Post Sorting Ceremony

Becca let out a shaky breath as she studied the people around her, wondering if they were as nervous and excited as her. When she read about the houses she had been hoping for either Ravenclaw or Gryffindor, so she was thrilled with her sorting. She wondered if her new housemates would be easy to talk to, or if they would be too focused on learning to build friendships.

She kept moving her head back and forth trying to find a way to break into some conversation. She didn’t know what she would talk about, but it had to be a good topic. This people would be her classmates for the next seven years. Not only her classmates, but the people who shared the same house as her. She would see them more than her dad and aunt put together.

As she kept looking around, she saw a girl looking around the table too and waving at people. Becca stood up and quietly moved to sit across from this girl. By the time Becca reached her, the girl had begun drumming her fingers along the table and humming.

Becca hesitated. This girl seemed to be doing her own thing, and she didn’t want to interrupt that. Then the girl stopped. Well, now that she wasn’t humming and tapping to a beat, maybe she would want to talk to Becca.

Becca swallowed hard and tried to quickly think of something to say. She was going to go on about the sorting, because that was a strange but wonderful bit of magic. But what if everyone else thought a talking hat was normal? Becca didn’t grow up in this world and had no idea what to expect. She didn’t want to spend her first night, her first interaction rambling about something you might see every day.

Although, come to think of it, she didn’t recall seeing talking hats in Diagon Alley when she bought her supplies. Maybe asking about the hat would be a safe bet after all? Even if it wasn’t, the hat was the only thing that kept her from fully panicking before the sorting. Everything had got too overwhelming until he started speaking.

Hi, she said. I’m Becca. Did the hat surprise you as much as it surprised me? I don’t know what I was expecting, but it wasn’t a talking hat.

Becca laughed a little as she spoke, hoping it would come across casual and she wouldn’t sound as nervous as she felt.

Thomas was excited yet nervous at the same time. Finally a student of Hogwarts but didn’t expect to be put in Gryffindor, especially by a talking hat. He then started to look around and saw people sitting at tables. He didn’t know how to approach anyone or how to even start a conversation.

Thomas then walked over to a table which wasn’t occupied by anyone, hoping that maybe someone could walk towards him and start a conversation and then be best friends happily ever after. “I’m overthinking too much” he mumbled to himself, he turns his head around to see the other students and then turns back around. “Maybe I can meet new people in classes instead” he whispered to himself.

Thomas had let out a deep sigh and began playing around with his fingers for a good while now and then suddenly stopped. “I should be going to class now” He thought to himself but he didn’t stand up yet and had another deep though. “Eh, maybe I should wait a bit more…”

Thomas then just grew tired and thought of himself being a wuss, he turned to see a table and saw people, seeing two girls which caught his interest. One was drumming her fingers along the table and the other awkwardly trying to start a conversation. “Ah, screw it” he said to himself and began to walk towards the table and sat next to them. He paused for a second and looked at both of them. “HELLO!” He shouted accidentally, he got nervous and shy and now realising how he shouted was now embarrassed. He brushed it off quickly and waited for a reply smiling.

“HELLO!”

Becca startled at the sudden yelling voice and looked over. There was a new boy sitting beside them and smiling. He must have been the one who shouted. She was glad somebody else came by to speak to them. Keeping up conversations had never truly been a strong point, and she was a little shy when it came to starting up conversations. Not exactly a great combination to make new friends.

Becca put her right hand over her heart and laughed. She hoped it came across as a friendly gesture, as that was what she meant it to be.

You startled me, Becca said, still laughing. Perhaps I should take better care to watch my surroundings, especially in a magical school. I am Becca. Have you been sorted into Gryffindor as well?

Becca felt her cheeks reddened as she realized how fast she was speaking now. Goodness, if she was not careful, she would start rambling, and once she started rambling, she could not stop. And nobody liked it when somebody prattled on and on. And oh gosh, now she was rambling inside her brain.

She fixed a smile on her face hoping it did not look as strained as she felt it did before looking between the two students sitting near her, hoping somebody else would pick up the conversation.

