In a small stone building attached to the stables lies Professor Blumenthal's office. The door is always open, and should one choose to enter, they will be greeted with a simple "it's open".
Inside is an office space that can only be described as beautiful, nothing like the exterior. There is a large purple rug on the ground, depicting moon phases and constellations. Behind the desk, which is a deep mahogany and littered with tiny trinkets, is a large fireplace. Whether for show or for function nobody knows, as the Professor prefers to be cold and doesn't use it, at least not in view of students. Upon this stone fireplace are photographs of places Sabine has visited, along with the creatures she's seen. To the right of the fireplace is a tall bookshelf with all the books on magical creatures one can imagine, some tattered from their years of use from either the current or former professors.
In front of the desk are two seats with plush, velvet purple cushions. These are almost delicate looking; a clumsy student might think twice before sitting down in one, should they accidentally break it.
The walls are covered in photographs, framed train tickets, tapestries, and paper souvenirs from travels.
To the left of the fireplace is a rather large phonograph on a mahogany stand, which gets plenty of use by its owner. If one should choose to enter the room, it is likely they will find Sabine listening to something as she grades. Leaning on the wall behind the phonograph is a beautifully made cello.
A porcelain tea set sits atop a small circular table in the corner of the room closest to the door, atop a lacy white doily. In the other corner, next to the fireplace, is a tall bonsai tree well cared for by the professor.
By all accounts, the most fantastic thing in the room is the skylight in the center of the ceiling, enchanted to be almost unbreakable and for natural light to filter in.
Now, if this student who entered chose to stay, Sabine would look up from her desk. "I'm assuming there's something I can help you with?"
RULES OF THE OFFICE

I. Please do not godmod Professor Blumenthal. This is an IC thread where I can interact with you, please don't make it an unpleasant experience for either of us!
II. As stated before, this is an IC thread. Please ask any OOC questions in the FAQ Thread.
III. This is an IC forum, so all posts must abide by the 200 word count requirement.
IV. You may not backdate any threads here to before January 8, 2023, as this was Sabine's hiring date. Any post in this thread without a date will be assumed to occur on the day they were posted.
V. If another student is utilizing the office, you must wait until either they have left or they have not posted in three or more months, in which case the office will reopen.
VI. Students younger than third year may roleplay in this forum or in the office, but may not say that they have come from class as they do not take CoMC until the third year.
VII. If you would like to make an appearance in one of my lessons, please reach out in owls! There’s no guarantee I can fit you in, but there is always a chance.

The bond between a human and a beloved pet was strong. But strong did not necessarily mean the sixth-year loved the great-horned owl in her arms. Especially not when Aspen had chowed off one of her fingers one summer. A friend perhaps? Granted, someone should have told her mother that it wasn't too good of an idea to put a massive bird of prey under the care of a twelve-year-old. To tame away the natural instinct took some work, and Aurelia certainly did not put in enough at all. Given that the bird still held on tight to its natural drive to hunt and to even rip out her finger with the sole reasoning that she was hungry.
Now, it had been around four years under her care. Delivering letters to and fro for many, many months. Aurelia would consider Aspen more of a tool than her own pet. Aspen was rather independent she preyed on the critters that scurried along the hallways and grounds yet came to service whenever Aurelia needed. That was when the problem surfaced, Aurelia rewarded Aspen after every trip as an incentive to continue the work. With a wave of a wand and a conjured bird, a short life that Aspen removed from the world in a split second. Years Aspen had been fed magically conjured birds and transfigured objects frequently. That certainly was not healthy. Yet the witch would not know. How could she have?
Then came the fine day where she would find Aspen lying on the floor of the owlery. A sight that spiked a rare emotion of desperation and fear within her. There was no blood. The attempt at communication in her owl animagi form herself was to no avail. All she got were weak coos, nothing close to comprehensible. All she knew was that Aspen needed help. The hem of her robes flying behind her, Aurelia ran, surprisingly not to the hospital wing, but rather to the door of the care of magical creature's office.
The knocks, loud, clear and desperate to alert the professor of her presence. Her presence - a very unsettling peculiar one, bringing chills down spines and discomfort. Especially with her current state of mind, the aura exuded was more terrifying than she was if calm. That certainly was not great for the weak, albeit massive bird cradled in her arms.
"Professor Ta -" Her words were cut short upon the realisation that it was not the old professor greeting her. Regardless, she would continue, the desperation evident in her voice despite an effort to remain polite, "My owl, I have tried communicating with it, shes not very responsive. It's unwell, and I'm extremely concerned. It has been delivering letters recently, once or twice a week at most. I don't know what happened. I was hoping you could help."

