┏ ┓-----L ate winter was a time for warmth and comfort. A time for the commonroom, the great hall for its fires, the castle– places where students could shield themselves from the brisk welcome of the Scottish Highlands. Not for Avery.
There was something about the frosty surroundings that enticed him, and it went beyond the fact that he was usually left in peace out here at this time. Avery had taken up beneath a tree to the north, up a frost-tipped grassy verge; positioned perfectly to view the castle and the great lake in the south. This particular tree was an elderly oak, and its leaves had long since fallen to the peaty soil below, married with twigs and pines that had been strewn at its feet like a blanket. There Avery had found another ‘special’ place, like the one he had cultivated at the library, one he had by now; shared.
This was a good spot for spell casting. He wouldn’t call it practising, because he didn’t need it, but he did enjoy freely casting at the trunk, or out into the field; when there wasn’t anyone walking up the hill towards him, that is.
Duelling had taken up his entire focus, but it wasn’t an obvious detriment to his other grades, so he could afford to spend his free time furthering his wandwork.
“Tarantallegra!” He cast at the tree, his wrist snapping in sync with the curvy ‘W’ wand movements.
“Mucus ad Nauseum!” He added in quick succession. Avery quickly followed it up with a distinct ‘V’ flick: “Flipendo!” he gave, which sent a pulse of energy that struck the trunk and caused it to creak slightly against the force of his assault.
His last spell was obviously the most effective, as trees couldn’t develop legs to dance, or awful colds! He was seemingly practising chaining his attacks; trying to perfect the timing and execution of each in quick succession. And he was making a fair bit of noise doing it as he kept repeating the cycle of spells, trying to better his last attempt.

A Brisk Boy In A Brisk Field
When talking
The frosty frigid air brushed gently against the frosted ground. The smell of frost wafted through the air. Many birds seemed to sing a sweet melody through out the school grounds. Wandering around the grounds was Alana her fiery red hair was pulled back in a half pony tail while the rest of her fiery hair seemed to bop up and down her shoulders. The young girls sea-foam teal eyes sparkled with pure joy.
The young first year girl was enjoying her peaceful walk. Her mind was in a blissful sense of peace. As Alana was enjoying the frigid air nip at her sun-kissed freckled face. The frigid chilly air made the tip of Alana's ears slightly red along with her button shaped nose. Though the young girl did not mind the chilly air. It actually felt refreshing to the young girl. Her red and gold scarf was neatly wrapped around her small neck her black robes were flowing behind her every step. Her raven black skirt seemed to blow gently in the cool frigid breeze, her black legging seemed to cling to her lanky legs. The girl stood about four feet five inches so one would say she was fairly short for her age. Though that never bothered Alana she enjoyed her height after all that is who she is.
Alana's ears perked up when the young girl heard the sound of someone casting spells. The fiery red haired girls sea-foam teal eyes scanned the area noticing the fairly large elderly oak tree. It's leaves were bare due to the wintery season. Alana being the curious child she is moved closer north to investigate the scenery in front of her.
As Alana trekked forwards the young fiery red hair girl noticed in front of her a boy, Alana gazed at the boy in front of her taking in his appearance. The boy seemed fairly pale but it could have been due to the gentle sunlight that was barely noticeable. The boys hair seemed dark in color as well. Alana's sea-foam blue eyes gazed at the boy curiously. Moving closer though she was careful she did not wish to startle him or anything. Alana stopped a few feet behind the young boy who seemed to focus on what he was doing. Alana noted by the way the tree looked the young boy was practicing.
"Tree's are perfect practice dummies aren't they?"
Alana spoke sweetly her honey like tone drifted a bit as a smile appeared on her freckled splattered face. Her sea-foam teal eyes sparkled happily. Alana glanced happily at the stranger in front of her though Alana was curious she was trying to be respectful as well. As if a lightbulb went off in the red haired girls head. She grew a wider grin looking at the young stranger.
"I am Alana by the way! Alana Dibble!"
Alana introduced herself quickly a grin radiating off her sun-kissed freckled splattered face. Alana tucked a strand of her fiery red hair behind her left ear smiling brightly. As the frigid chilly air brushed past the young girl.

