Just as her left foot took a step onto the fresh grass of Hogwarts, Ciel knew she was ready for spring. It was lukewarm outside, her fingers pressed themselves together in the pockets of her brother's jacket. She had yet to receive an angry letter from Dion, so it was safe to say that he still hadn't realized she had stashed it in her trunk and brought it to Hogwarts.
As well as her hands, her pet rat Ginger Ale was stashed in her pockets. The little guy had found his new home inside of this one specific jacket- he would regularly sleep in it instead of joining her around the school.
The warm sun on her face made her give a dopey smiley. Soon, there would be no news of winter and snow, and she would be able to spend all day outside! Not to mention, with spring around the corner, summer would soon follow- which meant it would soon be time to go home and see her beloved horse. That thought excited Ciel more than the lack of snow.
Her feet kept carrying her until Ciel found herself dancing around the lake in the warm sun. Humming to herself as her feet kept swaying to the song she was singing in particular. Her eyes closed and she kept swaying, until she accidently smacked head-first into a tree. What a way to go, Ciel!
She stumbled down to the ground, holding her hand to her forehead. Ugh, hopefully it didn't bruise! Ginger Ale quickly peeked out of his home in the pocket of her jacket- but after assessing that nothing was really wrong with the situation, he slipped back down to sleep some more. What a jerk! Can't you see the best cowboy in the world is clearly upset?

Valarie was overjoyed to be outside. The fresh air was already beginning to work wonders for the tired Ravenclaw. It was beautiful outside with wonderful temperatures and the sun shine down on her. She wandered outside and drew close to the lake. She sat down on the side of the lake and smiled down at the blue waters. Her head jolted to the side when she heard the sound of someone running into something. Her eyes found a pretty girl in hufflepuff girl. She was close to a tall tree so Valarie assumed she had either tripped or had fallen into the tree. She stood and rushed over to make sure she was alright. She noticed a gray blue dart into her pocket as she approached. She cleared her throat quietly before starting to speak.
“Hello! Are you okay? I saw you trip or fall or whatever happened over here.” She smiled at the girl and reached out her arm to help her up. “I’m Valarie, first year Ravenclaw. You can call me Val if you want.” The girl must have been a first year. She was the same height as Valarie and had dark blonde hair with beautiful light shade brown. Valarie brushed back her mess of curly hair and wished she had thought to pull it away from her face before coming outside.

Ciel grumbled as she looked up at the tree she had just smacked herself on- it was a tall evergreen tree with pines that fell down around her as she fell. The tree was pretty, but it wasn't time to think about the sturdiness of the tree, someone was approaching! Quick, she had to interact with them and seem like she hadn't hit herself face-first!
"Oh, pshh, I'm totally fine. This tree-" she motioned to the evergreen. "-has nothing on me!" Though she talked big game, Ciel still clung onto the girl's arm to pull herself up. As she stood up straight, her feet faltered for a moment as she got a good look at the girl who had come to help.
There was one thing that Ciel knew for sure, she thought girls were pretty. But when she caught the eyes of the girl- Valarie- it was like her world became swirled and turned upside down! Curly brown hair and soft eyes, not to mention freckles, a feat Ciel found to be adorable.
Upon realizing she was staring with wide eyes, Ciel quickly coughed and looked around. "I'm Ciel, a first year pufflehuff-" she scrunched her eyebrows, and then retracted her statement. "Wait, no, Hufflepuff. Yeah, right. I'm a Hufflepuff." How. Embarrassing! The encounter made Ciel mentally facepalm, no way she had just called herself a pufflehuff.
Choosing to ignore the rising color in her face, Ciel decided to change the subject. "So! Val, um, how's uh, Hogwarts so far?" Another mental facepalm, no way was that an interesting topic. Why was it so hard for Ciel to think straight?

The girl acted like the tree hadn’t hurt her in the least but she seemed to definitely need Valarie’s help getting up. Valarie waited until she was sure she was standing until she let go. She stumbled for a second when Valarie let go but caught herself before Valarie could offer her her arm to balance herself. The girl then introduced herself. Her name was Ciel. Valarie thought her name was beautiful immediately.
“Think I could call you Seal?” Valarie grinned, hardly able to keep herself from laughing. Valarie held back her laughter when Ciel called herself a pufflehuff.
“Pufflehuff, huh? Well you must be pretty special to get sorted into a nonexistent house!” Valarie giggled. Ciel corrected herself to say she was a Hufflepuff quickly. Ciel’s face became a light pink shade and then she asked what she thought about Hogwarts so far and Valarie smiled, thinking.
“Well the food is pretty good,” she laughed before continuing. “I like it so far. What about you?” She asked Ciel. Valarie wasn’t sure why she was so excited to hear Ciel’s response. Valarie was hardly able to keep her hands at her side. She couldn’t figure out why she was so nervous. There was something about Ciel that…was interesting to her but she couldn’t put her finger out it.

