Blessed White Bird
Wandering around in the snow had always been something that Qrow enjoyed, their body running naturally warm allowing them to stay out in the cold longer than most, and so, dressed in a thick kit green turtle neck gifted from their Grandmother, gray-scale plaid pants, a long black trench coat, a black satchel and a pair of black leather, platform shoes, the young Slytherin wandered down and away from the warmth of the castle towards the lake.
It had started snowing early yesterday morning, the early November sun doing nothing to disperse the cold white blanket that covered the grounds of Hogwarts. Had they been old enough to wander down to Hogsmede, Qrow would have liked to sit peacefully in The Three Broomsticks, a butterbeer by their side as they read or watched the comings and goings of others.
Alas, they were only in their first year.
Instead, Qrow found themself nearing the lake, watching as robins and various other birds, namely a small murder of crows, pecked at the snow in hopes of finding some food.
Kneeling on the floor, ignoring as the snow melted into the fabric of their pants, the child started digging through their bag, rummaging past notebooks, loose parchment and inkwells, before pulling out a small brown bag full of torn up seedy bread. There wasn’t much, just what they had stolen during breakfast this morning.
For a while now, they had been working on trying to befriend a group of crows that resided by the lake - having stumbled across them in late September - but the young Slytherin didn’t know much about their migration pattern, and up until this Saturday, having been so busy with school work, finishing classes for the day and then almost immediately retreating to the library until curfew, that they hadn’t had any time to come check on them recently.
It had all started out as a joke really.
The weekend after arriving, the child had been reading under a tree by the lake with a couple of biscuits when they spotted a murder of crows, one of which had been bright white with red eyes. Their name meant blessed white crow, and the irony of spotting their name sake had been enough for them to put down their book and try and get a closer look. Of course upon seeing the redhead approach, the birds backed off, hopping away from the supposed predator. Animals had always been easier to understand than other people, and so understanding their concern at the intrusion, Qrow crushed one of the biscuits in their hands and threw the crumbs in the direction of the birds.
Suddenly that one occurrence turned into two, then three, and then it was almost every other day, but as Christmas grew closer, the young Slytherin found their homework piling up, and so they hadn’t had the opportunity to go see the birds in a while.
Whilst not having much time to research the birds in detail, they had learned a few things from constant observations, namely that crows are intelligent and smart birds tending to hold back while interacting with humans, however with a lot of patience and treats, the first year had managed to form a sort of shaky friendship with them. Secondly, they were social with each other, preferring to stay in groups, and finally, they had excellent memories. That last point was only reinforced by the fact that the birds had seemingly learned to recognize the child, as well as tie them to the prospect of food. Qrow had also learned that whilst the birds were still kind of skittish around them, if they stayed perfectly still and relaxed, the birds would occasionally perch on their head or shoulders.
What the Slytherin was really trying to achieve though, was being able to pet the birds, a goal that had blossomed upon first catching sight of their namesake, of whom they quickly christened with the name ‘Bleak’.
Bleak was by far the most cautious, taking much longer than the others to even begin to trust a human, however on this particular day, the white feathered bird must have been feeling quite in its element, being able to camouflage rather brilliantly amongst all the snow and ice, that as Qrow Beithir kneeled in the ground, knees damp from the snow melting beneath them, the creature seemed rather happy to be perched on top of the child's shoulder.
That was until the soft crunching of snow being stepped on, sounded behind them, scaring all the birds away…

