A Short Break
Arithmancy class was definitely something else, and not in a good way. Jakob was bored out of his mind and drained of nearly all of his thinking power. Every second seemed hours and hours in between. He counted down in his head, waiting impatiently for the end of the class. He could tell his fellow classmates were beginning to feel tired as well, a few of them, reckless. A few had nearly fallen asleep. It was the last class of a long, exhausting day. When it had finally come the time to leave, Jakob intended to rush out of the classroom and back to the boys' dorm and crash down into his bed for a quick nap before dinner. However, when he finally exited the classroom about ten minutes later, the thought of his bed didn't appeal to him as it did moments before. It was cool outside today and he thought maybe strolling outside through the grounds would be plenty good for him. He hadn't seen the Great Lake up close yet. Maybe he could chance an encounter with the giant squid that lived there. It didn't necessarily matter to him. All he wanted was some fresh air and a temporary escape from the stress of his classes.
When Jakob exited the castle, he strode out onto the grounds and turned around for a glance at the castle. He had examined its exterior from the outside only once before: on his way up to the castle after the exciting and eventful ride on the Hogwarts Express. Then, it was nighttime. The sun was still up at this time of day, and the castle looked different bathing in sunlight than it did at night. Its high towers loomed over the grounds, its expansiveness impressive and awesome. He turned and continued for the Great Lake.
As soon as Jakob arrived at the lake, he found a nearby tree and sat in front of it, throwing his school bag haphazardly beside him. It wasn't the most comfortable thing to prop himself up against, but it was enough for him to relax a little. He sat there, gazing at the lake, the reflection of light from the sun making the water shimmer. He thought about pulling out a book but told himself not to. This was a chance to relax and enjoy himself. A chance to forget about all of his stressors and worries. A chance to let it all go.
Temporarily, of course. Eventually, and probably sooner than he wanted, he'd be forced to go back to school and attend more of his classes. At least tomorrow's schedule was full of some of his favorite classes. Potions were one he was looking forward to. Jakob tried to force the thought out of his mind all of a sudden, as he had remembered that Hufflepuff was sharing Potions class tomorrow with the Slytherins. He despised Slytherin. They were all jerks, in his opinion. A lot of them, anyway. Some of them were decent human beings. Most of them were rich and spoiled, and they gloated about it like no other. They also thought Hufflepuffs were a bunch of dudders. "Yeah, we'll show them otherwise. Money can't buy academic skills and the ability to work hard." He said out loud to himself. "And if anyone knows what it's like to have to work hard to get what you want, it's probably us."

A Short Break
Ivy was absolutely exhausted after her last class of the day. She thought she would be able to escape from math at Hogwarts but nope. Like her year 2 teacher told her, “math is in everything “ even in magic Ivy thought.
She was walking down the hall and really was looking forward to going back to her dormitory for a nice cup of tea, when a strange thought hit her. Maybe she could go to the Great Lake. She was always up for a day of searching for the giant squid. But today she was going to actually find it. She would climb a tree- wait, was that allowed? She sighed. Probably not she thought. But nevertheless, she was ready for a quiet day at the lake. She headed towards her favorite spot; a nice shady area under a tree with a great view of the- Ivy stopped in her tracks. Someone was at her tree.
She was quite choosy about where she sat, and hated it when people stole her seat. Alas, this kid- probably a first year Hufflepuff like her- didn’t know that. Ivy wasn’t one for conflict though. So she would handle this quietly, calmly, and if push comes to shove, find a new tree. And she was NOT getting a new tree. Maybe she could share the tree. (Or maybe make a friend.)

Of course being a Hufflepuff meant she had to fight harder for what she wanted and work harder for everything. Plus having to deal with being the “worst house”. She was tired of all the hate.
She finally found herself at the tree, standing right above the boy. “Hello. That’s my tree.” She was going to say. Instead she said: “um. I usually sit here. And you’re here. Can I sit here too. Please. Thanks.” She probably sounded like a total idiot but she wasn’t good at talking to people. So she probably just sounded normal.

