Second class: Defense Against The Dark Arts LOCKED

I walk into the room, finding a seat at the back of the class. So far, no seating assignments. I hoped none of my professors would change that. I always loved sitting in the back of the room, even at home. It always made me feel safe. I took out my quill, ink, and paper from a small leather crossbody bag that I had gotten for my tenth birthday. I was one of the first students in class, so I took out a book to read for a bit, saying I had nothing else to do. If Steve was here, he would be shocked to see me reading Hogwarts: A History. I started taking notes on the book until all of the other students had arrived. I had gotten pretty far on notes, and probably wouldn’t need to take many more for a week or two. After that, class was pretty much just an intro into what the dark arts are, and what we will be doing this year. It got pretty boring to me after about five minutes, so i started to doodle a bit, my favorite being a drawing of my brother’s owl, River. I always had artistic skill, practically since I could write my name. Steve always loved my art, so I quietly pulled out one of the many envelopes in my bag, (which I keep for this reason) and write Steve Rain, along with my address. I slip the carefully folded paper into the envelope along with the letter I started to write on Hogwarts Express. I would hold onto this until Steve sent River down to give me a letter. I wished to see her soon. If Steve moved to Ireland, he probably wouldn’t send her. I at least wanted one more letter from him.

Second class: Defense Against The Dark Arts LOCKED
I walk into the classroom and notice that Slytherin was also there, maybe that meant I could make new friends from other houses. Dakota was sitting in the back of the classroom but Dakota still looks a little down so I decide to ask her what’s wrong- But I didn’t know how to ask her. By the looks of it, it could be something really personal. I decided to put it on hold and get ready for class. I sit one seat ahead of her. My brother has told me all about this class. All of the rumors too. He told me that for seven years in a row that had to keep getting new DADA professors. He also told me that this class was a lot of fun. I’m really excited to start learning in this class. My sister said that we start off the year by learning about the nature of the dark arts. Some people are afraid to start Defense Against The Dark Arts because of all that weird things that have happened, (mainly when Harry Potter was here.) but not me! My brother says this is his favorite class. Gen said that it wasn’t her favorite but that’s because she didn’t like the stuff we learn as first years. She said it was boring, but Walter really liked it. I turn to look at Dakota and it looks like she is really down. She is clutching on to a paper and a quill. Okay, I can’t do this anymore.
”Dakota? Is everything alright?”

I look over at Kinsey. Should I tell her? It would feel nice to get this off my chest and let someone hear about it. But the thing is, I don’t want to dump my problems on friends. I have to tell her sometime soon. I lean forward and whisper to Kinsey. “I’ll tell you after class. I don’t want us getting in trouble for talking.”
She nods her head gently and we both start paying attention again. At least she does. I spin my quill around in my hand swiftly, being careful not to drop it. Defense Against the Dark Arts is a fun class, it just seemed to go by very slowly today, like it wanted me to be anxious. I decide to quit spinning my quill and set it down. After we are dismissed, I pack up my stuff into my brown leather bag, and catch up to Kinsey. I shuffle around my bag, trying to find the note and the drawing. I finally find it sitting at the very bottom of my bag. I spin it around in my hands a few times to make sure the envelope is not bent, and gently slide the paper out. I hand it over to her, and as she reads it I explain everything. “You don’t need to worry about me,” I tell her.