┏ ┓-----A very was in the motions of spellcraft. Completely captivated by his casting of the spells, to ensure that each went off without a hitch, as she approached up the frozen field to the tree he had made one of his ‘places’.
If he was facing her, she would have seen him startle, but thankfully he was facing the same tree that he was pummeling with spells. After a quick breath he looked over his shoulder, planting dark eyes on her from beneath dark, knitted, brows.
“You’re a funny one.” He gave with a slight squint, as he tried to work out if she was being genuine or sarcastic. Naturally, he lowered his wand and turned around properly, as she had made her introduction. Quietly, and very obviously, he judged her, before he came to the conclusion that her sweet smile was either genuine or a level of acting he didn’t think she’d be able to possess. Genuine, then.
“Dibble.” He repeated, it wasn’t a name he knew.
“Practice dummies get hogged on Saturdays, and there’s too many people around.” He nodded then, affirming that point. He didn’t know if that was correct, he was lying through his teeth, but he suspected that would be the case as that would be what he assumed everyone else who was serious about their education would be doing.
“Anyway, I’m Leveret. Avery Leveret.” He gave in the typical pureblood fashion, rolling his wand in his hand instead of offering it out to her. “I don’t suppose you were seeking me out to give me a letter you found, were you?”

Alana giggled at Avery's response. For some reason the young girl found it amusing that the young boy called her funny. Alana stifled her giggling quickly smiling brightly up at the slightly taller boy.Alana spoke sweetly though carefully. The young fiery red haired girl knew how purebloods are with muggles though Alana knew that it did mean they are bad. Alana's mother always told the young girl how some families are stuck in old way's but it does not mean that all purebloods are they same. Sometimes it takes time for them to understand some with out the blood status. Alana smiled sheepishly with a caring lookin her sea-foam teal eyes. The young girl's sea-foam teal eyes examined Avery he seemed to keep himself pretty upkept. By the way Avery spoke she could tell he came from a proper possibly wealthy family. Though the young half-blood girl tilted her head with a very dumb look on her face when he mentioned a letter. Her sea-foam teal blue eyes held uttermost confusion.
"Dibble is a very unusual name isn't it. My Mums name was Hawkins she was a pureblood she married my Da' and well he's a muggleborn. But he is also a wizard that is how my parents met after all.
"Why would I be caring a letter that is what owls are useful for. I just saw you pummeling the tree seemed like a lot fun really. Though I do agree the weekends seem more lively with people. Suppose that is why the outdoors are better helps you escape everything."
Alana spoke softly though she rambled slightly. The young fiery red haired girl glanced at Avery curiously. The young girl seemed curious about him, after all many students would not wanna be out in this frigid cool air. Though Alana could tell this boy definitely hold some type of superiority in his tone. The young Gryffindor was ever so curious about him. Many would think not shaking a hand be a sign of rudeness, Alana shrugged it off she knew many people were raised differently and the young girl expected it.
Alana's fiery red hair swayed gently as the frigid cool air picked up slightly. Alana moved her Gryffindor scarf up a bit more trying to protect her exposed cheeks from the frigid air. Gazing at the young boy in front of her Alana's sea-foam teal eyes sparkled with pure joy. Though this boy seemed like the type who may not be looking for friends Alana was ever curious.
"I um don't know any spells, but I love to help if you need the help. Could be a practice dummy. That sounds fun. Though I am not sure how the nurse would feel about that oh well not my problem more of hers. Or I um could cheer you on, but a being a practice dummy maybe more useful."
The young fiery red haired girl rambled slightly. Alana wished to help the boy in front of her and the only way the fiery red haired girl could think of was being a target herself though one would assume that would just be pure craziness for Alana she saw it as a way of being useful and able to help in a way. After all the fiery red haired girl was all about being nothing but caring even if she were to get injured. Though one would deem her careless maybe a bit reckless at that, but overall Alana figured what could possibly happen she figured helping the young boy practice would be fun after all even if she knew no spells. Her sea-foam teal eyes sparkled happily with a radiating look inside them. The frigid cool air made the Alana's fiery locks sway back and fourth gently as a smile broaden on the young girls soft oval face her freckled splattered face seemed to shine with pure happiness.