It had taken Ciel a moment to realize the pun Val had made, but after she processed what Val said, she closed her eyes and tried to hide a small smile. "That was such a bad joke, I hope you know that." Seal was kind of fitting though, maybe she should empathize with the animals more. They were super cute animals though. Not that her favorite animal could ever be anything but a horse!
"If I'm a seal, then are you Valentine's day?" Ciel giggled at her own bad pun. Val was an easy name to make jokes out of. Valentine's, value, valid, valor, wait- just how many words started with those three letters? Maybe Ciel should ask her English teacher, surely that old prude woman would know! She changed the subject of her mind, just thinking of her old teacher could easily sour her mood.
"I like Hogwarts too!" Ciel focused back on Val. "I miss my home though." She shoved her hands back into the varsity jacket and looked onto the lake. She wanted to look back at Val, but she knew if she did, her words would fumble and her face would turn red. Why did this always happen?
Taking a risk, Ciel turned around and offered a smile. "But Hogwarts is nice! You're- you said you're a Ravenclaw, right? What's it like up there? I bet it gets chilly when a storm starts." She was really starting to just say whatever she could think of in order to fill the silence.

Valarie laughter burst out when Ciel commented on her bad pun. “Don’t worry! I definitely know. Valentine’s Day. The day of love. You know that is just as bad a joke as Seal, right?” Valarie laughed. Ciel made it so easy to loosen up for whatever reason…. Valarie ignored the thoughts of how cool Ciel was and just tried to focus on her response. Like Valarie, Ciel liked Hogwarts but she missed her home. She turned away from Valarie and immediately she began to worry she was getting bored of talking to Valarie. Valarie tried to think of something else to say but nothing came to mind. Thankfully, Ciel turned back around before Valarie could get too panicked.
“Yes, Ravenclaw. It is pretty nice up there. I like watching out the window when a storm starts,” Valarie explained to Ciel.
“And you’re a Hufflepuff? What is it like being a Hufflepuff?” She asked Ciel. Once again, Valarie was excited to hear from Ciel. She felt her hand’s twitching, itching to start her nervous habit, but she continued to force them to stay at her side. She kept worrying that Ciel was getting bored of talking to her. Suddenly, everything hit Valarie. She liked Ciel. She was so nervous it had to be it. She felt a bit calmer knowing she liked Ciel but she still felt nervous. What if Ciel doesn’t feel the same? she thought. She started thinking of ways to keep talking to Ciel, to avoid going back inside Hogwarts. Her lips formed a smile she couldn’t stop from appearing as she looked at Ciel.

"You like looking out at the storm?" Ciel asked. "I get all freaked out whenever a storm is brewing." Her 'fear' of storms wasn't actually out of fear for herself, she didn't really mind the loud booming thunder or the crackling lightning, but the animals at the farm always jittered and freaked. It seemed polite to be afraid on their behalf.
Moving on from her thoughts of fearful farm animals, Ciel thought about what it was like to be a Hufflepuff. It was always warm in the common room, which meant she was constantly sleepy once she walked through the door. She liked the other Hufflepuffs her age, though. They were nice and warm, kind of like the common room itself. There was no need to ramble, she should reply to the conversation.
"I don't mind it, I guess? Maybe I just don't think of myself as a Hufflepuff. The common room is nice, though." Unsure of her own response, Ciel flicked her fingers. There should really be something else she could bring up. Would it be her horses or cows-? But how would Val react? She remembered Hannah's response, the chipper Gryffindor whose family didn't seem nearly as interested in the farm life as Ciel was.
Was there an event going on? Well, besides the ball- but that would be kind of weird to bring up to Val. A pang in Ciel's chest as her lips pressed into a fine line- how nice would it be to ask Valarie to the ball? Mentally, she shook her head. That really wasn't how this conversation should go, though. Ciel was more than aware of the fact that most girls didn't like girls the way she did.
"So..." Ciel trailed off, trying to come up with some other kind of conversation starter. "Uh... the spring ball? Are you... going?" Wow, what a way to completely not talk about the ball! Way to go, cowboy! "I mean, I myself only heard about it recently- some older students were talking about it. I know that some students from other schools are going to come to Hogwarts during it. Haha, I bet they're all scrambling to ask someone! Man, if my brothers were here, they'd probably be taken up like piranhas! I know they're really popular at the muggle school they go to."
Unable to stop herself from ranting, Ciel droned on for another moment about her siblings before realizing exactly what she had said. No way she just asked Val if she knew about the ball- any student with a brain would! And then she totally rambled about her stupid brothers; if she had any chance at seeming cool, she definitely lost it now.