Near didn't like winter very much, but it was better than being inside, crowded with all of the students who were there to keep warm in the freezing weather. So he made his way outside, his lungs filling with the crisp, clean air. He readjusted his bookbag, filled with books about his favorite things, creatures. He continued to wander around in the snow for quite some time, wrapping his heavy coat around himself as he tried to find a decent spot to settle down and read.
He began to enjoy the cold weather, as snowflakes fell on his white hair, and he looked around in amazement. Of course London had snow, but he never truly realized how beautiful it was until he was alone, surrounded in serene silence.
He began to wander some more, enjoying the beauty of nature, and he made his way towards the large lake near Hogwarts. He always enjoyed reading under the trees there, as the waves quietly lapped around the beach. Much less chance of running into a student who would rather talk then let me read in peace. He decided. So he began to make his way towards there, in a slow trot, taking his time. Besides, what did he have to rush for? It was just him and the snow, and he wondered if he could be able to avoid people by blending in with his white hair. Although his pitch-black coat ruined the effect. He was pretty small, for first-years anyway, so he hoped people wouldn't notice him. In the Muggle world, he was greatly ignored by all but those who were against him. He was hoping he would be completely ignored in the Wizarding World as well. People who were noticed gained friends, and companionship...but they also gained enemies. He shivered. He had only gained one of the two in his lifetime.
He tried to make his footsteps light, but his large boots crunched against the snow very loudly. He would have to fix this later. As the vast lake came into view, a shade of red caught his eye. It was very easy to see in the completely white landscape, and upon closer inspection, it appeared to be another student, out in the snow, just as he was. He had been hoping he would be alone, but no matter. This student didn't want to appear to bother him at all. But then he noticed something as he was thinking this. is that student.....sorrounded by crows..? T-they are.....that's...how? Thats amazing.... He couldn't stop from admiring the student in awe. They were surrounded by a murder of crows....eating from his hands...perching on his shoudlers....but he noticed a white crow on his head. And he was amazed. I've never seen a crow like that.....or a student who loves animals as much as I do....I wonder- I wonder if they would mind teaching me...how to do that.
He was wondering if he could sketch the student, with his friends.....and without realizing it, he had crept closer, trying to get a clearer veiw of the immense show of unusual friendship. But he took a wrong step, and his boots crunched loudly. He froze, as the crows were all scared off, feeling immensely guilty. gosh dangit Near....why do you always have to ruin everything... He couldn't move, as the crows flew off. He wanted a way to make it up to the student, but he knew he would probably just make things more worse than he already had.
"Oh my gosh- im so so sorry- I didnt mean to- im sorry..."He apologized profusely, feeling angry at himself as he had interrupted this student's alone time, which he had grudges on others for doing exactly that to him. He could barely form coherent sentences, but his curiosity won over his embarrassment, if only for a moment. "that...that was amazing.....how did- how did you do that?" he wondered. His voice was far too soft, and he hoped the student could hear him. He wasn't very loud to begin with , and his red eyes were a mix of guilt and fascination.

Avhira heard the two students, and looked up from where she sat on the beach. she was sketching at the time, and was a little upset she had been interrupted. however, this was a chance to make friends, right? So she put her sketchbook in her bag, and stood up, forgetting that there was ice. She slipped, fell, and yelped. "Ack!"
Avhira threw her hands out, attempting to catch herself. she failed falling down. she scratched her hand, and dropped her bag, which slid out onto the frozen lake. "No!" she exclaimed , attempting to grab it. she missed, sliding some more.
Only then did she realize she had forgotten about the other students. She turned around, apologizing profusely.
"I am so, so sorry... i probably startled you.. and interrupted you.. i didn't mean to, i am really sorry!" Avhira exclaimed. She felt awful about it, and wanted to make it up to them.
"I'm so, so very sorry, and if there is any way i can make it up to you, please let me know." She said, attempting to get up again. she managed to stand up, although she was having a hard time staying up.
"In hindsight, i probably shouldn't have came over here...."

