Memories were fleeting, circling and dancing with their tantalizing colors, so far out of reach, yet dancing on the edge of one's mind, like a beautiful song that one had yet to memorize the lyrics of, so the song changed with every hummed rendition. Such was the ways of memories. They lingered in the mind, but they changed ever so slightly. Two different people could claim two different renditions of the same thing, even if it was something simple like the color of a leaf. One would claim it lime green, while the other could claim it mint green. Inconsequential details made up a large pattern of huge details, that somehow became consequential, and every little fact became the base of a new set of memories.
The one who saw a lime green leaf might have thought the day was summery, and the wind rippled in the fields of grass, while the soft setting sun cast it's radiating glow down upon the two friends; while the person who saw the leaf of mint green may claim the day was soft, like the petals of a flower, covered in morning dew, as the sun shone down lightly, casting the field in a heavenly glow. Perception meant everything, and everyone had their own perceptions set in place, like a filter from reality. Eventually, these filters changed and altered moments in their own ways, slowly shifting the cosmic reality, going in parallel with other's memories, but not running the same course.
She would remember this moment, windy as it was, with the sun crippling it in it's vast splendor, burning through the black of the robes the two girls wore. The issue with wearing black all the time was that every single little splatter of sunlight burned the heavy material, causing even the most foggy glimpses of the sun to be blistering, and extremely hard to handle, for one Eris Fawley. The most lovely of all things was when the sun was shining high, and the little (once red head) was able to strip out of her heavy robes, into shorts and a tee-shirt. Today was not one of those days, as Rhea and Eris had just exited the library, and hadn't the time to change outfits.
How would they remember this moment? Would Eris see this moment differently than Rhea, in shades of wine red and cherry pink? Eris chanced a look at Rhea, expecting a befuddled expression on her ivory face, but had to muffle a surprised intake of a giggle, studying the Bishop girl, who was normally composed and proper, in all her actions. The stress of the moment had been taxing enough on Eris that she had not thought to bask in the glorious sunlight. Even while blisteringly hot, the wind offered a reprieve from the temporary heat, and the view of the towering stone castle, with it's sparkling turrets and aura of magic was lovely. While not a new sight, it still drew a happy sigh from Eris's lips, as she turned to stare at the sleeping form of her friend.
Rhea had hardly been sleeping, or perhaps she had been sleeping while Eris's mind darted through a crescendo of memories, building up to the simple truth. Her sister had not loved Eris, not in the way that sisters had been supposed to love. Even as the faces of her mum and her studded jackets danced in the lapping flames of Eris's teary vision, the hair on the top of her head burnt, and if Eris was able to check and stare at the strands of hair on the top of her head, she would find them rapidly changing color.
The colors, while random to an outsider, could easily be classifed by one who was well versed in the coloration of the objects in the strange Elcan household. The first of the colors was a baby pink, which lingered longer, calling to the colors of Bella's favorite dresses, wrapped in lace and satin and endowed with the giggles of childhood, making the fabric all the more precious than the quaint sum of money that had been spent on ordering the puffed up dress from a local disney store. The next shade of hair colorization was a muted green, which seemed out of place on the head of a human girl. It looked like the kind of color that one could find on a weather worn, or a dusty, scarf. Which, the color sadistically was, if one knew the story. It was the green of Jane Rowle's slytherin scarf, stored in a drawer far from the children's eyes. Of course, the storing of the scarf meant nothing, not when children talked. The evident truth of childhood was that if you handed a child something and told them it was forbidden, they would open it up.
Everyone had their own Pandora's box, and sometimes they shut it up too soon. That was the case for the dusty Slytherin scarf, which Eris had stared at, on occasion, and never understood the meaning of. Something seemed sacred about the green piece of fabric, as if putting it on would displease her parents, and Eris's parents were her gods. Disrupt the parents, and there would be nothing to satisfy Eris's unrelenting boredom, locked up in the safe beige walls of her flat. Safe was a word her parents used a lot, and the scarf had not been safe.
The next color of the ever changing hair was golden. The gold of golden bars, the shining sun, and other beautiful things that did not belong on the field of a school, no matter how populated and beautiful the Scottish Castle was. It was the color of riches, but to Eris, it was the color of danger. The color of the snakes that decorated the leather jackets of Jane and her collages. The color that sucked all attention towards it, and was a color that Eris had learned to fear.