Valarie grinned when Ciel seemed shocked that she liked watching rain put down the windows of common room and hearing the sound of thunder roaring up ahead.
“Yeah I guess. There’s just something so… interesting about the rain to me.” Valarie grew worried again when Ciel didn’t talk for a few moments. She’s probably just thinking. she tried telling herself but as each moment passed Valarie grew more and more worried that Ciel didn’t want to talk to her anymore. Thankfully, Ciel told her about being a Hufflepuff before Valarie could freak out about Ciel being quiet too much. Ciel fell quiet again but Valarie herself was thinking. Maybe Ciel is going to the ball. I should ask if she’s going with anyone. Valarie was unsure what Ciel would even say if she asked her to the ball. Maybe she just liked her as a friend. Valarie was shocked when Ciel was the first to ask her about the ball.
“Yes! Sorry I mean no- I’m not sure. A-are you going to the ball? I mean if your not going with anyone m-maybe we could go together?” Valarie was taken aback by her words. Had she really just asked Ciel to the ball? Valarie was tempted to turn and run inside so she wouldn’t be embarrassed to much more. For some reason, she stayed. She was nervous and excited to hear Ciel’s reaction to her invite. Valarie someone felt…calm, somehow. Like a huge weight had been lifted off of her. Now she didn’t have to worry about what Ciel felt about her. She would find out her and now.

By the way, if you'd like to do a thread where Ciel and Valarie hangout and pick out the outfits they plan on wearing for the ball, I'm totally down!
Despite the fact that Ciel was still worried about droning on about her annoying brothers, she was surprised to see Val not phased at all. Okay, maybe Val didn't think that talking about her older brothers having some copious amount of charisma was weird! Ugh, if only Ciel was like the twins, then maybe she could hold herself together while talking to Val- and not melt into a puddle of confusing emotions.
Though she was admittedly wallowing in her own pity, everything stopped when Valarie answered Ciel's question. It took her a second or two to process exactly what Val had said. Was Ciel going to the ball? Would she want to go with Val? Her mind blanked, her eyelashes fluttered for a moment, and her eyebrow quirked up.
And then she covered her mouth and giggled, and while the response was a bit awkward, the situation called for Ciel to laugh a bit. She hoped Val wouldn't take her laughing the wrong way, but there was something so sweet and endearing about the way the Ravenclaw asked. Even with a slightly apprehensive ask, it still made Ciel's stomach fly with butterflies.
"I mean, sure! If you're gonna go, then I wanna be the one you go with, ya know?" Ciel paused her giggles to respond. She hoped her response didn't seem super 'I'm like crazy for girls and I think you're like really pretty!' but with how scrambled her mind was with the question Val had asked, she really didn't know just how she came across.
"Oh gosh, if I'm gonna go to the ball, then I need a dress... or a tux! I'm sure someone in my family has either." Ciel worried about it for a moment, but then remembered her mother's obsession with dressing her daughter up like a princess. There was definitely a dress or two she could borrow. And her father had attended some award ceremonies- and her brothers had too! Realistically, there was nothing for her to worry about. "Uh, do we have to color coordinate- probably right? I guess it's kind of early to be asking these questions but my family has a lot of formal wear for a farm family."

Ciel started to laugh and Valarie immediately started wondering if she had made a mistake by asking her to the ball. The one time I try to be brave… she thought. Her thoughts stopped short when Ciel agreed. Valarie processed what Ciel had said. She wanted to be the one she went with? Did… did that possibly mean she liked Val? Valarie noticeably sighed with relief. But then her thoughts started to race. What would people think of two girls going to the ball together? What would her sister think? She stopped those types of thoughts from ruining the one important thought she was having: she was going to the ball with Ciel Saskia, the girl she liked. Ciel started talking about what to wear to the ball but Valarie could hardly make out her words over the sounds of her mind racing and jumping up and down while screaming with joy that Ciel was going with her to the ball.
“S-sorry what? I kind of zoned out- I was just so excited about he fact we were actually going to the ball together!” Valarie cringed. Ciel probably thought she was so weird. Valarie knew this would be the moment when Ciel could start laughing at her and tell her it was all a joke.
