When Lara complimented on Dot's favorite pen, she grinned enthusiastically at her. Nobody from Hogwarts had commented on her pen yet, except Lara. Sure, they have asked what a pen is, and how it works, but nobody actually complimented. "Thanks," She replied with a rather short word, but it was full of meaning and joy.
As a habit, Dot brushed back her hair with her slender fingers, tucking dark locks behind her ear. She stared at her pen for a minute, examining it's delicate design. Blue mostly, with brown bronze linings on it. It was a cute combinition, perfect for a Ravenclaw.
Dot always knew that from inside, she was a Ravenclaw. Sorting her in Gryffindor was one of the Sorting Hat's utter mistakes. Dot had ever been so introvert in her life, never speaking much with strangers, except for some exceptions. A person who is afraid of talking - and cockroaches - can't be a Gryffindor, right? The lion kids are all brave, roaring things.
And besides, Dot was very creative. An original daydreamer, a hard worker, academically super successful. The whole week she's been at Hogwarts, she had recieved all Outstandings, except for two Exceeds Expectations. Dot was even a perfect brainstormer.
Which is so Ravenclaw.
Shaking her head slightly, Dot pushed the thoughts of sorting to the back of her mind, when Lara spoke up:

Dot shrugged slightly, but answered anyway. "Well, for starters, I knew how I'm going to be if I don't sleep right after the dinner for at least two hours." Dot said, looking rather carefree, which was unusual for her. "So I slept, waking up near eleven. I admit, I was a bit groggy at first, but after paying a visit to the lavatory and reading some chapters of a favorite novel, I felt all good and energized." Dot paused, then added in, "And yeah, I also had a sweet cupcake - carbohydrates, you know, instant energy.""How are you so… Awake?”
"When I die, I want free Wi-Fi fitted inside my tombstone, just so people will visit more often."

A cupcake. Lara’s mouth watered at the mention of it. She sorely regretted skipping dinner, and she would give almost anything for something sweet and bad for her right now. She could’ve had a cupcake. Maybe she could sneak into the kitchen after this class was over and steal one, if she could manage to stay awake until then.
“I should’ve taken a nap, too,” she groaned. “I’ll have to remember for next time, otherwise I’m never gonna pass this class.”
She sighed at the very real possibility, and then levelled her eyes on the desk before her, staring down her school supplies as if they had done something to personally offend her. She had her blue spiral notebook, which she usually used to take notes during her classes - she only used parchment for hand-in assignments, since the professors seemed to prefer it that way, and it was much more convenient to keep all her information in one place than to have it scattered on a dozen different sheets. It also meant she had less to lug around the castle. She had her quill, too, but she doubted she’d use it. It had just happened to already be in her schoolbag when she’d left her dorm room.
Originally, she had intended to pick up some more Muggle school supplies when she went home over Christmas break. Her grandfather had insisted she use “proper witch supplies”, rather than Muggle ones like she wanted, and her father had compromised by allowing her to bring a few pens and pencils and a shiny new notebook to school alongside her quills, ink, and parchment, saying she could always get more if it turned out she really needed it. Now, of course, it looked like she wouldn’t be going home for Christmas at all. Maybe she wouldn’t ever go home. The whole situation was far out of her control. and more often than not, she felt like she was falling into some dark abyss that had opened up the moment that stupid hat had shouted Slytherin.
Sudden, hot tears pricked at her eyes. She was always emotional when she was tired, but it still surprised her. She blinked rapidly, hoping to push them back before anybody could notice. How embarrassing.

When Lara groaned, Dot only shrugged. "Yeah, do remember it for the next time," was all Dot said in reply, then fidgeted a little in her seat. She was wishing that the class would begin already, despite the fun she was having while conversing with the polite Slytherin girl. She wanted to know how the class was like, and if the lectures resembled the Muggle science lectures or not. Sure, the textbook could have been picked from some Muggle school (it wasn't, though, but was pretty same), but she didn't really knew. Wanted to, though.
When Dot noticed the supplies on Lara's desk, her heart skipped a beat. Her eyes focused on the shiny, blue notebook, suddenly wanting it. It would be so easy to write in notebook rather than stupid scratchy parchments lying everywhere (though Dot does know how to keep her things organized). A wide grin settled on her face.
But before Dot could confess to Lara that how much she needed a notebook these days, she noticed odd in her facial expression. She was blinking fast, and her eyes were a bit...moistened? Was she crying? What happened? Dot knew that many people didn't like sympathy and want them to mind their own business rather than trying to comfort, but she was going to ask her if she was okay anyway.
Dot was opening her mouth when Professor's voice boomed in the room again, once again silencing the chattering.
Dot made a slight face at professor's words, but she wasn't sure yet if she liked him or not. He didn't seem too evil, like some professors. But still, detention? "Harsh," Dot whispered, her voice barely there, but enough for her partner to hear correctly.

