was definitely growing. She was about 4'7 now, and still going. She knew that girls were getting taller around this age, but she was still only twelve until April. With a shrug, she dismissed her thought for a later time. She was talking to Elijah right now.

Elijah chuckled under his breath, smiling at Rosie's small mistake. How good she was, to not make such a big fuss out of a small trip up. Filing the small observation away into a new file in the back of his head, he nodded, assenting to her comment. "Platonically. Of course." Under his breath, he added, "It would be my honor."
The way Rosie leapt up onto the table startled him, and he nearly fell over backward in his chair. The positive energy that encapsulated the word she spoke about her baby brother made his heart melt, and he just couldn't help but smile. If he was anything like his sister, Elijah was sure that Ben would turn out to be a lovely person.
Dads? Plural? He was sure that Celestine had mentioned things like that before, and it didn't really matter to him- not when there was the way grosser subject of marrying your mother or sister in Ancient China. No, he wasn't one to judge, not when it came to whom you chose to marry- but still, it was interesting. He'd never met a child of two men, nor two women; yet when you looked at Rosie, you wouldn't have been able to tell. Maybe love's imprint was invisible, in sight, smell, and surface appearance.
Maybe you just couldn't tell someone who to love.
"Adopting a kid..." Elijah said softly, shaking his head subtly. He couldn't imagine having another sibling- no, Celestine was enough for him. "Wow." He wanted to ask about her dads, and what it was like having two of them (imagine! double the dad jokes!), but he felt that it was impolite. He'd have to consult his mother in his next letter to her.
He reddened slightly at Rosie invitation to join her, and he slowly unfolded his thin frame from its tightly wound stance- arms crossed across his chest, hands tucked under his armpits, legs comfortably resting on top of one another. Gingerly, he sat down next to the Hufflepuff, as if he was afraid that she would spook if he made any sudden movements. She's a human, not a cat. Treat her like one.
"You?" he echoed, laughing a little at her words. "You want to know about me?" When was the last time anyone had said that to him? Everyone was so caught up in their own lives, in sharing whatever they could on the internet, and he'd forgotten that some people... that some people cared enough to ask about you. To ask how your day went. That there were people out there who truly cared.
Rosie wasn't one of those types of people who listened only to wait for the opening in which they could shove their voice into, who talked only to hear their own voice. It was a refreshing change, one that he relished and wanted to hold on to, even if that meant talking about himself to entertain her. "Families..." he mused, hating how he sounded like her echo. "I'm not sure there's much to talk about with my family. We're... I mean, I guess my parents are from China?"
Oh, well that was blatantly obvious. His last name was Huang, for crying out loud. How much more Chinese could you get than that? Maybe Li, but that was about it. His skin, his hair, and his eyes gave it all away, too. He was used to being the only kid with pitch-black hair at school, but he had hoped that there would be more diversity at Hogwarts.
He had thought wrong, unfortunately.
"We can take turns, then," he said suddenly, turning to meet Rosie's vibrantly emerald eyes, his own charcoal irises lighting up with an idea. "Asking each other questions, I mean- to sort of, get to know each other, I suppose?" Well, it had been a good idea in his head, but saying it out loud sort of took the magic away. "Sort of like Truth or Dare- but all Truths.
"You started, I guess, with that question about my family. So, my turn." Clearing his throat, he tried to think of a question quickly, as to not keep her waiting. "When... when is your birthday?"
Sometimes, you just have to play the role of a fool to fool the fool who thinks they're fooling you.

Beauty and the Books
Rosie felt a feeling of relief throughout her chest when Elijah didn't react negatively to the comments about her parents. The last time she had been talked to about her dads, it wasn't in a positive light. It's why she didn't talk about it at school. Sometimes kids were worse than adults, and adults could be pretty bad. She felt her cheeks grow warm as he watched him possibly think about a new addition to his family. He was a sweetheart, and didn't mind Rosie's excessive talking. It felt good.
She grinned widely when he came over to sit with her. It was a good step forward, which meant their friendship would probably get better, it felt like she was already comfortable with him. It could've been for a lot of reasons, it wasn't hard for Rosie to get comfortable around people. Even with Max, who she disliked for months, was easy to sit with now. She swung her legs off the table, moving her hand when he sat down with her.
"Is it so surprising?" Rosie asked, laughing. He seemed so shock that Rosie wanted to know about him. She found a lot of people interesting, why not ask about them? She folded her hands and shrugged."Of course I do, why wouldn't I? You already seem so interesting." She said, a bit of teasing in her voice. Maybe he was secretly a spy, or something. ... It was an odd thought, but anything was possible! Maybe once he stole a book from the forbidden section! Maybe, he wasn't as nice as she thought. It was a big mystery. Rosie hoped the last part wasn't true, though. She liked him. (Not like that, Rosie has standards when it comes to cooties. SMH.)
She had never been anywhere but London. Rosie had no idea about America, or any of the other countries her family sometimes spoke about. Her step-dad traveled a lot before meeting her dad, so sometimes he told her about America, and how messy it could be. Rosie didn't doubt him, it seemed to be chaotic from what he said. Maybe it was just because his step-dad over exaggerated, a lot.
"What's China like? If you've been there." She asked excitedly, before taking a breath. "Sorry, I just never get to hear about other places other than America!" Rosie realized how loud that was and covered her mouth for a moment, before quietly mumbling. "I forgot we're in a library," she whispered with a snicker.
Truth or Truth... Sounded interesting. Rosie had never really been in a game of Truth or Dare. It was a wild concept that she thought about when she was bored. She had heard some girls at her dance class talking about how they had their first kisses at Truth or Dare. Rosie wanted to vomit at the thought. She thought she'd rather eat some of her dad's burnt pasta than kiss a boy. Or a girl, for that matter. The closest affection that Rosie would get to at her age was cuddling, and she planned to keep it that way.
"Sounds good, why not? It's a good opportunity to bombard you with questions." She joked, tapping her finger tips together, before folding them in her lap and hanging one leg off the table. Rosie listened to his first question and smiled. "April 2nd, turning thirteen! What about you?" She asked, wanting to put it in her brain calendar.
Yes, brain calendar. Rosie had a name for it. Internal planner. Mental organizer. Some other smart words.
