New Beginnings:
It had taken a while for the initial shock to hit them.
This was it. Qrow was finally going to Hogwarts, finally going to see the place their parents had learned it all, finally going to get to learn how to use magic properly!
Manoeuvring their luggage through the thin and seemingly endless corridor of the train, Qrow Beithir narrowly avoided stumbling and falling over other students and their pets, mumbling half-hearted apologies and unheard excuse me’s as they went, until they finally came to a stop at an empty carriage that overlooked the platform.
Looking out the window, they could see their parents. Their mother - who upon seeing Qrow, started waving excitedly from where she was standing, shouting words of encouragement, their dad - with tears in his eyes, a blubbering mess from the realisation of how fast his only child has grown up, and their father, who was holding the latter in an attempt of comfort, a proud smile on his face.
It had taken ages for their parents to allow them to leave and get onto the train, all three of them wishing for one last hug goodbye.
As the train pulled away, Qrow could understand how they felt, they were going to miss their parents as much as they were going to miss Qrow, but that didn’t stop the feeling of bubbling excitement that was attempting to spill from their chest. This was the beginning of a new adventure. Qrow had grown up hearing all about the sort of mischief and mayhem that their parents had gotten up to during their own time at Hogwarts, and whilst they couldn't wait to explore, they were mostly looking forward to learning everything they could. This was only reinforced by how quickly the child had started reading the required textbooks, having already memorised most of them. Not that this stopped them from settling on the carriage floor, with their back pressed against the seat, and pulling out a copy of “Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them” by Newt Scamander. (not that they’d even need to know this information until 3rd year.)
They had grown up hearing all about magical beasts, their dad Hephaestus working with them for the ministry and their father Daemon having a certain love for all creatures, magical or otherwise, both of which helped to manifest Qrow’s love of magical creatures.
Qrow had seemingly been lucky with their spot in the train, and whilst their book was a welcome distraction from their fraying nerves, that only grew the further they got from the station, they couldn’t help but long for companions upon hearing the delighted squeals and shouts coming from further up the train.

. . .
====The family of five continued hugging each other on the platform. All wrapped one and another to help comfort their pulsing hearts from the mess of emotions that engulfed them. Wilhelm was teary-eyed and sullen but he remained in the moment, taking in every little detail about his last moments with his family together. This would be last time he would see them before going separate ways to Hogwarts. He didn’t particularly enjoy the thought of leaving his family behind.
====Wilhelm clung to them like his life depended on it, afraid they would slip from his grip.
====Never to return.
====In his arms were both his little sisters, who clung to him too, determinedly making sure he wasn’t going anywhere. His mother, Oh, his mother who consistently held the image of independence and didn’t settle for less was trembling in their shared embrace. Her eyes were a puffy red and her imperceptible frown a mix of sadness and reluctance as she held onto her eldest son tightly, even if they knew she had to soon. Wilhelm couldn't blame her. He would never in a million years.
====He could also sense that his father was trying to maintain control by being laidback. The older gentleman was always able to do that. No matter how much things got diffiicult or rough. That’s what tied their family together in the best way possible. Regardless of that, Wilhelm knew this situation was different.
====This wasn’t just another thunderstorm or a night terror, it was a goodbye for Merlin knows how long.
====His father must have sensed him mulling over such thoughts because he placed his hand on his head and mumbled quietly, “May th' blessin' of leight be upon ye’, leight without an' leight within—“
====Wilhelm rolled his eyes and chuckled, reciting the next word of the blessing, “—An' may th' blessed sunleight shine upon ye’ like a stoatin peat fire—“
====”—So 'at stranger an' mukker may come ain’ warm himself at it!” Calytrix and Ornella continued, joining him on the end of the sentence. They turned to each other with perplexed expressions then broke out into matching mischievous grins. Both of them started cackling, their tears now forgotten. Their sudden happiness was contagious to Forysthia and Malcolm who started laughing as well.
====But the Hogwart’s express had other plans.
====The train whistled, signaling the start of it’s departure. The loud noise successfully sliced through the laughter and caused everyone to jump back in alarm. A collective inhale was brought out of all five of them as the reality of the separation set in once again.
