It was a chilly November day, and all I could think about was all the letters students had been receiving during breakfast. Since I had last seen my parents I had received—oh how many had it been? Should I count in my head? No. I had received no letters, no nothing. I was sure they hadn’t even thought of me since I had left, I thought indignantly. Why had I thought they would send me a letter? I don’t know. It was stupid, a mistake I would’ve made when I was younger maybe, but not anymore. I was older and wiser, yet I still found my legs carrying me to the owners to check if there was a letter I had missed. I climbed the stairs until I reached the unsanitary room. It had owls of all looks, colors and sizes. The floor was covered in bones from eaten mice, as well as owl poop and dirty straw. It was absolutely disgusting, and to add to that the room had a chill because none of the windows had glass installed in them. Absolutely horrid, if you asked her. But she still went in and searched for a letter that might still be attached to an owl. Nothing. She had sent letters to her parents since the start of the school ear, so the problem wasn’t that they didn’t have access to anything to get their letters to her. No, the problem was that they couldn’t care enough to take the time to write to her. She was about to kick one of the perches they owls were sitting on when she noticed a boy sitting in the doorway. “What do you want?”

Taizu had been having a good day so far. he'd firstly gotten a letter from his parents about how his father had gotten a promotion at work, and Taizu was elated. He had quickly started composing a letter in his mind and gotten to writing the letter shortly after he had returned to the commons room.

Then, Taizu had skipped his way up to the owlery, excited to deliver the letter. It was shaping up to be an exciting day, and Taizu couldn't wait for what was bound to happen in the rest of the day. Reaching the owlery, Taizu stopped dead in the doorway, the smell of owl pellets and rotting mice assaulting his nostrils. However, that wasn't what caused him to stop. No, what caused him to stop was the very clearly angry girl in the room.

So Taizu stood there as stared uneasily, not knowing what to do. Did he go in there and send his letter and leave? Or did he ask what was wrong? Before he could decide, the girl saw him, and very angrily asked him what he wanted. Feeling very panicked now, Taizu lifted his hands up in fear and said, "I-I j-just wanted t-to s-s-send a l-lett-ter."

Hurrying past the girl to an owl, Taizu quickly tied the letter to the owls leg before turning back to the girl. With a sigh, Taizu said, "I-i-is e-everything all r-right? Y-you seem k-kinda ups-set."

The kid seemed absolutely terrified of me. I frowned and examined him. Kind of gangly, with long limbs hanging by his sides. Shorter than a dwarf, I added with a smirk. He was pretty slender, the kind of build that would make you overlook him in a crowd. I felt a pang of sympathy for this short dude who seemed to be stuttering out some sort of reply to my question. He held up an envelope and managed to answer with a quick: "I-I j-just wanted t-to s-s-send a l-lett-ter." I examined it. Seemed pretty standard as far as letters went. “To who?” I demanded, gesturing at the letter for his benefit.

He rushed to get the letter tied to an owl and turned back to me. Everything about him seemed careful. He was easy to miss in a crowd—heck—even in a small room. He seemed quite afraid of everything, which contradicted his griffindork badge. Small, afraid, not confident. Exactly the sorts I tried to avoid, in case it rubbed off on me. I didn’t recognize him from this years sorting ceremony, but maybe that was because of how he acted. Even maybe in part to how he looked.

"I-i-is e-everything all r-right? Y-you seem k-kinda ups-set." I considered the question. Should I answer truthfully? He seemed harmless enough, so I sighed and felt myself lean against the nasty owlery walls. “I was looking to see if my parents had wrote to me yet.” Just saying the words made me feel small, weak. But maybe that was because when I was leaning against the wall I had shrunk a few inches. Stupid talent.

Taizu didn't know what to do here. He felt like he was being attacked the entire time, like he had done something wrong. And it was scaring him more than anything else. He had no friends to reassure him here, Taizu just kept scrunching up more and more, looking smaller and smaller with each word.

He really didn't know what to make of this girl either. She was young, looking to be in their first year, but he couldn't for the life of him remember her in the slightest. Probably because he had spent the entire ceremony with his head between his legs, trying to not freak out over how many people there had been. It had been terrifying for him.

