Seconds, ticking on into minutes...passing on into hours, then days, weeks... a month. It was rather peculiar that not one letter had been sent from home. Even last year she got a letter a month, sometimes 2, just to see how she was doing, give updates on what was going on back home... and to say, 'I love you'.

Surely there was a reason. Perhaps her parents owl was attacked during it's flight! Or maybe it got confused and is still flying to the other side of the world!

Well what ever the reason was, Monica couldn't help but feel a little... forgotten by her family. Moving away from home was hard enough, but sometimes Monica felt as though it was a weight off her parents shoulders... rather than a burden of missing and wishing she could be home. Monica sat, the end of lectures slowly coming to a close, all she wanted to do was to forget her worries, to walk them out of her mind.

When the final minute ticked away, and everyone around her stood up, flooding the halls to retire their books for the night, Monica remained in her seat, just for a moment longer, waiting for the rush to end... and a clear path for her own exit of class. Venturing out to the halls, the onslaught of voices faded from Monica's ears, she heard every word, though her mind didn't allow her to process what was being said. If some one would have called out her name, she may have missed it. Her only focus was getting some much needed fresh air, just for a moment.

Finding her way to the main castle doors, Monica braced the crisp October air. though the snow was scarce, the wind still carried a bite to it. Luckily the school robe was just enough warmth, so Monica didn't bother to grab a coat. She walked through the courtyard, slowly making her way towards the Grounds. The grass broke under her steps. She could hear the crunching, it was calming, and she found herself taking 2 steps forward, and one back, hardly walking at all, but it brought her comfort... the one thing she seemed to be lacking at the moment.

Time passed by, and Monica continued her walk, till she came across a familiar sight... a book, but not just any book, Carrie! A muggle story, and one of Monica's favourite to note. Monica halted her stroll, her eyes fixated on the cover, a smile grew across her face, this book was the first book she read on her own. It was a book given to her by her sister. The page turned, and suddenly Monica realized that not only was she staring at the novel, but inadvertently at the person READING the novel... it was an adult... the Caretaker of Hogwarts, Ms.. Greer. Monica stood, unsure if she was even been caught staring... not wanting to get in trouble, or seem like a fool, she turned on her heels to leave the grounds.

Finley Greer practically lived outside. Rain, shine, snow, wind, none of it mattered. She often rushed to get her to-do list for the day done as quickly as possible so that she'd be able to spend some peaceful (student-free) moments outdoors. This didn't happen often, as it seemed the task list grew every time Finley blinked, but today was one of those beautiful exceptions.

For a few glorious minutes, Finley sat under one of the trees of the (empty!) castle grounds with her latest read, "Carrie". It was a re-read, and a frequent one at that, but the caretaker was a sucker for thriller and suspense, especially in October. The time didn't last long, though, and soon the sound of loud children getting out of their final classes for the day pierced through Fin's moment of calm. Just finish the chapter, she thought to herself as she tried to drown out the din.

Finishing the chapter took longer than expected, but finish the chapter she did. She turned the page, dog-earing the start of the following chapter as to not lose her place, when she noticed that she was being watched. Finley looked up just as a blue-haired student, a Slytherin from the looks of it, turned to walk away. But the girl was definitely staring earlier. "Do I spy a Stephen King fan?" Finley spoke up, her voice loud enough for the student to hear but not quite at a yell.

Freezing in her tracks... she had been spotted. Monica took a breath before she turned. She knew very well that it was quite rude to stare, and the last thing she needed was to be seen as not doing her job. Monica had never spoken to Greer before, knowing she was the caretaker, made her appear less intimidating then a professor, but still, she was an adult... would she be angry with Monica for staring rather than going on a patrol?

To keep from seeming lazy, Monica turned to face the woman, her hands crossed behind her back, as if she were a solider addressing a superior officer, "Ah... Sorry to bother you, was just out on patrol and--yes Carrie caught my eye... a good read for sure, but my concerns now are my studies, of course." Monica fought to keep a level head, appear as the best student and prefect. There had been so much pressure surrounding this role. She was giving such great responsibility at such a young age, and with only KNOWING of the wizarding world for less than 2 years. She had to prove herself, that they didn't make a mistake... that she was capable, and the right pick for the job.

But Monica's ideas were easier thought than produced... Not soon after stating her business did she drop her stance and take a step closer to Greer... "Have you read it before? I sure did inspire me for dealing with my nasty brothers from time to time!" Her mind trailed back to setting up a bucket of rose red paint in her brothers room, a plan better in theory than practice, due to the trip to the emergency room on account of a bucket full of paint knocking Michael out, plus the clean up was impossible! Why are rugs still a design choice? You could never clean them ever! Even with magic! ... probably.

Monica cracked a smile, "Though, now being a witch... I suppose it's easier to be like Carrie now." After the words left her lips, she snapped back to who she was addressing... right an adult.

Monica flustered again... and began to back away..."Sorry to bother you... I should --um-- leave you"

The caretaker suppressed a smile at the girl's sudden change in demeanor, she became so stiff, so prim, so proper. It was still strange to Finley how some students were almost afraid of her for no other reason than she was an adult.

The girl's façade began to slip as she spoke about the book, her excitement slipping out. Ah, there we go, much better. "Inspired you to duel your brothers?" Finley chuckled, "I'm sure the details of that story are quite something. I've read this plenty of times, it's an autumn favorite for me. Honestly most Stephen King novels just gets me in the headspace for falling leaves and apple cider. Have you seen the movie?" The thought didn't even occur to Finley that this student could be unaware of the concept of "movie". After so long away, it was almost as if Fin had forgotten that some people had no knowledge of muggle culture.

Fin shook her head as the girl began to back away. "No need, I've just finished my chapter anyways. You mentioned patrols, I take it you're a prefect? Hang on, don't tell me, I've been trying to learn your names... You're.. Maggie? No, Monica. Monica, final guess."

Lighting up as Finley spoke, Monica had nearly forgotten she was speaking to an adult. Though thinking about it for a moment, she almost couldn't believe that an adult liked the same books she did. Unable to contain herself when asked about the film, Monica chimed right in, "Yes I have! Though I prefer the older movie... it feels closer to the books, the newer one just feels.... I don't know, fake. Though all movies are, but this one didn't feel like the heart of the story to me." Words fell out of her mouth. Monica had grown up in a family where movies were a staple for Friday nights. Her father caring very much about the story, acting and heart of films... you would not be able to just watch a film at the Evan's household... you had to dissect it.

Being stopped as Monica tried to back away, Finn began to try to guess who she was... a smile on her face at the right guess, "Good thing you're going with your second answer." Monica said with a slight chuckle, "Monica Evans.... Second year prefect... trying to figure all of life out." She stepped closer, willing to jump back into the conversation. It was strange... the only other 'adult' in Monica's life that made her feel like an equal was her older sister.... now thinking about it, there was something about the caretaker that reminded Monica of Victoria a great deal. Maybe that is why she started feeling so free to open up to her?

"If I'm honest... it's rather a lot of responsibility... sometimes I feel as though I am disgracing the whole job."