====“Go.” Forysthia wobbled out, pulling away from her eldest son to wipe her face dry. Her melancholic expression was quickly replaced with her usual sternness though her hands still shook slightly, “Go! Hurry!” She lifted his trunks from the asphalt effortlessly and shoved them into his arms, urging him towards the increasing crowd of students trying to get on the train.
====“I‘ll miss ye’!” Ornella warbled out, tears beginning to spill anew from her eyes. She was tugging on Calytix’s arm while Malcolm looked ready to follow suit but kept himself rooted there. “And… and…” She sniffed as more tears fell.
====The train roared louder than ever. Wilhelm bobbed his head and shifted the weight of his belongings in his arms clumsily. “I love you all,” he repeated hoarsely, fighting off the tight ball that formed in his throat and the burning sensation in his eyes. “I’ll owl you once I get there!”
====Wilhelm swiveled around then, sprinting past a stunned group of students, towards the boarding ramp. At first, he didn’t stop and weaved through the ocean of potential classmates seamlessly. As he went further away he heard his name being shouted after him and a couple of cheers. It was only after he got a few metres away to the edge of the platform did the sound die down completely. Wilhelm slowed his pace to a trot, letting out shaky breaths that he didn’t know he was holding until those expelled.
====He made it through the rest of the students that lined the train and climbed aboard with shaky legs. Inside, he found a spot with a window and leaned against it, watching through blurry vision as his family grew smaller until they were no more than specks in his field of view. It was all lost in the sea of green that greeted him outside of the train tunnel. The view was beautiful but it was a bit heart-wrenching.
====He shook his head and dried his tears, slapping his cheeks after.
====Get a hold of yourself, Wilhelm.
====No time to cry now, it’s adventure time!
==== With a resolute idea in mind, he pushed himself from the window, grabbed his trunk, and started looking for somewhere to situate himself. He generally didn’t have a clear direction of the interior so he mindlessly wandered for a while, hoping to come across something appealing as soon as possible. He may have gotten kicked out a few compartments but that was nothing. Eventually, he stumbled upon a room with a door that was slightly ajar.
==== Wilhelm curiously looked around the hall for any signs of life, having found nothing, he opened the sliding door with as much excitement as a dog had. He didn’t bother to check the inside of the compartment first.
====”Helloooo! Anyone in haur’? if naebody’ is, I’m gonnae’ tak' over thiiis bit ay’ space. Looks real braw and cozy as well!—“ He noted as he stepped in then promptly looked down, he shrieked in surprise, “BY MERLINS TIT! I didn’t notice ye’ there!”

"Helloooo! Anyone in haur’? if naebody’ is, I’m gonnae’ tak' over thiiis bit ay’ space. Looks real braw and cozy as well!—" He noted as he stepped in then promptly looked down, he shrieked in surprise, “BY MERLINS TIT! I didn’t notice ye’ there!”
Qrow stared, eyes narrowed, at the new occupant of the carriage. The dim lighting of the carriage lit up their face ominously, causing their eyes to almost glow an acidic sort of green. Qrow had learned early on that the general toxic glow that surrounded their eyes (A common trait of the Beithir family) seemed to unsettle people, due to the fact that it gave the family a certain uncanny likeness to a snake.
If you asked Qrow it was rather ironic considering a Beither was a mythological snake...
“Hmph - Well you're real bloody eloquent, aren't you...” It wasn’t a question, but a statement, powered by their anger at the disruption. Before getting comfortable with their book, they had longed for company, but now that they had it, they couldn’t help but be irritated. The book of magical beasts that lay discarded on their lap was practically calling to them.
Running their hands through the curling locks of ginger on their head, they relaxed their glare (not that it helped them look any kinder) and let out a deep sigh. The sooner this stranger got out of the entryway to the carriage and shut the door, the sooner they could get back to reading.
I suppose not much harm can come from allowing a fellow first year sit with me. Besides, father said that I had to make friends…
“Well, what are you waiting for? I can’t imagine there's much more room anywhere else - if you’d rather stand awkwardly in the hallway, close the door behind you, but otherwise, sit wherever you want, though I’m not moving so you’ll just have to manage.”