A Short Break
Jakob noticed the girl slowly approaching him out of the corner of his eye. She stopped about a foot away and looked down at him. When she spoke, it sounded almost as if she were nervous, but there was determination behind that nervousness. A goal. “um. I usually sit here. And you’re here. Can I sit here too? Please. Thanks.” She sat down next to him, setting her bag down gently beside her. "Um- Oh, okay." Jakob scooted hastily out of the way to give her more space. He looked at this new stranger. She was white with shoulder-length brown hair. Her eyes were a bright blue. Her appearance here was rather sudden and unexpected. He had seen other people walking by over the twenty minutes he had been sitting here, but no one had approached him or talked to him. He got a few weird glances from a group of Slytherins, but that wasn't very unusual for a Hufflepuff.
"So... How's it going? You look tired. I know I sure am. I just escaped Arithmancy about half an hour ago. Who knew we had to continue studying math at a school that literally teaches children wizardry and witchcraft, and all this magic?"

A Short Break
Ivy sat next to the boy and watched the lake. It was nice and peaceful. The boy was around her height but a little shorter. He had messy Maroon hair and blue eyes. He was definitely her age and Hufflepuff as well. She sat there in silence until he finally spoke.
“so… how’s it going?you look tired. I know I sure am. I just escaped arithmancy about half an hour ago. Who knew we had to continue studying math at a school that literally teaches children wizardry and witchcraft and all this magic?” he said. “I just got out of arithmancy as well. I’ve always hated math, and I thought I could escape but nope.” She said in agreement. She thought a minute. “I wonder if the class is right though. Because basically it’s teaching us the magical properties of numbers. I mean, I never would have believed it a few years ago, but I’m a witch, so who’s to say that numbers aren’t magical?” She waited for his answer.
They sat in silence a few minutes while watching the lake carefully. It was a pleasant day, but unfortunately, there was no sign of the squid. As Ivy sat next to the boy, she wondered if they would become friends. She’d never had any friends back home since Gretel always stole them or pushed them away from her with lies and rumors. This kid seemed friendly, at least. They sat a little while as the clouds moved over the lake and swirled into interesting shapes. Several students walked past the lake and past them, giving odd looks. But it was honestly normal. They were both Hufflepuffs. Ivy watched the lake, hoping that the giant squid would appear.

Ivy listened to Jakobs explaination of arithamancy. She nodded her head in agreement. She listened to him talk a little until he finally introduced himself. "I'm Jakob, by the way. Jakob Hall." She was about to introduce herself as well but he kept talking. "You're a Hufflepuff too, right? Do you come out here reguarly? I've never been out on the grounds for long stretches of time, except for Herbology. That's not a bad class. She waited a moment before speaking, in case he started talking again. "I'm Ivy Evans. Nice to meet you as well. I'm in Hufflepuff, yes. I come out here all the time. In fact-" she said, patting the tree. "this is my thinking spot. I call her Cheryl. Cheryl the tree. I know it's weird to name a tree but, hey. It's a just tree. I'm not naming my bag." She realized she was probably talking too much. "Erm, yeah. So... I come out here alot. I don't have many friends." She admitted, embarrassed. "I've never been good at making them." and Gretel stole them from her, but she didn't say that. "I also come here to read." She said, changing the subject. "I really like comic books and muggle novels. Especially the classics. I absolutely love Jane Austen novels." She stopped talking, fearing she'd scare him off. So she just sat there quietly, waiting for his reply. She watched the lake as the water swirled around. Was the squid there? She really wanted to see the squid.

