General The Ravenclaw Table 2018-2019

Ysabelle stood in the line amongst the other first years waiting to be sorted. After what felt like a century to her anxious mind she finally heard it. "Raine, Ysabelle." She froze momentarily before she walked over to the stool and sat down. Her nerves were running haywire, she was so nervous but she was also amazed. Never had she ever thought she'd endure something like this, as a muggle-born this seemed to be the stuff of fairy tales. But as the sorting hat was placed upon her head, she was brought back to the reality that this was really happening and she was really here. Due to her being a very small girl the hat slipped slightly over her face covering her chocolate brown eyes and chestnut hair.

She thought briefly of the houses and the few traits she could remember for each house. Gryffindor was the house of the brave and courageous, Ravenclaw was the house of wit and intelligence, Hufflepuff housed those who were patient and loyal, while Slytherin housed those of ambition and cunning wit. Immediately, Ysabelle knew Gryffindor was not gonna be her house. 'Maybe Hufflepuff, I am very kind and loyal.' She thought.

But as soon she finished that thought the sorting hat announced it's choice. "RAVENCLAW!" The hat bellowed out and the table that seemed to be filled with those wearing the color blue yelled out in cheer and applauded for their new housemate. Ysabelle's face lit up in joy and the hat was removed from her head before she approached the Ravenclaw table and took a seat quietly but her eyes darted around the great hall and at all the tables including her own.

Amanda watched all of the new first years stream in. She remembered her sorting ceremony. When she had been placed in Ravenclaw, Amanda had felt quite proud because her father had been in Ravenclaw when he was at Hogwarts. But she had also felt worried. Worried that she wouldn’t live up to the Ravenclaw legacy. Worried that nobody would like her. Worried that she would flunk. But here she was. Amanda smiled. I can’t believe I’ve made it this far. I thought for sure that I wouldn’t make it through my first year. Even though her parents had both attended Hogwarts when they were younger, Amanda had always lived among Muggles. Her parents wanted a normal life for their kids until they went off to wizarding school. When she had arrived at Hogwarts, it had all been so new and foreign to Amanda. But now it felt like her second home.

Amanda noticed that the girl to her right was crying. She was discreet and quiet about it, but crying nonetheless. Amanda felt bad for the girl. She obviously didn’t want to be here at Hogwarts. Amanda wasn’t sure if the girl wanted to be talked to, but she couldn’t just sit there and watch this girl cry. Amanda put her hand on the girl’s shoulder. “Hey,” she said, smiling kindly. “My name’s Amanda. Are you doing okay? I know it’s a silly question, but I just wanted to make sure that everything is alright.”

“Oh, I may be on the side of the angels, but don't think for one second that I am one of them.”

May looked up at the girl sitting beside her. She stared at the girl, Amanda, with a blank expression, her mouth slightly open and tears streaming down her cheeks. She didn't know how to respond. She was just wrapped up in her own tiny bubble of worries. She just thought about what if someone noticed her crying, not how she would respond!

"I-I..", May stuttered, avoiding eye contact. She bit her lip. This is exactly what she didn't want to happen. If you didn't want to get noticed you wouldn't be crying!, May told herself. This brief moment of minor panic relieved her of all her other thoughts. However, it soon just added to the growing pile of negativity. She looked back up at the girl. She looked a bit like May. Amanda had short dark hair, almost identical to May's. However, May had blue eyes, the eyes that she got from her father's. She hated thinking about him. May's face became red and her tears started flowing heavier.

Just stop! Stop crying! Stop thinking! Your doing this to yourself! It's your fault! Just stop!, May scolded in her head. That just made things worse. She had to say something, anything.

"I'm not supposed to be here, wherever I am. I don't know what this is. I feel like I'm in a movie or something. I mean there is no logistical reason for this!" She stared desperately at there girl. May's eyes scanned for answers. Real answers. Not just, 'It's magic'. Magic isn't real, it couldn't be.

The girl looked up at Amanda, seeming to be searching for something to say. Amanda smiled encouragingly. The girl stuttered a bit and then burst into tears. Amanda watched with concern as the girl began crying again. Oh dear, I hope that’s not my fault, she thought. I didn’t think that I was that scary. The girl had short brown hair similar to Amanda’s and bright blue eyes. The girl began saying that she wasn’t supposed to be here, at Hogwarts.

Amanda could relate. She had thought that it was all a joke at first, some silly hoax that her parents pulled on her. She had felt like she couldn’t trust anybody because they all had seemed so strange and foreign to her. When the girl finished talking, Amanda thought as to how best respond. She obviously didn’t want the generic answer, “magic.” She had probably been told that countless times already. So instead, Amanda said, “I know you may feel that way, like you don’t belong. I did too at first. But trust me, if you didn’t belong, you wouldn’t be here, much less know that this place exists.” Amanda grinned. “As for there being a logistical reason for all this, there simply isn’t. At least not one that I can give you. I didn’t know about this whole magic thing until I was seven years old, when my sister got her letter. I didn’t believe it for a whole year until my sister came back and told us all about it. Plus, my parents apparently went to school here too. So, my point being, it’s real. All of it.

