===The cold air hit Morgan like a slap in the face as soon as she stepped outside her dorm. It was Valentine's Day. They call it Valentine's Day, I call it Tuesday. Everything about the day just filled her with a feeling of dread. The romantic atmosphere was thick, cloying, like honey, and she couldn't help but feel disgusted by it all.

===Morgan hurried to her class, trying to escape the romantic atmosphere, but no matter where she looked, Morgan saw evidence of the holiday everywhere she turned. Hearts and flowers adorned every window, while couples walked hand in hand, stealing glances at each other and looking deeply in love. Even the sky above her seemed to be in on the act, with pink and red heart-shaped clouds drifting lazily across the blue.
===Why did everyone have to be so damn lovey-dovey? she thought to herself.
===She rolled her eyes at every happy couple she saw. The loved-up idiots, she thought.
===She sees one girl receiving a giant teddy bear from her boyfriend and she can't help but to scoff at them. Morgan felt nothing but disgust at the sickly sweet scene.
===Even her classmates were talking about what they were going to do with their significant others. She wished she could just hide away from the world until February 15th.
===She thought it was all so tacky and commercialized. What was the point of celebrating love on one specific day? Love should be celebrated every day, in her opinion. She didn't understand why people got so caught up in the hype.

===She could feel the vomit rising in her throat as she tried to focus on the words in front of her. The library was her sanctuary, her safe place. But even here, she couldn't escape the constant barrage of PDA. The smell of cheap cologne and perfume only made it worse.
===Gagging, she shoved her way past a couple making out in front of her. She needed to get out of there before she threw up. Thankfully, she made it to the door and slammed it shut behind her, “Worst day,” she said taking a deep breath of fresh air.
===Maybe she could find a quiet spot somewhere else where she could actually concentrate.

===The grounds were still and quiet. She walked quickly towards the tree. She could hear the laughter of the couples around her, but she paid them no mind. All she wanted was to escape their cloying presence and find some peace and quiet.
===When she reached the tree, she slumped down against it, burying her nose in her book. But eventually, the laughter of the couples began to filter back into her consciousness.
===She sighed and put her book down, leaning back against the trunk of the tree. She closed her eyes and let her mind wander. It wasn't long before she was lost in a daydream.

Love was in the air, and it was making Rhys sick. It seemed that everywhere they turned they were bombarded with new variations of a constant variable: couples in love. Whether it be a giant bouquet of flowers, a bunch of balloons, a teddy bear, or -- god forbid-- all three, Rhys couldn't seem to get away from couples sharing gifts and being all lovey-dovey on their least favorite day: Valentine's Day.

And it was ironic for many reasons. One, because all these "couples" in the classrooms, corridors, and basically everywhere at Hogwarts were statistically doomed to split up within a few months to a year. That was it. A year, tops, and then poof! It'd be over, and they'd be stuck with all this junk left over that would only serve as a reminder of the 'love' they once had, a reminder of memories that would now be painful to remember, and that giant teddy bear that Martha got from Johnny would make its way to a donation bin if it wasn't burned. And all the Jartha shippers would be left to wonder, how had it gone wrong, when it seemed that on Valentine's day, everything had been fine?

It was also ironic that Valentine's Day was started as a Christian feast to honor St. Valentine, who became a martyr when he was killed for spreading the word of God in Rome. He was killed for talking about Jesus.. And now it had become a holiday all about love, which, yeah, could still connect with Jesus and how he advocated loving your neighbor and all that stuff, but.

It definitely didn't start out intending to turn into this: a greatly commercialized holiday in which candy companies made billions at the expense of people wanting to express love to their significant others with material items.

Like, why not do something simple? Go on a picnic, or stargaze... don't waste money on someone that you might not even be with for the rest of your life. And if you have to buy chocolate, just get it the day after, when it's all on clearance.

It was all just so pointless.

Rhys was glad when their classes finally ended for the day, and they were finally able to leave the space they'd been forced to be in, where everywhere various students flaunted their Valentine's Day gifts. A girl that had sat next to Rhys in Charms had gushed non-stop about the giant bouquet of flowers that her boyfriend had gotten, while all Rhys could think of was that the flowers heavily aggravated their allergies. They'd wanted to say, "Hey, you have someone that loves you enough to buy you flowers, congrats or whatever... now please leave me alone and get those flowers the hell out of my face," but unfortunately, they hadn't had the chance, because then the lesson had started and they didn't want to lose House points.

As they walked over the grounds for a place to study, Rhys heard someone mumble "Worst day," as they slammed the door. They turned to see a Gryffindor girl quickly hurry towards a tree, and quickly deduced that she must've been the voice they'd heard a moment ago, as she was the only person even remotely near where Rhys was.

Huh, Rhys thought. Someone understands. It seemed that everyone they'd encountered today just loved Valentine's Day, or just otherwise wouldn't talk bad about it given that it was a day celebrating love. Now, they normally would just ignore the other girl and find their own spot to settle down and do their own thing, but this girl intrigued Rhys. Before they knew it, they found themself walking over and sitting down a few feet away from the girl. She had her head leaned back, eyes closed as she lost herself to whatever imaginary alternate universe she created to escape this Valentine's Day hellhole.

"Guessing you're not a fan of Valentine's Day, either," Rhys spoke, casually bringing their knees up to their chest and crossing their arms around their legs as they looked over to the girl."All the lovey-dovey happiness and stuff... it sickens me."

They hoped they didn't startle the girl too much, and also realized that she might react badly to this, since they were essentially intruding on a moment of quiet. They knew how it felt to finally have some peace and quiet and then just as suddenly have it disrupted, and the last time that had happened to Rhys it ended in them breaking the other kid's nose and then later receiving a howler from their father. But if this girl was bothered by Rhys's presence, they could just as easily apologize and leave.

