[quote]Just before Lucia had faced her boggart a little over a year ago, she'd tried to guess what it might be. Heights, she'd mused, or an influx of spiders or rats - or, in the worst-case scenario, the exposure of her Veela heritage. Well, the grave she'd seen that day must have been an omen of the horrors she'd experience in the coming year. Alexa's death had been the most painful thing Lucia had ever experienced, but the hurt had abated a little as time carried on. Now, Lucia was feeling a new sort of pain: the pain of a secret released into the wild, with the power to tear her life apart.
The moment she'd realised that there was no way she could keep up the facade anymore, Lucia had run, fleeing the scene like a murderer from a crime. Strangely, her first thought had not been of her mother or her sisters, but of her friend. Eun-ji. How many times had Lucia rehearsed this conversation in her head, in those naïve months when she thought she could control how her secret was set free? She didn't have that control any more. Gossip spread quickly throughout Hogwarts castle, and there was no denying it any more. Eun-ji would find out eventually, and then what? Would she accept Lucia for it? Would she feel betrayed? Would she be angry? As she ran, an image of Eun-ji finding out about Lucia's deception from somebody else forced itself into her mind. The phantom Ravenclaw's face crumpled, and Lucia suddenly knew that Eun-ji had to find out from her. No matter what the outcome was, Lucia at least owed it to her to come clean rather than letting someone else do it for her.
And that was the moment that Lucia realised where she was running to.
The Hogwarts ballroom was where Lucia and Eun-ji had first met, back in first year, back when dancing to Lucia was nothing more than twirling and pointing her toes. It was also often a place where Eun-ji could be found, and it was the place which Lucia's feet were carrying her towards. The great double doors were before her, and she pushed them open, and tumbled into the room. The doors slammed shut behind her, and for a moment there was only one word that Lucia could gasp out. Only one word seemed to matter. "Eun-ji-"

Eun-ji was in the ballroom again. She was here almost everyday since the new school year started. It was hard to sleep unless she tired herself out properly. She was not doing well. Occasionally she'd still feel a ghost of a touch against her neck despite the bruises being long gone. She rubbed the skin there absentmindedly as if to confirm it was indeed just her mind playing tricks on her. It was highly disconcerting but she knew she’d get over those feelings eventually. Eun-ji had been hurt before, it was just that this time it was done by someone, who was supposed to love her. She wondered what it was like for her grandpa? What was going on in that brain of his that not only made him forget his granddaughter but also made him hate her?
Dancing helped. When she was dancing, the Ravenclaw was too busy to think. It was even better when Lucia joined her. They started working on a new choreography this year. They still had a long way to go in order to perfect it but it was beautiful and something to focus on. Unfortunately, the Hufflepuff wasn’t here today. She had been doing her best but Eun-ji couldn't really ask her to keep up with her insane practice schedule. It was a lot even for her own standards. It was okay though. She was just waiting out the storm, once her emotions settled down a bit, she would slow down as well.
Just as that thought occurred to her, the ballroom door opened and closed with a bang. “Eun-ji-” It was just her name so how come it sounded so desperate? The young ballerina turned around to inspect her friend’s dishevelled appearance. She was still pretty of course. Lucia would always be pretty however it was clear how stressed she was at this very moment. So something is going on. The witch frowned, a thousand of alarm bells started going off inside her head. There was a familiar feeling of dread creeping up on her too…as if something horrible was about to happen. Eun-ji tried her best not to think about it too much. “Lucia, what’s wrong?” Her tone curious yet calm. She was worried but didn’t want to let it show. She found that people liked her calm. It made her look dependable and easier to talk to when it came to their own worries. She was also a good listener although her comforting skills were mediocre at best. She had not been comforted herself often enough to learn how to do so for others. Not that she wanted to that these days. There were very few people Eun-ji would listen and try to help but Lucia was definitely one of them and she told her as much before. If she needed help, she was here to listen. Lies!![]()

