Laurence wears a pair of black Hermès loafers with tall dark green kilt hose socks, over a kilt bearing the ancestral tartan of his noble house, clan Buchanan of Leny. The tartan he wears now is a muted version of his family's rich colours, choosing to only wear the ‘official’ Buchanan tartan on special occasions. Bound alongside his kilt by rope hangs a sporran, which serves as his kilt's 'pockets'. Over that, he wears a white shirt with cufflinks featuring his family's crest as well as a Gryffindor tie featuring a splendid double Windsor knot, topped with a Gryffindor sweater vest and his house robes.

Up the stairs, down the endless corridors. He'd just returned from Defence against the Dark Arts, and in a little over an hour, he'd have to be at Charms. It left the young Buchanan with just enough time to settle down in the study hall to work on his herbology assignments. Truth was, all this schoolwork kept him restless. The first few weeks had been kind to Laurence, but he could feel the workload increasing, the weight upon his shoulders tiring him mentally and physically, until a point where he could no doubt collapse.

The letters from his parents had been uneventful and dull, as the boy expected they would be. The Buchanans hardly ever told their only son of their work, and the truth was that manorial life in the hills of county Antrim didn't live up to the colourfulness of a city dweller's days. Still, the family had a residence in Belfast Town, which they chose not to use that often; Scotch Old Money in Ireland had little need to try and blend with Fenian radicals in Irish cities, they would much rather visit old Edinburgh or Inverness.

As he marched on, he could feel the weight of his satchel pulling at his arm. A wave of exhaustion enveloped the poor boy; had his morning run been too much of an expense on his health? Had his parents' pressure for him to do well in school gotten to him? Was it the fact that he'd been getting used to a new life, a new school that made him feel under the weather, or did he just have trouble sleeping? Whatever it must have been, he could scant recognise it, as energetic and full of life as he had previously been.

With a spin of his left hand, the lad rubbed some sleep out of his and yawned, closing his eyes for a split second before -

BANG!

The alien feel of something bumping into him made the young Ulsterman snap back to life at once, and before he could do just about anything but open his eyes once more, he felt himself losing his balance, tumbling to the cold, stony floor. Luckily for him, a rich, deep-coloured tapestry softened the blow to his elbow and legs. Instantaneously, he rose to his feet and wiped off some of the dust that had gotten onto his clothes. He was a tad bit shocked that he could be so careless and whimsical as to bump into strangers and felt some shame come up, causing his face to grow red and blush.

He met the eyes of the girl he'd just bounced up against, a young Ravenclaw girl with sleek black hair and vivid yellow eyes. She seemed to be about his age, which, honestly, made the boy's embarrassing hiccough so much worse.

"I'm so very sorry." he began, in his smooth Ulster accent. "Are you alright?"

She started going to Pandora Transfiguration class. It was a very tiring day. It could also be due to the sunny weather. I wish I had Flying class today so I didn't have to take it, she thought. Puffing, she headed for the stairs to the third floor. I hope the stairs don't move, she thought.

Luckily the stairs hadn't moved. There was still time before the lesson started. But she wanted to be one of the first to enter the class. Some students could hear her talking behind her back. But she didn't care. No matter what they say.

-BANG-

She found herself on the ground. She didn't know what hit him. She could hear some girls laughing behind her back. When she opened her eyes, she came face to face with a child. He was a blue-eyed man with long, messy blond hair up to his shoulders. Judging by his robes, his house was Gryffindor.

"I-it doesn't matter. Things that can happen after all."

Was he stuttering? Normally it wouldn't be like that. She fell while trying to get up. It was a very strange situation. She could still hear the girls whispering. She took a deep breath

As horrible as it was for him to admit, something irked him about the fact that the girl before him struggled so much to get up. Was he a bad person for feeling annoyance at another person's clumsiness? Was it too much to ask that they should be miserable some place else? Webs of misanthropic thoughts crowded his mind, resulting in Laurence being dissatisfied with his own nihilism.

The giggles of some of the girls awoke him from his troubles, and he shot them a short, concerned look. He hated being embarrassed in public. His gaze wandered back to the girl at his feet. Instinctively, Laurence reached out his hand to her, bidding her to take it so that he might pull her up from that very dusty carpet that had so graciously broken their fall, but had, as Buchanan so snobbishly mused, filled the lungs of every pupil in a hundred-mile radius with centuries worth of grime now that all the dust in that ancient carpet had been scattered about.

"Do they ever clean these? That dust's a bloody health hazard."

As he waited for her to take his hand, he looked down at her, trying to decipher whether he'd seen those vivid yellow eyes previously. Had he? Had he not? Surely he'd remember if he'd seem them, right? Why did they somehow seem relatively familiar, if he could hardly remember where he'd ever seen them?

The snickering from others continued, and Laurence suddenly felt a tremendous pressure not to stand besides the girl lying on a corridor carpet. His ego couldn't take being publicly ridiculed like this, and as he looked around, miniscule, near-indiscoverable beads of sweat started forming beneath his golden locks. He was starting to crack under the pressure and sneering of those around himself and the girl at his feet.

