The days seemed to drag on. Wake up, eat, go to class, study, sleep. The young Slytherin's days were blending into a blur of forgetful moments. Nothing seemed to matter. Her mind was searching for distractions, a sense of meaning, or purpose to hold on to. Through herself into doing more homework, longer patrols, anything to keep her mind occupied. Some days were easier to fill than others. But the hardest were the weekends. Monica dreaded every Friday. Those 2 following days that normally brought joy, and a break at work, and schedule, now just filled her with dread, and emptiness. The question always was how to fill the time of the next 48 hours.

Lingering in her chair, as the time slowly clicked down to the end of the school day, Monica could feel her body tense. Wishing class could just continue on a few more minutes. But no, within mere seconds, she was the last one in the room, everyone else ready to start their weekend. Collecting her things, she pulled herself from her seat leaving the security of her classroom behind.

Wondering the halls, the voices around her drowned out, as she walked, having no direction of where to go, but just knowing she wanted to keep walking. She held tight to her satchel, pondering if she should venture to the library, and fall into a novel, or perhaps get a head start on some potions homework. But her legs did not take her to the library, instead she found herself leaving the castle walls, and finding a sole bench to rest on.

It was quiet, not a lot of others outside at this time. Most were putting their things away, getting ready for supper. Monica treaded through the snow, the soft powder crunching slightly under every step. Her breath fogged the air in front of her, and Monica noticed that not only was she out in the cold, but also without proper winter wear. Taking a seat, the cement of the bench burning chills up her spin. Her body began to shake as she sat, gazing up at the falling snowflakes, dazzling in the setting sunlight. Her teeth began to chatter, but Monica remained where she sat, finding this moment peaceful. Closing her eyes, taking in a deep breath, Monica took out a fold piece of parchment. Enclosed on it was a crafted letter, explaining to her sister her plans for the holidays. Monica scanned over her writing, wondering if she should even send it out? Was it really the best plan? Taking a chance to learn more about her adoption from a stranger, rather than just forgetting the whole thing, and spending the holiday's with her family? Monica still had no idea what she wanted, and though she tried, she couldn't cast these thoughts out of her mind.

Marietta would finish packing up after her last class. She'd go through her bag and make sure everything was there. Of course, she couldn't help but apply some of her lavender oil her to her wrists before heading out. She had no idea what to do over the weekend-scratch that she knew exactly what she was going to do, but was lamenting the fact there could be better options if she had just reached out and at least tried to make friends after being sorted. She was going to explore the castle some more; determined not to be one those those students who gets lost every time they have a new schedule. She just started wandering, even though she should probably head to her dorm and save at least some of the corridors for this weekend she just moved, letting her feet guide her.

It wasn't too long before Marietta came to the courtyard. She wondered why she'd never seen this place before, it was beautiful, especially covered in snow. Frost covered the trees' leaves and what was probably a fountain causing them all to glimmer in the non existent sunlight. That was one of Marietta's favorite parts about Hogwarts: even the non-magical stuff seemed enchanted. After soaking in the beauty she wondered why she'd never come across this place before. There was no graffiti, no signs of scary wizarding gangs that hung out here, and she was pretty sure that she would of at least heard a mention of a rumor about there being a monster any where in the castle. It looked like a normal, albeit fancy, school courtyard. Courtyard? Oh that's why! Marietta remember most of the people saying something about a courtyard when giving her directions to the hospital wing; a place she should of gone to several times by now considering how often shes fallen out of a tree or bruised herself.

As Marietta completed her survey of the courtyard she spotted a girl who looked slightly older than her shivering with eyes focused on something not here. Was she crazy? Marietta couldn't help but wonder then told herself off for calling somebody crazy, though the girl was under dressed for the winter. Marietta made her way over to the girl as she rifled through her bag for the blanket she had packed in this morning. Finding it Marietta would look up "E-excuse me s-sorry to interrupt but it seems like you were unprepared to sit in the cold today I have a blanket if you'd like" Marietta would say offering the blanket that wasn't large but would at least keep her warm. "The name's Marietta would you mind if I sat with you?" the girl also looked kind of sad but Marietta didn't want to overwhelm her so she decided to wait for a response to the blanket before offering her some cookies.

The parchment crumpled as Monica's hand shook in the frozen breeze. So lost in thought, practically hearing the snowflakes as they landed on her robe, melting away as they made contact. Monica didn't realize someone had walked up to her, and took a moment to even register that a question was asked to her. She folded up the note, looked up at this fellow student, holding a blanket in her hands. Did she see the letter? Did she read it?