[quote]Eun-ji's voice prompted Lucia to take several deep breaths. She needed to be able to speak properly, to give her friend the explanation she deserved. To give her friend the truth. "It's - well - I -" In no imagined version of this scenario had Lucia been unable to get the words out, and yet here she was, choking on each syllable. "I'm gonna sit down..." she mumbled, sliding against the wall rather than find a chair. With her knees pulled up to her chest, Lucia could stare at her legs rather than look Eun-ji in the eye as she confessed. Was that cowardly? Maybe it was. Maybe it was cowardly to be telling Eun-ji this at all; so why did it feel like this was the hardest thing Lucia had ever done?
Best to start with context, Lucia decided, but just as quickly realised that she really didn't want to. She took a moment to compose herself, to work out what she was about to say, and then spoke. "Some stuff happened. I don't want to talk about it. You'll find out soon enough. But I have something to tell you." The Hufflepuff's voice still wavered, but was at least stronger than when she'd gone so far as to use the contraction 'gonna' a moment ago.
In the split second before Lucia opened her mouth again, time seemed to slow down. A million thoughts wrestled each other, consuming her consciousness. If - when - she said it, there would be no going back. Ebony would hate her. Briar would hate her. Willow would hate her. Lucia was going against everything she'd ever been taught, defying years of silence because of one ear-splitting scream. Would her family ever be able to forgive her for exposing their secret in a moment of weakness? Would Eun-ji ever be able to forgive her for lying for all the time they'd known each other? What could Lucia possibly say to make this easier?
One breath. Two. Three. And then Lucia pushed it out, these unfamiliar words that had been locked up deep inside her whole life. Once she began, the rest of them slipped out so smoothly, it was like they'd been in her throat all along. "I'm not a pureblood. I'm not even wizardborn, or half-blood, or muggleborn." Suddenly, a cough pushed out of Lucia's chest and Lucia felt a strange wetness on her cheek. Was she crying? When had she started crying? She reached up to wipe the tears away, smearing her makeup in the process. It didn't matter though. Lucia was beautiful with or without makeup, thanks to her accursed Veela genes. "I'm-" Unexpectedly, Lucia choked up again. With the effort that would usually be associated with running a marathon, she forced her next words out. "I'm part-Veela." And that was when she finally looked up at her friend's face.

“It's the people you love the most that say things that hurts you the most.” - #GoghTheStarryNight
Eun-ji didn’t rush her friend. She was worried but judging from her expression, she recognised that whatever the girl came here to say must be important. Sharing important things with other people was hard and she was honoured to be someone Lucia deemed worthy enough to come to her for help. “It's okay, take your time.” She said as she watched the girl sit down. She was okay with the fact that Lucia wouldn’t look at her too. Had the situation be reversed, she’d probably struggle too. “Mm-hmm.” Eun-ji hummed in soothing tone. If there were details Lucia didn’t want to share, she would not force her. The Ravenclaw could tell whatever came next wouldn’t be simple and she didn’t want to make her friend even more uncomfortable than she already was.
At last after much struggle, the secret was revealed and Eun-ji froze. “You are not a pure blood?” She repeated as if she hadn't heard anything past that point. Such was not the case of course, it’s just that this part struck her the most. “What the hell...” The witch chuckled. There was no semblance of humour in it though. This was just a manifestation of her utter disbelief. It might also very well be the first time Lucia heard her curse. It was not something she did often and when she did, it was usually said in Korean. Right now however, she simply didn't have the capacity to care. Why? Why did this have to happen? Did she betray her country in her previous life? Hasn’t she lost enough already? Eun-ji only had three close friends at this point and that would be Flash, Kim and Lucia. Was she really going to let her down as well? She was already ashamed when cut off Sam last year and they weren’t even that close. How could she do the same to the Hufflepuff? The girl has become her dear friend and out of the three she knew her the longest yet when Lucia let her walls down and there was a slightest chance of trouble, Eun-ji was about to take her to the highest place and push her off the cliff.
I got too comfortable. The Ravenclaw scolded herself bitterly. Kim and Lucia were purebloods so she never had to worry about them before. Flash, she knew, was someone she should have let go long time ago but selfishly refused to do so. She kept rationalizing that Hunts would never learn of his existence unless she told them, which she'd never do. However, they knew Lucia. They knew her very well by now and they knew the girls were close. If this information got out and reached them, there was no way her grandparents would just let it go. If she was lucky, they would simply tell her to stop associating with her if not….well she knew what they were capable of.
Eun-ji sighed, averting her gaze. “Well that’s…unfortunate.” She said coldly. Her whole demeanour changed in an instant. Her usual gentle approach was completely gone…just like that. Coward, her brain called her out without mercy. The witch kept making excuses for herself. This was to keep her friend safe, right? “So did you not know or have you been lying to me all this time?” She was being unfair...cruel even. Whatever the answer was, the Ravenclaw knew far too well Lucia never meant to hurt her. How dare she turn this against her when she was the one holding the dagger? Was Mrs. Hunt finally rubbing off on her? The woman would be so proud of her now. The very thought was enough to make Eun-ji feel sick. “No, scratch that. It doesn’t matter.” She shook her head, suddenly feeling extremely exhausted. “The main problem is that this would make my life rather difficult and I honestly can’t deal with that right now so if what you are saying is true then I think we should go our separate ways.” Eun-ji wouldn’t provide a reason why. She didn’t want to excuse her behaviour anymore. It would probably make it much easier for Lucia to let go as well. She’d rather have her angry than sad. “You can blame me if you want. I’m being selfish and making things easier for myself. It’s what I do now.” This wasn’t entirely true. It has been a long time since she made a decision that would make things less difficult for herself. This was anything but easy. It was excruciating. Lucia didn’t need to know that however. The girl was struggling with all this newfound information and she came to her friend for help just to be stabbed in the back instead.
To be fair, Eun-ji considered helping her at first but if she did so, it would be so much harder to push her away later. Staying by someone’s side through the hardest of times only brought you closer and the Hufflepuff could be pretty stubborn when she wanted to be. No, she could not waver now.

