Maggie Young was born Anna Margaret Hadley on 9 January 2011, the seventh child and fourth daughter of the pureblood wizard Hayward Hadley and the pureblood witch Maria Foster. Hayward was the son of a well-known, comfortably middle-class wizarding family, and in marrying Maria greatly improved her situation, though estranged Hayward from his disapproving family. Hayward and Maria lived in the town of Chapel-en-le-Frith in Derbyshire, England, with their six other children: Laura, Emily, George, Danny, Grace, and Bobby. Hayward struggled to support his family as an accountant and tired of Maria, whose love of children blinded her to their financial struggles.
When Maggie (or Anna, was she was then known) was five years old, Hayward found he was not her father. It was instead the half-blood wizard Jack Young, a childhood friend of both Hayward and Maria, a content bachelor and troublemaker, whose short, sporadic affair with Maria cost her a marriage. Hayward left and took Maggie's siblings with him. Maria could not possibly win custody, jobless as she was, and instead found herself with little Maggie. Hayward took some pity on the both and offered some child support should Maria change her daughter’s name to Anna Young.
Maria met Euan Doherty less than a year later. Though not of the same wealth as Hayward, Euan held more standing than Jack. Maggie became an ugly reminder of Maria’s first marriage and was passed on to Maria's parents: George and Maria Foster. Euan and Laura would have three children: Paddy, Erin, and Lachie.
