Dear EmmaLee,

I hope this owl finds you doing well. I am sorry that our correspondence seems to have drifted off into the great abyss these past months, but I imagine your life there in Scotland has been as busy as mine has been here in the States. Ilvermorny had our keesters handed to us on a silver platter in the most embarrassing way during the first task of the Hexwizard Tournament, so instead of letting it get us all down (which it did, I'm not gonna lie about that), Miles has been running us through our paces to make certain we are all sharp and playing to our strengths this time around. Between that, classwork, and Broom racing, there just seem to be not enough hours in the day.

Don't get me wrong, I am not making excuses for myself. It is absolutely shameful that I let our friendship simmer on the back burner for too long, but I hope I did not wait so long that it has boiled down to nothing but vapor and a scalded pan. That would make me sad. Good pans are hard to come by! **ba rum pum**

Seriously though, if you are inclined to do so, write back. I would love to hear how your first year is going. Have you made any friends? What am I saying? Of course you have! You're EmmaLee LeDames! One most likely could not throw a cat without hitting one of your friends or one of your hundreds of suitors, no doubt. Tell me anything and/or everything.

I take it back. I made it sound above as if you have a choice in writing back. You do, actually, but if you choose not to, I am afraid I will be forced to hunt you down. You will not be surprised to know that my last Ball was a complete and utter failure. Taking a date was a HUGE mistake. I have learned my lesson this time around and am going stag. Or wait... what was it you called it last year? Being a 'single pringle'? Yeah, that or whatever. But I will seek you out for at least one dance. You still owe me for the one you promised me last fall. If you are going with someone, and it is serious, I may settle for a raincheck. If you are going with someone and it is not serious, he should be prepared to be tapped on the shoulder and relinquish his partner.

I promise to give her back. Maybe.

Type to you later,
Stephen

Dear Stephen,

It is so good to hear from you! I had meant to catch you before the other schools left, but could never seem to locate you again after the chess match was fully over. Then I meant to write to you as well, but as you state, studies and activities got in the way of me finding the time to properly sit down and write a letter. Although, I am definitely not as busy as one participating in the great Hexwizard tournament. Therefore, I apologize for not finding the time until now.

I was so sad that Ilvermory lost. Do you know what the next task will be, yet? Are you allowed to tell me? If not, I understand, but this whole event has been very exciting overall.

Ilverymorny was going to be my school instead of Hogwarts, so I am quite attached to it, but we moved to Glasgow when I was 10. I was so angry about the move that I exploded a boulder on the beach. Oof. I guess that wasn't a very lady like admission. Do not hold it against me, please, dear Stephen. I am not normally that short tempered. I just simply hate moving. The leaving everyone I care about to live in a different place makes me terribly sad and lonely. Letters just aren't the same as having the person right there to talk to.

As for our friendship and my care for you, I very much miss your jokes and puns. A true friendship can go years without speaking and come together again like they just talked yesterday. Let's say that we were just letting it simmer like a good stew, ready to indulge when the time was right. ; )

If I remember correctly from camp, you are in Wampus house at Ilvermorny, correct? I have a few friends there who are in their first year, but they are in Pukwudgie and Thunderbird, so you probably don't know them. My step-father was also in Thunderbird when he was in school, so I know everything there is to possibly know about that house, but not a whole lot about any of the other houses. What is Wampus like? Are your schoolmates as friendly as you are?

As I said before, first year classes are a little more trouble to keep up with than I anticipated, but I am getting along fine. I do not seem to have inherited my father's aptitude for potions at all. Haha. I'm not necessarily bad at it, I just don't have a lot of patience for it. I don't like to do it, so I rush to finish and make mistakes. How are your classes? Which ones are your favorites?

It is nice to know that you think I am so personable. Haha. I have gone to a few student gatherings and am very friendly with a lot of students, but I've only found a couple of really solid friends and no suitors to speak of. Which is fine by me. As I also said before, I am satisfied being a single pringle for now. Although some of the relationships that have cropped up around here are awfully entertaining, they also seem awfully dramatic as well.

That being said, please do not throw cats in Hogwarts, dear Stephen. I do not think they would like it very much. Flying is more suited to owls and ravens. **ba rum pum** Haha.

