Birthday Finished

I mean, you can OWL if you'd have any reason to be here with him, but otherwise this is going to stay solo

Dinner time in the great hall was a grand affair, people were eating food and laughing with friends. The prefects were all at their tables. All but one. Kaegen Deathmote was off in a corner, holding a small pile of pancakes held together with a few toothpicks. So many thoughts were swirling about in his head. Too many, thoughts that were hard to make out. The most prevalent of all of these was a simple question. Why was he doing this? He had no need for birthdays, had no need for any of this. He was a hunter, a predator. He was Kaegen Deathmote, fens born scarf-wielder. Every year for his birthday he was given a hug. If it wasn’t for the hug, he would not have known how old he was. The hug was nice but it didn’t matter.

He didn’t have a birth date, or at least not one that he knew of. You could never really see the sunlight in the fens, only on rare occasions, if you climbed to the very top of a tree could you see some glimpse of the sun’s light, sometimes a twinkling of a few brave stars bright enough to fight through the upper layers of mist and fog. That combined with a utter lack of clocks, watches or any kind of timekeeping devices gave the boy a almost complete lack of a sense of time. And that included calendars and dates.

But he had seen a few other students celebrate their birthday, had even seen some people he knew celebrating. They looked so happy, so joyful. Two concepts utterly, utterly foreign to the prefect. He knew a little, just a little of what that felt like. He had felt that feeling before with his best friend, with his only friend. He had felt that before with Eris, felt that when she had accepted him back to her side, where he belonged. As confusing as that feeling had been, it had still made more sense than what he was feeling now. As the boy looked down at the little candle stuck in the center of his pancake birthday cake, he thought over just how confusingly infuriating some feelings could be.

And the irrationality of them boggled his mind. Why did he want to feel what they had felt so much, why did he want whatever magical spark they had bad enough to sit in a corner with a stack of pancakes, simply because they had the word cake in them? As little logical sense as it made, the feeling was still there, the desire existed and he didn’t know what to do with it, didn’t know what to do but accept it. In a small, quiet little broken tune the boy tried to emulate the happy birthday song he had heard. It sounded sadder to his ears than he had meant it to, but he probably hadn’t hummed the tune quite right.

The boy had never had a good ear for music, even though he heard it everywhere, tried as hard as he could to hum the songs he heard the fens sing to him, they always sounded wrong, broken. Off. But he had heard the birthday song once before, and had a passably decent memory. An extraordinary memory, if it was something important. And he thought this memory very important indeed. So he treasured it, tried to recreate it with this, his own little party. He had no one there with him, it hardly even occured to the boy that having friends there made a difference. As far as he could tell all you needed was a special occasion and a cake. Pancakes would work, wouldn’t they? The cake had to have a candle in it. He had to make a wish, then blow it out.

Pretty simple, right? The boy was about to blow out the candle when he stopped, stopped to think it through. This had to be perfect, he had to get it right the first time. So he started singing the song, this time with the words. With a horribly weak, soft little voice that didn’t sound whispery, a voice that wouldn’t remind anyone of rustling leaves. It was the voice of a little boy, a little boy utterly lost. A boy that had no idea where he was, what world he lived in.

“Happy birthday to me,

Happy birthday to meeeee….”

Late to dinner! I don’t believe it. Amanda was late for lots of things, like class or meetings, but she always liked to be on time for meals. Yet she was late. It’s only a few minutes, so it shouldn’t be a big deal. I hope that I get some food. I probably will, right? Amanda quickened her pace, determined to get her fair share of dinner.

Amanda burst through the Great Hall doors, avoiding the stares from fellow students. Her glasses were perched crookedly on her nose, her robes askew, and her hair all mussed up. There was only one seat left at the Ravenclaw table, and it just so happened to be right next to the boy she both hated and liked at the same time, Kaegen Deathmote. He was murmuring disjointedly to himself. No wait, he was singing. Singing the “Happy Birthday” song, in fact. Amanda felt a rush of compassion for him, sitting there all alone, quietly celebrating his birthday. She decided that she should at least keep him company, even if he thought that she was some sort of threat.

