Marina flew past several obstacles unfazed. Marina wondered if she was actually improving or if it was all just luck, since she was used to only going through a couple of obstacles before getting caught in one. Eventually, her streak came to an end and she got caught in vines. Marina glanced around looking for Hufflepuffs. She hoped they wouldn’t attack her.

Murphy's Law: Anything that can go wrong will go wrong. Every now and then, the idea would arise. This had been one of those times. Okay, not everything that could have gone wrong went wrong, but there were a few unideal and very unfortunate events that took place in the matter of a few seconds. Namely an explosion; and of course, there was the matter of being sent up into the air and off the track. The latter was nothing to worry about, and more advantageous than it appeared. The explosion however... that wasn't okay. It did far more damage than it ever should have.

As seen when Nick, limp and looking relatively lifeless, curled from his broom in a stonelike plummet. His destination: the ground below.

Xailah had seen explosions before- first hand on an unfortunate train ride- and she knew that they didn't just happen- not in a semi-controlled environment such as a race track. It didn't take a genius to figure out someone from Hufflepuff had sent over a mean and very illegal spell. The metamorph wasn't the sort to get miffed over rule breaks, hell, what even were rules? She was, however, not someone who turned a blind eye to something that could have long-term consequences against a housemate- or anyone for that matter. She had seen Bombarda used to blow holes in buildings- a spell like that should never be used at or around anything living. To be completely frank, she was disappointed Hufflepuff would even think to go to such an extreme.

But-

Gryffindor had an ace up their sleeve- a little one named Marina Oriel. While shrapnel and tree bark spattered like buckshot around the smattered Gryffindor team, Nick had found a moment (prior to his inevitable descent) to send the smallest of the cubs flying forward, in a final effort to gain some headway. Best of luck, Xailah silently wished, as she watched the little lioness fade into nothing more than a small dot advancing toward the horizon. Marina sure as hell was going to need it a lot more than the sixth year did.

In one smooth series of motions, the giant managed to jump back on his broom, fly up and meet up with Della, who was fast approaching. Without as much as a word, he instinctively reached out and grabbed her by the arm. With as much strength and momentum he could muster, he managed to propel the younger lioness forward. Pleased with himself, a smirk slid open wide across his face.

Not for long, though. In the distance, he could hear what was undoubtedly an explosion. Staying mid-air with a perplexed look on his face, Hugh needed a second to come to his senses. Had someone cast an explosive spell during the race? Who in their right mind would do such a mad thing? Surely it hadn't been a lion, they hadn't practised any of that sort of reckless behaviour. This time his face grew sour in dismay. Either his own house had been stupid or Hufflepuff was growing desperate... too desperate in his mind. He failed to hide his disappointment either way.

This was not going to plan at all. Jack could overcome the pain of these races, yet the fact of losing he could not: damn magic chickens and fire and such. There was only hope that he could grit his teeth and push forward blindly into the unknown. let us hope for the best.

Della felt a strong but familiar arm grab her. And the next thing she knew, she was flying faster than ever. This didn't surprise her in the least. They spent a lot of time practicing throwing each other around. Hugh took the shot, and his instincts were right—there needed to be more lions at the front of the pack.

But only a split second later, a something hard hit Della's head. So that's what that felt like. Her temple throbbed and her vision blinded—she had no time to think where it came from—she was now whizzing through the course. Unable to get control of her broom, she found herself covered in snow and face-to-face with a cockatrice. But she as regained her grip, even though her reaction time was sluggish, she was still ready to keep fighting.

What possessed her to cast the spell that she chose to do is beyond reason. Perhaps it was George's determination to win, by any means necessary. Perhaps it was Jack's enthusiasm that had rubbed off on her. Or perhaps, she had just faltered for a moment and just panicked. Hell, it might have been something else entirely. Why she did it was not something that could be answered easily but the fact remains that, in that very moment, she cast one of the illegal spells and tried to take out a part of the course - or any players in it. She sighed softly as she tilted her head down, riding through the wind as fast as possible.

Did she actually hit anyone? She had no idea. She did not want to know. She had aimed for the environment, not the people, so there was hope that no one suffered from the backlash of her attack but... the truth was that they probably did.

This was not very like her - getting caught up in the heat of the race or acting in a way that intentionally hurt others. However, perhaps it was appropriate for someone who kept getting caught in the heat of a full-fledged battle. After what they had been through, getting past a few illegal spells was probably easy for any of the people in this race right now.

This slender Scots Pine would make a fine Christmas Tree but this tree was modified with purpose. A metallic framed seat complete with windshield and stirrups has been added at the back, serving as the tree's counterweight. This sturdy, reliable tree that will definitely get the job done.

Speed: Top Speed is 6, however when you reach a speed of 6 this increases to a 10% chance that you will auto miss (with anything requiring an accuracy roll) and you will be auto-hit (with anything requiring a dodge roll).

This broom is intended to carry multiple people. When someone uses the catch option to rescue a falling teammate, they can catch one additional teammate in a given round. This broom can carry up to four users. If the user has the ability Catch then a user can catch an indefinite number of teammates in a round, but for each person they catch after the first there is a stacking 20% auto-failure chance. Returning users to their broom is a free action for the owner of the blue bottle, but those being returned to their broom need to use their action getting to their broom. Only one person can be returned to their broom as a free action (for the owner) per round, they can use their action to return a second user however.

