BROOM RACING - HUFFLEPUFF vs GRYFFINDOR - WINTER 2023
Today was going to be an interesting day for a broom race. While it might not have been the most wholesome of methods, one would have to admit that the way Hufflepuff won the last match was quite impressive. Would they pull off another win against Gryffindor this time?
Simon took to his starting place, grateful that he had decided to wear sunglasses. The sun was strong and the way it was reflecting off of the snowfall only made it worse for the dhampir. It was all good though, as soon his focus would be zeroed in on the broom race. He was ready. "Let's do this, badgers!"

And with Starlee's shout of 'go,' the racers were off. It appeared that both teams were aiming for speed, as almost all the Hufflepuff and Gryffindor racers shot past the starting line. Keyword being almost, as it seemed one Hufflepuff racer, Jack Warren missed the start, hanging back behind the rest of the group. Maybe it was a new strategy?A note to all players: The word count minimum is 50 words. The next deadline to post is 120 hours from the time this is posted. The racers were all going at top speed, and the first unit they had to contend with was a thorn patch. Starlee knew just how painful those could be, even if they looked unassuming. Most racers made it through unscathed, but a few found their accuracy slightly off, and Nicholas, Marina and George came out of the patch bleeding.UNIT 2: Easy Thorns [Accuracy DC 12]

As the racers now made their way into a rather narrow passage, it was clear more precision would be needed here that in the last unit. It was clear as well that with the speeds most racers were going, the racers accuracy would be... well... less than accurate. Serena seemed to be the only one who could race that quickly and avoid damage, and while Xailah appeared to be on course, her broom started to shake uncontrollably, sending her into the wall as well. While Serena clearly had the accuracy to make it through spaces unscathed, she lacked in strength, and as the second the racers shot out of the passage and through the waterfall, she lost grip of her broom, and fell swiftly into the water below. The race began as it always did, members of both teams setting forth from the starting line at dangerous speed. Hufflepuff and Gryffindor were both well known for their rather bruiser-like tactics, yet the start of the race between the two victors from the first round proved to break with tradition. It would be the obstacles that would cause damage to the young lions and badgers and, to absolutely nobody's surprise, among the wounded was none other than Nicholas.
He was a fast flier, but he sure as hell wasn't an elegant one, and he crashed through obstacles with all the grace of a particularly long-haired bowling ball. Thorns cut at him, but the red of his racing uniform hid the colour of the blood rather neatly. For the time being, all he wanted to do was push forward, and so it would come to pass that that was what he did.

It was a close race! Simon couldn't tell much what was going on behind him as a good racer always focused ahead. What he did know was that there were a lot of fellow racers, both Hufflepuff and Gryffindor alike, that were closeby, either neck-and-neck with him or just a little ahead.
The wind was already starting to pick up, and he could sense it being stronger ahead. Plus, it looked as if snow might fall. He gripped his broom tightly, glad that he had some extra hold from the gloves that he had on.
And the race continued.

Serena quirked an eyebrow as she heard the interaction between Hugh and George. Huh. Interesting. She smiled to herself, making no comment on anything, as she pulled her goggles down, ready to go. With zero hesitation, she zoomed forward - quickly navigating through a set of thorns and a passageway with such ease. Huh, maybe she was getting better at this whole thing. Maybe she could actually do this? The Hufflepuff was surprising herself with every turn as she leaned in all the right places, dodging everything with success. Great, this was good!
Wait- water- crap- it was too late. The waterfall had hit her at full force and she struggled to hold on for some reason. Maybe the confidence in her success so far made her take things for granted! Either way, she found her hand quickly slipping off the broom as she fell right off. A desperate attempt to grab the broom mid-air was made but it was too wet. To her doom, she fell. Dammit. The worst part was, she was not wet and that just made her feel colder as she fell through the air. Ughhhh. Stupid water in the middle of winter!
Ugh. The worst part of this was if Hugh saw. He was definitely going to throw her in the water or blast her with aguamenti if she did not beat this stupid thing. Maybe he didn't see? Hopefully, he was distracted by George! That would be great!

This slender Scots Pine would make a fine Christmas Tree but this tree was modified with purpose. A metallic framed seat complete with windshield and stirrups has been added at the back, serving as the tree's counterweight. This sturdy, reliable tree that will definitely get the job done.

