Duvessa strolled into the shop. Her pockets jingled with money, or, indeed, that was to say a couple galleons. She had examined the shop from afar, never have generally thought of stepping in there. Now she had a reason. She wanted a pet.

But with 7 Galleons, 5 Sickles and 23 Knuts - what pet could you buy for that money? Heavens, she heard her friend had bought a Pygmy Puff (and that was a rocking 21 Galleons). So what on earth was Duvessa Nyx Ember even thinking of doing here? The answer was pretty obvious. She had only one pet in mind, ever since she had started reading and entered Hogwarts. A Rat.

This was meant to be one of her most happiest days. Head to toe in a sweeping black cloak, she walked straight to the desk where a kindly, old shopkeeper greeted her.
"May I help you, dear?" The lady asked, a badge on her fluffy cardigan telling Duvessa who she was. Anita Witticker, Magical Menagerie Shop Keeper - it had said. She had a smiley face and tame white hair that was done in a casual, well brushed braid. She was very short for an adult, and Duvessa thought that the tallest girl in her year would easily be 4 foot higher! Duvessa's face went dreamy as she imagined it but she snapped back into her senses.
"Er - can I please have a rat for a pet?" Duvessa asked, trying to be as polite as possible. Mrs Witticker smiled once more and shuffled to a corner where rats scampered in cages.
"You'll find this lot enthusiastic." She nodded towards a group of rats bouncing on each other and gamely trying to fight each other. Two were slightly dirty but cute all the same, and were a brownish color. The third wore a coat of the finest grey fur and was the one that was trying to leap over the others.

But Duvessa had not expected there to be different breeds! Why, she had merely thought that there would be the same rats running around and she would pick the first one. She surveyed the rats, wondering which to choose. The Brownish ones were certainly the liveliest but the grey one was the most bounciest...more her on any way.
"I would like the Grey one please." She said finally and Anita nodded, pleased with the choice.
"That would be four galleons, and 2 Sickles. Ah - just right. Thank you, Miss." Anita smiled and handed her the rat in a tiny cage just right for her.

Duvessa thanked Miss Witticker and murmered to the rat.
"Well, aren't you lively?" As if hearing her, the rat began bouncing madly and looked with laughing eyes, "What shall I call you? Toothy? Nope, too creepy. Furry? Bouncy? Bouncy..." She paused, "Bouncy - come here." The rat trotted about the cage, not taking any notice.
"Well, it sounds right. And we will need a bit of training, I see." She sighed then said quietly, "Let's go..home."