No emotion crossed Jaime's face as she approached the Gryffindor table, but that in itself was hardly unusual. She was a quiet person, after all, and often unreadable by others. However, she was truly not feeling a lot right now. It wasn't the house she wanted, perhaps, but it's not like she was opposed to it. In fact, she didn't particularly care what she was sorted into, as long as it was gotten over with sooner than later.

As she took a seat, Jaime regarded her new peers curiously. They were rather rowdy, yes, but that was an entirely bad thing in itself. After all, Jaime grew up with siblings, and she sometimes considered the possibility of Zack or Maisie's insanity. Looking across from her, she noticed that the boy on the other end seemed rather nervous. He was sweating a lot, and every few seconds would wipe his hands down the side of his... grey robes. Ah, Jaime thought as she peered at the boy, he must be a first year. She felt sorry for him, but didn't say anything.

After a minute more of sorting, it was time for the feast to begin. Platters appeared on all the tables, and after briefly wondering where they came from, she helped herself to some chicken wings. It took a few servings, but after a while, Jaime was finally full. She wiped her mouth with her sleeve and looked up at the endless ceiling. If the food rate continued, Jaime decided, maybe she could get used to this place.

Akina hated wild, loud places. This Gryffindor Table was definitely a wild loud place. She quietly walked toward the table, trying to avoid everyone's gaze. It seemed like they were avoiding hers too. She sat in the corner, where it was empty. She stared around and noticed that most Gryffindors were already socializing. Easy for them, she thought grumpily, they don't have to deal with having no friends and feeling insecure and- and- and- Her thoughts trailed off into silence.

She turned to her left and noticed a girl sitting next to her. She was consuming a large chicken drumstick that Akina hadn't even noticed. Hoping she wouldn't catch her glancing at her, Akina pretended to be eating some mashed potatoes, her favorite food. Just a few words. Maybe one. Just say "Hello." It's that easy! Her brain completely disagreed so Akina just kept to silence.

The girl was now staring at the starry ceiling in silence. She's just like me, she thought But she's okay with being here, unlike me. Akina pretended to be adjusting the red star hairclip and rewearing her dark gloves. It was too loud here, WAY too loud. Would anyone notice if I just sneaked off to bed early? No I should stay. Akina took a deep breath and waved at the girl when she glanced at her.

After hours of reading early in the morning, Alexander entered the Great Hall and sat lonely as usual. He was eating an English breakfast, which reminded him how much he was starving. Usually, when he would get angry, he would forget to eat for hours or sometimes for days and after the Sorting Hat DISASTER, he had such a moment again. He was looking at the Ravenclaw table with sadness and frustration, he not only felt but he knew that he was supposed to sit, as that table was his actual place. And until his anger returned, he put his head down and proceeded to eat.

He could hear other Gryffindor students laughing, discussing various things and talking about homework and classes, especially the most popular topic was Quidditch, unlike for Alexander who never liked that sport and always preferred dueling.

''I should get to owlery by the way,'' - thought Alexander, - ''I ought to write my mother that I am okay, though not happy.''

He finished his breakfast and looked at his 35,2 cm black walnut wood and phoenix feather wand and he realized how impatient he was to start classes and uses his wand, and especially to use it after he would finish his journey in Hogwarts.

After being sorted into Gryffindor, Alexis walked over to the Gryffindor table and sat down. She looked over at the Ravenclaw table and saw her brother David. She waved at him and saw him wave back. She saw a frown on his face and she just smiled at him. She then noticed that his frown was no longer there and a smile replaced it.

Alexis then decided to eat some food, so she took what she liked and put it on her plate. She then decided to eat. While eating, Alexis hopes she could meet some new people at her new home and hopefully, she'll make some new friends as well.

After she was all done eating her food she decided to look around to see if she would be able to talk to anyone. She noticed that everyone was talking to one another and she didn't really want to interrupt them, so she decided to wait until someone else talked to her.

"I should probably write an owl to my parents soon. But, David would most likely write to them after dinner is all done. I'll wait until the fifth, then I'll write to them." Alexis thought.

She then saw dessert appear. She took some and put it onto her plate. She then began eating the dessert. She really hopped she could be able to make some friends with people in her house and also in different houses.

"If you trust someone so much, they must be one of your best friends, right?"