May gazed at the girl for a few seconds. Her mouth moving up and down, trying to figure out what to say. She looked back down at her feet. She was so frustrated with herself. Why couldn't she just let herself believe it, it would be easier the searching for a seemingly nonexistent explanation. She felt like she was drowning in a murky liquid and was trying to reach for something to pull her out. That something was her grip on reality. The thing is, that murky substance was real, and was this magical world. She started lightly hitting her head with her fists. Her mind was an endless river that went around in circles, questioning the same things. Her river was overflowing. She needed to let it run it's on path, but May kept making it deeper and deeper.

Inhala

Exhala

That's one of the many things her mother would have said in Spanish. Her thoughts started to spill over, creating their own path, it was nothing more the a trickle of water at that point. She only had started to believe. However, May was scared, where would she go on this to magical path, it almost felt safer in this endless, frustrating cycle of non-believing. She started to build the wall up again.

"I-I can't. It doesn't make sense, and it has to. I'm sorry. Maybe I'm dreaming this whole thing up.", she laughed at the idea, it was the only thing that could be true, "An absurdly long, and detailed one at that." She smiled cheerfully, and started pinching her arm. She pinched harder. If your dreaming just pinch yourself and you'll wake up, that's what everyone had told her. She started hitting herself. At this point it wasn't even about trying to escape what she labeled a dream, or a nightmare, it was about the now pure frustration she felt. Her heart rate sped up, and she struggled to catch her breath.

"Just believe, it would be easier, just do it.", she whimpered to herself. She shook her head and stared down at her shoes, she almost had believed, just a little bit. But, it was too difficult. May forgot entirely about the people around her, just that nothing made sense, and that the room was spinning and getting smaller and smaller, and all the things that she couldn't believe was flashing before her like a movie.

"I can't be here. I n-need to get out of here.", May gasped. She stumbled off the bench and started toward the exit of the Great hall.

The sorting ceremony had been, well, magical. A talking hat, AN ACTUAL TALKING HAT had been placed on her head and read into the deepest parts of her soul, or mind, or whatever. Not only this, but it had placed her in a house, into Ravenclaw. As it so stood, though not that she was an except in anyway, she was in the scholarly, the smart house. She did not even know magic existed until she had started to make weird things happen, and even then no conformation until she received her acceptance letter to Hogwarts. But even with magic, all the gifts she had been given through her amazing abilities, she felt a little lost at not becoming Gryffindor. They were suposed to be the brave ones right? Was she not brave?
She had no such miseries about not being picked to be Slytherin or Hufflepuff, Slytherins were the 'evil' ones or what not, and Hufflepuff were well, everyone just seemed to say they were nice. This information she had only come across by listening too the other kids on the train and the gossipy other first years while they were being led to the great hall. Not that she wasn't happy to be called smart, but she had always seen herself as secretly brave, someone who would one day break out of her shell and be, well, great. But now it seemed she would forever be the book nerd, that in her very soul she would always just be that smart kid.
Well too be honest she wasn't all that smart. She just never had any friends in the muggle world so she ended up always spending time with her homework and books instead. She was studious, but smart, well that was yet too be seen, especially since she assumed magical learning and muggle learning were worlds apart.
So engrossed in her inner thoughts she was totally oblivious to the world around here, she say neither the crying girl nore the one trying to sooth her, she never say the hair loosing spell or the one who cast it. All that was happening in her own little world was the script of her own inner monologue and her eyes on the Grffindor table.

Rowan could feel the butterflies in her stomach so clearly as if they were real, and they were still in the side hall! She nervously messed with her hair, quickly redoing the braid she used as a headband of sorts, though then of course she had nothing to keep her hands occupied. The noise of footsteps drawing near broke her out of her thoughts and she looks up to see a member of staff beckoning them forward.

Following the cluster of her fellow unsorted first years, she bumps into a few accidentally and throws them apologetic smiles. The growing noise level mixes her nervousness along with excitement; she simply couldn't wait! Just a moment later she see the Great Hall for the very first time, the magnificence of it all was amazing! The ceiling, oh she could not stop staring at him, being jarred out of her thoughts when she bumps into the boy in front of her. The muffled laughter from the tables on either side causes her to blush.

One by one, the number of students on the list in front of her dwindles as they are sorted, eventually coming up to her name.

"MacKenna, Rowan!"

She practically skips up to the stool and eagerly awaits her judgement from the hat, moments later being sorted into..

RAVENCLAW!

Taking the hat off and thanking it, she runs off to join her family for the next seven years.

Astrid sat at the Ravenclaw table with her hair in her face and hat almost falling off her head. She felt tired, clearly shown with her forming red eyes, but was kept awake by everyone talking loudly to each other and the sorting hat yelling out the new comer's house. She's only been here for a days but she's already tuckered out by everything. The magic, the people, ESPECIALLY the authorities even though she has only met a few from her memory. Not to mention she hardly built anything in the past week, and that's her only fun hobby.