"Oh my gosh- im so so sorry- I didn't mean to- i'm sorry..." There was a pause.
"that...that was amazing.....how did- how did you do that?"
The boy’s apology fell upon deaf ears, as toxic green eyes angrily glared at the offending noise. Months of progress and patience to gain the bird's trust had disintegrated within the space of a few seconds, and the young Slytherin was beyond pissed. They had started coming here to get away from the other students. It was their small safe haven from all of the mind numbing social interaction that the other children seemed to find so favorable.
Personally, Qrow found it annoying.
Guilt and fascination gleamed in the boy's crimson coloured eyes - Qrow couldn’t help but believe they were too pigmented to be real. However, the more they took note of the stranger, the more their anger faded, albeit, unwillingly.
He was the personified version of the white bird that had been perched on their head; crimson coloured eyes and white hair, combined with his pale complexion, allowed him to easily blend in with the snow around them. He was dressed in a thick heavy coat, and the redhead recognized him to be a fellow first year from Ravenclaw house, though his name escaped them.
It was likely their growing fondness for the blessed white bird that, against better judgment, caused the young slytherin to stop angrily glaring at the boy and instead, point at a space by the tree, before standing up themself and maneuvering through the snow to sit close by. They should have brought their scarf, perhaps a hat too. The cold weather was finally starting to grate on them, their ears and face turning a rosy shade of pink as the crisp air bit at their exposed skin. In an attempt to keep the chill off of their face, the young metamorphmagus’ hair began to lengthen until it hung in a thick mane of curls, cascading down their back. Whilst it didn’t help the cold damp that seeped into the fabric of their pants, it did aid in protecting their ears from the cold.
“Qrow Beithir, pronouns they/them.” They stated plainly, rummaging through their bag for more scraps of food in hopes of enticing the birds back once again.
They shouldn’t be doing this, perhaps this school was causing the child to become soft. A few months ago they would have yelled at this boy, using words that most adults would have punished them for.
Maybe it was Wilhelm’s influence. Qrow was rather disappointed at themself for becoming so insufferably attached to the boy and the company he offered, his presence in their shared common room seemed to have been enough for some of his mannerisms to have rubbed off on them. They almost wondered if any of their own traits had rubbed off on him, but they quickly shook that thought from their head. Their thoughts needed to stop straying out of line.
Somewhere in the bottom of their bag, Qrow found a packet of old stale biscuits(gods only knew how long they had been in there), and whilst they weren’t ideal, the birds probably wouldn’t mind them, hopefully.
Crushing a few of them up, they held out their hands in a sort of offering to their companion.
“Don’t make me regret this bird boy...”
As those words left their mouth another Ravenclaw student stumbled into the conversation - Literally - following a dozen or so apologies from her.
Aren't Ravenclaws supposed to be smart? Why did they apologise so much?