Monica's body tremoured again, her teeth chattering, this girl was right, Monica was way underdressed for sitting out her in the snow. And finally at this point, Monica could feel the cold. The Slytherin nodded, taking the blanket, wrapping it around her. She could feel her body heat being trapped by the new layer, and could feel more comfortable in the cold. Letting out a deep breath, "Thank you...I wasn't planning on being out as long as I had." She shifted on the bench, unsure if she wanted to remain alone, or let this new person sit with her... After a moment to think it over, Monica felt it would be rude to just accept the blanket and not let Marietta sit with her, plus how would she return the blanket after? "You can sit if you want, Marietta...I'm Monica." She made a space for the other student to join her.

Monica turned her face to the sky, watching as the sunlight beamed it's final blast over the world, offering pools of orange, reds and pinks replacing the once vibrant blue. About an hour or so and the night sky would turn this marvel into stunning navy starry sky. Monica tried to look at the girl out of the corner of her eye, did she feel obligated to sit here? Attempting to dispel any worry Marietta might have, Monica spoke up, "I just wanted some quiet, watch the sunset. It's peaceful isn't it?" The Parchment remained in Monica's fist, reminding her of the choices she had to make... and soon.

Marietta would take a seat and then take in her surroundings again the leaves and the fountains glimmering new shades now that Marietta was in a different position. It wasn't more beautiful now and it wasn't any less beautiful than before it was still breathtaking, just different in the slightest ways. After thoroughly taking in the scenery in cold Marietta would watch the girl intently, rubbing her wrists and hoping it wasn't too obvious she was staring. She seemed caught up in her head distant yet still sad. If theres anything that Marietta learned over the years of being a shadow, of watching, waiting for somebody to ask for aid or seem like they need it, is that theres a difference from being distant and being sad.

But Monica did seem to be both so-Marietta nodded "Sorry if I'm interrupting that quiet, I love watching to sunset too, the backyard of my house is a small orchard so I usually like to sit in a tall tree and watch as the sun goes down." she said semi-nervously as she brought out some cookies "I always found it was more enjoyable with a good snack. If you don't like cookies or if your allergic to anything I have some other treats too" She'd say this offering some of tho cookies to Monica. As she did this Marietta would pop a cookie into her mouth and examine Monica.

Her body language said she was said and the parchment in her hand...oof nothing like a bad letter from home, on the plus side though new friend!! Marietta thought, adjusting herself to seem welcoming, relaxing her back and shoulders and making it so she was just smiling not grinning like a maniac. She wouldn't to do the best she could to convey that she was safe to Monica. It was okay if Monica didn't open up to Marietta as long as Monica did whatever she needed to feel better.

The girl took a seat next to Monica, going silent for a moment, though Monica hardly noticed. She was so wrapped up in her own thoughts at the moment. Marietta could have gotten up and walked away, and Monica might have remained just as lost in thought.

It was unclear how much time past as the two sat side by side in silence, could have been a meer second, or could have been several minuets, Monica had no idea, but at some point, Marietta spoke up, she was a soft spoken girl, and Monica felt quite relaxed being reminded that some one was sitting with her. Looking over, the Slytherin replied, "No, your not interrupting anything." Monica's voice was soft, yet still pointed... She tried so hard to seem okay in front of this girl, why? Was it to feel like she was preserving something about herself? Like showing emotion was some how showing weakness? She chose to not think about it, instead she listened with great intent as Marietta described how she watched the sunset back home. Monica could see it all, the tall tree, offering safety, and escape from life's troubles. The setting sun, the colours it brought to the sky, the final performance of the day before giving way to the moon. It all sounded so peaceful.

Out of the corner of her eye, Monica saw Marietta going through her bag, she dare not fully look, but it caught her attention for sure. The red haired girl pulled out some cookies, and offering them to Monica. The Slytherin smiled, happy to have a little sugary snack. "Thank you... I love cookies! My mom always made amazing chocolate chip cookies at her pastry shop!"

Monica dwelled in the memory of her mother. Coming home after school, running to the shop to help her mother close for the day. The smells that invited you in, the ideas she had for new recipes. It was a precious memory, and it felt good to remember her mother in this way, rather than how she had been growing to question who her mother was. Monica looked back down at the parchment in her hand, mouth full of cookie as she thought for a moment.

This letter would break her mother's heart... did she really want to do that?

Maybe it was the beauty of the sky, the soothing sound of the fountain, or the distant chirps of birds, or maybe it was just that Marietta was so good at making a person feel safe that Monica, despite her attempts to remain stoic, opened up a little to the Hufflepuff. "I'm just wondering if it's worth sending this letter to my family," Monica held up the note, the edges crumpled from where she had been holding it. "It's a tough call, but I don't think I am going to go home for Christmas." Though she wasn't being full transparent, she still opened up more than she intended to... darn it... cookies seem to always be the key to unlock Monica's inner thoughts.

