Emma hiked down the huge changing staircase, bursting out the grand door to make her way towards the grounds outside of the school. She relished the sound of crunching underneath her feet, looking down at black chucks with a slight smile. It seemed peculiar to smile in the strange weather that had only seemed to inaugurate to this day.

Her brown, shoulder-lengthed hair flopped up and down off her shoulders and back again as a great breeze pounded against her cheeks, pressing the hair to her face. She didn't mind, not even if she had to remove the strands to prevent them from winding up in her eyes. It was never a good way to spend a break. At least there had not been a drop of rain. Not at all had she prepared herself to face the rain that fell from the sky, without her phone, the weather was pretty much a mystery to her. She wanted to get home, but she didn't mind waiting a few months.

There was absolutely nothing to do during her break from classes, but still, she wanted to do something time-consuming. It didn't matter if the activity was beneficial or just for fun. Breaks were for fun and the occasional studying for an upcoming test. Not for completing homework that hadn't even been assigned, so far, the load of homework was much more bearable.

Stopping in a patch of grass and stripping her black bookbag from her shoulders, she glanced up and eventually around the area. She didn't care if she had been the only one on the grounds, only concerning of where those eyes were located. Surely, those eyes can't have been on her. It wasn't good for her nor the people looking.

Surely, with the school's enchanting system, there should have been some climate-controlling forcefield latched around the perimeter of the school. Magic was still fairly new to her, well, magic concerning those around her. It was against the law for her father to perform magic in front of the questioning Muggles that stood outside their home waiting for a flash of light to occur, sometimes performed by her grandfather or the failed attempts provided by herself. Everyone had to fail at one time, didn't they? It was a mere part of life, every wizard went through it.

From within her backpack, she pulled out a football, it still freaked her out to touch it the rubbery layer that covered the football. She had no idea if it was the skin of an actual pig or just made out of simple leather. Perhaps it was a mere metaphor. She tossed the ball up and down, a brown blurred spinning in the magically protected atmosphere of Hogwarts. She could still make out a slightly visible black blur, the signature. Twisting the ball so that it spun in midair she continued to catch it until she caught the name inside of her hands, she smiled... despite the fact she had been alone.

She had bought many athletic pieces of equipment with her, like a green, round, tennis ball (to bounce against the walls of her dormitory), a basketball (because, why not?), and lastly the gleaming, small, and golden snitch that belonged to the game of Quidditch. Nevertheless, she was a huge fan of sports herself, there was no team she could call her favorite, even though she definitely had her least favorites, backed up by logical thinking and understanding.

Tossing the football above her head, waiting for gravity to take its place, her eyes met the sky. If magic hadn't been so... well, magical, it would have been much easier to see the barrier. She wondered what color it would have been. Red, blue, purple, green, or even a bright yellow. Magic was still a mystery to her, despite her blood status.

Well, her not-so-prominent thoughts were interrupted by the massive weight, that was a football, colliding into her bare open hands. It wasn't much to do, but it was better than sitting in the Ravenclaw Common Room waiting for something miraculous to happen. That is if the drama ever did happen. She was never apart of it anyways, nor did she want to be. She couldn't admit that she did eavesdrop from her dormitory from time to time, no matter how hard she wanted to intervene and cut everything out. That only made things worse.

Outside. I just need to get outside. Amanda had been cooped up in the castle all day and felt like she needed to break free. Screw homework. I’ll do that later. She stopped by her dorm and flung her messenger bag onto her bed before heading down the ever-changing staircases. She rushed outside into the bright sunlight and tilted her smiling face upwards, the wind ruffling her hair. It felt great to smile; Amanda felt as if she hadn’t truly smiled in weeks.

As she looked back towards the people out on the lawn, Amanda noticed the Ravenclaw girl from the candy picnic tossing a football to herself. Amanda loved football, but nobody ever played it here. Here soccer was called football and football was called, well, American football. At least they still have basketball in the U.K. Basketball was Amanda’s main sport and she could play like nobody’s business. Back in Los Angeles, she had been on a club team with a bunch of other young girls. Those girls had been mean like everybody else, but when Amanda was playing basketball, she didn’t care if some silly girls were talking about her behind her back. Heck, they could gossip all they wanted to if it meant that Amanda could play basketball. Unfortunately, they didn’t have any hoops or a court at Hogwarts. That was okay with Amanda, her family had one at home.

But football was just as fun as basketball. If they had let girls be on football teams, Amanda probably would have joined one. She wasn’t sure if she should interrupt the other girl with the football, but who cares? If the brown-haired girl didn’t want Amanda hanging around, she could just say so and Amanda would be on her way. Amanda was a little surprised at her care-free attitude towards the whole matter, but she just wanted to play sports. She confidently strode up to the other Ravenclaw and said “Hey there. You wanna toss the football back and forth? If not, that’s okay too.”

