Sorting Ceremony

We were lead through the great big doors and into the great hall. There everyone was waiting for us. There were four long tables stretching across the room filled with people. You could easily tell for the four different houses. There is lots of food- a feast waiting for us. We stood there waiting for further instructions. Just looking at this place I was starting to think that this place- Hogwarts, was going to be really great.
The ceiling looked like the night sky but it was really just an amazing enchantment. Just below there were hundreds of floating candles that lit up the room. I stood next to my new friend Dakota. On the train I asked her which house she thought was the best. We both agreed on Gryffindor being the best but Ravenclaw and Slytherin being a close second. Kinsey was so excited that her legs were shaking. She looked out into the great hall and sitting in the Ravenclaw section was her brother, Walter. And not too hard to find was her sister, Genevive. They were both smiling wide at her. She wasn’t nervous in any way. Why would she be? Her brother is a fourth year and has already told her all about Hogwarts. It’s not scary at all. “This is going to be great.” I kept telling myself. About five minutes after all of us stepped into the great hall the headmaster stepped up to his audience. Everyone quieted down.

"Welcome first year students. I am Solomon Lear, Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. As it is our tradition here we are going to engage in our first ceremony known as the sorting ceremony. The sorting hat has been a part of our school's tradition since the time of Godric Gryffindor, one of this institution's founding wizards. This hat is very much sentient."

“Sentient, I am intelligent”

A voice came out of nowhere. All of the first years looked at each other, all of us puzzled. Who is speaking?

They brought out an old looking hat that seemed to be… speaking?!

Of course!

The sorting hat, I thought.

The Headmaster continued to explain:

"Sorting Hat will be placed upon your head. It won't hurt one bit. The Sorting Hat will look into your heart and mind and determine the best place for you: Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff. As most of you must know, each of those houses possesses their own characteristic, their own values and their own Head of House."

They called each name up one by one.

AVA WINCHET
Slytherin!

Then more…

CHARLIE JACOBSEN
Ravenclaw!

And more…

DAKOTA RAIN
Gryffindor!

And then they called my name.

KINSEY JONES

I walked up nervously and glanced at all of my family and friends. I sat down in front of everyone. This is it. This is the moment when I find out what house I’m in. I only wanted one thing. “Please be Gryffindor… Please be Gryffindor!” I thought to myself.

The Headmaster grabbed the hat and carefully placed in on my head. Within seconds of putting it on the hat yelled out…

GRYFFINDOR!

The crowd cheered- especially the Gryffindor section. I walked over to the Gryffindor table with a big smile on my face. Of course walking with confidence. I sat next to Gen and Dakota. “Congratulations!” Gen whispered to me. “Thanks!” I said. I couldn’t wait to send a letter to Mum and Dad. Dakota grinned at me. “This is going to be a great year.” I said to myself again. And I really meant it.