Marietta would of done a fist pump but this was clearly not the time so she refrained herself. When Monica mentioned a pastry shop Marietta also had to refrain from salivating. For a moment, she imagined the the smell, the feeling of dough between her fingers each morning, for a moment she felt pure bliss. Marietta shook herself and tucked the idea away gently folding it up and placing it with other fantasies and happy memories she hid under when the current reality became...too much. She was happy that Monica enjoyed the cookies and let the relief show on her face.

Monica told her what was wrong still being very vague, which was in all honesty was expected, they did just meet. Marietta paused for a moment thinking of what to say to put her at ease and maybe even help her. "May I ask why your debating whether its worth it? I understand if you don't want to but would your family want to know your not coming home?" Marietta asked, usually she tried her best to work with what somebody gave her so she didn't have to push them. In this case the way Monica said it made it feel like there was something up with the letter. She again she shook herself don't make assumptions Marietta she though telling herself off.

To the outward onlooker it would look for a brief moment the very relaxed Marietta would be very angry and glare down at herself and then relaxed Marietta would be back, with a little bit more tension in her shoulders. She'd pop another cookie into her mouth and place the rest of them between her and Monica on the bench. She trusted Monica to help her get rid of them before they froze or fell on the ground. She smiled at that this time genuine. She even allowed a thought of maybe this weekend won't be as bad to slip into her mind.

Pondering over the presented question, as the Hufflepuff proceeded to eat another cookie, placing the rest of them between the pair. Monica swung her legs as she sad on the bench. Taking a big sign, and grabbing another cookie, she spoke up, "Of course if I wasn't coming home they would want to know... but knowing that would make them upset, I just know it." She took a bite of the cookie, being met with a loud crunch, the cookie was well on it's way of freezing... an though Monica herself was rather cold, she didn't wish to go inside just yet. Finishing off the chilled desert, Monica added, "It would be the first time ever, that I wouldn't spend Christmas with the family... but I just..." She paused for a moment. Gazed up at the sky.

Who was she to drop all of her family issues on this person sitting next to her. Why would she want to hear what Monica was going through, it didn't concern her... and Monica didn't want to scare the girl off. Plus what would she even say? 'I am letting my parents know that I wont be home for Christmas, because I will be off with a random woman I don't know to learn about how they have lied to me about my adoption my whole life'? That is no way to introduce yourself to a new person. Monica cleared her throat, "I just have some other plans... and I don't want to hurt mum's feelings for choosing this over being home. I just don't know how to say any of it....Ugh I wished phones worked here... I just want to talk to my sister about this." Monica didn't even stop to think if this student was aware of Muggle things, and knew what she meant when saying phone, but at the present moment, Monica didn't stop to clarify.

Wanting to change topics rather quickly, Monica reached into the bag, grabbing another cookie, "These are amazing! Did you make them?"

Marietta felt the cold deep in her bones. It didn't bother her though. Long as she was helping somebody she'd be warm and happy. She could get frostbite for all she cared so long as she had been in the middle of saving a puppy while it happened. She wanted to be a shoulder for people to lean, the shoulder that hadn't been there her. So, she watched Monica intently as she looked up struggling with her words. Marietta would have given her a hug if they knew each other better. Once Monica finished Marietta formulated her response making sure to find a why to encourage her to send the letter to her parents but not sound insensitive.

"Well... it had to happen at some point right? I mean I doubt there's somebody who has gone their entire life without missing one Christmas their family. So, why not now? I don't know your family so I can't tell you if they'll be or upset or not but what I do know is that if they love you, they'll forgive you. Might take awhile if its really bad, but hey if its important enough to you to miss Christmas with your family, then your family being upset for you for awhile has to be worth it as well. What I do know is that they'll probably be more upset if you don't send the letter at all. No parent wants the stress of wandering what happened to there child for weeks."

Marietta's voice dipped on the last sentence, it had a tinge of sadness to it since she couldn't help thinking of her own mother, who was probably out of her mind with worry by now. "If it helps this will be my first Christmas away from my family as well"

Marietta couldn't help but giggle about the phone statement "Completely agree with you there things would be a lot easier if I could sit down and play 20-thousand questions with my Dad over the phone" She could just imagine sitting in the Hufflepuff common room and drilling him on all the questions she had with a phone. Instead she spent the little bit of allowance she'd been given on sending him letters with the questions. The answers never quite what she was looking for.