The last strain of color, before Eris's hair refused to bulge, was a a dark blue, with iridescent shining strips of gems darting through the strands. The color of her stuffed dragon, or her favorite one of the bunch. He was a fat blue dragon, gifted to Eris by her father, when he had heard of her fixation on the winged creatures of legends and folk stories. Unlike the majestic beasts of folklore, which so often had names to rival their power (Viserion, Saphira, Smaug, and so forth.), Eris's blue dragon had no such name. Sir Wingsalot, while a cumbersome danger to the humans who dared oppose him, Sir Wingsalot worked for Eris, and her cohort band of misfit toys, known as the anti- princess federation, attempting to shut down the dangerous obsession with pink dresses, looking for the comic books and dragonic pleasures of childhood, instead of sipping tea out of plastic tea cups.
When the colors stopped, leaving Eris with blue hair, and a faint expression of bemusement on her face, Rhea had rubbed the remaining traces of sleep from her green eyes, and was now alert, perhaps noticing the lack of presence on Eris's face, or the absent way her hair changed color, easily, as Eris made no effort to bother practicing changing the color, or even correcting the strange mass of blue on her head.
Eris felt confused, almost like she was waking up from the dream, instead of the girl next to her. Her hair had changed as rapidly as the seasons, and her heart contracted, as Rhea stated they needed to fix Eris. Did she need fixing? She felt fine, while strange and light, and not in control, she felt better. She remembered fragments of childhood that she had not remembered before, and the freedom that came with memory encompassed her, wrapping Eris in a form of bubble wrap, protecting her from the bitter sun and wind, and Rhea's words.
Her voice was dreamy, eyes glazed over, as Eris turned an errant gaze towards the girl next to her. "I suppose we do, but do we really want to let the professors know? They seem to have a knack for..ruining everything and not caring."

was never one to focus on the big picture. She much preferred to nitpick every little thing, focusing on the small instead of the big. However, she was trying a new thing where she would do both. It was not good to simply focus on the big, or to only care about the small. Focusing on both seemed like a healthy medium.
This dream of hers seemed to be hinting at something. What it was, Rhea didn't know. All she knew was that it had something to do with her father, but figuring out what would require her to remember the little details. She could do so later, for now she had more important things to attend to. Eris's hair was changing colors at a slower pace than before - maybe triggered by whatever was going through the gnome's head at the moment. Be it memories or a dream like Rhea had had, it was causing Eris confusion and thus prompting the change of hair color.
What would happen should Rhea have the same ability that Eris had? If the change was prompted by feelings and memories, would her hair constantly be a melancholy blue? Or perhaps a sickly green, because of her envy of others with happy, functional families. It would never be a bright, sunshine yellow, to indicate that she was happy. At most, it would be different shades of pastel colors, to signify her childish innocence. Yes, she had a much more... emotionally taxing childhood than most others her age, but she was still innocent and could be happy. That was not ripped away from her, at least not yet.
Preferring not to focus on something she didn't have, Rhea turned her attention to the sky. It was a pretty blue, a blue that Rhea wouldn't mind having the same color hair of... that is, if she ever dyed her hair! Which she wouldn't. The color was a bit lighter than that of Eris's current blue; Eris's was a deep blue, as if coming from the depths of the ocean. A pretty blue, but nothing compared to the majestic blue ambience that radiated from the sky.
When the color of the hair sprouting from Eris's hair finally stopped, it was blue. She had gone through a few changes, each one possibly signifying something special about Eris's life. What it was, Rhea wanted to ask, but she feared that this wasn't the right time. The short girl looked to be in a gaze or trance of some sort, too busy drowning in her thoughts than answering questions. But when she snapped out of it, her first words were about Rhea's previous statement.
"Yes, I guess you are right about that," Rhea murmured, remembering the events of the Hufflepuff campout. She had a few friends that had been affected horribly by it, traumatized - all the while there had been a professor nearby. "All the professors scare me, if I'm to be honest. The sooner we can understand how this new power of yours works, the better. If we can not go to a professor, there must be someone else we can trust! Right?"