He had only begun to look slightly more guilty, mentally hitting himself. The student had reason to be mad, of course. Near would have been mad too. But there was something about their piercing green eyes that made him want to dig a hole and not come out. No one's ever looked at me like that....this student could probably send even the Griffindors away with a glare like that....
Even through the glare, as he shrunk slightly from fear, Near couldn't help but notice this was a first year, from his size, and he could have sworn he'd seen them from somewhere before...perhaps the sorting ceremony? He then noticed the robes. Slytherin...I haven't met many of those.....this student looks as if they truly are a Slytherin....with a glare like that-....it's as if they're looking right through me.....
he was about to turn and run off, like the coward he was, when the Student's anger seemed to turn into slight exasperation, pointing to a spot underneath a nearby tree. To his surprise, the Slytherin then went and promptly sat down. does this mean...they want me to sit with them..? He gulped, slightly nervous, as he went and sat down next to the fiery-haired Student, looking out at the snow. he hoped they would forgive him for scaring off the crows.
But what surprised him the most, was when the Student's fiery red hair began to grow, as he let out a small gasp. only our first time meeting, and they have impressed me so much! I wonder what other tricks my fellow Hogwarts Student has in store for me! "Y-your hair! How e-exquisite...!"
but he wasn't able to go on, as the Student offered him a few crushed up biscuits, and his name. Qrow, how ironic, for someone who was friends with actual Crows.... and they had the same pronouns as Azreal, how interesting! His attention then turned to the offered food. an offering of friendship? Or am I just completely desperate? He was slightly surprised though, as the Student then called him 'Bird Boy', which made him laugh, slightly. That was definitely a new one. Azreal had often called him 'le Petit,' or Little Rabbit, as a few hours of researching french had shown him. He welcomed the new nickname as another subtle sign of friendship.
He was about to take the offering when a loud yelp made him jump slightly, panicked. But he relaxed when he realized it was another student, who had slipped from the ice, muttering apologies. He seemed to vaguely recognize her from the Ravenclaw corridor, and was amazed to know there was another white-haired Ravenclaw out there! But if she was so interesting, why hadn't he met her properly before? perhaps my nose was buried in a book...
He then noticed as the girls bookbag, hey, she has a bookbag just like me! Wonder if she likes books or sketching,,? slid out onto the thick ice, and giggled slightly as she tried to reach it in vain. Realizing that was rude, he then stood up, brushing snow off his coat before bowing to Qrow apologetically. "Please p-pardon me, I'll be right back."
He then trudges down the snow awkwardly, his boots crunching, he then helps the Ravenclaw up, before returning his attention to the bookbag. I know i'm usually a coward- but it could be dangerous for her to get it.....so why not me? Azreal would want me to- I think. walking on the icy lake, he slipped multiple times and almost toppled over, before carefully picking up the bag, and waddling back awkwardly. On the way back though, he was not so lucky. Losing his balance, he tumbled to the ground, hard, skidding the rest of the way. cold...cold cold.....and man- that hurt. he grimaced slightly, snow in his hair as he held up the bookbag triumphantly. "you looked like you needed help.." he says softly, before getting up and shaking snow from his hair. He would be more proud of himself- if the ice wasn't so hard and everything hurt. He then waved to Qrow as if showing he was okay, almost tripping himself into a pile of snow in the process, laughing. It was a lot less easier to be shy when he was focused on not breaking his neck on the slippery surface.

Avhira was startled that the other student had helped her, and now even more embarrassed that the other student had slipped as well. She muttered another apology, slowly making her way over to Near.
"Thanks.. I'm sorry you fell.. there's a path of snow i used to get down here safely, but it seems to have joined the ice now.. I recognize you, You're Near, a fellow First Year Ravenclaw, right?"
Avhira asked, holding her hand out gently for her bag.
"I'm Avhira, I've seen you in the common room. We were both reading though, so I didn't want to bother you. I'm surprised to see another student with silvery hair, I didn't think it was that common. Mine's dyed, but its naturally really light, I just wanted to give it a slightly prettier hue.... I'm rambling, aren't I? I'm sorry, I guess I'm just awful with words..."
Avhira held out her hand to help Near back to the less icy area, maybe together they could make it. She was wondering if the other student thought them both dumb. She certainly hoped not, she couldn't afford to have an enemy before she had any friends.
"Uhm.. I'm sorry for asking, but I don't want to misgender you.. What is your gender and pronouns?"
Avhira really was socially awkward. But it was a little charming, at least to some. She was doing her best, and she wasn't failing that horribly. at least, not right now. She hadn't fallen for the last few minutes. She giggled as Near smiled as he stopped himself from falling.
"I guess i wont be reading or sketching down by the lake for the rest of the winter.. too dangerous for every kind soul who decides to help me.."

The hopes of their feathered friends coming back had long since diminished, but right now they had two other birds, two Ravenclaws, that Qrow had bemusedly watched stumble, slip, and slide their way to a safer place close by.
The Slytherin stood, their faces now marginally warmer both from their longer hair and from the laughter they had suppressed at the other two students. They made their way over to the two blue-robed first years, grateful for how their parents took them ice skating on the lake by their home every year, walking with an odd sort of grace over all the ice.
Both Near and Avhira, if Qrow had heard their names correctly, seemed to be fine, even after all their stumbling. Honestly, if the child was going off of appearance and apparent overly apologetic personalities, the two Ravenclaws could have been mistaken for twins. Both had silvery-white hair and pale skin.
The biggest difference between the two had to be their eyes, with Near’s being a vibrant shade of red and Avhira's being a pretty shade of violet.
The apologising was going to get annoying very quickly, however, and if Qrow was going to attempt to befriend these two, they were going to have to do something about that.
"Heh. Clearly, you two eòin bheaga gheala ‘ave never been ice skating." The redhead teased, mentally praising themselves for the fitting Gaelic nickname.
"Qrow Beithir. Firs' year Slytherin. Pronouns they/them."

