After supper.
Some dreaded Mondays but for Simon Kincaid, they were usually a day of solitude. It seemed even the professors wanted to ease into the work week and gave a limited amount of assignments and when they did so, they were often pretty easy to answer. This particular Monday proved that to be correct and he had just completed his History of Magic questions using only his textbook and not needing to look up any additional information from the wealth of information on the bookshelves of the school Library.
Simon put the lid back on his ink and then opened his bag to store his quill away. "Looks like we really didn't need to come to the Library this evening, afterall, Rascal," he said as he looked into the large open part of his messenger bag. He waited a moment for a gray rat to pop up his little head only - nothing. He reached inside and took hold of the Hufflepuff scarft that his pet liked to cuddle up inside and realized that there was nothing but the scarf, resting ontop of some of his books and other belongings.
"Rascal!" he hissed out in a loud whisper. Oh where did that rat go? The last thing he needed was to be kicked out of the Library for letting an animal loose when he loved the Library and spent a good deal of his free time there!
He looked around, scanning the floor and lower bookcases when he saw quick movements from over near a grouping of wooden tables near the Herbology section. He quickly stood up and began his way over there, trying to play it cool but once he got close enough, he went for a diving catch. It might have appeared that he had just fallen, but it did create some noise and Simon looked around to those nearby. "Sorry. My apologies. Didn't mean to disrupt anyone."

Kim didn't mind any days of the week. Well, that wasn't true. He usually abhorred Tuesdays and Thursdays for one specific reason. Flying class was on those days, unless the weather was bad and then sometimes it got rescheduled. Whatever day it got rescheduled to was the day that he would hate. Sometimes it was so bad he ended up trying to avoid going to the class altogether. He wasn't a delinquent and didn't tend do it to make the teacher mad on purpose.
But flying...
Yes.
Not for him. It just wasn't happening, that was for sure.
And guess what.
Tomorrow was Tuesday.
Save me. Kim thought to himself and wondered how he was going to get through it this time around. Maybe he should check himself into the hospital wing at the time of the class.
He could pretend something was wrong with his neck or head, one of those two. Maybe both! Whoever was on duty at the time could give him a quick check-up and then afterward Kim could say he was feeling better and leave. Most of the time Kim didn't tend to avoid a problem and liked to tackle things head-on. But flying was a different matter altogether. He couldn't deal with it and wasn't about to even try, not after the fiasco of his first flying class lesson.
Kim didn't want to think about it.
He reached out and took some roast beef, mashed potatoes and carrots.
The food at Hogwarts was really tasty and the elves who made the meals were quite talented. Kim started to eat, adding some butter and pouring some gravy onto his food to make the flavors better. He drank some iced pumpkin juice and added a custard tart to his plate. It was kind of like a ritual for him, every time he sat down to eat if he saw custard tarts around, he'd always take one. Kim didn't want this night to end and it wasn't because of the delicious food.
...it was because it would cease being Monday night when he woke up and he wasn't ready for that to happen. A sigh escaped his lips and Kim rose from his seat, having finished his dinner, and slowly walked back towards the dorms. He'd already finished his homework for Monday's classes and really had nothing to do until curfew at 9PM. Part of him wondered if he should take the opportunity to explore the castle some more. It might be worth it in the end for him.
He debated.
Maybe if he broke some rules, he'd get sent to detention and not be able to make it to class.
But at the same time, what if he had to do detention AFTER classes? That would be worse. Kim made a face and paused on his way back to the dorms.
Why was he going back there now? What the hell, he'd go explore the castle and amuse himself in the process. It was only a little after 7PM, the night was young. As Kim meandered around, having no real destination in mind, he found himself in front of the heavy oak doors that led into the library, where the books lived. He pushed open the doors and went inside, closing them behind him. Glancing around, Kim spotted a boy sitting a short distance away.
He appeared to have misplaced something, judging from his actions. Kim raised a brow, curious. What exactly had he lost that he was acting like that? Could he possibly be looking for someone? But if that was the case, why would he be looking near the floor? Kim continued to watch him, until the boy finally stood up and made his way towards the Herbology section. Intrigued, Kim decided to follow him. At least he'd found something fun to occupy his time.
It was better than letting his thoughts stew.
Upon reaching the section, he was just in time to see Simon dive forward.
Kim's lips twitched and he tried not to laugh but that dive had been pretty awesome. As the boy apologized for the noise, Kim crouched down next to the Hufflepuff and let his eyes flicker over him. "That was an impressive dive. You practicing for a swimming event?" He teased and then shook his head. "But all jokes aside, what are you looking for? Did you find it?" That was the real question. If he'd found it already, it would be such a shame.
Why?
Because then the fun and excitement would be over and he'd have to go back to stewing.