I also deeply apologize that I did not make it to the ball and missed our dance. I definitely owe you one or two now, regardless of future engagement. A promise for a dance is not to be taken lightly. I had not been sleeping well at the beginning of the year and ended up nodding off and completely slept through the whole, entire thing. I was so distraught that I couldn't even go down to see how it went or the pretty decorations before they cleaned up. I did hear about the whole fiasco and the scary doll fight. Did you see any of that? Apparently it was quite the terrifying to do.

It is sad to hear that it did not go well for you with that girl, but at least you found out pretty quickly that she was not the right person for you. I am glad you are joining us single pringles. If you would like to elaborate about what happened I am all ears... or ... eyes, rather, I suppose, or I will let you forget about the whole thing and we can move on to more enjoyable topics, like how good the food probably was, or how silly dashing Jaime looked in his Robin Hood costume.

You definitely need not hunt me down, as I am very easily findable and very willing to continue our correspondence much more frequently until you return to my school for the next task.

Awaiting your next letter eagerly,

Dear EmmaLee,

Please tell me, young Miss, how it is possible that we housed together for a whole month over the summer and you never mentioned that you had connections to Ilvermorny? Or at least not to me, you didn't. That's fantastic news! It gives us even more to talk about when I get to Scotland, though I imagine the Thunderbird perspective might be different than that of a Wampus, but likely small potatoes hopefully. Wampus is fine, but my circle of friends consist primarily of the Hexwizarding team and my broom racing team. Still, I wonder if I might know any of your friends, or at least recognize their names. Jamie and Louca are great, as you know - couldn't do without them here. Miles is great, too, but he is a much harder nut to crack. I am determined, however, that by the end of the Hexwizard Tournament, we shall be able to call each other friends.

And you blew up a boulder? That's awesome! Remind me not to get on your bad side, like, you know, EVER. My first instance of magic was a lot less dramatic. I had choked on a chicken nugget and once it had been dislodged, I was taken to the nurse's office. My throat was parched so I grabbed a pint of milk to drink along the way, but the thing just never seemed to empty. I probably drank a half gallon out of that pint. It was crazy. I don't come from magic, so I chalked it up, at the time, to a hallucination from lack of oxygen reaching my brain. Completely reasonable thought from a Muggle perspective. Ha!

I am sorry you are having a hard time with Potions. Maybe I can give you some pointers when I am there. I like all of my classes. School was never something I particularly struggled with, but my favorite class, by far, has got to be Transfiguration and then potions. Anything that resembles the hard sciences in the Muggle world is going to get my undivided attention. I haven't told many people this, but it was my dream, before being forced to enter Ilvermorny, to be an astronaut. It still is, but now I want to be the first wizard to apparate to the moon. I have been told in no uncertain terms that it is not possible, but bollocks to that I say! Flight was impossible for humans until the Wright brothers made it possible, so there you go. I simply intend to make the impossible possible.

Truthfully, in response to your questions about the next task in the Hexwizarding event, I'm not entirely certain whether I am allowed or not to speak on it, so I think silence shall be the better part of valor in this instance and I will, sadly, have to decline to respond to that particular query of yours. Suffice it to say that I feel confident Ilvermorny will make a much better showing this time around. It is really hard to imagine how we could do worse, so it is honestly a glass completely full situation as I look at it!

I need to wrap this up soon so I can meet Miles and the gang for practice, but I want to ask something. Since I had less than a stellar time at the Faerie Tale Ball, and you had no time at it whatsoever, I am going to propose that we go together and not as single pringles. It can be a casual date, but I do think it should be a date, and here is why. I would like to be in the presence of a pretty girl who is not rude and one whose time I can feel free to monopolize. :-) You, apparently, need a date so that it will have you set an alarm clock because you will have an obligation to meet, forcing you to be present. So, what do you say, EmmaLee? Care to accompany an astronaut wannabe to the Spring Court Ball? I will be a walking, breathing embodiment to the future and the distant past, in spirit anyway. How can you possibly turn that down? Well, you can, but don't. Please say yes. You may otherwise be surprised where I just might apparate to in order to get my way. ;-)

Anxious to read your "Yes!",
Stephen

EmmaLee gazed up hopefully as a bedraggled barn owl swooped through the Great Hall during breakfast and plopped a letter in front of her on the long Hufflepuff table. Her hope was immediately dashed as, for the fifth time, her eyes fell upon her own bright blue handwriting. She had been trying to send this same letter to Stephen for weeks now and each time the owl returned looking greatly disheveled. What was happening here?