Amanda took a deep breath, adjusted her appearance, and took a seat next to the odd boy. She glanced over at his little birthday pancake. I wonder if he’s actually ever had a birthday party, let alone celebrated it. Amanda cleared her throat. “Hey,” she said softly, not wanting to startle Kaegen. “Is it your birthday?” She wasn’t sure what else to say, so she kept quiet.

In a way, she did him a favor. He had been feeling emotions, had been feeling weak and strange. Her presence changed that, changed everything. He only felt anger now, felt a boiling surging of anger, and flung the plate of pancakes to the side, along with all of the feelings he had been trying to sort out. This was not going to stand, it was not going to happen. It took him less than a second to leap to his feet, every motion smoother and faster than it should be, smoother and faster than a normal boy should have been. One more second and he was airborne, flying straight towards the girl with a wand in one hand and a knife in the other. With a swift movement he cast the spell, a hissed incantation breathing life to the magic.

“Fleependo”

With a bang, he was up, up, up in the air, 20 feet above the death witches head, and sailing behind her, scarf flapping silently, majestically, like a serpentine dragon of fog and mist. The knife was whipped, rather than thrown, from up and behind her, a strange angle that would be hard to block or deflect from. Not only that, but it would be difficult to even predict from where he was going to throw. If this panned out, another speck of evil would be no more. If it didn’t, then he was about to get a face full of death witch. But even as he was falling, that pang came back, that silent longing having ripped a tiny crack in his armor of rage, a crack large enough to make him doubt himself. So instead of waiting to see if the knife would hit it’s mark, instead of landing and fighting the death witch he cast the spell once again.

“Fleependo”

The first time, it had hurt a lot, but this time at least he tensed up at the right moment, breathed out at the right moment, making his core a kind of trampoline to reflect as much of the impact as possible. It still hurt, but not enough to deter the boy from using it. This time he sailed away, landing on a table in a fantastic crash of plates, serving dishes and cups before running for the exit as fast as his feet would allow.

Amanda started when the strange Prefect suddenly leapt away from the table. Or at least she thought that he leaped. She wasn’t quite sure. As she whipped around to follow Kaegen’s movement, she knocked a fork to the ground. Amanda bent to pick it up, and as she did, she heard a sharp thunk. She slowly turned around and came face-to-face with a knife embedded in the table, the handle still quivering. Amanda’s eyes widened and she let out a shaky breath. She was beginning to lose count of how many time Kaegen Deathmote had tried to harm her.

As Amanda turned back to where Kaegen had been, she glimpsed him running for the exit. She would not let him get away with it this time. She had two options: report his actions to the Headmaster, or chase after the odd boy and hope that the Headmaster had noticed the wild scene.

Of course, Amanda went for the second option. She burst away from the table, knocking dishes every which way, and ran as fast as she could. She lunged at Kaegen, tackling him to the floor. Amanda tried with all her might to keep him pinned to the ground. “What the hell do you think that you’re doing? Why are you trying to kill me? You know, my mother was right about you: you’re a reject. No one likes you. You want to know why? Because you keep trying to assassinate everyone!” Amanda yelled, tears forming at the corners of her eyes. She didn’t normally cry, but she was sick of the psycho half-vampire’s antics. She was sick of somebody attempting to murder her constantly. Amanda just wanted for people to like her, but apparently that was too much to ask.

A stumble. A stumble on the stone floor, followed by a headlong sprawl, a roll and a recovery didn’t take very much time. But that, coupled with the time it had taken him to regain his bearings, was enough time for the death witch to barely catch up and tackle him. 45 seconds didn’t seem like much when you were hunting, but if you lost that amount of time while running away, you might as well just give up. But he wasn’t going to give up, the girl had some heft, but nothing especially strong. She was something he could kill, something he would kill.

The girl started to scream at him, asking what he was doing and why he kept trying to kill her. As evil as she was, she would get her answer. And then he was going to escape, hopefully killing her in the process.