The student who stood before her looked a mess. Though it was clear she attempted to veil her concern and fear with a regal facade, Sabine saw right through it. She hardly even cared that her name was mistaken for Tala Takagi's (though she wouldn't be surprised if it happened a number of other times as she got situated in her new position), and she stood almost immediately to circle around the desk. Cast aside were the papers she worked on, scribbling out to-do lists and marking down notes for classes yet to come. "How long has your owl been unresponsive?"january 8, 2023.
The professor asked, voice even. She crossed the room to a large chest and pried it open with a gentle whisper of "Alohamora", rifling through various jars and bottles until she came upon one that satisfied her. Pet tonic, a necessity for any magizoologist to have in their arsenal. Sabine turned once more to the student, offering as comforting a smile as she could muster, and held up the bottle, shaking it once, twice, three times for effect. "I promise I can have your owl all fixed up lickety split, okay? All you have to do is trust me."@Aurelia Notresvace.

"Healing charms seem to be of no effect, I don't think the damage is physical." Aurelia said. Someone had cursed her pet from that alone. Whatever sadistic monster would do such a thing? Then again, Hogwarts was a house for some insane individuals. The new professor made some space, clearing the area on the table where Aurelia carefully set her pet down. The sixth year was anxious. Aspen, the majestic bird who was always strong and fierce with a big personality, was now anything but. Throughout the four years under her care, Aurelia had never seen her so sickly. "Just a while ago. I came straight down from the owlery here." The adolescent witch answered with worry evident in her voice. "Just yesterday, she was brooding my letters as usual. I collected them and gave her a treat. She looked alright and sounded just like herself when I talked to her." Some more elaboration was perhaps needed. Not so much that Aurelia understood other owls as an owl animagi, but rather the critical fact that the treat was a small bird conjured from her own wand.
Trust me. What else could she do but? Hogwarts didn't hire incompetent staff, at least, she hoped not. Aurelia hadn't known that there was a change in the person running this particular subject. "What is that?" Seeing the bottle, Aurelia moved her hand over her pet's face. Unless she knew what it was, the Gryffindor would not allow it on her pet.

Sabine listened closely, brows furrowed as she considered the girl's words. It sounded as if the owl had been eating something unsatisfactory for some time, if she had to guess. Of course, further examination would be required to determine that, and further examination wasn't currently possible given the state of both the pet and the distress her owner was in. Luckily for this girl, Professor Blumenthal was well-versed in the sickness of some of the wizarding world's most interesting creatures. A sick pet owl would be no trouble.january 8, 2023.
"This is a simple pet tonic. You'll have learned about this and everything that goes into it in your third year." It was only natural for the girl to feel stressed out about what the professor was going to give to the little creature, especially in such a state of stress. "Your healing charms might not be working because the damage is not a physical damage. Pet tonic will get to the bottom of the illness quicker and easier since she'll be ingesting it."
Sabine held the bottle pinched between her thumb and forefinger, glancing from the glass phial to Aurelia and back. "May I give it to her?" She knew that the comfort and trust of the girl in front of her was crucial to the care of this creature. She'd do anything to secure it.@Aurelia Notresvace.