Did Jakob hear her right? He thought so. "I really like comic books and muggle novels. Especially the classics. I absolutely love Jane Austen's novels." She had said.
"Really? That's awesome! I love comic books as well. I brought a few with me from my home, actually." He scrambled for his bag and reached inside. He ruffled through the contents for a minute when he found what he was looking for. He pulled out a small stack of comics.
"I've got an old 'Punisher' comic, four volumes of 'Darth Vader 2017,' and the first issue of 'Iron Man 2020.' I've heard of Jane Austen, I think. She wrote a novel called 'Pride and Prejudice . I don't know, though. I'm not a big fan of romance stories. I've made two exceptions, though: Have you ever read 'There's Someone Inside Your House' by Stephanie Perkins? Or 'These Shallow Graves' by Jennifer Donnelly? They have a lot of romance, but they're also crime thrillers.
'There's Someone Inside Your House' is about a girl called Makani who moved from Hawaii to Nebraska. She has an ex-boyfriend named Oliver if I can remember his name correctly. Well, anyway, people start being murdered at her high school and she basically is just trying to, y'know, not get murdered. I'm not going to spoil it, but there's definitely a lot of romance, as well as a lot of action, and it's one of my all-time favorite books.
'These Shallow Graves' is set in Victorian New York. Jo Montfort is the main character. Her father is found dead in his study and the police rule it out as an accidental death, but Jo thinks there is more to the story. Meanwhile, her family wants to marry her off to a rich friend of hers, and she likes him, but she doesn't love him. Not as much as she comes to love a reporter for her father's newspaper, whose name is Eddie. They both set out to find out the truth behind Jo's father's death. Again, a lot of romance, and a lot of action. It's another one of my favorite books. I would recommend them to anyone who likes romance, crime, or both. They are truly the best of both worlds. I don't think the Hogwarts library would have them, but you could totally find them in a Muggle library or bookshop. You should check them out sometime."

“Really? That’s awesome!I love comic books as well. I brought a few with me from home, actually.”Ivy was surprised that he liked comics too. He continued talking and Ivy waited for him to finish before replying. “Oh! I absolutely love crime and mystery novels! They both sound good! I’ve always wanted to read “the punisher” but my dad was all like “iT’s NoT ApPrOpiATe””she said, mimiming her dads voice. “my favorite comics are “Squirrel Girl”, “Ms Marvel”, but the Kamala Khan version. Squirrel girl is hilarious. Well, the newer ones are. ” she paused a minute. “I guess I’ve been rambling too. Most people I know don’t like comics. Or they haven’t heard of them. Now people read trendy romance novels. Or, at least the kids at my old school did.” she looked at the lake again. “I really wanna see the squid.” she said quietly. “The squid seems so cool. I’ve always wanted to read “the punisher” but my dad was all like “iT’s NoT ApPrOpiATe. Jakob laughed at what he supposed was an imitation of her father's voice. He handed her the 'Punisher' comic. "You can borrow this if you want to read it. There's nothing in it you wouldn't find in any other Marvel comic book. Just a bunch of flying bullets. It's a good read. I've never heard of Squirrel Girl. I'll see if I can find a few issues over the summer. Also, I don't care if you ramble. I like listening to people and learning about their opinions.
Especially if their opinions oppose my own. I like seeing things from others' perspectives."

I've also been spit on by an alpaca at a petting zoo. I was holding food in my hand, and I guess he was being impatient about being fed. As soon as it happened, my sister Hannah kind of backed up a bit. She told me that if she were me, she wouldn't have fed that thing, but I did. I'd already spent money to buy the food, and I wasn't going to let it go to waste.

A Short Break
“I have a dog too. She’s a Rottweiler. I love her. I actually have had an interesting animal encounter. I was at an apple orchard and there was a dog. It had long fur and I couldn’t find its collar. I thought it was a stray so I named it Stella. I was walking around with her when these two kids came up to me to pet the dog. I asked them if they knew the dog, and they said that it was the owner of the orchards dog. I asked its name. Guess what it’s name was.” Ivy paused for dramatic emphasis. ”STELLA. The dogs name was Stella. It was when I was little. I guess it could have been my first instance of magic but probably not. My actual first instance of magic was setting my sisters hair on fire.” she chuckled. She looked at the punisher comic that was in her hands. “My dad wouldn’t mind the violence. I mean, he lets me watch true crime documentaries all the time. It’s gotta be a certain issue.” she said. “And squirrel girl is awesome. Hilarious. There’s this one comic where her roommate is in Asgard and she happens to have a comic called “cat Thor” and then Loki turns to cat Thor and there’s a huge pancake and waffle debate where- sorry. Spoilers. Anyway, what’s your favorite comic?”