Lost and found with @Kim Sato
Simon sat up slowly, rather annoyed by that rat of his at the moment but still did smile when the Gryffindor complimented his dive and spoke of joining a swim team. "Well, I found him, I just can't catch him." And that was most frustrating. It would be for any pet owner who couldn't get their pet in line, but especially for a dhampir who was supposed to have super fast reflexes and yet here was a mouse, with a brain no bigger than a pea, who was outsmarting him.
"My rat. He's...a right pain in the ass sometimes," Simon muttered and didn't know a better way to put it. "Almost always he'll just chill. He's a chill rat. Great guy. Other times...rare times, he'll just take off like he's looking for adventure and he heads out on the highway." Simon was loosely quoting the song Born to be Wild by a muggle group Steppenwolf but he didn't know if the other student would get it.
"It can be quite frustrating. I don't know if he just wants to go exploring or if he's trying to get away from me or maybe he's trying to find his other owner," and at that his conversation sort of faltered and Simon lost more words for the moment. He had lost a dear friend when Rascal had lost his owner and he knew that they both still felt that pain.

As the boy informed him that he'd found his rat but couldn't catch him, Kim nodded.
He wore a silver layered necklace and a black leather jacket with the words Sweet and Dreams going down the sides of the arms. I'm changing the type of shirt he's wearing in the picture and also removing the bottle cap and changing one of the words to 'sweet' to compliment the 'dreams' word. A black shirt with smoke-like designs on the front could be seen beneath the jacket and a pair of black pants completed the outfit. It looked great on him.
The tall boy was also sporting some really nice blue hair for this month.
Kim wasn't entirely sure what he thought of the color.
But even if it didn't suit him, tomorrow was the start of a new month and a new hair color!
"Rats do tend to move fast, but if he's yours why doesn't he come when you call him?" Kim asked, curious. Didn't pets listen to their masters? Unless, this rat was a new pet and the boy hadn't been able to make a connection with it yet. The way the boy described his rat made Kim smirk, it sounded like an awesome rat. "Oh, I see. A chill rat. I love chill rats." He commented with a grin, kind of teasing him a little. But in a rather nice manner.
Unfortunately, Simon's words about the 'highway' were lost on Kim, as he didn't tend to listen to muggle music often. Actually, the only muggle thing he tended to do research on all the time was anything having to do with sweets or food in general. As Simon continued to tell him about his feelings on his rat, Kim listened without saying a single word to him. He much preferred this method because people tended to talk a lot when they were the ones talking.
But then Simon stopped talking and Kim regarded him.
"Other owner? Did he have another one before you?" Kim asked, curious.

Showing how clueless he is with rats to @Kim Sato
"Yea, one of my best friends, Alexa Mackenzie," he began and looked to the Gryffindor. He probably needed to elaborate more. Unfortunately, it seemed most didn't know the girl even though she had been one of the best students that came to Hogwarts. "She was a year older than me, but a fellow Hufflepuff. We met before my first year and she helped me in Diagon Alley to find my supplies. She passed away over the Winter Holiday."
Simon got silent for a brief moment as he thought of the unfortunate situation, what was lost to the world, what was lost to himself. He let it set in a moment before snapping back to reality here. "Rascal loved her so dearly. He tolerates me, you know? But it's not the same." As the two walked to the library, a book fell and he looked up to see the beady eyed small gray rat staring down at them. "Rascal. Come on, man." He wasn't going to quickly reach for the thing and spill over an entire book case onto the floor. He couldn't get himself kicked out of the Library. It was one of his favorite places to be in the castle.
But it seemed the rat wanted to play a game in which it's human companions didn't want to engage in.

So she wasn't at the castle. But worse than that was that not only was she not at Hogwarts, but she wasn't even in the realm of the living anymore. That was pretty deep and Kim's lips pursed a little. He could say sorry but what did that do? It wouldn't bring her back and since he didn't know her, it might seem like a rather empty emotion. "Ah, I see. Well, she'll probably be happy that you took over looking after Rascal!" Kim said, trying to look on the bright side of things. "Eventually, he'll come to love you as well." Or so he hoped for Simon's sake. "Ah, forgot introductions. Kim Aoki. You are?" Kim asked as he regarded Simon for a moment with clear blue eyes. That was when a book dropped off a shelf and they both looked up to see a pair of beady eyes staring down at them from between two books. Rascal. Quite a fitting name. A faint smile came to Kim's lips. He loved all types of animals, regardless of what they were. As long as they weren't cats, he loved being around them. "Rascal! Want to play a little? Hop down!" Kim said as he cupped his hands together in case Rascal wanted to jump down a little. It would be cute if Rascal decided to do so. After all, ferrets were really cute. How could someone not like them? They were adorable creatures! ────────────────────── ㅤ ㅤ──────────────────────

Almost murdered with @Kim Sato
The rat blinked. Blinked! Simon stared up at it unenthusiastically because it was as if the small creature knew exactly what he was doing. "I'm not giving you more food, mate. You had a snack before we left the dorm and then I gave you a treat when we first got here." The head of the rat seemed to tilt at the word treat. "No! I gave you one, and look how you repay me!" Yes, he was arguing with a rat.
Rascal's attention seemed to focus on the Gryffindor who had hands outstretched up toward them. It still didn't move though, just looked now in his direction as opposed to its owner. Rodents - they could be so skiddish one moment and then completely frozen still the next.
"Oy! See? He's stubborn," Simon said with a sigh and then turned to focus his attention on the one that was offering his help. Maybe it was useless. Simon was no seer, but he anticipated this would end whenever he would pull out another treat from his bag for the rat. "I"m Simon, Simon Kincaid. Thanks for trying to help me with the most strong-willed rat in all of Hogwarts. Maybe the entire United Kingdom!"
"Sorry if I kept you from Herbology," Simon noted that Kim was toward the Herbology section of the Library before he went on this rat chase with him. "The subject seems to either fascinate or bore, no in between. What are your thoughts on it?" It was no sooner than he said the words when a two books fell quickly, one after the other, one almost nearly hitting Kim and the other Simon.
"Now you're going for attempted murder?!" he said as he looked up to the rat. Maybe it was time to devise a plan....