But the girl here... She struck him as memorable. He felt that she was the type of person to be noticed whether or not they wanted to be. It was as simple as that. She was an easily seen person, and Taizu was a wallflower. An interesting meetup, to say the least.

She had responded to his question, and Taizu could see how she seemed to deflate. If anything, it made Taizu even uneasier, as when people got like that, they either lashed out at those who helped them or became unresponsive. Both options sounded horrible to Taizu, and so for an awkward moment, Taizu was silent. Then Taizu said, "D-d-d-do y-y-y-you n-need-d a h-hug-g-g?"

I felt small, leaning against the wall, vulnerable to anything this boy could--and would--throw at me. At least I wasn't the smallest in the room. As I spoke, the boy seemed to scrunch up into himself. Through his fear, the boy seemed to be scanning me, figuring out what I was about. I wasn't sure if he recognized me, but I saw a flash of something in his eyes. Realizations, or maybe hate. I steeled my eyes against him, fighting the urge to kick something--or someone. My response to his question had him unsure and uneasy. His posture said he had been in a situation like this, maybe many times. He was silent for a moment, weighing his options. I stared at him with focused determination, deciding whether I would be fighting or fleeing. I was leaning towards fighting, whether it be with words or fists. Or feet, for that matter. I wasn't sure if he was the type for gossip, but I certainly wouldn't be on the gossip radar as the girl who fled from the small, undaunting kid. He opened his mouth to speak, and I braced myself. But the words that came out of his mouth were the last thing I thought I would hear. He had asked if I needed a hug. I was shocked. No one, never, had ever asked me that. I felt my eyes well with tears and looked away, swiping at my face with a sleeve quickly to hide my crying. I wanted to say yes, to nod, let him hug me and let him be near, to push away my problems momentarily. Would I be seen as weak? I nodded a tiny, barely noticeable, nod before I could convince myself to do otherwise.

For a second, Taizu thought that he had messed up. Asking a girl if they wanted a hug? Seriously? It was no wonder that she had tears welling up in her eyes. Seeing this, Taizu began to panic and immediately backpedaled. "I-I mean, y-you don't h-have t-t-to get a h-hug i-if you d-don't want t-to! I-i don't w-want t-to b-bother you t-too m-much! S-s-s-s-,"

Taizu had been trying desperately to apologize to the girl for suggesting such a awkward thing when she had nodded. Taizu shut his mouth a a faint snap, and very nervously stepped forward. It was clear that his nervousness was more about the fact that she might think he's an idiot, but when she did nothing, Taizu very cautiously wrapped his arms around her and hugged her.

It wasn't anything too special to Taizu, but he had read somewhere that hugs would help calm people down. And it was working for Taizu. His breathing quickly became steady, and he was trembling less. The hug went on for a moment, and Taizu was no longer panicked. Ending the hug, Taizu looked at the girl, smiled, and said, "F-feeling better?" He was much calmer now, and looked at the girl carefully, trying to see if they'd be better.

He seemed to take my silence as a way that I was trying to politely say no: although if I were to say no I would definitely do it brutally. He stuttered quickly, saying that I didn’t have to say yes. I think it was the tears in my eyes that had him panicking the most.

He seemed to be looking for something to say, most likely an apology, when I finally found the courage to give a tiny nod. Cautiously, as if I were as fragile as a porcelain doll, he wrapped his arms around me. He seemed nervous, so I made no move to scare him off. As little as I wanted to admit it, I was carrying a lot on my shoulders and I was too stubborn to unload it on someone else.

He seemed to be steadier, and I could feel myself calming down, however slowly. Maybe I needed to tell people what I was carrying. But that would ruin my “flying solo” rule. If you depend on someone, they depend on you. Them depending on you means—"F-feeling better?" He stepped back from our hug and barely stuttered, unlike earlier when you could barely make out the words he said. He stood a little taller, and she was beginning to wonder if he was a second year—or even a third year. “Yeah,” she considered her answer carefully. “Yeah, I’m better thanks.” She still had something on her mind but she wasn’t sure how he would react to it. “I’m Ava.”