The spiraling football continued to bounce up and down her arms, with ease as if it were nothing. Well, it was nothing, she had through around her football a million times (without exaggeration) around her house.  She had only received the football a month ago, and she had still managed to get it dirtier than her own dark brown hair.

Only a dark spot remained on her football, one that surrounded the signature itself. The name had been undoubtedly hard to read with its murky aura surrounding it, but she didn't mind one bit. It was still there, and that was all that mattered.

The self-esteem and satisfaction she carried in the sport was unbelievable. Frankly, she relished all sports, despite if she could play them or not. Evidently, there was not one sport she hadn't tried, except polo and golf, because she considered it unathletic... It was always fun to try something new, and that went for everything. Food, technique, and in some cases a sport. Back in her old hometown of London, she remembered the day where she scavenged the city on her bike to find the nearest basketball court, which turned out to be a mile away, but by then she had just decided to call it a day.

Up and down the football went in her 'innocent' arms, but she immediately stopped when she heard a voice in the vicinity. She recognized that voice, not only from the delectable picnic she had attended in the corridors but also from the common room... even though she preferred to be trapped inside of her dormitory.

"Yeah, sure," she said the words basically rolling off of her tongue, though the dangers of the environment swirled throughout her head. The ball could have easily rolled into the water and washed off the signature she had tried so hard to keep, or the wet dew of the grass might have made the ball slippery and harder to catch. Something was bound to go wrong.

What had shocked her was how Amanda had spoken her last words so casually. As if she knew the response that had almost come out of her mouth, she was tempted to change her mind once more. It was hard to say no, but it was also hard to say yes. Even though it hadn't been much of a big deal, she still felt obliged to say yes. Oh, how much she loved peer pressure.

Without warning, tossed the football to the girl, smiling slightly. At least she wasn't the only one who enjoyed the roughness of sports.

Amanda looked up in surprise when Emma said yes. She had been expecting to be turned away. Her surprise blossomed into joy and Amanda smiled broadly. Thank god that people actually like me here. I honestly don’t know what I would do if they didn’t.

Amanda caught the football deftly and brought it into her chest, grinning all the while. She had somewhat quick reflexes from playing sports for most of her life. The feel of the leathery football in her hands reminded Amanda of home. Not their new home in England, but the old one back in Los Angeles. Amanda, Johnny, and a large group of kids from their block would run out into the street and play football. It was mostly boys, but that was okay with Amanda because none of the girls her age liked her. Not many boys cared for her either, but they all thought that Johnny was cool so they tolerated Amanda. And that worked just fine for her.

Amanda arched her arm back and threw the ball to Emma, almost achieving a perfect spiral. “You like football too? Personally, I’m more of a basketball fan because I used to play on a team, but football is also loads of fun.”

It was almost hard to believe that someone had liked the stuff she enjoyed. None of that superior, fancy, sophisticated crap that some girls performed she witnessed as she walked down the halls on her way to class. It was almost rare that a girl liked a sport as harsh as football, but it wasn't like they were going to tackle each other... well, she wouldn't do it without her consent.

Watching as Amanda threw the ball towards her, she managed to get in a small round of applause before it impacted with the palm of her hand. A perfect throw, far better than she had seen her older cousins perform anyhow. She hadn't learned the sport from her mother, not even her father, he was far too busy to spend time with her anyways. It was her cousins, though they attended Durmstrang and they only spent time with each other during the summer break. Needless to say, their relationship had still stayed tight despite the nine-month separation every year.

Nodding in Amanda's direction, she spoke. "Of course, I play basketball too, but I'm not as good so I was mainly used as a small forward. What position did you play?" She asked curiously, throwing the ball back to her, though hers did not spin as much as Amanda's. Overall, it was still a pretty good throw considered she had spent months practicing Quidditch.

“I was a power forward. Unfortunately, I don’t really get to play now because of school and such.” Amanda shrugged. “I’m okay with that, though, because this school is pretty awesome most of the time. The classes here are definitely way more interesting than in Muggle school. My parents are wizards, even though we used to live in the Muggle community. How about you? Are your parents wizards too?”

Amanda was beginning to like Emma more by the minute. She seemed to be a friendly, easy-going person who was very similar to Amanda herself. Maybe this is it. Maybe I’ve actually just found my future best friend. Amanda smiled to herself, but didn’t let her excitement show. She wasn’t sure if Emma felt the same way though.

Amanda reached out to catch the football, but it tumbled to the ground instead of landing neatly in her hands. She grinned sheepishly. “Whoops.” She bent down and picked it up. “Nice throw, by the way.” Usually girls her age couldn’t throw at all. Amanda tossed it back to Emma. “Here, let’s do a running pass. I’ll run back a bit and you throw it to me.” Amanda began to jog father away for Emma, her arms open in preparation for the ball.