┏ ┓-----T here was an immediate pause in everything that was going on inside his head. He was dumbfounded, struck by the lively girl that seemed to radiate positive energy.
She had just admitted to him that her father was muggleborn, and he was immediately taken back to the elaborate parties held at the Leveret Manor, where many of the attendees would openly speak about how such was taboo, and should be shunned or discouraged. Some argue it is nurture, over nature, others argue that one's environment has some kind of implication, but in Avery’s case he was damned with all three factors responsible for the development of his prejudices. Pale lips contorted as he went to speak a harsh scorn, but he managed with every fibre of his being to sew them shut for the second; his tongue was better managed than it was let loose.
“And she took your fathers’ name?” Was what followed his valiant effort, he had promised himself he wouldn’t judge so hard but found that once he put air to his vocal chords, anything that was so come from them was sure to be judgemental in some fashion. “What a pity, Hawkins seems a far better name.” He gave, trying to turn from her blood status; it was better off ignored if he was to learn if she had anything to do with this letter business he had earlier been embroiled in. It was certainly a name he knew, there was that Slytherin girl he had seen at the Slumber Party; who was a year older than him.
Her next statement answered his question quite clearly.
“Oh- Someone has been looking for me it seems. Or someone named Avery, in Slytherin. I wondered if that was you but, seems not.” He gave, inwardly thankful after her earlier admission. It stuck with him that she seemed to be proud of such, openly admitting it to him as if it was equal to getting onto the duelling team, becoming a prefect, or acing chain-casting at a tree…
“Oh uh. - No I don’t think I should cast at you.” He said, somewhat nervously that she had just offered herself up like that. There was something that stopped him from saying yes; probably because if they were caught he’d live with that black stain on his report forever, though he’d be lying to himself if it wasn’t at least a little tempting. “Do you know any spells then?” gave Avery, who ended that question with a slightly upward inflection which could tip her off that he had a follow up comment to make; one that would likely sting given the flash of cruelty in his eyes.

Alana hummed glancing at Avery the young fiery red haired girl seemed to not mind his tone, maybe due to the fact it really did not faze Alana after all she was very patient person. Her sea-foam teal eyes stared at Avery a grin forming on her face as she giggled slightly at Avery's statement.
"Hawkins is cooler, but Dibble is cool. It rhymes with many funny things. Though Alana Hawkins just sounds weird."
Alana spoke softly though she giggled slightly thinking her how funny it would have been if her mother had kept her maiden name. Alana stifled her giggles before glancing at the young boy in front of her. Alana's fiery red hair swayed with her movement slightly as the young girl seemed to still radiate her annoying amount of positivity. Where she received this much positivity the world may never know.
Alana tilted her head to the left hand side curiously the thought of a letter seemed a bit odd to the girl which is a lot sense Alana herself is a fairly odd child. The fiery red haired girl stared curiously at Avery a sweet hum escaping her throat as she smiled brightly.
"Than you must be very popular than I guess huh? Though if someone sent you a letter wonder if it is important. Though it may not be could be a prank rather weird though why write a letter when you can go up to the person you wish to speak to."
Alana softly spoke sweetly a bit confused and curious though Alana would agree everyone is different and tends to do things differently. Alana recalled her brother one time gave a girl a love letter. Alana always thought that was weird why write something down when you could just bluntly speak to the person though Alana also did not understand the reasoning to writing letters after all.
After hearing Avery decline her offer to let her be a practice dummy the young red haired girl rubbed the back of her head sheepishly after all the young girl has been practicing basic spells like Tarantellgra and Reparo though she still seemed a bit confused with those spells. It was not because she was not bright but because she rather read potions and handle history more then anything else.
"Well I have been practicing Tarantellgra, but I am not very good with charms or anything Potions is more of my forte honestly. Though I guess I should focus more on learning spells. I just find it rather boring, I don't really wish to hurt anyone."
Alana spoke softly she felt the young boy may snicker about her reasoning after all she would not blame him. Alana was to kind hearted for her own good she would rather be hurt then hurt others. Maybe that is why her family always seemed to keep her close afraid Alana would jump into a fire to save someone other then finding help. After all this young Gryffindor girl was just to nice though she also craved to learn more about what the world has to offer. Alana glanced up at the boy quietly smiling sweetly her sea-foam teal eyes still radiated pure joy, but the young girl seemed to brace herself she could tell he seemed to bite his tongue slightly she rather tread a bit carefully though she realized being honest may not have been the best option. Though Alana did not want to lie to the young boy either. Lies can not build a friendship after all.