===Even in her sleep, everything around her was covered in a thin layer of pink. Hearts were everywhere—on the walls, the floors, even the ceiling. It was like she was trapped in some sort of love-themed prison. It seemed like her dream was mocking her with this seemingly inescapable display of love. She just wanted someone to wake her up from this hellish dream.
===She was jolted awake by the sound of someone's voice. “Guessing you're not a fan of Valentine's Day, either.” Morgan let out a small hum in response, still groggy from sleep. She was thankful that someone had disturbed her peace stupid, ridiculous nightmare, but she was also confused as to why this person was in here.
===All the lovey-dovey happiness and stuff... it sickens me,” the person said, confirming Morgan's suspicions that they shared her dislike for Valentine's Day.
===A bunch of commercialized BS,” she said, finally fully awake and looking at the person who had woken her up. They were probably around the same age as Morgan, “It's like they're trying to brainwash us into thinking that love is some kind of fairytale. But it's not. Love is messy and complicated.
===Anyways.. I'm glad you're not a fan, either. I was starting to think I was the only one” She chuckled softly. “Morgan, by the way. Your fellow Valentine’s hater,” extending her hand.
===And you are?

The girl took a moment to process Rhys’s sudden appearance, seeming to wake from a daze and take a moment to wake up before responding.

“A bunch of commercialized BS,” She agreed, assessing them. “It's like they're trying to brainwash us into thinking that love is some kind of fairytale. But it's not. Love is messy and complicated.” Rhys nodded as she spoke, thinking of their parents’ complicated relationship dynamic. They loved each other, and loved their children, but each varied in how they showed love. Rhys’s mum expressed it openly, in letters and care packages, while their dad preferred to keep his displays of love few and far between. “Anyways.. I'm glad you're not a fan, either. I was starting to think I was the only one,” The girl chuckled. “Morgan, by the way. Your fellow Valentine’s hater,” She extended her hand to Rhys. “And you are?”

Rhys hesitated only slightly before they shook her hand, meeting her gaze steadily. They had a firm handshake, something that their father had insisted on teaching each of his children. Something about making a good first impression. Not that they particularly cared, but it was something that had been burned into Rhys’s mind, and now a force of habit.

“Rhys Read. I am also relieved to find someone to share a dislike of Valentine’s Day with.” They said cooly, letting go of Morgan’s hand and stuffing their own hands in their pockets. “It’s actually quite damaging when you think about it. All my life I was told what to believe about love, and I had to learn the hard way that I’d been lied to. Not to mention that not everyone experiences love the way we’ve been taught to expect.” They gave a dry chuckle. “There’s no princes in shining armor for me. Mostly because that’s not really what I’m looking for, but I digress. Imagine my reaction when I found out that love isn’t limited just to that between a man and woman. Society has done a sufficient amount of harm by brainwashing younger generations.”

===We all know the drill. Girl meets boy, they fall in love, and then they live happily ever after. But what happens when that fairytale is turned upside down?
===It’s actually quite damaging when you think about it. All my life I was told what to believe about love, and I had to learn the hard way that I’d been lied to. Not to mention that not everyone experiences love the way we’ve been taught to expect. There’s no princes in shining armor for me. Mostly because that’s not really what I’m looking for, but I digress. Imagine my reaction when I found out that love isn’t limited just to that between a man and woman. Society has done a sufficient amount of harm by brainwashing younger generations.
===Society tells us that love is supposed to look a certain way. We are fed with movie scenes and lifestyles that present us with this 'traditional' way of loving. So when we don't feel those same fireworks for someone of the opposite gender, it can feel like we're doing something wrong.
===Morgan nods in understanding, her own mind reeling with the implications of what Rhys is saying. It's a lot to take in, but she can see the validity in their words.
===It can be really confusing and overwhelming when you realize your feelings don't fit into the traditional mold. But there's nothing wrong with being attracted to people of the same gender. Just because it's not 'normal' doesn't mean it's not valid.
===And I think one of the beauties of love is that it can be between friends, family members, or even strangers. It's something that connects us all. Because ultimately, we all just want to be loved. And we should be able to love who we want without judgement.
===Morgan paused, reflecting on her own words. Of all the things she hates, love is at the top of the list. And yet here she is, having a conversation with Rhys about love.
===It's not that she doesn't believe in love. She's just never been a romantic person herself. She's never felt the all-consuming passion that some people seem to experience. For her, love has always been something that other people talked about. Something that happened to other people, not to her. She's seen the way love can change people. She's seen how it can make them act differently, how it can make them happy or sad.
===She's never been one for fairytales or happily ever afters. She's always been more pragmatic and realistic. She's never been the type of person to believe in love at first sight or soulmates. For her, love is something that is built over time. It's something that is earned through patience and work.
===She's happy just being on her own, and she's not going to force herself to feel something that she doesn't. She knows that she's not missing out on anything because she's found love in other ways. She has close friendships and relationships with her family members that are just as special and meaningful to her as any romantic love could be.
===Morgan gazed at the young couple kissing under the tree and wrinkled her nose in disgust. It was just so.. icky. She couldn't help but think how juvenile they looked, clinging to each other like that. It was so cliche, like something out of a cheap romance novel. “Who does that?” she asked, rhetorically.
===The girl was pretty enough, she supposed, but she was vapid and airheaded. And the boy was just an immature kid who didn't know anything about the world. They were completely wrong for each other, but somehow they were blissfully unaware of that fact.
===She didn't understand why people enjoyed doing that sort of thing. It was just gross. So what if they were in love? They didn't need to flaunt it like that for everyone to see. It was just asking for trouble. “What do you think? Should love be publicly displayed or kept private?