Post-Sorting Ceremony

The lighter feeling he'd unexpectedly had after the Sorting Hat had exclaimed his new House quickly dissipated as he sat down between the red Gryffindors. A few more students followed in his footsteps, getting their names called alphabetically to sit on the stool and wear the magical hat that would put them in their rightful House. But Levi wasn't paying attention anymore to the whole ceremony. Gryffindor, of all houses... He thought to himself. Father will kill me. His second thought was. The prideful Hawthorne's with all their green and silver memorabilia he'd so proudly put in his suitcase alongside the regular standard robes. What a joke he would make, opening that trunk in the dormitory later.

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, the Sorting Hat was done. The line of children he'd entered the Great Hall with had found their places. The Headmaster must've said a few words while Levi was pondering how not to end up disowned by his family, because before he fully realized it the entire table was covered in food. From roasts to mashed potatoes to something that looked remarkably like caviar: Levi's stomach rumbled. It had been hours since he'd eaten and in his mind that was way too long.

Right, not like thinking about the imminent Howler will make me feel better... He grabbed one of the big spoons and forks, before shoveling a massive amount of the roast chicken on his plate. He might've been one of the smallest boys there: it surely wasn't because of his eating habits. A nice side of mashed potatoes, and a tiny bit of broccoli complimented his first plating. At least I won't starve here. The disadvantage of stuffing one's face was that he could barely pay attention to the people around him. Yes, he'd gathered the looks of at least one girl he remembered getting Sorted before him... He was almost certain this was due to his speed of eating. But what was her name again... Black... No... Bree.. No...

"Briarwood, Akina Briarwood!" Had he just... Accidentally shouted the name that popped into his mind, simply because he was so focused on eating that he forgot thinking required... not opening your mouth?

Akina turned around at the mention of her name. Sitting there was a boy who had previously been sorted. He was also a Gryffindor, she could tell from his robes. But how did he know who she was? "Uhm...hi?" Akina said in a voice that wasn't unwelcoming, but wasn't fully friendly either. Her breath caught in her throat as a random thought flew through her mind. Has he been stalking me?! No, no, no. That's just really weird.

"How...do you know who am I?" Akina asked slowly. She fidgeted in her seat. Her not-helpful thoughts were not making this any less awkward. "I mean, how do you know who I am?" Her clever mind soon deciphered that he had probably been paying attention at the names during the sorting ceremony.

She glanced over at the Ravenclaw table longingly. That was where she belonged. Well, Gryffindor was okay, but Ravenclaw seemed awesome. They were chattering excitedly, and meanwhile everyone here was so shy, like her! Wasn't this Gryffindor? Brave, bold Gryffindor? Why was she so shy? She didn't belong in Gryffindor, she belonged in Ravenclaw. Akina glanced over at the boy again. He had a bright smile plastered on his face. Why though? Is he trying to hard? Is he struggling to fit in, like me?

@Levi Hawthorne sorry for such a late reply!

“How… do you know who am I? I mean, how do you know who I am?” The girl looked over in his direction. This really shouldn’t surprise Levi, but for some reason he really didn’t think he’d yelled her name that loud. Still, the damage was done and since he didn’t really know anyone else at the Gryffindor table he decided to make the most of it.
“I uhh. I don’t. Not really, I mean. I just remembered you were called before I was and I’m trying to become acquainted with all the new faces. Boy, there’s a lot of them, aren’t there? I always thought magic was slowly dying out, but judging from everyone here we’re nowhere near that…” He realised he was talking a lot. “I’m Levi, by the way. Levi Hawthorne. I uhh, did not expect to be sitting here.”

Longingly, he looked over to the Slytherin table. He thought he’d seen her eyes go in a different direction as well, but wasn’t quite sure. “Did you? Think you’d be in Gryffindor, I mean?” Maybe if she wasn’t meant to be there either, he’d feel less alone. After all, the moment he dreaded most after having his name combined with Gryffindor was the moment he’d have to tell his homefront. He knew he couldn’t really keep that moment away for long. But still, he could try to at least find his place a little bit before admitting the plan was no longer in motion. Maybe, if he’d make a friend, he could present his Sorting as an opportunity to his family rather than a tremendous failure.