┏ ┓-----S he hadn’t exactly taken the bait as he had expected she might, but she hadn’t saved herself either. Who in their right mind would admit that they’re better at potions than charms? He thought.
“Pursuant to your birth to a non-Hawkins or you just haven’t found the knack?” He asked carefully, though there was malign intent behind the question, he wasn’t sure she would catch it, let alone react to it; though this was a test to see if she was paying attention.
Unknown to him, he was parroting lines and dialogue he had heard from the many events and parties he had been dragged along to. Now that his older brothers had real jobs, it all fell to him to ‘show up’, and it crossed his mind that he needed to reign it in. He was being an arse, which was no different to the norm, but she seemed a kind girl; one that wasn’t the least bit threatening and by her own admission too.
“Fair enough I guess, we’re all different, and I suppose life wouldn’t be too interesting if we were all of a muchness.” He said, stowing his wand in his sleeve then and taking a small breath, relaxing a tad and trying to appear at least a little friendlier; even if she wasn’t a pureblood like he, until she said something truly stupid it didn’t warrant his vitriol.
“Popular? I wouldn’t say so.” He gave with a chuckle at that, as the sad reflection struck him harsher than any of his words had struck her, no doubt. “The letter confuses me still– well, still. I only got it a short while ago, from Raizel.” He corrected, mostly to himself. His head picked up and his dark eyes shifted to her again; “It’s not a concern of yours though. – You should really consider practising your spells. We’re nearly at the end of the year and whilst there’s no exams until our OWLs, I prefer to get ahead of the pack and stay there.” He nodded at her, speaking the truth.
He was quite unnerved by her constant smiling, and those green-blue eyes that seemed to be as scrupulous as his own; in their own way. Perhaps she wasn’t as naive as she would have him believe, perhaps she is the note-writer…┗ ┛

A Brisk Boy In A Brisk Field
Alana gazed towards Avery a slight hum escaping her lips as he spoke the question he spoke though may have had the intent to harm the young girl emotionally or mentally she stopped for a second. Hearing his question she thought with her lift index finger gently tapping her oval shaped chin her freckles popped out a bit, her sea-foam gazed seemed to be in a deep foggy thought. The young girl turned gaze back towards Avery, smiling a soft smile.
“Though I may not be a full Hawkins it does not define my knack for spells. I just am naturally horrible. A great learner yes but I find it quite difficult to focus and pay attention when it comes to spells. Maybe it is because I am terrified to hurt someone. Though I may not be a full Hawkins I am still a witch just as you are a Wizard. Maybe a half-blood, but does that really make us all that different. Our blood status does not Define us Avery. It helps us to realize not everyone is the same blood status wise, but we are all the same even if you don’t quite see it or understand it.”
Alana spoke softly with a quite intelligent tone to her words. Though this May not have been the answer the young boy was looking for this was the best answer Alana could come up with. She understood not everyone is alike and most wizards and witches think differently then she does. While Alana looks on the bright side of life others look at the dismal and dismay of life. As the wind nipped gently at Alana fiery locks the young continued to gaze softly at Avery. The young hoped to achieve friendship, but would respect his wishes if he did not want to befriend a Half-Blood witch after all it was his choice and his standards.
Though when Avery spoke up once again the young girls ears perked at the mention of her friends name. Alana beamed ever so brightly her pearly white teeth showing as her sea-foam blue eyes sparkled similar to the nights sky. Alana clapped her hands together like an excited child her fiery locks bounced with her movement as she continued beaming ever so brightly like a star.
“Raizel had a letter?! They did not even tell me about it? That is really interesting. They never mentioned it. Kind of disappointing though, oh well I’ll ask Raizel about it later in the commons.”
Alana spoke nonchalantly though the young Gryffindor was ever so curious and respected Avery enough to know it was not her place to pry into his business. When Avery mentioned the O.W.L’s Alana hummed softly. Though she was prepared for the essay and handwritten part, casting the spells is a different story. Maybe it was, because Alana did not understand well because of the way her thought process was. Even though the young girl was bright, casting was a different story. Maybe it was because of the pressure she felt when she had to cast a spell.
Gazing up softly at Avery Alana sheepishly grinned her fiery locks blew gently in the frigid chilly air. Her sea-foam blue eyes reflected an unknown happiness that not many felt anymore. Though Alana was a strange specimen she was just that she was Alana and nobody could change her thought process.
“The writing portion I have done though casting it’s just difficult. I don't quite understand it, because maybe my thought process is different and I am afraid of hurting others honestly. I could not bare the thought of hurting someone even by accident. Maybe it’s because I am too kind, but even the meanest people don’t deserve to get hurt by accident because of someone like me who just doesn't quite understand. I don’t expect you to understand. But it’s okay. I just gotta practice. Maybe one of my friends will help though that also seems a bit terrifying if I ended up accidentally hurting them in the process.”
Alana spoke softly and the young girl did not understand why she poured out how she felt to Avery. The young boy seemed not to be fond of her. Though Alana did feel like it was okay to speak though. She did not want to fear someone just because of how their views were. She knew better than that. Alana gently gazed back up at Avery her sea-foam eyes held a soft gaze like a bunny that was just ever so curious. Alana awaited quietly to hear Avery make a smart or snarky comment, but the young girl braced herself she wanted to be prepared. After all she had to be prepared.