Startled, Dot followed his (rather angry) gaze to two students, both Gryffindors sitting in the last row. They looked slightly pale and frightened, and they should be, since Professor's voice sounded hard when he was annoyed. It didn't take long for Dot to understand the reason for him being annoyed. The two students were both from the same house, sitting together. She thought she might recognize one of them from Herbology classes, but she wasn't so sure."You and you, tell me your names!”
The gryffindor with bright hair scurried away from her seat, quickly exchanging places with a Ravenclaw girl who offered.”One of you two, switch place with another student and do not pick my attention in such a way again or I may think a detention would be needed...”

Lara was startled out of her own sad little thought spiral (theyhatemetheyhatemtheyhateme) by the sudden thunderous voice of the professor. She flinched, visibly, and her gaze shot over to where he stood, glaring down at a couple of frightened Gryffindor girls, who were sharing a desk despite his earlier decree.
Yikes. Lara had considered, briefly, doing the same - sitting with somebody from her own house, that is - but now she was glad she hadn’t dared do it. On the list of Things That Could Go Wrong on the First Day of Class, getting yelled at by the professor in front of the whole class was pretty close to the top. Just below decapitation and, like, puking on your desk.
“Harsh,” whispered Dot, only just loud enough for Lara to hear. She nodded in agreement, barely, eyes still fixed in front of her lest she be the next student made into an example.
“No kidding,” she breathed. “Jeez.”
He waited for the Gryffindors to settle into their new spots before moving toward the blackboard. Lara watched, both dread and anxiety tightening her chest, making it feel harder to breath than it was. He didn’t seem like the forgiving type. God only knew what he would do to her if she fell asleep during his lecture. She was, now, quite certain that this class was going to go badly for her - maybe even worse than History of Magic. She dropped one hand under the desktop to tap her fingers against the top of her thigh, not wanting to annoy anybody or get in trouble for tapping them on the desktop and making too much noise.

Dot quickly took out her pen from her robes pocket and set her parchment right for note-taking when the professor moved to the blackboard. He stood there, facing the students, so that he might be visible to all of them.
Dot listened in as the professor continued about when he could be approached and the timings of the class. He explained about the fact that the classes will be held only on Fridays. It was good to hear that. Yes, Dot might not feel sleepy at the moment, but she is most likely going to sleep in tomorrow, maybe not waking up before eleven or twelve post meridiem.
Sighing as the professor continued, Dot fidgeted with her pen, wanting the beginning stuff to be over and the real lesson to begin. She glanced at Lara, who was tapping on her thigh beneath the cover of the desk, and listening to the professor. Dot focused back on the professor, just in time to hear --
Dot nodded, though of course the professor didn't see her among so many firstie heads. She already knew the professor's name - she had known all of the professor's names before their classes, except for Potions, when she had a subsitute teacher.”Good evening class, as you must have already guessed, I am the current professor for Astronomy, Professor Barclay!”

As if suddenly excited, Dot paused moving the pen around her fingers and turned her face to Lara, a bright beam lighting up her face as she gave her a I told you so look, even though she hadn't told Lara anything except that Astronomy seemed similar to muggle science subjects.”For those of you, who were born into a muggle family or are of non-magical upbringing, might notice some amount of similarities between the subject I will teach here and the subject taught by muggles, which they either call Astronomy as well or Astrology.”

