Little Birdie
Setting: On Hogwarts grounds, near the stables and forest edge.
Time: 10 a.m.
Howard lay upon the frosty ground, his crimson eyes scanning the tree line of the forest as he searched for his latest target. Over the last couple of years the young dhampir had begun cultivating a real passion for animal life, especially magical creatures, but the mundane as well. Though he would have loved to spend the day with the various critters in Professor Takagi's stables, a bit of animal spotting on his own would have to suffice. Oh, what he wouldn't give for unrestricted access to the Care of Magical Creatures building! However he had begun to journal his discoveries and he was excited to continue to fill it.
Howard pulled the leather-bound book from his bag and thumbed through the pages. The weekend before he had been lucky enough to spot a Scottish Hare nibbling on the few bits of grass sticking out of the snow. Rarely did they stand still long enough for him to take a good look, but this time he had gotten lucky. He wasn't the most artistic of wizards, but he was happy with the work nonetheless. A chance to study the creature through his omnioculars had been the real treat. Playing back the action over and over gave him a real sense of how the hare moved and functioned. Not the most exciting thing the world had to offer, but it was still fun. Below the image Howard had listed what he knew of the animal. It's color, estimated weight and sex, things like that.
Page after page were filled with similar entries. Most of them ground animals, but he had couple birds in there as well. Speaking of which, this is what brought him back out this day. Last week he had thought he caught a glimpse of it. A little raptor by the name of kestrel. The small falcon had zipped past Howard's view last time, but he hadn't been quick enough to capture it with his magical binoculars. Hopefully today would bring some success and that brings us back to the dhampir lying on the ground.
Howard had cashed in a favor and one of his friends had charmed his winter cloak. What was once black as night now matched the white of the snow around him. He draped it over himself as a bit of camouflage. The only other odd bit of color besides the gold of his omnioculars was the small purple fluff that skittered around him. "Stay close little buddy." He warned his pet pygmy puff, Gary, as his little nose sniffed around the scene. From what Howard had read, the kestrel could often be found perched in trees, ready to strike its prey from above and little Gary might be a tempting snack.
So, there Howard lay, playing the long game as he searched for his little birdie.

Ah, winter. That season had come again, the season of joy and nostalgia. For sure Marius Jinhao Brown enjoyed spring and autumn too, and he liked summer because it meant a long break and no school for months, but probably in some ways winter may be his favourite. He could not wait for Christmas, it was always his favourite time of the year, and one of his earliest memories took place in winter.
In the memory, he was three or four, and Mum was staying overnight in another town because of work. That evening, Dad was "inspecting" the farm, making sure that everyone was tucked warm enough, and little Marius trailed along, wanted to help. Brown eyes glued to Dad's lantern, loving it because it looked so classy and elegant.
There was another winter memory where he and Alberto were playing with Mum, but she was managed to scare them so in her role as the bad guy and the boys screamed so loudly that they woke Baby Max up and Dad chided them for it. Mum was Mum again for an instant, and with her merry piano she made everyone forgot that two minutes ago she was "the monster".
Twelve-year-old Marius smiled at these thoughts. The only problem was, he was buried so deep in his memories that he neglected to watch where he was going. He bumped into something white, and automatically apologised, "Oh, sorry!"
For a moment, he had the thought that it could be just snow or something, but turned out it was not - it was another student...