She looks at the people next to her, and they are already sucked into conversation with someone else. She doesn't want to bother anybody, so she closes her eyes and tries think of happy thoughts. Happy thought... She likes her friends, so she tries to think of memories with them. Atlas, that just made her miss them more then she already does. It made her tear up, but then she thought of what this school could do for her. Give her a future, let's her magically build stuff which would probably make her hobby more fun, and she gets to make more friends than the 3 she already has. She finally kind of felt better, and started to eat and drink what was left on her plate and cup. She still wanted to cry, but maybe later.

Rylet was brought forth from her contemplation by the sudden yelling of a name, something to do with an R. Ralf, Ryder, Raisin? It didn't matter and she shrugged the issue off. However this particular incident was not over yet, as a few seconds later "Ravenclaw!" was announced to the world by the weird talking hat. She secretly loved that hat, it was gloriously disconcerting. The whole thing was punctuated by the newest Ravenclaw plopping down right beside her. She seemed like a rather happy little thing with red hair and a pale complexion much like her own. Not only this, but to her other side was another first year with a sad almost forlorn look on her face. Was she about to cry?? She was sandwiched by polar opposites. One one side, the happy girl, and on the other the sad one. She was the meat in the middle of a sandwich of two different breads. Like the sandwich maker just couldnt decide, not that she blamed them. Decisions were hard. Rylet vacillated over what do do next. Should she talk to either one of her new bread buddies? Maybe butter them up with a little conversation. Be the jam too their jelly... Or perhaps she should first abandon her ridiculous metaphor...? Ya that seemed like the wisest choice. She looked out of the corner of her eye at both respective parties. But decisions were not really her calling, she was more a go with the flow and if something happens it happens and then it can be dealt with, well if it is necessary and not too much work that is. Unless it was homework, homework was always necessary and required effort, but she did it anyways for some reason. God forbid she do her laundry or go hang out some place with real people! That was way too much effort, but sit down and write a five page essay now that she could do. No wonder she had no friends, not that she didn't already realize this of course but- buuut she was getting off topic again. Stalling, definitely stalling. Wow she really had an aversion to human contact, perhaps it was an allergy, she should get tested. Could you even get tested for something like that if it even existed? She was in a magical world unbeknownst to the common doctor so it was possible. She spend a few moments contemplating her predicament of allergens before escaping her mental redundancy with a scrunched face. No more procrastinating. She was a magical person, in a magical school, newly part of a magical world. She could say 'hi' to a real person, or magical person or whatever. She could, she really could. She was going to do it, right now, any second. In 3...2...1... ya no she needed a few more seconds. Maybe she should plan out what she was going to say first, plans were always good. Ok, she'd start out with some really funny joke, but what to say. Hmmm, "nock nock", "Who is there", "Witch," "Witch who?", "witch way is this joke going...?". Wow that was bad, even for her. Rylet resisted the urge to hid her face in her hands and groan because, well, that would be embarrassing. She wasn't really sure why it would be, but it just would. Alright, it was time, now or never. LADIES AND GENTLEMAN REV YOUR ENGINES!
"Hi my names Rylet!" She chirped while staring at absolutely nothing, her body facing dead center forwards. Her sudden exclamation of greeting and name coming out through tense vocal cords, causing the pitch of her voice to raise a tad shrill at the end. Clearing her voice she pretended it never happened. If she didn't bring any attention to it nobody would notice, she was sure.

Grayson approached the table with a significant amount of unease. The ceremony had bolstered his confidence and happiness; however, this moment of temporal happiness quickly dissipated as he found himself lost in an endless sea of blue at his table. Fear had once more taken control of the young boy's mind and body, so he felt himself crumble down beneath his already meager frame. He lost height and weight in a moment where his proudly exposed chest receded into itself whilst his head tucked down to match the thousand yard stare of the stone floor. Suddenly, he wandered around aimlessly looking for a seat, his feet in pushing him forward in an awkward dance of sorts. He walked up and down the aisle as name after name was called with child after child being sat down for a myriad of minutes.

Still, he knew that he could not continue this endless march forever, so he exited his staring contest with the floor only for a minute to find himself at an angled path where Grayson's right leg collided against this poor girl's back as she chirped out her name. Grayson meekly slipped to the floor as he speedily backed away. He thought that he had heard her name: Rylet. Still, his inner monologue went into a fevered frenzy as he wondered Why did you do this? Clumsy!!! Clumsy!!! CLumsy!!! C'mon Grayson, you've mastered the art of isolationism, and look what you have done. Idiot! Idiot! You-. .. This persistent self-sustained mental beatdown continued for ages as his eyes gazed upward at this brown-haired, blue-eyed witch. Grayson knew that he should apologize, but he could not bring himself to find the words since he could not find the route that would allow him to leave his head.