“I’m trying to escape, but killing you would be nice. I’m full aware what you are, and creatures like you should not be allowed to walk around. I don’t know your plan, why you came here or how you became this twisted. But I will survive. With my name. You say people hate me because I’m a reject?

The fens never rejected me, so that doesn’t make any sense. And I couldn’t care less what some people think.”

We'll rip and tear, for none shall cry
At your passing, on the day you die
If you mattered enough for us to care
We would, but to us you are naught but air

It was a small movement of the wand, a small wave directly underneath the girl’s throat, aimed directly upwards. It would kill, of that he had no doubt. The perfect spell to end the name wraith’s life and bring some vestiges of peace back to his own.

“Diffindo”

But nothing happened. The spell had failed. He would have used a knife, but the wand happened to be all he had on hand. If the girl tried to grab it, he in turn would pull away the wand and grab her hand, digging claw like fingernails into her skin.

Amanda began pounding Kaegen with her fists, but stopped suddenly when he spoke. “What do you mean by ‘you know what I am’?” Then she had a sudden realization. This boy thinks that I’m really some kind of monster. “Kaegen, just what exactly do you think that I am?” Amanda softened her grip a little, but kept a firm hold on the Prefect.

With a swift movement, the half-vampire’s wand was pointed directly at her throat. Amanda gulped. Her gaze met the wild eyes of the Ravenclaw boy. “You know, you should really stop trying to kill me. One day, Headmaster Blackurn’s going to find out and you’re going to be in a shit ton of trouble. You’ll see. They’ll probably expel you.” Amanda took a deep breath and remained calm. Losing her temper, like she did a few minutes ago, wouldn’t help anybody, least of all herself.

Nothing happened. That was not what Amanda had expected. Kaegen’s spell had failed. She wasn’t dead. I’m not dead! Amanda smirked. “Nice try, you little monster. I would hit you with a jinx or whatever, but I’m not actually trying to kill you or whatever, as you seem to think. And besides, I prefer physical combat.” And with that, Amanda sent her fist flying right into Kaegen’s nose.

Her questions flew right over the boy's head. He had a plan and was going to use it. Well. Instead of answering the girl and telling her what he though she was, he said a single word.

"up"

And began to float upwards with the death witch still on top of him. Tilting backwards just a bit, the boy shot off flying towards the exit, angling higher in an attempt to knock the death witch off of him using the top of the door frame. It was a simple plan, but a brilliant one. It wasn't like she could fly after him, anyway. To any onlookers it did in fact appear as if the maniacal prefect had suddenly learned how to levitate himself.

However, this was not the case. Strapped to his back, there was a broom disguised as a rather large umbrella. It was a simple trick, nothing especially confusing. But that didn't matter. It worked, and no one would suspect it. It was a weird umbrella, he had a weird scarf why not the umbrella? And in cases like this, it shined.

If she tried to veer him off course, he would compensate, steering her face into the door sill and then zooming away to freedom. This was going to work.

Unless you find a way out of that, second attempt to leave thread.

“Up?” Amanda only had a few seconds to be confused before she was jerked up into the air. A small yelp escaped her mouth as she was whisked through the air and towards the exit. “What are you doing, you maniac?! How are you even flying? You’re crazy. You’re without a doubt completely insane.” Then it hit her what Kaegen was up to. Oh my God. He’s going to try to knock me off. “Kaegen, no! What are you, fricking possessed or something?”Amanda gripped on tighter to the half-vampire as they careened right towards the doorframe.

She slammed headfirst into the wall and began to fall. The doors were very tall so it was a long way to the ground. With one last desperate attempt, Amanda reached out tried to grab Kaegen’s ankle, but harmlessly slapped it instead as she fell to the ground.

Amanda fell down hard onto the cold floor and winced in pain. The room was spinning. She felt rather doozy and she could feel a headache beginning to form. She reached up to put her hands against her head. Oh no, not another head injury. If I make it alive through this school year I’ll be very surprised. Amanda then slumped against the floor, passing out thanks to the actions of Kaegen Deathmote for the second time that month.
