“This,” the Head of Hufflepuff said simply, “is the Owlery. I wouldn’t think I needed to explain it to you, what with being a Sixth Year, a NEWT student and all, but alas here we are. Should you have any desire to communicate with your parents or your fiance or whom-so-ever it is you feel so desperate to speak to you, you do it via owl.”

The professor straightened her jacket, absentmindedly thumbed the brim of her hat, then continued, “As you can no doubt see, the ground here is rather filthy. Owls are birds after all, and despite being a symbol of wisdom, they’re not very intelligent ones. I’ve requested that the elves take a break from cleaning the floor of the owlery for this first week of the school term. The poor birds did have to live in a rather unpleasantly smelling environment over the last couple of days, but I assure you it wasn’t anything cruel, and besides, you are here to right that wrong.”

Removing her thumb from her hat, Magdalena jerked the digit at a bucket of warm soapy water in the corner, a single rag hung on it side, “You’ll be scrubbing the floor of all the gunk and guano, without magic, mind you, so hand over your wand.”

The room was rather putrid-smelling. It was by no means horrific, Magdalena would never subject the poor courier animals to those conditions, but it was certainly ripe, and the professor was loathe to remain in the room for longer than absolutely necessary. But a lesson had to be taught, and while she was no longer in the dungeons speaking as to Wiggenweld potions, she was still in charge of ensuring that her students learned how to properly conduct themselves.

“It should go without saying that running away from school is a serious offence. Don’t even try to justify it. You are an adult, yes, but you are still a student. We are entrusted to your care. Do it again and you will not be allowed back through the castle gates. Are we clear?”

She paused, “Get cleaning.”