Howard continued his search of the tree line as the minutes passed him by. Most might find the activity a bit boring as he laid there doing not much of anything, but the thrill of the search was what he enjoyed most about it. Even little Gary seemed bored as the Pygmy puff had returned to Howard’s robe pocket for a crumb to eat and a nap, yet the Dhampir stayed vigilant. For the briefest moment he would think his patience had paid off as a blur of brown flashed across his field of vision. Howard quickly adjusted the lenses on his Omnioculars, but to his disappointment it was only a squirrel. They filled page 2 of his journal as they proved to be an easy mark. Funny little creatures, but not the most exciting.
It would be just then that the winds would shift and a new scent would cross Howard’s sensitive nose. One vaguely familiar, but nothing he could quite pinpoint. The crunch of shoes trudging through the snow caught his ears as someone else approached. He would let them pass if they did not bother him. His watching had been a solo experience and a way to spend some alone time in a life full of other people. Little did he know that he was about to have company whether he liked it or not.
The footsteps would come closer and closer. Howard shifted slightly and turned his head to see a younger student coming directly for him. Who was that? He soon realized that it was Marius Brown, the second year lad that had just recently joined the Quidditch team. “Oi. What’s up?” Howard called out the younger lad, but another realization soon dawned on him. Marius was definitely lost in thought as he was just about to step on Howard!
“Yo!” The Dhampir called out again, this time louder as Brown’s boot caught the fabric of his winter cloak. Marius was not the only a bit lost today as Howard had forgotten that his cloak had been charmed to match the white of the snow. Not really the other boys fault completely now was it? Howard laughed it off. “Marius, whatcha doing mate? Trying to crush your captain?” Howard joked with his new teammate as he lifted from a prone position to kneeling. Doing so would reveal the journal and watching equipment that he had been using. “Enjoying your weekend?”

Marius' face flushed and its owner felt both awkward and embarrassed the moment he realised who the other person was; if only there had been a hole, he probably would have considered to really jump into it just to shift his focus from the fact that he had toppled over a respected prefect (and Quidditch captain) to how on Earth he would be able to climb up the dark, cold hole.
However, Howard merely laughed it off, and to be honest, this was not a reaction Marius had been expecting. He had assumed that the elder Hufflepuff would either be just as awkward as the second year was or infuriated (because how dare this newbie laid his shoe on his honourable captain). But really, it was very lucky that he chose to laugh; not only because this meant to trouble would take place, but also due to the fact that his laughter now infected the twelve-year-old as well.
"I'm sorry, Howard," he finally said, but still with a sheepish smile on his rather tanned mug. "Never even dreamt of crushing my captain, but yes, I'm enjoying my weekend. Can't say I don't love snow! But what about you? Do you like winter as well?"

What could have been a really awkward or tense moment was quickly laughed away as the two team mates chuckled to themselves. Perhaps at one point in his life, Howard may have snapped at the younger student for his trespass, but these days the Dhampir was filled with a balanced energy. One that took quite a long time to achieve. Better late than never they say. "Don't worry about it." He finalized that there was no ill will between them before Marius brought up the weather.
Many among the Hogwarts residents often complained about the winter. The days were short, cold and often snow filled, yet Howard reveled in it as the cloud filled skies were a reprieve from the summers sun. His pale, almost dead looking skin was one of the few trademarks that came with his race, but it was also very sensitive to sunlight. Just a few minutes of direct exposure was enough to start a burn. Winters cold also offered a more comfortable atmosphere for a young man like him. "I do enjoy the winter. I don't handle the heat very well." Howard answered the younger Puff's inquiry. "Plus it makes for some great animal watching."
Truth be told, wildlife was actually more scarce during these months as some would hibernate and the others would usually hide away from the harsh winter weather. That just made spotting one of the many creatures all the more fun though. Perhaps Howard was just a little different, but he enjoyed the thrill of the chase. "Do any watching yourself, Marius?" He asked before gesturing towards his journal. "Started this up earlier in the year. Hope to have it filled by the end, but we will see." It was a tall task, but maybe he could get it done.

Marius' interest rose upon hearing that Howard was watching animals. The Hufflepuff Quidditch captain also asked if the second-string seeker shared said interest. "Is it similar to bird watching?" Marius asked. "I like animals, but somehow it never occurred to my mind to watch them this way. I mean, I visit the CoMC area now and then, but just that. At home too, I just look at the cows and the horses without really studying them, or even considering it a hobby."
His soft brown eyes darted to the journal Howard was gesturing to. "Do you draw them in your journal? And label some parts in the picture?" he asked, genuinely curious. "How do you think a bad illustrator who's interested in animal watching handle their weakness?"
The second year did not realise it, but he had definitely chatted for much longer than what the social conduct code recommended. It did not occur in his mind that the elder Hufflepuff may feel uncomfortable with all the words that came out of his mouth, or that it might be so selfish of him to talk and talk without waiting for the other party's feedback or reaction. As usual, Marius meant well, but was not the best in expressing it!