In less than a semester, Marius would be able to finally take Care of Magical Creatures, a class of his dreams. CoMC was an elective, and only third years and above may take electives. There were a lot of things the boy had been waiting for since his first semester at Hogwarts, and now that Marius thought about it, waiting only seemed long when one counted the days. He did not, or at least not often, and here he was today, a mere six-and-a-half-month away from being a third year.
However, even as a second year, there was no rule preventing him from visiting the CoMC teacher. This time the position was held by Professor Sabine Blumenthal, an adult Marius had never spoken to before. If he were to judge a book by its cover, he would make a guess that she was a strict teacher not to be crossed with. It did not damp his determination, though, because he had nothing to hide. His visit would be purely in good spirit, so surely there was nothing to be scared of.
It was Friday and all the classes had finished, so the Hufflepuff was not in a hurry. This, he decided, would be a great time to speak with Professor Blumenthal. He turned, crossed the way to her office, and knocked. If she was to answer "come in", he would step inside and close the door behind him.

It was always a good day, at least in Sabine's mind, when she got a visit from a student who couldn't yet take her class. If she had it her way, all students would take it and be completely entranced in the world of magical creatures at all times, but those poor first and second years were cursed to wait until they could experience the magic of Chizpurfles and Porlocks.february 10, 2023.
Sabine sat where she always did--hunched over homework and squinting down at the slightly smudged ink on crumpled parchment. On the tip of her nose were her trademark red reading glasses, hanging on her neck by a beaded chain. The knock startled her from the problem she had been examining, and she looked up and adjusted her glasses.
"Come in," she greeted, waving her hand at the door. The boy who entered was one that Sabine hadn't seen in her class before. Perhaps she'd caught sight of him during a feast or two, but she really did see so many students at those things. "Good evening. Is there something I can help you with?"
Quite formal, but then, she normally was. Marius Brown's assumption about her disposition and subsequently strict manner wasn't far from the truth, though he may come to find out that she was a bit stranger than she seemed.@Marius Brown.

Upon hearing the professor's greeting, Marius opened the door. Casting a quick glance about the room, the Hufflepuff stepped in, slowly closing the door behind him. "Good day, Professor Blumenthal," he spoke. "I hope it would be all right with you if I cannot stay for long?"
The second year would sit should the Care of Magical Creatures teacher invited him to; however, if she did not, he would ask whether she minded if he sat down.
Following this, after feeling comfortable enough, Marius began informing her the reason behind his visit. "Well, Professor, long story short, I really like animals. I've always wanted to have a pet to keep me company here at school. But the thing is, I know my parents can't afford it. I may be able to save to buy one, but I'm sure the food and other expenses will cost even more; and they're constant! To be honest, I come to you today hoping to get some suggestions about which pet may be suitable for this condition."
Furthermore, to narrow down the potential suggestions, he added, "My current choice is between a cat, any species of them, or a pygmy puff. An owl is a third potential, though I don't recline to it as much as to the other two. But I'm not really interested in having a frog, a spider, a rat, or other common pets of Hogwarts students."

Marius Brown had certainly come to the right place. After all, Sabine was the resident animal expert, if she did say so herself (and she did), and knew just about everything there was to know about animals. The magical variety, at least. She had, of course, familiarized herself with the common pets of Hogwarts students, so where she couldn't say she was an expert on kangaroos, she was quite confident in her ability to handle cats and rats and owls and toads.february 10, 2023.
Leaning back in her seat, Sabine made a soft sigh of acknowledgement as she considered. She'd be remiss if she didn't recommend a cat, but there were all sorts of angles to think about when it came to choosing a pet.
"Well, for what you're looking for, I do actually think a spider would fit your conditions quite well. They are quite frightening little things at times, but can make just wonderful companions--I had a friend in school who just adored hers. Still, a cat can be worked with, though they require quite a bit of upkeep and maintenance and cannot be truly solitary," Sabine tapped her quill, a long purple feather almost as luxurious as she, against her desk. "Between a cat and a pygmy puff, I'd go with the pygmy puff. Smaller, don't require as much food. Might be easier to take place to place, and they do make quite loyal companions."
Seemingly pleased with the answer he had received, Marius Brown would thank the professor and stand to exit the office.Permission has been given upon request from the user in question to remove Marius Brown from the thread impending his future deactivation.@Marius Brown.