[quote]The moment Lucia saw Eun-ji's face, she knew it was pointless. It was as though the Ravenclaw had been hit by the full body-bind curse, she was so stiff. Lucia couldn't help but draw a contrast between the curse which spilled out of Eun-ji's lips now, and the smooth tone she'd spoken in just a second ago. Eun-ji had not broken down, as Lucia had been afraid of. No, she had done the opposite: she had made herself stronger. She has encased herself in ice that Lucia couldn't break through, and Lucia had a sinking feeling that she knew the reason.
There was silence for a moment before Eun-ji spoke again; a question this time. "I-" But Lucia was interrupted. Lucia didn't think she'd ever been interrupted by Eun-ji before. As she listened to what the older girl was saying, Lucia's heart sunk deeper and deeper into her chest. This would make my life rather difficult. Lucia was right. She must be. Eun-ji wasn't a pureblood, so she couldn't be worried about Lucia's blood status. It was her destructive abilities as a part-Veela which must be repelling Eun-ji, it had to be. What else could cause the girl Lucia had been friends with for almost three years to push her away like this? And yet. Despite everything pointing towards it, when the blow came, it managed to be a suprise. "S- separate ways?" Lucia echoed. For a second, she wondered if she was dreaming, if this was just another imagined scenario. But in no imaginary confrontation would Eun-ji be this... cold.
When Eun-ji finished, Lucia didn't say anything at first. She just sat there, numb, on the chilling floor of the ballroom, hugging her knees. Would this room be ruined for her after this encounter? It was one of the most beautiful places in Hogwarts, but its beauty seemed to be mocking Lucia now. What was the use of beauty if all it did was herald situations like this? There was just one thing that Lucia needed to say, needed to make sure that Eun-ji knew. "Eun-ji, I - I know what they say about part-Veelas. About us." That they were destructive. That they couldn't control their emotions. That they could twist those close to them around their little fingers. "But I want you to know that I would never hurt you. I wouldn't." Especially not in the way that you're hurting me.

There. There was that expression Eun-ji hated to see the most. She expected it would made an appearance after she proceeded to stomp on Lucia’s heart but knowing it would come didn’t make it any easier. It still made her stomach churn. The witch did not look away however. This was her punishment for all the harsh words she just said and for any that were yet to come out. The poor Hufflepuff looked so confused and lost. Hurt radiating from her whole body. It was almost unbearable but Eun-ji had to push through. Like she always did.
Lucia didn’t run away either. It was obvious she wanted to save the situation and their friendship. Eun-ji just hated that she sounded like she was the one in the wrong here. She didn’t need to explain herself. In Eun-ji’s eyes, the girl did nothing wrong. It didn’t actually matter to her whether she was pure blood or not and it didn’t matter that she was part Veela either. The other races never really bothered her and she had no bad experience with them. Besides, she knew Lucia would never hurt her. This went without saying and the Ravenclaw just wished the same could be said about her. If she was already destined to be no one remarkable, then at the very least, she wanted to be a good person. But now she couldn’t even do that. It felt really…unfair.
“Just let it go…you cannot change my mind on this one. You’ve done your best. Only, in this world, just doing your best isn't always good enough.” Eun-ji had experienced this times and times again so she knew the statement to be true. Still, she felt bad saying as much to the Hufflepuff. For some reason, she wished she could shelter Lucia and let her go on living her life completely worry free but it was apparent such thing was simply impossible. Hopefully time would make everything better. In any case, she needed to make peace with herself first. This would have been much easier if she had someone there to support her but as it was now, the Ravenclaw would only be a danger to her. For a moment, she considered explaining everything and letting Lucia decide whether she wanted to stick around but she quickly dismissed the thought. Her friend would probably say yes without really thinking about it. She couldn’t possibly understand the gravity of the situation without witnessing everything first hand. It was not just about her either. It could potentially affect her family as well and Eun-ji couldn’t have that on her conscience.