But Rascal was incredibly cute! He watched as Rascal and Simon had a little staring contest go on. Personally, Kim thought Rascal would end up winning this particular battle between them. As Simon mentioned 'treat' Kim couldn't help but smirk. Oh, he'd gone and done it now! He'd mentioned the word! Just as he'd expected, Rascal's head tilted at the word. The rat suddenly turned his attention to him as Kim spoke to it and almost seemed to freeze. How adorable! As Simon spoke again, Kim continued to stare at Rascal, not letting his eyes move from the rat. "Maybe he just needs a treat to come down!" Kim said. He smirked up at the ferret. "Is that what you want, Rascal? You want a treat? Come down and you can have a treat!" Kim said, trying to wheedle Rascal into believing him. As Simon introduced himself, the blue haired boy nodded. The boy's words about Herbology made Kim's head tilt to the side, just as Rascal's had earlier. "Herbology? How did you know I like that class?" He asked, unaware that the Herbology section was nearby. As the conversation directed itself towards the subject, Kim thought for a bit. What were his thoughts on Herbology? "I like Herbology but I've always liked herbs and plants. Scents are one of the best things." "Vanilla and lavender are my favorites." Kim told him. "What about it could bore you?" He asked, curious to know more about this Simon Kincaid. The name sounded a little familiar for some reason. Perhaps he'd heard it in passing around the castle? Or maybe he'd come across the name somewhere else... Before he could figure it out, a book fell off the shelf and then another one. The first came close to hitting Kim and the second had targeted Simon. The one responsible? Of course, Rascal was the culprit in this case. "Maybe we should come at him from two different sides. No escape route for him then!" Kim suggested and glanced over at Simon to see what he thought of the idea. |

A new approach with @Kim Sato
"The scents, huh? I never really thought about that," Simon said. Often, some scents would make him think of cooking and cooking meant food - which Simon wasn't much of a fan of. That, or heavy scents made him think of some of the ladies at church that slathered on far too much perfume and again, he wasn't much of a fan. Maybe it had something to do with being a dhampir, and the smells being a little stronger for him. Maybe not.
"But yea, not a bore at all. It's amazing what plants can do, magical and not. So many different healing properties and all..." and he looked up to the gray rat as it peeked over the top of the bookcase to see if they were still down below and just blinked its beady little eyes at them, all innocent like.
"I've tried treats, even his favorites. He's not so good with bribes. I think we need to do the sneak attack approach. I'll come in from the left, you come in from the right." And Simon immediately began walking backwards to get to where he needed to be to come in from his direction. Hopefully this would work and they'd capture the pest - all without destroying the Library in the process. This was probably going to be the last time he brought Rascal along! This was ridiculous!

Scents were one of the best things about Herbology and the main reason why Kim liked it so much. Well, the plants and herbs were also really pretty on the eyes too. "You've never thought about it? What do you think of vanilla and lavender scents?" Kim asked, wondering if they were of interest to him. Or if he preferred other scents. Everyone had a preference for scents, even if they weren't aware of this. Simon spoke of how he appreciated what some plants and herbs could do when it came to their healing properties. Ah, so he was someone who liked them because of this reason? No, not liked, appreciated them... There was a difference. As Simon agreed with his idea, Kim nodded and headed off to his section. He waited for Simon to catch Rascal's attention and then came in from the right side. Part of him wondered if they should enlist one more person to help them out. Or just block off the back section so Rascal couldn't end up going backward. Maybe he'd do that quick, as Rascal's attention seemed to currently be on Simon. He had some time. Kim quickly added more books behind the rat and then circled around from the right side again. Now if Rascal tried to back up, he'd run into a pile of books in his way. As a result, he would be required to either go to the left or right to escape from the two of them. Which meant, he'd run into either Simon's or Kim's hands and end up getting caught in the end. That in turn spelled out success for Simon and Kim. Idly, Kim wondered what Simon had been doing in the library. After all, he probably hadn't just come in there with Rascal for no reason. Could he have been searching for a book? Or looked for a quiet place to do his homework? Kim would probably ask him later once they caught Rascal, just because he was curious. But then again, Simon might want to leave with Rascal once he was caught, just to ensure he wouldn't escape from him a second time. Kim already knew his name, so he could just send him an owl sometime later if he wanted to talk to him. For now, they just needed to catch Rascal... He truly lived up to his name. |