Emma loved Hogwarts, what she didn't like what the lack of Muggle sports. There was no basketball, no football, no soccer, and absolutely no volleyball. The thought made her absolutely sad. It was sad that she'd never see her teammate on her recreational team. Sure it was just fun and games at the nearest gym, but it gave her something to do. Now her time was completely booked with homework and practicing for the actual Quidditch Tryouts.

"My mum was a Muggle, so she most me involved in other things besides Quidditch and Gobstones. I wasn't even sure she knew what Gobstones was..." She said, catching the football in her arms with a radiant smile.

Glad to find someone who enjoyed the same things as her, unlike half of the girls at Hogwarts, she smiled and thought about the things they could accomplish together. She liked pranking, but she doubted that Amanda would feel the same way, so that was a negative. At least both of them enjoyed sports, it gave her a few more ideas. Basketball, baseball, and Quidditch just to name a few.

Watching as Amanda proceeded to jog away from her, she readied her hands and brought the ball up to her ear. Although she liked to play football, she had never played on an actual team. The closest thing to a team she had achieved was the coach of her cousin's middle school team... the muggles were absolutely lucky (in some ways of course).

Still, she wasn't backing up and threw the football in the air. The brunette knew that she wasn't going to be able to reach her throwing at the angle she threw at the most. With a little bit of wobble, it escaped her hands and made it's way over to her future best friend, Amanda.

"Well, I don't really know what Gobstones is either. I have a set, though, that I got for my birthday last year. Maybe you could show me sometime." Amanda slowed down her jogging as the football made it's way over to her, catching it in her arms and running back towards Emma. "Great pass," Amanda complimented her, smiling.

"So, what other things are you interested in besides sports?" Amanda asked, bringing her arm back in order to make a pass. She moved her arm forward, releasing the ball at a decent angle. Amanda wasn't sure that Emma would like skateboarding or playing instruments. Not many people seemed to at Hogwarts. But that was okay, seeing as there were other things that they most likely had in common.

Emma appeared to be a tomboy like herself, and for that Amanda was grateful. Most of the other girls here are either rich and stuck-up, or they just don't like me. Amanda couldn't stand people who thought that they were better than everybody else for some silly reason like money or their blood status. Being a half-blood, Amanda got to see both sides of the spectrum, and in her honest opinion, Muggles were usually a lot nicer than purebloods.

Oblivious to why she mentioned the game, she nodded. She was going to need to do lots of research on the game of Gobstones before the time came, with the humongous library at hand it wasn't going to take much effort. Well, unless the book was as large as the Quidditch book it was evidently going to take a while to finish. There was no shame in skipping a few chapters, right?

Beaming, she watched as Amanda made her way back over to her. "Uhm," She said quietly, tapping the pearls on her bracelet together. Quidditch was technically a sport, she couldn't say that. Along with dodgeball and volleyball. Everything close to her seemed to contain the word ball, well sports-wise anyway. "I like -" - don't say ice cream, or bike riding, or pranking, or Transfiguration - "Defense Against the Dark Arts... and playing violin, but that's the only thing I can think of... of course not too stereotypical or sporty."

This was not the same person she saw at the picnic, which didn't even turn out to be a picnic at all. Sure, she was daring and rather witty, but loads of things could have spiced up the picnic. One thing was for sure, she wouldn't be flirting with another male student from Hogwarts anytime soon. Well, at least, she hoped so.

"Have you decided to join any clubs yet?" She asked. If Amanda was going to join a club, so was she.

Clubs, the one thing that had not occurred to Amanda. She had looked around in her first year and hadn’t really found anything exciting or worth joining. But she had heard rumors of a few new clubs that looked promising. “Um, I don’t know,” she replied, shrugging. “I heard that somebody might start up a cheer squad, so that could be cool. Plus, I’ve always been a little interested in theater, so I’m thinking about joining a drama club.” She flipped her hair upside down and pulled it into a messy bun. Her short, shoulder-length hair tended to stick out every which way, but Amanda was never really concerned about looks. “You know, you should join the cheerleading thing with me. I’m sure it’ll be fun and plus, you kind of look like the cheerleader type.” She grinned at the other girl. “And I meant that as a compliment, by the way. Sometimes people think being a cheerleader is bad or too preppy or whatever.” She shrugged again. “I just tend to think of it as something that the pretty, popular girls do. It was never really for me, plus I doubt that any of them would have ever let me join their little clique.” She smirked. “And yes, there were cheerleaders at my elementary school, or primary school, as you Brits say.” She pushed her glasses up the bridge of her nose. “Anyways, enough about me. What about you? Are you in any clubs?’