She was tired. So very tired, lying on the grass with a rumbling in her stomach that would not subside, as Rhea awoke from her nap. The sky was light with the hues of the evening sky starting to come in, a lovely shade of delicate sunset framed with varying pallets of orange, framing the setting sun in a bright glow that cast a waning light on the two girls. The periwinkle and faded strips of light pink also framed the orange, as the sun set completely, leaving the two girls with a faint imprint of sunset cast in the whites of Rhea and Eris’s eyes, as the twinkling stars started to awaken from their slumber, almost screaming that they had been there all along, trapped under the glow of the sun.
Now they could awaken, as the moon goddess Selene peaked open her eyes and smiled--casting the world with a heavenly glow. One with older eyes and a fondness for beauty might of paused to take in the setting sun or the heavenly aftermath of it’s glow, but Eris could focus on nothing besides the rumbling in her stomach, growing worse with every minute that Rhea talked. The grimace of a smile that had found its way onto Eris’s face as they talked faded with another loud growl from the bottomless pit of her stomach, which was screaming out for chips and mince pie, made expertly by the house elves. It was far better than Nandos chicken, which was saying something.
It wasn’t everyday that Eris made a new friend, but she had a feeling that Rhea would be her friend for a while to come. The two girls had many similar interests and once they had shared the same trademark red hair. Eris was not sure if her hair would be able to retain the russet color, not when every small thing set her off, changing her hair’s shade as quickly as some girls changed their outfits, when they weren’t stuck in uniform robes at a strange boarding school. At least Eris and Rhea still shared a position on the Quidditch Team, proudly handling the title of chaser. They needed another chaser after the old one had left, but Eris and Rhea were still content in their positions.
Eris sighed, also remembering the bitter taste in her mouth of swallowing back repulsion, just thinking of the hufflepuff campout. The wafting fires of the burning forest, along with the screams had made their way up to Eris and Rhea’s isolated common room, at the top of the North Tower. Everyone had woken up to bare witness to what Eris often prayed was a sick nightmare, standing up in her jacket, blanket wrapped around her shoulders. She had been greeted by the presence of flames, rising higher and higher, but never tall enough to lick the sides of the Tower window that Eris and her friends crowded around. It had seemed like a dream, feaverish and heavy lidded eyes and a tired mind had been key in pushing away any lingering thoughts that warned that the apparition of fire was not real.It hadn’t been, and when Eris found her way out of bed the next morning, and made her way down towards the Great Hall, the rumors spread like the wildfire of the night before.
The Hufflepuff first year class was burnt, flayed alive really, if the burnt hufflepuff jokes gave any idea about the perils of the situation. Eris, to her everlasting dismay, had not visited Serena in the Hospital Wing. She had assumed that without the prefect badge on her chest, Eris was not worth Serena’s time, or her friendship. Everyone knew who Serena Towers was, why would she want Eris’s company when she had other grieving friends? Eris had been glad that Rosie Parker was okay, but she knew that Sabrina had spent the days after the campout in a perpetual state of fear, worrying about Reid.
Shaking out the strands of hair from her eyes, effectively popping the bubble of past memories gliding through her thoughts. Eris blinked widely, as Rhea’s words were drowned out by a stampede of footsteps charging up the worn stone path to the Great Hall. Eris could almost smell the wafting aroma that was sure to be protruding from the tables by the time Eris and Rhea got there.
Eris felt almost guilty for wanting to leave the spot under the tree, but hope lingered under her skin, shining as brightly as the stars. There would be hope for a friendship with Rhea. Rhea had seen Eris at her worst, at the moment of truth when everything changed, and there would be time to see her as a friend. “As much as I love talking, I think we can have better conversations in the Great Hall, where it’s warm and there’s food to devore.”
Pushing herself off the tree, hans coming up to rub off the silt and bark that had clung onto the fabric of her robes, Eris smiled at Rhea. A bit of fear over her new hairstyle and showing people what had happened flashed through Eris’s mind, but it was forgotten again, as another growl of hunger coursed through Eris’s body. Without another word, Eris stood up. Feet crunching against the leaves that were already rumpled and cracked from the prior set of footsteps the two girls had made, Eris began the trek back to the warm Great Hall, content in the fact she had made a new friend.