As the half-giant kicked his broom into motion, a trail of autumn leaves flurried behind him. Everyone was off around the same time, aside from one badger he noticed stayed behind. Warhead Warren needed a bit longer to launch the rocket he figured. No doubt the damage would come soon enough regardless of that. But Hugh still felt it was an odd strategy if he wasn't going to throw anything.
They zoomed past the thorns, most of them without a scratch. @Nicholas McCowan 's elegant flying didn't go past him either. The giant couldn't help but blurt out a roar of laughter. Laughter that was quickly doused by the sound of a heavy thud against a stone passage. Of course this would happen. He could barely fit these narrow routes if he was focused, so naturally disaster struck as his mind was off trail. Luckily, almost everyone else crashed against the walls along with him. It felt like a massive pity party. He did say almost everyone...
@Serena Towers had managed to navigate through the chaos and seemingly zigzagged her way out of harm's way. It was only when they reached the waterfall up ahead that he noticed a few blood vessels pop in his forehead.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING, TOWERS? DID I NOT TELL YOU THIS WOULD HAPPEN? WHAT WAS ALL THAT STUPID TRAINING FOR IF-" The giant's volatile tirade would go on for quite a stretch of the race and Serena would still hear him roar as his figure shrank into the treeline. That was certainly going to be worth a conversation once this race was finished.

Xailah cared immensely for all of her racers. Well, maybe 'cared' wasn't the exact word, but she consistently caught herself expressing concern for them on and off the track. The little ones especially- Della and Marina. Well, they weren't so little anymore but they were still babies in her eyes. She couldn't help herself; as an older sister she was simply wired that way. In a way, a similar sentiment was extended to the boys as well. But that was beside the point. The lioness cared (for lack of a better word) about her pride more than she cared about most people- which was saying a lot.
So when Nicholas's dim 'luck' found her ears, and pulled her focus away from the track, she was reasonably concerned. While it wasn't something she would have typically paid attention to, she couldn't help but notice that the boy looked grouchier than he did on most days. If... that made any sense at all.
The idea bugged her nonetheless. Was something the matter with him?
This disruption (or what Xailah saw as one) in the young man's otherwise mild and brackish nature, was something she found concern in. There was no spark; no fire she could clearly detect. It was as if he had gone stagnant. Lethargic. Like he was just running through another slow routine.
During a very exciting race at that. That will not do.
Hufflepuff and Gryffindor racers alike, lifted off; shooting into the air like an array of gold and yellow rockets. They sped down the track ruthlessly. Hufflepuff would lose two of their racers, while many others pummeled through obstacles sustaining nothing more than a few painful scrapes, and some sore spots for bruises to form. Xailah followed after the later category of Hufflepuff, after clipping the palate of a tight passageway with the top of her head. It was nothing too serious, thankfully.
The elder Gryffindor sped past several racers, some from her own house, a few from the opposing team. Past the waterfall she spied Nicholas and the small badger.
"McCowan," Xailah called to the cub, maneuvering around the Hufflepuff racer pushing on alongside the two lions, so that she could be closer to her own. She continued when in earshot.
"Pardon me for saying this, but you look as if someone urinated in your porridge." Or however that particularly crude muggle saying about little things called Cheerios went. The hell was a cheerio anyway, aside from a goodbye? Though typically eloquent, Xailah presently found herself at a loss for a better descriptor when it came to Nicholas's overall demeanor. He didn't look grumpy- or irritated- he looked like something bigger than both of those. Foul, perhaps.
Well, she thought he did anyway.
"A knut for your thoughts?" She offered. "If you care to share them, that is," she said, shrugging her shoulders the best she could without disturbing her grip on her broom.

The start of this race was just as bad as the start of her previous race. Couldn't she just not crash into something for once? She knew she should be grateful that there weren't any pigeons around to disrespectfully poop on her again, but not having pigeons wasn't really worth crashing into three trees all at once.

The race had just started and Marina was already failing almost every obstacle. It was going to be okay though. She might not have started off well, but she had an entire race to make up for this. Marina looked forward and focused on the next obstacle, while clinging to her broom.

The wind in her hair, the cool air entering her lungs, the slight shift in weight to narrowly miss a patch of thorns, the freezing air in her lungs causing her to wheeze, the wheezing sending her careening through the narrow passageway and through the waterfall, the freezing air now combining freezing air now soaking her robes, the water in her eyelashes turning to icicles, three new bruises on her head from bonking around the forest—Della loved broom racing. She wouldn't trade this feeling for world.