Lara, though she didn’t mean to do it, zoned out almost the moment the professor began to speak; she barely even managed to catch his name. Professor Barclay. Her siblings had mentioned him to her in passing, one of the many times they’d put up with her endless questions about Hogwarts, but she couldn’t remember much of what they’d said now, try as she might to recall their words.
She wished she could ask Remy how he’d liked this class when he’d taken it, or ask Madeleine if she’d gotten on with the professor. Lara and Madeleine looked quite alike, despite their two years’ difference, and so Lara was used to her teachers mistaking her for her sister. Used to them treating her differently, too, depending on how much of a bother her sister had been to them. Madeleine was… free-spirited, at the best of times.
Lara twisted at one of the little gold hoops in her earlobe, which made the piercing ache a little, remembering her father’s reaction to seeing that particular development. He hadn’t been upset because he was against piercings - If you’d wanted your ears pierced, Lark, I would have taken you to get them done professionally, he’d told her - but because Madeleine had been the one to do it, using ice, a sewing needle, and the cork from a bottle of wine the adults in their family had popped open the night before.
She saw then, from the corner of her eye, Dot turning to face her, the girl's dark eyes lit up with excitement, giving her a look Lara didn’t quite understand. Though she wasn’t sure what, exactly, had happened to incite this, Lara grinned back at her. Then she flipped open her notebook to a fresh page, as if she was about to take notes, just so she’d look involved if the professor ever looked toward her.

Even though Lara grinned back at her, Dot wasn't sure is she had caught on what Dot was beaming about. Her eyes were filled with sleep and tiredness, and her grin didn't even reach her eyes. Sleepy, hmm? Dot thought.
Trying not to smile, she closed her fingers around two of three treats and pulled them out, only glancing at them so that Professor Barclay won't think she was not paying attention or something. It was a circular wrapped candy, with a bright plastic cover that screamed: APPLE FLAVORED CHEWERS.
Grinning slightly, Dot nudged Lara. When she got her attention, she held out the toffees to her, a spark in her eyes as she did so. "Some very tasty toffee-chewing-gum sort of thing. Once the hard cover break, it's changes into a chewing gum. Will keep you awake if you focus on chewing, madamoiselle."
Madamoiselle was French for 'miss', a part of the vocabulary Dot had learned while reading her favorite Muggle novel series, The Lunar Chronicles. Despite how much she loved the pronounciation of the word, it was only the second time she had used it herself.
Blah, blah, blah. Dot already knew all of that, and couldn't imagine who wouldn't. It was basic knowledge. She wished for the hundredth time for Professor Barclay to move onto the lecture already. While she did keep her ears open to listen, she sent her hand down in her robes' pocket. Her fingers collided with something small and plastic-y.”This class will be looked at as natural science and will be mandatory to attend for at least five years until you reach and pass your Ordinary Wizarding Levels. After that, you may choose to take it a step further and continue up until N.E.W.T level, but that is up to you to decide, as I do not care what you want to do in your future.”

Lara couldn’t focus on whatever the professor was saying, but she couldn’t let herself fall asleep, either. She knew she’d be punished for that and it simply wasn’t something worth being punished for. One has to pick their battles, and Lara wasn’t about to pick that particular one.
Rather, to keep herself awake, she aimlessly sketched in her notebook, starting right under the header at the top of the page, which read Astronomy in messy, indigo cursive.
Normally, drawing was one of Lara’s talents. Aside from athletics, she wasn’t gifted in much else - she didn’t have the patience to learn an instrument, she didn’t have a great singing voice, and she only excelled in school subjects she was especially interested in. Anybody who knew Lara could plainly see how odd it was that she could spend so much time focussed on the perfection of a single drawing. She struggled to read more than a few pages of a novel at a time without getting bored.
But now, she wasn’t drawing particularly well. She held the pencil loosely in her right hand, sketching in broad, light strokes, lines overlapping where they shouldn’t have, the perception skewered. It was only vaguely recognizable as the classroom around them.
She felt Dot nudge her side, forcing her to zone back in to the situation. The girl was grinning, only barely, and offering her some sort of.. sweets? Lara could make out the word chewer on the wrapper. She plucked one of the candies out of Dot’s palm, then twisted carefully at the plastic wrapper under her desk, careful not to let it make noise.
Madamoiselle? Lara herself was half-French, and had learnt the language alongside English as a toddler. Did Dot speak it, too? Aside from her own siblings, Lara didn’t know anybody else who was fluent, and she often missed speaking French. Her father had stoped speaking it it after-
Lara tilted her head at Dot, only slightly, silently questioning as she popped the sweet past her lips. Flavour burst across her tongue, making her mouth water. Apple was her favorite kind. She mouthed thank you at Dot, a slight smile gracing her lips.