"Oh yes, thank you! I love baking in the morning I feel like baking these cookies and the occasional brownie batch is simply the best way to wake up. Never know when your gonna run into somebody who needs the sustenance and/or good cheer of cookies" After she said this she gave Monica a wink.

Cookie crumps lingered on Monica's mouth as she listened to the girl sitting next to her. She was trying to figure out if there was more she wanted to say, shed some light to the girl about her situation. What she was saying was true, but Monica wasn't just missing family Christmas, she was choosing her birth family over her family, something that her parents (To Monica's knowledge) still didn't know she knew.

Monica shifted on the bench, she had just met this girl, how much did she really want to share? But on the other hand, how does one even build a friendship? If not by taking a leap of faith, being honest and transparent. Monica creased the letter in her hand, stroking it with her thumb, when Marietta was finished, Monica took a breath, "So.... the thing is...." She could feel her throat tighten, holding back her anger, her emotions, everything that was bubbling up inside of her. "I'm adopted..." The word fell from her mouth, punching her in the gut, no matter how many times Monica said it, it still didn't feel real, it felt like a bad word! Like she was about to be called out for lying, or something horrible would happen just by saying, adopted! "Um.... My parents, don't know that I know this....."

She opened the letter, reading to herself what she had wrote,
Dear Mom and Dad,

I just needed to write you a letter to let you know I won't be home for Chirstmas this year. I have learned some things about myself, things that you have kept from me for years.....
The words stopped there, nothing further was written, Monica looked up at the redhead girl, "I'm angry with them..." She admitted, "But I still feel like I am betraying them by seeking out more information about my birth mother."

She stopped talking, listening to the wind blowing through the trees. She took another bite of the cookie, adding with a mouth full, "Maybe I just send them a bag of these, and leave it at that." Monica's lip curled up slightly, she could feel the chill seep through her clothes, and her body once again shook. It was cold...

Freezing actually. Wait....

Was Marietta cold? Had she been this whole time? And yet she stayed out her with Monica despite it? "I'm sorry, all my ramblings, you must be freezing!" Looking at how they both were dressed, "I'm sorry I've been keeping you out here." Monica handed back the girls blanket, if she would take it, trying to make sure she was still warm enough, as well as giving the girl an out if she would take it, Monica felt sick, she wasn't used to being this open with someone about her personal life... and didn't want the girl to feel she was trapped in the conversation. (To be honest it was more Monica's insecurities with her emotions, she would truly want nothing more than to keep talking with Marietta, but she would never admit that, even to herself, the fear of the girl choosing to walk away was so strong, Monica thought it was easier to give her an out than feel like she was staying against her will)

Marietta would giggle at the strange 'are you cold' remark. She would gently push the blanket towards the shivering girl next to her. "One, you haven't been keeping me out here. I could have left when ever I liked, I simply choose not to! So, don't apologize for something you didn't do. Two, physically... yeah sure I guess I'm freezing, but inside, where it really matters, I'm warm and toasty! I don't see how anybody can get cold when they're helping out! Three, keep the blanket your colder than me. Your dealing with a lot right now! I can't imagine what it must feel like to have your world tipped on its axis like that..." Marietta would say this in the most comforting tone she could manage.

Her teeth wanted chatter, and her body wanted to shake, but she didn't let it. She was concerningly good at stopping herself from doing things. To shaking because it was cold to crying, she could suck it up and hold it in. Right now though, it was a good thing. Marietta knew if she showed signs of freezing right after handing back her blanket, the Syltherin would panic. She had too much on her plate to be worrying about a shivering hufflepuff right now.

Marietta carefully plotted out what she was going to say next in her mind. Marietta was now determined to cheer up, or at least help this girl. "Then tell them." Marietta said looking the prefect in the eye. "Tell them that you found out! But tell them that you love them any ways [cause its pretty obvious you do]. Tell them that your mad but feel like your betraying them by seeking out info. Maybe they have info! Maybe they'll understand. Maybe they won't have info, but encourage you to seek it out! I can't say anything for sure because, again, I don't really know you or your parents, but this seems like one those situations that even you don't know how your parents will react." Marietta would pause still trying to approach this delicately. he just hoped she was succeeding. "I don't mean to presume anything of course! Thats just my guess on the situation so far..." Marietta said sheepishly. Idiot! don't over step the line! she'd think at herself.

Marietta would brush it off and give the prefect a smile. "Ya know sending some cookies with it doesn't sound like a terrible idea." She'd laugh, wondering how that would go over. "I'm glad you like them though! If you want..." Marietta would pull out a pen and some parchment. "I could write you up the recipe, finding the ingredients for it in the kitchen is simple enough."