Do you like scars? The scars make the man?
Do you want me wounded and hardened?
My head in the sand
Or my fists up in defiance?
Do you want me wounded and hardened?
My head in the sand
Or my fists up in defiance?
The events that had transpired still confused the young girl. When she agreed to meet Eris earlier that day to inform her of her family history, she had not expected to reveal this much. Pink, purple, blue - whatever color Eris's hair color was now, that was not something Rhea could have predicted happening in... well, a million years. Such a prospect seemed impossible to the girl, yet here they were.
Sighing, Rhea looked up at the dying sky. That was how she thought of it - when the sun went away and the moon came out, the sky had fallen asleep for the time being. It made sense! The sky was sleeping, hence, everyone else had to sleep with it! That probably did not make sense for most others, but it worked for Rhea, which was what truly mattered.
The shining moon gradually showed its face, illuminating the Grounds in a natural light, a contrast to the torches that reached the two girls from the surrounded towers. A few stars began to litter the sky, with the most prominent being Venus. That was Rhea's favourite star - even though it wasn't actually one, Rhea liked to think it was.
Night approached, and Rhea began to feel the chill of the cold Scottish night. It was never a smart idea to be outside during the night, if not for the coldness but for the animals that preferred to come out then. Thus, Rhea cast a look at Eris, trying to read the girl's expression and see if she was ready to go back inside or not.
When she couldn't deduct an answer, Rhea simply shrugged it away and laid back down on the ground. The night wasn't that bad, not yet at least. She could stay out here for a moment or two. Besides, it was a nice opportunity to just take a deep breath and reflect over... whatever.
Her parents were the first thing that crossed her mind, more specifically, her father. The daydream she'd had had really turned her emotions over, mixing them in a mixture of just... a whole bunch of different things. Her mind couldn't focus on a single emotion, and thus, she was left with all of them hitting her at once. As if a wave of emotions was drowning her... but the thing was, Rhea could swim. And so she did - for rather than sorting everything out and dealing with them all in order, Rhea preferred to simply run away! The girl had never been properly taught how to deal with any emotion other than snobbiness and happiness, and thus any emotion that was not that she pushed away! It was rather simple, really. There wasn't too much to it.
Adjusting her position so she could become more comfortable, Rhea turned her attention to something other than... herself. A rare feat, but it was something that needed to be done. The girl had more things to worry about than just herself, may the thought be as unbelievable as it is. There was, for example, the idea of what to do about Eris's hair. The stark change of color was not likely to go unnoticed; a good explanation needed to be set in place to explain what had happened. Thus, Rhea decided to think of a good, but non questionable reason. A dye gone wrong? Or perhaps a spell gone awry? Thinking about it tired Rhea out; lying was not a passion of hers, she never liked to do it.
Thus, her mind wandered elsewhere. But elsewhere, in this case, was nowhere, for her mind gradually became... blank. The young Gryffindor was thinking about absolutely nothing. It was a rare feeling, this feeling of nothingness, but a welcome one. Rhea smiled, looking up at the night sky as she enjoyed Eris's company. Sometimes, two people didn't need to talk to have a good time. This situation was presented in the case of the two young Gryffindor Chasers, who had decided to forget all talking and just take in everything that had unfolded.
The school year hadn't even been going on that long, yet look at what had already happened. The bloody Hufflepuff Campout, which had injured more than half of the Hufflepuff population - including a few of Rhea's acquaintances and friends. Just the thought that they could have died scared Rhea sh*tless, and so, she tried her best never to think about it. After all, if she didn't think about it, it wasn't real, right?
Breathing in deeply to calm herself down once more, Rhea inhaled the scent of various foods that had spread out onto the Grounds once the wide doors had opened. A chorus of footsteps sounded all throughout, echoing against the trees on the edge of the forest. Standing up, Rhea turned around to look at Eris - only to see that the other had already stood up. Rhea's stomach was grumbling loudly, and when the metamorphmagus suggested they go up and eat, Rhea furiously nodded her head.
"You stole the words right out of my mouth," the Bishop joked, smiling. "I don't particularly crave freezing out here in the cold. Let's go." And with that, the two began their trek inside the castle. Rhea grabbed Eris's hand and they made their way up there.
Together.