The young first year knew that they sounded mean, but they couldn’t really bring themself to care. If they were going to make friends then it would be on their own terms, and the people that they surrounded themself with would have to get used to their rude temperament.
“Well?”

====The young first year knew that they sounded mean, but they couldn’t really bring themself to care. If they were going to make friends then it would be on their own terms, the people that they surrounded themself with would have to get used to their rude temperament.
===="Well?”
====Wilhelm was holding onto the door frame with one hand and balancing his cargo with the other, keeping the bags steady enough that if they slipped from his grasp, the contents wouldn’t fall out onto the ground. He tilted his head to one side and eyed the adolescent settled on the floor with an inquisitive look. There was a distinct air of distrust hanging around the other first-year that was both unnerving and somehow amusing to Wilhelm at the same time. The youth greatly reminded him of, well, a viper— rather, a Basilisk. Instead of bright green scales, they sported a gaunt-like complexion and had slightly pointed ears that resembled the tip of a rattlesnake’s tail.
====The most baffling part about their appearance, though, was their candid chartreuse eyes. It was quite eerie seeing something like that staring back at them. Much less narrowed in slits of annoyance (could Wilhelm detect the slight chance of hostility?) and framed by chopped ringlets of crimson-topped hair, which contrasted sharply with the white of their eyes. The only thing that Wilhelm concluded was average was the specks of freckles dotting their skin. There were many things they shared based on appearance, he realized. The sole difference they had was the color of their irises and a few small details in their facial structure.
====Now, that was unordinary. He wondered what kind of genes garnered those traits as a result.
====Wilhelm blinked slowly a couple of times, bringing back his attention to the present situation. The mysterious stranger appeared to be waiting for a reply or some sort of acknowledgment.
====Oh yeah, right.
====Introductions, introductions.
====Wilhelm mentally chided himself before continuing to tread past the barrier of the compartment threshold and into the cubby. “I prefer tae’ think I’m more of ay’ facile an’ poetic sort than th’ clear an’ effective kind...” He playfully quipped, his mouth quirking upwards to form a crooked grin. His graphite-colored eyes crinkled up with mirth when his remark met no immediate response. “But, I can be quite persuasive! Ah, reckon y’don’t wanna see that, though. Only reserved for emergencies!” He added in a sing-song voice with an overly melodramatic wink.
====As the door creaked closed behind him, he took in the sight of the enclosed area. The carriage was fairly large but sparsely furnished, as such, only two cushioned three-person seats sat opposite facing each other. A medium-sized window took up the middle section of the wall and displayed the occasional glimpse of the countryside. The walls of the compartment weren’t much better either, simply painted tan and covered with marks from previous students from the past decades. Most of these marks were in the shape of various imprints and writing that he couldn’t make heads or tails of.
===="Y'know, usually fowks' would usually greit' strangers first 'en invite em' in politely then gab an' whatnot," He mused aloud. It was a bit tricky trying to steer around the juvenile, who seemed content to be sprawled out on the floor, but Wilhelm managed. He placed his luggage on one of the seats and plopped down on top of the other, shifting around to get comfortable. Once he was settled, and by that, had laid down vertically with his back against the wall with his legs stretched out in front of him, he resumed without a beat,"I guess 'at works too! I'd geive' it a solid seven point five out o' ten for bein' shadowy and for almost givin' me a heart attack while at it. Not bowfin' for a bloke who scared me fo' their first impression! It's kinda' hard ta' be oan guard when you're in a train goin' to ay' magical school for witchcraft an' wizardry. Ain't exactly a guid' mix for anxiety an' excitement!" Wilhelm wiggled his fingers at the other youth, laughing jovially right after.
===="Now, where was I goin' wi' these? Oh!" His face lit up when he remembered. "Th' name's Wilhelm Whitakeer! Half-blood if ye' waur' wonderin'. I know how fowks get wi' them statuses." The scot personally didn't care for it himself, given his heritage was split between wizard descent and mildly to none. In this context, he felt somewhat fortunate to have the ability to do magic. "And you? Can't tell by th' accent, but ye' sound twitcher tha' most fowks' I've ever talked to!"
