A few days after Stage Two of the official duelling championship finished, a first year whom Lucia had never met before but vaguely recognised had approached her. Apparently, the younger girl and a friend were looking to get in some during practice in the form of a 1 v 1 unofficial duel, and wanted Lucia to referee it. Why Lucia? The Hufflepuff wasn't sure. She'd briefly wondered if either of the kids had heard about the unofficial duelling championship which Lucia had helped out with a while ago, but then she remembered that that had been before either of the first-years had even entered Hogwarts. Maybe one of them had watched her duel, or maybe they'd just scoured the duelling rosters until they found a friendly-looking older student. Either way, Lucia was happy to help. It was nice to see people taking an interest in her sport, especially since one of the girls, Jannette, wasn't on a house team yet. The other, Cynthia, was on the Ravenclaw team, which made Lucia realise where she recognised her from: the girl had been paired with Eun-ji in the last stage.
Hopefully it will be a nice, chill afternoon, Lucia mused as she pushed open the Duelling Club doors on the agreed day. It would be interesting to moderate a duel again, especially one where there was a definite difference in experience between the two duellists. The task should be fairly easy for Lucia, too, thanks to her multiple years on the Hufflepuff duelling team. If one or both of the younger girls hadn't turned up yet, Lucia would wait for them to arrive and greet them when they did. "Cynthia, you go on that side - you know the drill - and Jannette, you go on that one." Lucia directed the girls to opposite ends of the piste. "Um, Jannette, do you know the rules?" If she didn't, Lucia would attempt to give her a quick rundown: no physical contact, don't attack an unconscious opponent... all common sense really. "Just... be nice. We'll stop when someone gets knocked out, or I'll stop you both if the duel goes on too long." A smile to both younger girls. "On your marks! Wands drawn!" Lucia drew her own wand and held it out horizontally, a barrier between Cynthia and Jannette. "And... begin!" Lucia swung her wand down and stepped out of the firing zone.

Nervous and anxious were probably the two words to describe how Jannette was feeling at this moment. Ever since the incident with Cynthia, things were getting tense between the two; besides the mean comments, Jannette makes about Cynthia when talking with her Snek Squad friends, to just simply glaring at her. But everything came to this exact moment! From reading dueling books to training with Colin everything was on the line. It’s embarrassing yet funny to think that these two first-year students are simply just a proxy war for their families.
Oh, how these two will laugh at this moment when they’re older…
Nonetheless, Jannette had a sense of pride as she strutted into the dueling club. A newfound confidence seemed to fuel the girl with each step she took. The dueling referee, Lucia was a fourth-year Hufflepuff. Jannette knew absolutely nothing about the Hufflepuff referee, and from an outside perspective really shows how small Jannettes bubble is from the plethora of diverse people in Hogwarts!

‘You know the drill?’ Wait, was Cynthia really a part of the Duelling Club?! Did she have experience with dueling before? It was a little scary to think for Jannette to think that Cynthia had actual experience with dueling vs. Jannette who had zero experience; well if you don't count her experience of almost getting incendio’d in the face and being saved by Hunter Argentum as dueling experience. (See Jannette, not all Ravenclaws are bad.)
"Um, Jannette, do you know the rules?"
Jannette nodded sheepishly like the first-year she was. Of course, she knew the rules, she learned about the rules vaguely with her dueling coach, Colin; was something like -- keep using spells until your opponent cries, or something like that.
Just... be nice. We'll stop when someone gets knocked out, or I'll stop you both if the duel goes on too long."
She breathed through her nose heavily now as nerves seemed to be setting in. Oh, Merlin, she was actually going to be dueling someone. In all honesty, Jannette thought (with wishful thinking) that maybe Cynthia might’ve chickened out. But now knowing that Cynthia is a duelist, well, it was inevitable that the Ravenclaw was going to show up. There were so many things going through Jannettes mind at this point from; ‘What if I lose?’ to ‘What if I fail to cast a single spell’ or even worse, ‘What if Cynthia was right? What if I am Ignorant.’

There was no time to be nervous, Jannette wasn’t going to fail, and a feeling of determination fuels the girl. The brunette draws her wand as she gets into her dueling stance. She wasn’t going to run, nor wasn’t going to cry, and more importantly, she wasn’t ignorant like Cynthia thinks she is. No, Jannette was going to prove to her friends that she was a fighter! She was going to prove to her House that she was ambitious! To her professors that she was resourceful! To Headmaster Lear, and all the students of Hogwarts that she was going to win!

Lucia smiled at what she assumed was friendly banter between the girls. There was often a little bit of trash talking before a duel started - after all, magic was about your mental state just as much as it was your physical, if not more. To cast a spell well, and therefore to duel well, you had to believe you could. Confidence was imperitive to being a good duellist; Lucia assumed it was the same in other sports, although she'd never tried them and doubted she ever would. Having dropped flying class as soon as she could, the Hufflepuff was in no hurry to get on a broom again any time soon.
When the duel began, neither of the duellists displayed any hesitation. In fact, they both immediately spoke the incantations of two of the most aggressive spells in a first-year's arsenal: the Dancing-Feet Spell and, a favourite of many duellists, the Fire-Making Spell. As the jets of light left each girl's wand, Lucia found herself holding her breath. Jannette's spell slammed into Cynthia's chest, and the Ravenclaw suddenly snapped to attention, holding her arms out and swaying to a nonexistent beat as she waltzed with an imaginary partner. Meanwhile, Jannette herself spun out of the way of Cynthia's spell, which harmlessly collided with the wall.

Everything felt like it happened in an instant. As flashes of lights flash reflect off the hues of Jannettes glasses, the girl closes her eyes, ‘Please hit, please hit, please hit.’ Jannette slowly opened her eyes and she couldn’t believe what she just did, her mouth dropping. Jannette Honey Applebottom had successfully casted a spell on Cynthia Mariam Beaufort in a duel! And to make things even better, somehow (by the graces of Lord Malus and Merlin of course) Jannette was able to spin her way out of a fiery incendio situation.
‘Curse it. Apparently, You are not as flammable as your apple.’
“♪ Awwwww, you lost to a noooOOooOoonnn-Dueeelliisttt yoOOoOuuuUu losssttt toooo uhhh NoooOoonnnn-dueeeliissttt! ♪” Jannette taunted in a cheeky tune, before sticking her tongue out and blowing raspberries at her rival. There was something special about this moment, it felt… good being able to hit Cynthia with a spell, no not good, it felt powerful! It was like studying for a Charms test and passing with an O. No wonder people enjoyed dueling.
‘That’s all you’ve got, Jannette? Some dancing spell? Tarantallegra?’
“N-NOooOOOOOOo!” her face would turn as red as the apple that Cynthia lit on fire a few weeks prior. Sadly, Jannette didn’t have much in her repertoire besides Tarantallegra which was an offensive spell.
‘Well, Jannette, I’ve got worse spells up my sleeve, so be ready, once more, for your good luck to fade away.’
Jannette scoffs at Cynthia’s comment, trying her best not to roll her eyes,“Its noht luck you hag! Oi’m gonna make sure you cry all dah way back to dah dorms ‘n wish you didn’ mess wih’ me like yah did in dah cour’yard!!!!!”1 She squeaks loudly, before raising her wand in the air, aiming right at Cynthia…
Reducio1. “It's not luck you hag! I'm gonna make sure you cry all the way back to the dorms and wish you didn’t mess with me like you did in the courtyard!!!!!”