The small girl pursed her lips in annoyance. Was there something in the way between here and the United States that was harming the owls? She had tried to send four different owls on the adventure and all had come back looking like they had gone through the wringer. She knew that it wasn't that it was too far and she was definitely allowed to send mail overseas. Her letters to her mother had been coming and going alright and the letters from her other Ilvermorny friends had arrived just fine. Though, come to think of it, she had been so preoccupied with getting this letter out that she hadn't responded to any of those letters. Miss Space Case made a mental note to reply to all the letters she needed to later on today before continuing her anxious pondering.

It was now two days before Ilvermorny would arrive and Stephen had not received his anxiously awaited response. She felt like a bad friend all around now, even though whatever was going on with her owls wasn't her fault. Finally, she sighed and pushed her plate away from herself, picked up the letter and headed downstairs towards her common and dorm room. She would simply have to meet Stephen when he arrived, give him the letter then, and explain herself. He would understand.... hopefully? Or maybe he would be so fed up with trying to communicate with girls that he would stop talking to her altogether? Mon dieu My god, what was she going to do.

Since you are so anxious to read it, I shall start with my "Yes!", I would very much enjoy going to the ball with you. Although, I do hope and believe that I do not need an alarm clock. I am sleeping much better than I was in October thanks to some dreamless sleep potion from Nurse Frogge and some advice from a fourth year Hufflepuff boy who helped me talk through my night mares. I fully believe I will be bright eyed and bushy tailed when the dancing time comes, and since I will be entirely at your disposal we shall dance the night away and engage in whatever other shenanigans the Hogwarts party planning team has, well, planned.

That being said, I am wondering about whether I should wear my fall ball dress or get a more springy ensemble. My fall dress probably will fit the theme, but I think maybe I should save it for the next Fall Ball or some other more nightly occasion. What do you think, dear Stephen? What are you planning on wearing?

I have much faith the Ilvermorny will turn things around promptly! It is very hard to chose between cheering for my current school and my heritage school so to speak. I really hope that they never end up going against each other or I will be at a complete stand still. Go Hogermorny! Ilverwarts? On the other hand, my mother and father attended Beauxbaton, so I am cheering for their school to be in third. Hehe. I would have gone there if my stepfather had not found my mother. <3

As for the unmentioning of my nonplacement at Ilvermorny, I do believe I stated it when I first arrived and then never brought it up again. Haha Maybe I meant to and forgot, but my friends are Kiernan Kennedy, Alura Stewart, and Grace Johnson. There is a wizard's only condo complex off of Broadway in New York that we all lived in a few years ago. They still live there, but yeah, I moved to Glasgow when we were 8. It is an old complex and Hogwarts reminds me of it a lot. It also had a lot of secrets and nooks and crannies to explore.

On that note, how are Jamie and Miles, by the way? I haven't heard from them either since we talked in the Great Hall. I had meant to catch up with them as well. I should send them a letter.

Concerning your never ending supply of milk, I think even I would have misled myself to believe I was just drinking it slower than I thought I was. Sometimes even now I think there is so much more in a drink than I expect. Haha. My first instance of magic in France was a lot less dramatic than my first instance in Scotland. Admittedly, I think I grew into my temper. My mother says that when I was a toddler, my father's ties would always be a different color when he would say good bye to me for the day. She says she was never sure whether it was me or not, but I seemed to be protesting him leaving by making him look unpresentable in neon polka dots or swamp green plaid.

Transfiguration is my favorite class, too! I'm thinking of pursuing it as a carrier. I think it isn't so much that I am /bad/ at potions, I just don't want to do it. It reminds me of my father and I struggle to do anything that reminds me of him. I think it's just a mental block I need to get over, maybe. Maybe I am just bad at it and making excuses.

That aside, I think it's amazing that you want to be an astronaut! I think I might be afraid to go into space. It seems very vast. It is very ambitious to apparate to the moon, but if anyone can figure out how to do it, you can. Impossible things happen every day. Also, if you can figure out how to apparate to them moon, other wizards could apparate anywhere on the planet they wanted to without worrying about distance. No more, skip apparating places or extended port keys. People could just apparate across the ocean themselves.

If I may ask without sounding rude, though, what about going to Ilvermorny is stopping you from becoming an astronaut? Can you not go to astronaut school after Ilvermorny? I am pretty sure that lots of wizards and witches have muggle jobs. Or maybe you could start wizards on space exploration for ourselves.

Please write soon! I can't wait for the ball!