====After the gloominess from the departure, it felt good to be joking around again. Wilhelm thought that this would be a great way to pass the next few hours. He didn't particularly enjoy being idle and silent for long periods of time, and being cooped up in a cramped train with little room to move or talk wasn't all that great. Even reading books could get tiring after a while. Speaking of books… he glanced at the cover of the book that rested in their hands.

Finally taking actual note of the intruder in the doorway, they noted the similarities between them. Like Qrow, the boy sported some unruly auburn hair and freckle mottled skin, however where Qrow was pale with a seemingly permanent scowl, the boy before them had sun-kissed skin and a mouth that seemingly rested in a playful half smile. The biggest contrast however was the eyes, which briefly reminded Qrow of the stormy grey clouds that resided almost permanently in the sky back home, and seemed to rest at a slanted squint - almost as if he couldn’t quite see properly.
Maybe it was that that inhibited him from being properly intimidated by the first-years glare, and actually taking the offer of sitting in the carriage with them…
The child watched as the boy awkwardly manoeuvred around them, talking as he did.
"Y'know, usually fowks' would usually greit' strangers first 'en invite em' in politely then gab an' whatnot," After getting himself settled, they had half expected - half hoped - for that to be the end of it. They would share the compartment until they got off the train, where they would part ways. Obviously, fate had other plans
Yea, well fate is a temperamental bitch…
The boy seemed quite content in carrying on this one sided conversation, even chastising them for their lack of manners - Qrow had never cared much for pleasantries and manners, however much their father tried to teach them the importance of them - however they were most confused at the stranger taking the offer, even being oddly impressed by the child's apparently ‘frightening’ first impression - even going as far as to grade them on it?
Seven point five? I deserve a nine at worst. A ten would be more deserved, considering I never even flinched at that ungodly shriek…
Never much for social interaction, having been homeschooled for the past eleven years, the redhead hadn't really expected someone to take to them this quickly. Or at least they were assuming that's what was happening. Was this how friends worked?
Qrow would never admit it out loud, but it was rather refreshing to have the company of someone who called it how they saw it - the boy in front of them seeming to be rather content in being a blunt and honest individual. To hell with it, if they were going to have friends, they could certainly appreciate this kind of quality in them, but that didn't mean Qrow was going to be nice.
"Qrow Beithir, pronouns they/them, pure-blood. I'm from the North-East." Qrow stated coldly, before stopping, and noticing that the boy's gaze had lowered to the book in their lap.
If this lad doesn't like magical beasts, I'm kicking him out of this bloody carriage…
The first year glanced, eyes momentarily narrowing, back up at the boy before taking a breath and closing the book and showing him the front cover.
"Fantastic beasts and where to find them. Newt Scamander - one of me dads works in the ministry, creating laws to help protect magical creatures, got me interested in them. Me favourite has to be the thestral though, bit morbid, but I think tha' they're misunderstood, not their fault you can only see em after seeing death, and me Mam says they're trained to pull the carriages at Hogwarts." Before they knew it, Qrow was off on a roll, their slight Scottish accent making itself known the more passionately they talked about the creatures.
Finally it hit them that they were rambling, their eyes widening, and their mouth snapping audibly shut before they quickly composed themself, going back to their earlier demeanour, looking out the door in hopes of a distraction.
Where's that bloody trolley lady - a cauldron cake and some pumpkin juice would be a welcome distraction right about now, maybe I ought to throw a pumpkin pasty at him too, that might stop this conversation…

=====
Rose’s heart was nearly pounding out of her ribcage with excitement, making her a little bit breathless as she strolled around the aisles of the train. She found it hard to accept what was happening at the moment; everything was moving too fast, and nothing was making any sense. She felt her hands begin to tremble, and clenched them into fists to try to suppress them. A flash of recognition suddenly flashed through her mind. Earlier before their departure, Rose was hugging her brother on the Platform 9 3/4 with all she had in her.
Her eyes had been watery from tears, and she’d squeezed him so tightly until he patted for her to stop. She apologized, of course, but when he told her that this was her last chance to be able to show affection without feeling guilty, Rose couldn’t help but smile. Her brother had always made her feel like the world she lived wasn’t so scary anymore. Since birth, he had coached her how to walk, talk, and count properly— anything that was necessary for her education, he taught her with enthusiasm. And as far as Rose could tell, he was more of a parent to her than their actual parents.