"I don't believe we've met." the boy from Ulster spoke with a voice that cracked in 'believe''s second syllable. He liked to have eyes on him, he liked to be seen, but not like this. The pressure felt insurmountable, and though it certainly dramatic as he imagined it to be, Buchanan was still extremely uncomfortable. "Laurence Buchanan." The mention of his own voice brought him some confidence and reassurance. It was nice to hear your own name. In truth, it's what hoped would get this girl off the ground as well; 't was ever easier to grab the hand of an acquaintance than a stranger's, the young Gryffindor thought to himself. "What's your name?"

Pandora was looking at a child at one hand. Then without thinking, he took her hand and stood up. She was going to get the boy out of somewhere, but she couldn't remember. When the Gryffindor man introduced himself, she introduced herself.

"Nice to meet you. Pandora Smith in my name. But my friends call me Dora or Panda."

She looked into Laurence's eyes once more. It felt like they had met before. She cleaned the dust off. He was right. It was very dusty.

"I guess they don't really clean. A lot of dust came out."

I wonder if the clock escaped. Nedem thought there was no clock in the corridors. She wrote it aside to suggest it. She couldn't help wondering if mages wore clocks. Then a question came to her mind.

"What's your next lesson?"

She had asked curiously. She never regretted. She doesn't know what else to talk about. That's why it posed such a question.

"What house would you be in if you weren't in Gryffindor? Gryffindors are brave. Do you think you are brave? I'm Ravenclaw for example but I don't think I'm that smart."

She also talked too much. She breathed a little.

"Pandora?" Laurence scoffed. "As in, the Pandora - from Greek mythology?"

Laurence questioned the apparent need to name one's daughter after the woman who, according to Hesiod, supposedly brought all evils of the world upon man. Yet, for how misogynistic and bigoted the old Greek's myths Works and Days and Theogony were and still are, the young Gryffindor saw some admirability in reclaiming the name. After all, the original Pandora's name was originally given to her by Hermes, and means no less than 'all-gift', a testament to the collective efforts of the gods of old Olympus to make Pandora as appealing to the mortals as possible.

When she spoke up again, Laurence did his best to push those thoughts to the back of his mind, however, trying to listen attentively as she asked him about his upcoming classes.

"I've got charms at a quarter to two. What about yourself?"

With some risk of seeming rude and unattentive, Buchanan looked about the corridors, trying to find a clock anywhere. Much like the girl in front of him, he ultimately failed and felt frustrated with his inability to orient himself chronologically. Traditions and customs described that mages only received pocket watches when they came of age, which nowadays meant around their seventeenth birthday. The young Ulsterman could not help but wonder why many wizards, most of whom he considered sharp-witted and pragmatic, would cling to such an outdated convention. Still, he knew better than to question it; it took mountains to abolish tradition, and he certainly wasn't going to put in so much work for a bloody pocket watch.

Catching himself slipping away in his own thoughts once more, he regained his mental focus when he saw Pandora speak up once more. Then, suddenly, she asked him about what house he would have been in, had the sorting hat not seemingly arbitrarily thrown him into Gryffindor.

Buchanan knew the answer, but he wasn't sure whether he should discuss it with this stranger. As familiar as she seemed to Laurence, the two had just met, and he found her question to be relatively personal and intrusive.

Besides, Gryffindor had been all but his first choice. Still, he'd found camaraderie and fraternité amongst its ranks, and was too proud to speak the truth and say that he'd rather have been put in Ravenclaw or Slytherin like his ancestors. With as much subtlety as he could humanly muster, he hoped to evade the question, slyly changing the subject to the hindmost sentence she'd uttered.

"What makes you say that? It's a great shame for any given person to doubt their own intellect."

Unbeknownst to him, Laurence had quite a stuffy vocabulary, which was relatively strange for a boy his age. It had been so due to the fact that he'd been raised in upper-class circles, by well-spoken tutors and nannies. Furthermore, his natural talent and interest in all things rhetorical, literary and linguistic gave him a knack for picking out delicate words, which, coupled with his posh Ulster accent, spoken by an eleven-year-old's voice so high one would think he were a tenor, made for an audibly funny experience.

"Yes, like Pandora in Greek Mythology. I don't know who put my name but I love my name."

She talked too much about this subject. But she was just curious. Who named it. She broke away from these thoughts immediately.

"I have a Transfiguration class. I was going up to the fifth floor. I was actually trying to get into the first class."

Pandora started to play with her necklace around her neck. It was a little too distracting. She was annoyed at Lauren's speech. She came closer and spoke, showing her teeth too much. But she spoke in a calm voice.

"Who said I doubted my intelligence? I know my limit and what I am good at and what I am bad at it makes me strong not weak. I'm not smart compared to Ravenclaws. I'm not that good at classes and I can't do History of Magic and Astronomy, but I'm good at doing magic. I only know my kenid weaknesses"

When she was done speaking, she walked away from Laurence. It was as if she wasn't herself when she said this.

"Do you know your own limit? For example, which class are you bad at? For example."

She smiled