Avhira seemed a little more sure of herself now, after slipping and sliding around. If these two didn't hate her after that, she was sure she'd be fine.
"I have, once. It's nice to meet you, Qrow. I'm Avhira, if you didn't hear me already. I'm non-binary, but I prefer she/her pronouns."
Avhira helped Near up, before walking over to Qrow.
"What you were doing with the bird really was impressive. I could see you while I was reading... and sketching... I was doing both...?"
She seemed to have just realized this, as she pulled her sketchbook out of her bag. She flipped to the page that her pencil (brought from home) was still in, revealing a sketch of Qrow with a bird on their shoulder, with several birds flying up around them.
"Oh. I- uhm... I guess I drew you?"
She seemed to question herself as she flushed pink, blushing with embarrassment. She glanced up at Qrow, hoping to see their reaction. If it was a good drawing, but Qrow was mad about it, she'd be able to tell. same with if it were a bad drawing but Qrow was honored, a good drawing and Qrow was honored, or a bad drawing and Qrow was mad. The only time she could read people's faces was when they were looking at art.

He thanked Avhira as he was helped up, holding his arms out for balance. He looked very discombobulated, and he was slightly jealous as Qrow easily glided towards them, as he tried not to fall onto the slick surface again. "wow.....Azreal would love all of you so much- I wish they were here..." He smiles softly. He couldn't help but talk about his best friend, Snow. He also he couldnt admit that he died his hair as well....mainly just because it was one thing that he had control of, in London. Man- it's freezing, but it is so worth it, to be with new friends.....is it really that easy to make friends?
He peeks over her shoulder at the drawing, amazed. He had been hoping to sketch Qrow with his friends as well, it was almost like he and Avhira were the same person! It was a very amusing concept to him, to even think about. I wonder what Snow would say about these people. he chuckled softly as he thought of this, then he fell on the ice again. Being on the lake was beginning to hurt- a lot. And he never really went ice-skating in London- he was too afraid to be caught alone ever again....not after the Field Incident.....He got up, wiping himself off. "How amazing! I was thinking about sketching them as well! Maybe we could both draw them sometime! Heheh..." He realized what he said. "UH- i mean- I-...w-well- s-sorry I know we just m-met- a-and stuff-" crap- my stuttering is back again.....why can't I just be normal-
His face turns red from embarrassment. Of coourse these people would totally reject him after he said that- "n-nevermind- it was a stupid Idea anyway-" he mutters, his hair falling into his eyes.

Qrow was rather fond of art—drawing, painting, crafts.
The thing is, they were used to doing the drawing, not being the subject that was being drawn.
It was rather odd to know that someone had thought them interesting enough to look at to feel the need to draw them. It was rather good.
"You’re a strong artist. We’ll have to meet one of these days so I can show you my own drawings. Perhaps we can trade tips?"
The winter sun was beginning to set, and a glance at the clock tower showed that dinner was soon. All three of them were going to have to head back, and the redhead wanted to go back to their dorm in the dungeons to change out of their damp clothes before heading to the great hall to eat.
Not to mention, if the chill was starting to get to them, then the other students must be freezing.
"We should head back to the castle. Dinner will be here soon, and I’m not sure about you, but I’d like to change into some dry clothes beforehand. If you’re worried about catching a cold, I suggest going to the nurse and getting yourself a pepper-up potion to warm up."
They walked off, heading back up towards the castle, before pausing.
"I guess I’ll see you two around."
And with that, they were off.