Maybe that was why she tried to pull away as quickly as possible. Because if she didn’t get away now, she wouldn’t have the courage later to do just that. Her brother meant everything to her and she didn’t want to let him see the hurt and hesitation in her eyes as she glanced towards the Hogwarts Express. While Rose began uwrapping herself from their shared cuddle, her brother started to bawl in earnest. She tried to comforting him, telling him not to cry and promising that she would owl him every week.
But that only made her brother cry harder.
Rose shook her head at the memory, giggling softly as she skipped past a compartment.
"Fantastic beasts and where to find them. Newt Scamander - one of me dads works in the ministry, creating laws to help protect magical creatures, got me interested in them. Me favourite has to be the thestral though, bit morbid, but I think tha' they're misunderstood, not their fault you can only see em after seeing death, and me Mam says they're trained to pull the carriages at Hogwarts."
She halted in her tracks upon hearing a voice coming from inside the cubby. Voices meant people, people meant potential friends, and potential friends meant…
Rose took a few steps back, her vibrant pink coils bouncing along her shoulders. Slowly, carefully, she peered into the compartment. There were two first-years sitting inside and they both looked like they could pass off as a pair twins. It was evident in their identical burgundy colored strands and freckled skin, but one looked more older than the other. The youngest of the two bore an irritated and sour face and the oldest looked purely entertained by the outcome.
She slid the door open and smiled brightly, waving politely to the two juniors. “Hello! I apologize for interrupting your conversation but could I join you two? Nearly every room in this train is packed to the brim and I’m afraid this is one of the last ones vacant.”

===="Qrow Beithir?" Wilhelm echoed, carefully experimenting the name of his new companion on his tongue. His dimming curiosity flared at hearing the odd name, It was very unlikely that he would be familiar with the surname. Especially since it sounded a lot like the names of other ancient and noble wizard families, the Selwyn family being perhaps the best example of that. It must've taken some talent to obtain the name from such an antique branch; the mere idea prompted him to wonder about what Qrow's parents may be like. "Like the burd'? 'Reckon 'at explains th' speech, then! Grew up all fancy an' frolickin' in th' meadows, did ye'?"
===="Sayin’ that's not a bad thin' fer anyone! I used tae' dash through thes' huge forest by mah' house, huge boughs 'n everythin'," Wilhelm made an exaggerated flourish, gesturing wildly as he casually babbled away, "I'd spend hours swatching fer critters in there! Sometimes fer small ones like kneazles and hares. Th' other times, a giant puddock in th' loch— crivvens, spooked mah' sisters for weeks wi' those slimy things." He cracked up at the memories, recalling his father's reaction whenever he chased after his screaming siblings with a toad in his hands. Needless to say, when his mother found out; her response to his tomfoolery was less than ideal.
====Moreso, the aftermath of revenge from his sisters was absolutely heinous to endure the following morning after he got ungrounded.
====Wilhelm gradually quietened down once Qrow launched into a rant after spotting him, not-so-discreetly, looking over at the cover of their book. In some way, he found a sense of peace within their words. Words that weren’t barred with thorns and iron bars for the first time since he sauntered into the compartment. He listened attentively, finding himself genuinely transfixed in whatever Qrow was saying— noticing the brief slip of accent for a split second. When they suddenly paused and returned to their same dismal zeal, he opened his mouth to speak.
====Then Wilhelm perked up, as the cogs began turning in his mind, his realization came to fruition.
====He leaned towards them excitedly, nearly falling over in the process. He managed to catch himself, albeit harrowingly, and held onto the sill of the window with his alternative on the edge of the seat. The reflection of the light from the windowpane gave the boy's murky and slate-grey eyes the illusion of a twinkle, swirling with renewed fascination at the well-acquainted cadence.
====Now this.
====This, he knows.
====”Aren’t they?" He uttered out, it was hushed, barely above a mumur, but it was dripping with awe and admiration. There was a certain kind of innocence and reverence in his tone that left no doubt as to how he felt about the chosen topic of interest. It was almost as if Qrow had pretty much just gave him a chest full of galleons and rescued his loved ones from a fire with how ecstatic he was about the matter. “I reid’ somewhaur’ that they’re caurnivores’ an' that they’re diet mostly makes up o’ prey whose primary locomotive is usually flight— They also said Thestrals are attracted tae’ blood lik’ how an’ ant is tae’ sugar an’ can even smell it from a hundred yards away! Ain’t that wicked?”
