Dearest Mother and Father -
My first night at Hogwarts was quite eventful and interesting. Hogwarts is just as awe inspiring as you have always told me, and the ceiling of the Great Hall is simply delightful. Sorting was rather surprising. Several of the other first years from good, Pureblooded families were placed in Hufflepuff and Gryffindor. The Hat seemed to be in an odd mood. One such first year who should have really been placed in Slytherin was myself. I was rather surprised at it, and a bit disappointed, since I had terribly hoped for Slytherin like you and all the other Becketts before me, but so far, it seems to being going alright.

We are most disappointed. Both in the Sorting Hat's decision and in yours. It is widely known that the Hat does know what house you truly belong in, but does take your opinion into account. Based on this, there must have been a part of you that truly wanted to be in Gryffindor. All we can advise you to do now is make certain your house does not begin to rub off on you. The very last thing any of us want is another Amelia.

My Dear Parents -
I am ever so sorry for the rather delayed response! I've been quite consumed with homework and classes, as well as a few other things. I've made several friends in my dorm, and I've seen some of my other friends such as Daniel and Aravis. Hogwarts is quite lovely overall. Flying class is simply thrilling, and History of Magic has an actual teacher now! He's quite interesting in my opinion. The charms teacher is also simply delightful and she gives us baked goods during class!
I also wanted to tell you that I joined the Gryffindor House paper! I know that you advised not to get too involved in the House, but I thought that it would be an excellent way to improve my writing skills.
Alas, I hear the call for dinner.

We assume you already know this, but your good friend Daniel was sorted into Slytherin. Did you know he and your father have exchanged several letters in the time it has taken you to get back to us? In my opinion, he has matured into a delightful young man and I do believe you agree with that assessment! We expect his parents are quite proud of him and his sorting. We do still hope that the two of you can continue your close friendship despite your house debacle.

As for your involvement in Gryffindor House anything, we strongly advise against it. This includes the newspaper, the Quidditch team, and do your best not to get attached to other Gryffindors. Your future is still possible, as long as you don't cling to the Gryffindor label too much.

Did you receive our previous letter? If so, why pray tell did you neglect to reply for the past week? We do hope that you have a valid reason and you are not simply ignoring your parents. Such behavior is highly immature and beneath any well-bred Beckett lady, which is what we assume you aspire to be.
Our advice from our last letter still applies - do not cling to the Gryffindor identity. Do not join any house activities, stick with school-wide things. We really are looking out for you and we do know best.
Do reply soon as we are eager to hear more about school.

I'm sorry that I worried you in my failure to reply to your recent letters. I truly have meant to reply and have simply been quite swamped with schoolwork and activities. You'll be satisfied to hear that I have gotten perfect marks in all of my classes so far.
You'll also be pleased to hear that I'm planning to start a ballet club at Hogwarts. I have practiced on my own quite a bit, but it simply isn't the same as dancing in a class. I'll let you know details as I make more progress with organizing things.

You should ask your good friend, Daniel, to help you with things. The two of you have always worked quite well together, and Daniel has always been the better leader out of the two of you. Yes, we'll have to insist that he is a part of it. We'll speak to his parents about it. Hearing that the two of you are going to be working closely together brings us no small amount of pleasure.

My ballet club is well underway and Daniel and I have begun to discuss some of the details. I do wish that you wouldn't insist he assist me, as this is something I would like to undertake on my own, but I understand your reasoning.
A few friends have begun to call me Ana and I actually rather like it. I understand what your opinions on nicknames are, but I personally rather like it. Anyways, it's not like there is very much I can do about what people do and do not call me.
