GOOEY BROWNIES

1 cup sugar 2 eggs 1/2 cup pastry flour 2 squares chocolate 1/3 cup butter 1 tsp vanilla 1 cup walnuts | | | | | | | | | | | | Preheat oven to 350 degrees Add sugar in beaten eggs Sift in flour Add squares of chocolate, melted with the butter. Mix well Add vanilla and walnuts Spread batter 3/4 inch thick in a square pan Cook in oven for 25-30 minutes or until toothpick inserted comes out clean. Allow tine to cool Cut into squares or strips Enjoy!

You know that one slytherin girl? The first year? The one who’s always breaking rules? Yes I know, all the slytherins do, but the girl who breaks a bunch of rules? Yes, Ava Winchect. I heard she burned her homework and turned it in to the professor like that. Dunno if she got a detention, but she sure deserves one. And she walks as if she owns the school. Doesn’t she know what it means to be a muggle-born? I don’t think so. Fits right in with the slytherins, that’s for sure. Her temper is pretty bad, she’s always going off on people. I don’t know why, but she always seems angry. Wish her luck staying out of Azkaban, that one.

Why did I like the Transfiguration class? It was the hardest by far, yet it came easily to me. Thankfully. So when I remembered a joke from my muggle school I just had to tell it to the teacher. “Why can’t you trust atoms?” Transfiguration was essentially the study of changing atoms, so this was perfect. I waited a breath before revealing the answer. “Because they make everything up!”

Ava was very conflicted. She knew that she was known by many, and hated by most, and she wasn’t sure how she felt about that. She wished that someone else understood her pain, but the closest she had to that was Thorn, and she didn’t count. She would prefer to pretend Thorn didn’t exist. And Thorn seemed to agree. Ava hadn’t made her do anything, yet why did she feel so guilty that Thorn was stuck with her in St. Mungo’s? All Ava did was ask, she didn’t force Thorn, and Thorn had agreed. Heck, she had even told the entire world what she had done, and that was no Ava who made her do that. So maybe staff would find out eventually, but Thorn still could’ve put off the inevitable. The problem was, Ava felt guilty for what she did, and she didn’t even know why she had done it. The best she could say was that she was sleep deprived when she made the choices she did, which was true, but was she really that tired that she had made such a reckless choice. Thinking back, Ava realized she was a very reckless person. No wonder so many people hated her like they did. She had given them reason to, she might as well have handed it to them on a silver platter. She wished she could go back in time and warn her past self not to do the stupid actions she had done. She didn’t see a way she could make it better, they were past apologies. She needed something drastic to show her regret for her decisions. She needed to show Lucian she really did care about him and was sorry for what she had done to him. The old part of herself was still saying “well, if he hadn’t threatened you then all this wouldn’t have happened.” but she tried to ignore that. She was better than that now, she was strong, brave, courageous and resilient, she wouldn’t let her old self get the better of her. She had two choices, she could try and change, rewrite herself as the protagonist, or even just another person, in the story of Hogwarts, or she could let herself be the antagonist of it all. Maybe she would even end up being the scapegoat. She didn’t know what to do. So all she did was lay down on the bed in her room and close her eyes, trying to escape herself.

Ava was near the rehearsal room one Saturday. From behind the closed doors, she could hear music leaking. She closed her eyes for a moment. It sounded beautiful, light as a doves wings and soft as cotton. The sounds were perfect. The melody could be heard well even through the closed door. Everything about just made you want to close your eyes, and that’s what she did. The music soothed any nerves she might have had, and left her feeling calm.

Ava had always liked music. Music was her rock, her solid landing. The sounds always grounded her and left her feeling clarified and focused. When she was 9 she learned to play clarinet. She joined a local orchestra and played with them until her acceptance into hogwarts.

As Ava hurried down the stairs towards her common room, she made a decision. She would ask around until she found someone to give her a piano lesson. Until then, she would have to practice on her own. She decided to go to the rehearsal room tomorrow to try the piano.

Ava hurried up the stairs and paused at the doors to the rehearsal room. She listened for a moment, waiting to hear voices or instruments playing, but nothing came. She flung the doors open and made her way towards the piano. It was a grand piano, sleek and black. The keys were polished so they shines, and the room smelled of roses and paper.