┏ ┓-----W ith her response, came Avery’s surprise.
Oddly, he found that he actually admired the manner in which she had retorted, she had taken the upper hand. Though she hadn’t done what most would, and rise above, or reply in kind which would have made things interesting, she had instead taken the time to demonstrate a willingness to be vulnerable, and share the feelings that Avery suspected to be true.
Where he had posed the question with an intent to provoke something out of her, or undermine her, the fair girl had responded with a level of thoughtfulness that had caught him off guard. Typically, he wouldn’t care for kindness; it was a weak emotion that couldn’t be used to power the eternally hungry engine for growth that was his mind. However, in this instance, it didn’t appear as naivety; rather a strange contraption within her that functioned as his did; but could be fuelled by kindness. He saw it ignite in her teal-blue eyes, and it was something he found a fondness for; which was jealousy in a mask.
Avery had taken care in noting every nuance of her expression and inflection, trying to find chinks in the carapace of kindness that she was now wearing as a breastplate. He could never, it just wasn’t him; but that didn’t mean it was something he couldn’t appreciate. Whilst they clearly had differences in blood, and class, and peer group and he suspected a whole lot more; he could appreciate that not everyone would share his view, his goals and objectives, and she was the first whom he felt would reach hers even if she had a different method than he.
In his assessment, he couldn’t find the chinks he had hoped for; and he wouldn’t reduce her just to blood. He wasn’t far above that, but he was above such levels of twisted belief. Every word of hers was measured, deliberate and he felt like it reflected a keen awareness of her own abilities; like she wasn’t letting on much about her spell-casting purposefully. Perhaps she was modest, perhaps she had something to hide; was she the note-maker?
“Raizel did. We met each other on the train here, perhaps she wanted to keep it private; though do you like to know other peoples’ business?” He didn’t address her earlier statements, instead electing for the slight change of topic.
“Anyway. Practice makes perfect, they say. I prefer practicing against people, but when I can’t find volunteers as willing as you, this tree usually suffices. Though, I am sure I would get told off if I were to take you up on your offer. – Spell casting is, to me, the most important part about being a wizard. The rest of it doesn’t nearly matter as much.” He gave then, offering a small window into his mind.
His attitude had changed a fair bit, though he was still reserved as to getting close with the girl. She was so sweet it was sickly, and almost certainly some kind of exaggeration.

A Brisk Boy In A Brisk Field
Alana hummed softly gazing softly up at Avery the young fiery red haired girl smiled slightly as she pulled her Gryffindor scarf closer to her cheeks hiding her lower half of her face. The crisp chilly air nipped softly at Alana's ears making them a light red color. Her fiery red hair seemed to sway slightly in this crisp breeze. The young girl's sea-foam blue eyes stared up at Avery curiously though he asked her if she enjoyed being in other people's business' the young girl honestly was just curious after all that was just who she is.
"I apologize I know it is none of my business' just curious that all though I should not be after all as you said it is none of my business'."
Alana smiled sheepishly her shoulders moving upwards slightly as the young girl continued to gaze at Avery curiously. Though it was none of her business' she was curious after all that just who she is. Alana scanned Avery with her sea-foam eyes her eyes seemed as bright as an ocean with the sun reflecting off of it. The young fiery red haired girl was unsure what to say or speak about. She did not wish to bother or upset Avery. For some reason even though he seemed like the type to not like anyone and thinks highly of himself Alana wanted to befriend him to prove to him that not all Half-bloods are all bad that it is not about blood status. When he spoke about practicing the young girl looked at him curiously.
"I understand you may not want to practice on me. Plus I don't know many spells or any, but I am willing to help. Maybe I could throw things in the air to help with a moving target. If that makes any sense at all. Or maybe not you do seem like the type who rather have no help. But you seem really amazing with those spells. I bet you be really great at dueling!"
Alana grinned happily clapping her hands happily starring at Avery with a radiating pure joy look. Her fiery locks swayed like an oceans waves as the young girl smiled sweetly at Avery. Though he may decline her offer she figured why not what was the harm in offering in throwing random objects in the air for the young boy to maybe practice on. After all what is better then a moving target right and it does not have to be the girl. Alana thought it was pure genius! Her sea-foam blue eyes continued to sparkle with joy more then anything.
