A Breath of Fresh Air
August 12th, 2018
Amanda pulled her hood up as she walked out the front door and shut it quietly behind her. It was a brisk night, the stars twinkling in the sky. She had a small backpack with her, in which she had stuffed her sketch pad and pencils. Amanda plugged her earbuds into her phone and turned on her music. Placing her phone in the back pocket of her jeans, Amanda picked up her skateboard and rode off.
Amanda had needed this little break. Her family was moving into a house in a town near London and they were currently renting a small flat in the city itself until the house was ready. Six people in a small, two-bedroom flat was way too much for Amanda. She had offered to sleep on the couch instead of cramming in a bedroom with her three siblings. Thankfully, her parents agreed to that arrangement so Amanda had the living room to herself. Just this night, her older half-sister Leslie was getting frustrated with their father because he wouldn’t let Leslie go visit her mother, Teresa, in prison. Amanda shook her head. Why anyone would want to visit that rude woman was beyond her. But Leslie said that she felt a special connection to her mother, even though she had ignored Leslie before their father’s divorce with Teresa. Amanda had met the woman once and despised her. Teresa had had quite the criminal record, nothing major, just lots of DUI’s and and shoplifting incidents, but they had finally caught up with her and now she was serving jail time. Serves her right, Amanda thought as she gave a vicious push with her foot.
Amanda decided that she had thought about her father’s nasty ex-wife long enough and cleared all thoughts of her from her mind. Amanda finally made it to the park and picked up her skateboard as she walked to the grassy area. She set down her board and backpack and lied down in the grass, which was damp from the night air. Amanda couldn’t care less, though, if her clothes got all wet. She closed her eyes, listening to her music and trying to think happy thoughts.

A Breath of Fresh Air
[font=PT Sans] Amaya breathed in sharply. This night was hers, and hers alone.
Everything here was perfect yet nothing in her life was.
It just reminded her that the Universe did not operate around her, and rather, she was just a lucky soul to be living in it.
“‘The world is not a wish-granting factory.’”
A smile wormed it’s way onto Amaya’s face, a genuine smile and not one forced to keep up appearances or to fake someone she wasn’t, a smile not born out of a need to hide away.
She loved the quote because of how true it was, and how ultimately true the book it came from also was. It had become one of her favorites, and the smile became a little bigger.
Finally noticing the dark-haired girl who had walked around and started using her skateboard, Amaya watched her for a long moment, staying still in her spot, hidden by the shadows yet dimly illuminated by the lights that were somewhat far.
After another while of watching the girl skateboarding around, listening to her music, Amaya finally approached her.
“Hi... I’m Amaya, Amaya Bourne.”
Amaya tentatively extended a hand out to the other girl, watching her carefully with a unseeable expression of hope.

A Breath of Fresh Air
Amanda paused her music, pulled out her earbuds, and glanced at the girl who had approached her. The other girl had long black hair and bright blue eyes. Amanda shook the hand that had been offered and replied “Hi Amaya. I’m Amanda. Amanda Sparrow, that is. Want to join me? I’m not really doing much, just getting some fresh air. Sorry that the grass is wet. I don’t have a towel or anything, unfortunately.” Amanda patted the ground next to her. She was glad to have company. A friendly face to converse with was always a welcome sight.
“So where do you go to school? I go to this boarding school of sorts in Scotland. It’s like a ‘you have to get a letter to get in’ kind of thing. There’s a train that takes you there and all of that jazz.” Amanda was careful to not give away too much information about Hogwarts, in case Amaya was a Muggle. That would be bad. I could probably get expelled or something. Amanda didn't know what to say to find out if Amaya was also a witch. She decided after some thought to just hope that if Amaya was a witch, she would understand that Amanda was referring to Hogwarts.

A Breath of Fresh Air
[font=PT Sans] Amaya paused for a moment, pondering the safety of conversing with a near-stranger(STRANGER DANGER!), before she nodded, and took a seat next to Amanda. “That’s okay, don’t worry.”
“I...Go somewhere similar to that. Is it possible... Do you... Do you know what Hogwarts is?”
Amaya paused. It was very possible that she’d just told a muggle what Hogwarts was, but she assumed it wasn’t that bad, as there was a incident in History where a wizard, Severus Snape, had told both the witch and the witch’s sister what it was.
It was also one of the most famous parts of wizarding history, so she assumed that if Amanda were a muggle, she should be fine. For the most part. And she could also find a way to lie.
Relaxing muscles she didn’t realize were tensed, Amaya flashed a quick smile at Amanda before settling into a quiet silence.
It was a comfortable silence, not one brought by awkwardness, and Amaya settled for looking at the stars for a moment, before glancing back at Amanda. After a moment of piecing words together into a sentence, Amaya opened her mouth to speak, before closing it again.
Yup, she’d definitely just made it awkward.
Amaya sighed. She seemed to be the master of doing that, and decided that she would just let Amanda lead the talking.

A Breath of Fresh Air
When Amaya mentioned Hogwarts, Amanda broke into a wide grin. “Yeah, that’s where I go to school. I’m sure you gathered that already, though. I was hoping that if you’re a witch like me you would pick up on it. I’m going to be a Second Year. How about you?” Amanda felt rather lucky to have just happened to meet a fellow witch. I mean, what are the chances?
“So, do you live around here? I’m staying a couple blocks away: we bought a nice house in Kent a couple months ago, but it’s not quite ready to move into yet. You know, because of the previous owners moving out, renovations and the like.” Amanda laid back down on the grass and stared up at the sky, admiring the stars. She couldn’t wait to attend Astronomy class again next school year. That class is so much fun. “I just love being outside at night. The cool damp air, all of the stars. And plus, there’s hardly anybody out, so places aren’t overcrowded.” Amanda decided to stop talking and let her new friend Amaya get a few words in. After all, Amanda couldn’t always be the center of attention, as her mother often reminded her.