Ava made her way to the piano. She gently touched the keys. With little pressure, she could push them down and make a sound. She sat at the bench and put her fingers where she thought they should go. She was musical, and teachers often used a piano as a guideline to notes. She hit a key. A B maybe? Or a C? She hit it again. Definitely a C. With the base note down, she closed her eyes and picked out a slow melody. Rosamunde. It was a song she had practiced hard on with the clarinet, and had it memorized down to the note. With clarity she played until she had reached the last note. She opened her eyes and stood up abruptly. This would have to wait for another day. For now, she has something she needed to take care of, something she had only remembered while playing.

Aquamorph: A spell that allows you to morph when in water. Go into any form of water (fresh water lasts longer) and completely submerge. When underwater say the incantation (aquamorph) and make the shape of a star with your wand. Upon completing these steps, envision what you would like to morph into and stay underwater for another 3 seconds. You must come up on the third second and get out of the water of the spell will not work.

Ava was going on an adventure. A Pygmy puff adventure.

Earlier in that day she had heard a girl in panic because she couldn’t find her Pygmy puff, and Ava had offered to help.

She now found herself outside crawling through bushes and climbing up trees. Who knew what a Pygmy puff was capable of?

She searched under a scraggly bush. Nothing but a few mice (yuck) and bird poop (yuckier).

She searched up a tree. Nothing but an angry squirrel who climbed onto her face (ouch) and a mother bird who attacked her when she got to close to it’s nest (ouch-ier).

She gave up. She went inside and went to find the girl who had lost the Pygmy puff only to see it sitting on the Slytherin hourglass. “C’mere!” She shouted, leaping towards it. The Pygmy puff leapt onto her sprawled out body and nestled into her hood.

She was victorious. She proudly carried the Pygmy puff back to the girl, knowing she had saved the day.

Quidditch. The famed sport if the wizard ig world. Despite only having been here for a few weeks, I had heard loads about the sport from older students and in flying class. Instantly, my interest had been piqued. It was like Hockey (field hockey/lacrosse) in the air, yet not. I wanted to be in one of these matches, and when I learned an older girl was hosting a quidditch match, I had signed on immediately. Only problem was I had no idea how to play. That’s why I found myself under a sweater and holding a broom on a completely empty training pitch. I had chosen not to bring any books after I had heard an older student say “Books won’t help you fly, only experience.”. A school broom was all I had for this match. Other students had all sorts of brooms, from Cleansweep 7’s to Nimbus 2000’s. The school brooms were anything that the fancy brooms weren’t i had heard the rule, no first years can own brooms. I wasn't sure how strict the rule was, for I had seen many first years with brooms of their own. Alas, I would have to make due with what I had.

I mounted the broom and kicked off the ground, enjoying the rush of wind in my face. I practiced the basic maneuvers. Lean left, swerve left. Lean right, swerve right. I wished someone else was on the field and I balls throw me could they so I could practice catching. I leaned forward on the broom, hoping to jerk the idea from my brain. I couldn’t shake the feeling I was missing something in my practice. That’s when it struck me. I was a chaser. I needed to learn how to catch and throw. Only one slight problem...
"Where am I going to find a…a…” she racked her brain for the proper term for the ball. "A Quaffle. Where am I going to find one of those?" I took a speedy lap around the feild, searching for the ball, but nothing. Instead, I found some good sized rocks scattered about. An idea popped into my head. Couldn't I use these to practice? I landed near some of the rocks and picked one up. It was about the size of a volleyball, and as light as one, too. I tossed the air, once, twice, trying it to get a feel for it. This would have to work for now. I kicked off the ground and set off racing across the feild. I launched the rock up into the air and chased after it, trying to see whether I could or not. I plummeted, and with me the rock. I reached for it, and tried to catch it, just a few more inches…

The same moment i caught the rock i face planted onto the hard ground. “Training to be a seeker, ‘eh?” My face turned bright red. I wasn’t sure if it was because of how hard I hit my face or because my training had been practically useless. Although I wouldn’t mind being a seeker…so maybe it wasn’t all in vein.

Love can be many things

Brownies come from Ava’s father’s side of the family. As a young boy, her father would go to his grandparents house and enjoy his grandmothers almond brownies.

The recipe was passed down to him, and his wife. The recipe would be passed down to his kids, and their kids, and so on and so forth.

The brownie was a gooey chocolate taste, with soft almonds in between the chocolate goodness. The brownies were perfectly gooey, with a balance of chocolate and almond. The edges of brownie are crispy, and are always going fought over by the family eating the brownie. Unless, of course, you prefer the center where everything sticks to the roof of your mouth in a mixture of chocolate and almonds, making you want to close your eyes in delight.