George clenched his jaw as he heard the incantation and witnessed the resulting explosion from Serena's wand work. Yes, George's drive to win (and veiled threats) were compelling enough to absolve her of any guilt for what had happened. It hadn't mattered, anyway - all they had done was add a few bruises to the long-haired one, which he deserved. He still managed to throw the little one ahead before meeting his doom. It would take a miracle from here...

It was clear that the Gryffindor's could sense that one lioness was going to be targeted once again, and so upperclassmen Xailah came to young Della's rescue, healing her with a well done Episkey.

The Hufflepuffs, on the other hand, continued their offensive antics, clearly hoping to slow down the competition. And it was working. While Della would feel sweet relief, it was only momentary, as Simon would throw a rather large rock that would hit her directly on the back. She was still holding on, though just barely.

George had made the plan that, after shooting Xailah up into the sky, it was time to send her back down once again. Xailah would probably be feeling as if she was on one of those 'slingshot' rides that one would find at a muggle amusement park, as now she would shoot back down to the ground, no, into the ground, her broom falling out from underneath her. It would take some time to recover.

Sophie had finally decided that she was done throwing whatever was in her vicinity at people, and she began heading forward once again with a burst of speed. Both Hugh and Sophie had no issue making it through the shiny snowy area, and they both pushed onward, alongside Serena and Simon, into the unit that all had fallen prey to before, in some way or another.

It was hard to tell what was more dangerous of the Cockatrice's habits, the flames or the slowness that its gaze caused. This round, Sophie would probably have to say the flames, as when she managed to avoid its gaze, it turned right toward her and hurled a large swath of flames at her. For a moment, she looked like she would avoid it, but it hit her side, and down the young badger went, now passed out on the ground, unmoving.
"Whoa, that Cockatrice has got one heck of a breath, it just took Verlice right out of the race! Two racers out, only four left now!" Starlee commented.

Serena's rather large broom, no, tree, clearly wasn't able to handle such high speeds, as she came crashing into a few trees in the relatively open clearing. That had to hurt.

Serena managed to avoid the chill of the snow, while Jack, who had initially started behind everyone, was now in second. Perhaps it had been a show off move to win the race while starting behind... although... he did still have to actually win, and the chill of the snow was keeping him moving slower than he probably preferred.

Submitted Plays

Edit 1: A misunderstanding in action led me to roll for Marina attempting to escape the devils snare, but she opted not to so she takes no damage.

Zooming through the air, she caught the eye of- wait, what the heck was it? Was that a dragon?! It was only a glimpse but she knew it wasn't a dragon. It did not stop her from catching its eye though and she felt her spine give a shudder for a moment as she quickly tried to fly away from it. In her panic, the branches of the trees whacked her arms and legs. One nicked the side of her cheek, causing her to hiss a little. It had to be the panic setting it. She had practised going through treelines so much before - these ones seemed almost easy in comparison but she just... couldn't seem to steer her broom properly. It would jostle at the last moment or something.

They were flying closer to the end of the race. It was getting to that time. Serena struggled to keep track of where everyone was. Were her own teammates all ahead or behind her? Were people even okay? She could barely keep up anymore. She saw a figure of what looked like Jack ahead of her. That was a good sign and she vaguely recalled seeing the others for a brief moment before the cockatrice had stolen all of her attention.

Ugh, she needed to focus. This race seemed almost more brutal than the previous ones for some reason and they had barely done anything.

Bothering @George Henry

It was just one damn thing after another with these badgers, wasn't it? It looked as if no one would be catching a break anytime soon- Xailah included, with the Descendo headed her way. Okay. Fine. It was a little annoying, sure, but nothing to get in a twist about. It wasn't like she could have done much so high above the track anyway. Bringing her back down within the same period of sending her skyward seemed like overkill. Or maybe George generally liked poking sleeping bears. There was no immediate reaction until the descent was completed; where Xailah then opted to address her relentless perpetrator.

"Are you quite finished?" She droned, dropping her attention down for a moment to inspect her gloves. Needless to say, she wasn't the slightest bit amused by his yo-yoing of her broom. Why, for some ungodly reason he would not leave her alone, she did not know. What she did know was how to get him off her back. When in doubt, fight fire with gasoline. "Kind of you to bring me back down, Henry, but I must inquire," she called up, one hand cupped near her mouth to make sure the message got to her assailant. "why must you be so fixated on me?" It was all part of the game, she was well aware, but there was no harm in doing a bit of passive-aggressive poking. No harm could ever come from whacking a beehive- if you could outrun the bees, that is. "Go be a bother to that nice chap behind you! He looks like he needs something to do." Like something other than throwing things at Gryffindor.

A rock whistled by, and Xailah followed its path just long enough to witness the object clock Della right in the back. She wasn't looking too great (which was a temporary fix with a quick healing spell; but again, with how this game was playing out, she'd be needing another pick-me-up soon), and the metamorph could only imagine how well Marina was faring. There had been no signals of triumph so far- which only meant one thing: the younger lioness got stuck somewhere on the track. Hopefully whatever she had come to face was only a momentary setback.
