Skipping Stones
Reid nodded as she spoke, respectfully lending her an ear that listens quite closely. He had flinched at first at his arm being touched, he didn't expect such a nice gesture of comfort, it relaxed and gave him some ease of mind. Yet despite this, the young man often found his gaze wandering towards the lake whilst they talked. There was a stillness that he actually loved about this place, one that he couldn't get in Derby. He eyes would flicker back towards Christy at the mention of 'seven years' once more, smiling ever so lightly.
He felt her pain with the lack of control in her magic, yet he's learned to live with his struggle in the short time. He knew he had his shortcomings, yet he's thankfully met people who've been more than a big help. "I'm sure you'll be all right, everyone has their own pace anyway. I found a friend in Ravenclaw, she's going to help me with my studies later. Maybe you can look for someone who can help with it?" he suggested. He gently tapped two rocks in his hands as he spoke to her, it wasn't a habit - more of a tendency.
His thumb came to brush some dirt off of its surface, curling his fingers around it - then flinging it across the way. Reid swallowed the lump in his throat, he missed the voices he was used to waking up to in the morning. He missed the smell of breakfast in the morning and the cars that zoomed by his window. He missed the sound of home, the smell of it, the sight of it.
Yet it seemed that fate was forcing him to chip his pride and adjust, like his father had said. The Hufflepuff let out a soft sigh, tossing the other rock onto the floor. "Hopefully it'll be easier for the two of us once this year ends."

"Trouble usually finds me."

Skipping Stones
Christy retracted her hand as she felt him flinch at her touch. She could tell he was still kind of lost in thought while they were talking as his gaze wandered a bit. It's alright, she thought to herself, he's probably got a lot on his mind, as did she, from being in such a new and intimidating place. She smiled at him as he reassured her about her magick, "Thank you... I'm sure I'll get the hang of it, it's just frustrating you know?"
She looked down at the ground and found a rock that looked like a good skipping rock, so she knelt down to grab it, as she was hopeful that she would learn at least this skill. "Maybe I'll have better luck at this, though," she said as she smiled at him, getting her hand in the position she remembered him doing. She took a couple light practice swings, like someone golfing, getting ready to drive his ball across the grass. Then, when she felt she was ready, she swung her arm back and let the rock go. She watched as it skipped once and then sunk down into the lake. "Hey, I did it! It wasn't very good, but I did it," she smiled broadly and looked at the Hufflepuff boy, "thanks for teaching me." She felt accomplished that she had learned how to skip rocks, and she would very well come down to the lake every night to practice if it was going to be the one thing she got good at while being at Hogwarts. "I'm sure we'll be fine. As long as we all stick together and help each other, what could go wrong, right?"