====“I think I reid’ 'at from ay’ an uncreditable source so don’t tak' mah’ words seriously for naught.“ Wilhelm’s lips stretched into a wide grin, visibly buzzing in sheer delight. However, they soon morphed into incredulity. The mention of their parents’ occupations in the magical government of the Wizarding world had caught him off-guard. Well, that solves his previous question. Must’ve been a pure-blood thing then. “Wait. Hold oan’. There’s bloody thestrals in Hogwarts? One of yer’ dads works for th’ Ministry o’ Magic? By Merlin’s saggy keks, ye’ can gettae’ away wi' anythin' scot-free?! Do you know if—“

He knew there were other children traveling to Hogwarts with them but the thought of another person joining them hadn't even crossed his mind. He gave a subtle jerk of his head, how could he forget? Looking at the newcomer, he arched a brow and jokingly shot an accusing look at her. “Awh, ye’ coldn’ let us have ay’ body o’ moment alone? What if I had somethin' important tae’ tell em’? ====“Bah! ‘We waur’ just in th' wey’ o’ gettin’ comfortable too.” Wilhelm lamented with false disappointment, feigning a deeply saddened face. He then slid back to his seat properly and patted the spot beside him eagerly, “Aaanyways, come oan’ in! ‘Suppose ye’ can make yerself comfy, yeah? What about ye’, laddie oan’ th' floor? New Beginnings:

The girl in the doorway had dark chocolatey skin and hair in a flamboyant shade of pink that hung in pretty coils around her neck and down her back. Her emerald eyes crinkled with her smile as she spoke.
“Hello! I apologise for interrupting your conversation but could I join you two? Nearly every room in this train is packed to the brim and I’m afraid this is one of the last ones vacant.”
Whilst thankful for the distraction from their, frankly, embarrassing bout of ramblings, Qrow couldn't say that they were impressed about another student entering the carriage.
Hopefully she'll leave…
“Aaanyways, come oan’ in! ‘Suppose ye’ can make yerself comfy, yeah?"
Obviously, Qrow needed to get better at listening, having missed whatever it was the boy - what was his name again - Wil-something, had said to this girl. Either way, now he was inviting her in, and that meant that… wait… another person might be just what they needed, the other two first years could talk amongst themselves and Qrow… whilst they wouldn't necessarily be able to read their book with all their talking, it might be nice to just listen to them. They had always enjoyed people watching.
“What about ye’, laddie oan’ th' floor? Feelin’' ay’ tad knackered from th' bumps? We’ve got a whooole seat haur’ waitin’ tae be sat oan’! …'at kinda sounds weird now 'at I said it”
Whilst Qrow wasn't uncomfortable on the floor, even preferring it, after Wil had come in and knocked them about after their refusal to move so he could get in, it was probably for the best that they sat on one of the seats.
Standing up and stretching their limbs, their full height came to a littoe taller that 5 ft 2, making them much taller than the average first year and much closer to the height of a fully grown adult.
After picking up their book, Qrow opted for the other window seat, neatly curling into themself, back pressed against the wall, knees drawn up to their chest and wrapped in their arms on which they rested their head.
Peering curiously at the girl in the doorway, they motioned one of their hands to the other seats, before motioning to themself.
"Qrow Beithir, they/them.” They motioned to the boy opposite them
“Tha's Wil Whitakeer. If ye diven't like magical creatures, ye can leave now." Qrow stated plainly.
There was no need for niceties, if they were going to have friends, they'd have to get used to their blunt abrasiveness.
Tilting their head to peer out the window, they watched as verdant fields rolled by. It would still be a while until they got to Hogwarts and the excitement that they had earlier was starting to wear off - likely due to their rapidly decreasing social battery at all the social interaction - and tiredness was starting to settle in. Soon their breathing evened out and they fell asleep.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The train jostled as it came to a stop and the first year awoke.
This was it...