Lucia couldn't read Eun-ji any more. Well, it had always been hard to properly 'read' the Ravenclaw, but when you dance with somebody for long enough you start to pick up on certain aspects of their body language. But now, the only thing that Eun-ji's movements told Lucia was the same thing that Eun-ji's words were saying: that this was over. There would be no more dancing, not after this. Lucia had ruined everything.
You've done your best? Lucia almost wanted to laugh out loud. If she had done her best, she would have been able to keep up the facade, and Eun-ji would never have had to know about her Veela heritage. The eldest Fox of her generation would have carried on with the legacy of lies started by her mother and nobody would have been any the wiser. She would never have let this bad day get to her. She would never have started a fight in the corridors. She would never have screamed. And not a single person would have been able to uncover this deep, shameful secret.
And yet here Lucia was, trying not to sob on the chilling floor of the Hogwarts ballroom, knees tucked up to her chest, looking into the eyes of a stranger. "Maybe it never was good enough," Lucia whispered, probably in too low a voice for Eun-ji to hear. It was true, though. Lucia's actions weren't good enough. Lucia wasn't good enough. She was failing half of her classes. She hadn't won a duel since second year. She'd just betrayed the trust her family had placed in her. Let's face it, Lucia had been a mess ever since Alexa died, and this was just the latest chapter in a book entitled Lucia Fox Ruins Her Own Life.
Lucia forced herself to rise. Stumbling like a newborn foal, she steadied herself on the wall and moved her head towards Eun-ji. But she couldn't quite look the other girl in the eyes. "I'll just- I'll just go." Fingertips left the wall, and finally Lucia stood on her own. Truly on her own. There was nothing else for her here. Eun-ji was not here for her. This ballroom, too grand for a coward like Lucia, was not here for her. All Lucia could do was leave. Step by step, heartbeat by heartbeat, tear by tear.
She closed the door on her way out.Leaving to Will you catch me if I should fall?

Her friend was obviously doing her best not to cry. Eun-ji wouldn’t blame her if she did. The way she treated her definitely warranted some tears but she understood...The Hufflepuff probably wanted to keep some dignity. Had the situation be reversed, Eun-ji would have done the same. Still…it hurt to watch her. It hurt so much. Even though the girl didn’t cry, her pain was quite obvious and it shook the Ravenclaw to her very core. She’ll be okay. Eun-ji tried to convince herself once again. When she did a similar thing to Sam last year, the girl cried. She was positive, losing the older girl, whom she saw as mentor would have a huge impact on her life and she didn’t believe Eun-ji when she told her that would not be the case. And yet…Samantha found many friends, became her captain and even had a boyfriend. She looked quite happy now and the witch could only hope Lucia would eventually find her happiness too.
You are not that important. People just like to believe you are when they lose you suddenly. Her brain reminded her mercilessly. Soon the pain will pass and Lucia would see her as nothing more than a passing memory. Someone that once used to be part of her life. It was always like that. Turning away from the Hufflepuff, Eun-ji pretended to untie her shoes. She couldn’t watch Lucia stumble toward the exit. It was too much. “I'll just- I'll just go.” Neither of the girls looked the other in the eyes. One was too hurt to do so and the other was overwhelmed with guilt. That feeling wouldn’t show oh her face of course. She made sure to look unaffected. “Yes, that’s probably for the best.” She didn’t know what else to say. Couldn’t find the right word if such words even existed. I’m sorry. Don’t cry to much. I don’t deserve your tears.
