Erin scribbled on the parchment, excited to learn all about her new pen pal. Erin, being the social butterfly she is, practically leaped at the opportunity to meet new students throughout the school, and she had finally been paired with another student. She knew little about the girl, only that her name was Meris Barovar and that she was a fellow first-year in Gryffindor house. Trying to remember all the details she could from the program, Erin continued scribbling down her first letter.

Dear Meris,

I'm so excited to be your pen pal! My name is Erin Gallagher—one of the first years that was sorted into Ravenclaw house. I'm not sure what all to talk about so I guess I'll just send a few basic questions: what is your favorite color? (Mine is canary yellow!) What is your favorite food? (Mine would have to be shepherd’s pie like my Momma makes).

I look forward to hearing from you!

Meris was overjoyed to find her first quill pal letter. She took it with her and read it later that evening, while curled up on her bed. Meris saw the name signed on the parchment and smiled. Erin is a nice name, very pretty and elegant. She took a moment to pull the blanket around her then scanned back to the beginning of the letter and read it all slowly, twice, before digging into her trunk to find her quill, an ink pot, paper and ink blotter paper.

She placed all the tools before her on the bed. In retrospect, she realized that it was not the best place to do writing work with ink. By the time she was done there were drips of ink all over her bedding and a mess of blotting paper. She'd started over a dozen times as was evidenced by the pile of blotchy ink-smeared paper dotting her bed and the surrounding floor. She ended up with a legible though smudgy letter.
Dear Erin,

I am a first year in Gryffindor. It’s been an interesting year already and I never in my wildest dreams ever though I’d have a talking hat on my head.

Let’s see, my favorite color depends on the season of the year so I’ll tell them all to you. In summer my favorite color is blue, the shade of blue that towers over the woods near my home in Wales. In autumn my favorite color is a ruddy red, the color of my cheeks when out playing in the brisk cool air. In winter it is the grey that sleeping trees take on to let the world know they will no longer bloom. And finally, in spring my favorite color is green, the color of the new shoots of foliage peaking up from out of the wet ground.

My favorite food would be my Mam’s homemade bread. She bakes it every Sunday! Enough for the whole week. I miss it very much. It was simply divine with gobs of fresh butter that also got made every week from the cream we got from our milking cows.

I guess now its my turn to ask questions. Where are you from? Do you miss your family? What are they like? I really miss my family. This is my first time ever being away from my Mam and Tad. What’s your favorite class so far? Have you tried those weird every flavor beans? They actually mean every single flavor… I found this out the hard way. I swear that bean should have been chocolate flavor! Did you know that the frogs that come with the trading cards actually hop?! That is so amazing. Magic is amazing. I hope your having a smashing time.

Erin grinned as she read the letter she had received from Meris after checking the Owlery. It was smudged, but not so much that Erin couldn't read the letter. After reading it, Erin sat it down on her desk and grabbed her own parchment before excitedly scribbling on it in response.

Dear Meris,

I love how you described your favorite colors; they all sound so beautiful! Your mam's bread sounds delicious as well!

To answer your questions: I currently live in Ireland with my family, but I grew up in the States. I do miss my family very much too; my grandma has a garden that I help her with during the spring and fall seasons, and I miss helping her gather all the stuff she's grown. My parents are ok, albeit a bit strange according to other witches and wizards. They study muggle society and culture for a living—hence why I was living in the States.

My favorite class has to be Herbology; I love learning about all the plants in there! And yes, I also learned about the beans the hard way—who knew a bean I was sure to be coconut could taste so bad! With the chocolate frogs, I haven't even started my collection with the cards, but I've heard they jump and I'm looking forward to starting my collection with them soon! Magic is indeed amazing; I didn't get to see it in full force like this living in the States, so it's wonderful to be able to be with other students who find it just as fascinating.
